Economic and carbon emission analysis of two typical denitrification systems for sintering process in the iron and steel industry

The transition of the Chinese iron and steel industry to ultralow emissions has accelerated the development of denitrification technologies.Considering the existing dual carbon targets,carbon emissions must be considered as a critical indicator when comparing denitrification systems.Consequently,this study provided a comprehensive cost-benefit model for denitrification in the steel industry,encompassing additional carbon emissions resulting from the implementation of denitrification systems.Activated-carbon adsorption and selective catalytic reduction(SCR)systems are two efficient techniques for controlling NOx emissions during sintering.Based on thismodel,a cost-benefit analysis of these two typical systems was conducted,and the results indicated that the unit flue-gas abatement costs of SCR and activated-carbon adsorption systems were 0.00275 and 0.0126 CNY/m^(3),and the unit flue-gas abatement benefits were 0.0072 and 0.0179 CNY/m^(3),respectively.Additionally,the effect of operational characteristics on operating costs,including duration and material prices,was analyzed.When treating the flue gas,the two systems released 0.0020 and 0.0060 kg/m^(3) of carbon dioxide,respectively.The primary sources of carbon emissions from the SCR and activated-carbon adsorption systems are the production of reducing agents and system operations,respectively.Furthermore,considering the features of the activated carbon adsorption system for simultaneous desulfurization,a SCR-wet flue gas desulfurization(WFGD)technology route was developed for comparison with the activated carbon adsorption system. 展开更多

The various and competing conflicts between different users and different sectors in the use of marine resources will cause the disorderly development of marine resources, and even destroy the marine ecosystem. Marine functional zoning is an effective tool to solve the conflicts. However, there are some shortcomings in the current understanding on marine functional zoning and its practice. In this paper, a case study on the resource-oriented marine functional zoning of Xiangshan Port is introduced. By the principles of resource-oriented and public participation, Xiangshan Port is divided into seven zones, and the main function of the whole port and seven zones are determined by the environmental economics analysis. A case study of Xiamen is also introduced for how to integrate marine functional zoning into a coastal city conceptual planning. Under the conservation principle, resources-oriented principle and so on, the advantages and disadvantages of natural ecosystem, social ecosystem and economic ecosystem are holistically analyzed, the urban orientation of Xiamen is determined as a regional international tourism city, and the whole city is divided into five function zones according to its leading industry -tourism. Resource-oriented marine functional zoning has a long-term guidance for sustainable use of marine resources and development strategy of a coastal city. And environmental economics analysis is an effective tool for resource-orientation. 展开更多

Electrocatalysis for nitrate(NO_(3^(–)))removal from wastewater faces the challenge of merging efficient reduction and high selectivity to nitrogen(N2)with economic viability in a durable catalyst.In this study,bimetallic PdCu/TiO_(x)composite catalysts were synthesized with varying Pd and Cu ratios through electrochemical deposition on defective TiOxnanotube arrays.Denitrification experiments demonstrated that the Pd_(1)Cu_(1)/TiO_(x)catalyst exhibited the highest(NO_(3^(–)))removal rate(81.2%)and N_(2)selectivity(67.2%)among all tested catalysts.Leveraging the exceptional light-responsive property of TiO_(x),the introduction of light energy as an assisting factor in electrocatalysis further augmented the(NO_(3^(–)))treatment rate,resulting in a higher(NO_(3^(–)))removal rate of 95.1%and N_(2)selectivity of approximately 90%.Compared to individual electrocatalysis and photocatalysis systems,the overpotential for the catalytic interface active*H formation in the photo-assisted electrocatalysis system was remarkably reduced,thus accelerating electron migration and promoting(NO_(3^(–)))reduction kinetics.Economic analysis revealed an energy consumption of 2.74 k Wh/mol and a corresponding energy consumption per order(EEO)of 0.79 k Wh/m^(3)for the Pd_(1)Cu_(1)/TiOxcatalyst to reduce 25.2 mg/L of(NO_(3^(–)))-N in water to N_(2),showcasing remarkable competitiveness and economic advantages over other water treatment technologies.This study developed the PdCu/TiOxelectrocatalysts with high(NO_(3^(–)))removal rates and N_(2)selectivity,particularly when combined with light energy,the efficiency and selectivity were significantly enhanced,offering a competitive and economically viable solution for wastewater treatment. 展开更多

Forest planning involves estimating the biomass of species present in the area.Two fundamental parameters are diameter and height through which it is possible to indirectly estimate of biomass present.Digitalisation of forestry operations,such as forest planning,is crucial and should be affordable and easy-to-use digital applications and open-source devices.A digital progressive web application(PWA)was designed to record measurements.The app was connected via bluetoot to an open-source IoT digital forestry caliper prototyped by modifying a commercial tree caliper.An economic analysis was carried out considering all costs necessary for the development and operation of the app on smartphones and the preparation of electronic means for creation of the digital caliper.A comparison was made between costs of detecting tree diameters through application of the technology developed compared to costs calculated by applying the use of a dendrometric caliper(three technological levels were considered:L1,L2 and L3).The PWA allowed for easy data entry and viewing,maps and tree densities.The open-source digital caliper showed accuracy and precision comparable with similar commercial devices(1.5%±0.9%and 0.0%±0.9%,respectively).Total time per operator was lower using the digital caliper.From an economic perspective,application of the digital technology was more sustainable than the traditional system.Use of the digital caliper in combination with the web application optimizes detection time of a single tree,and therefore decreases overall cost. 展开更多

Ensemble learning-driven multi-objective optimization of the co-pyrolysis process of biomass and coal for high economic and environmental performance

The biomass and coal co-pyrolysis (BCP) technology combines the advantages of both resources, achieving efficient resource complementarity, reducing reliance on coal, and minimizing pollutant emissions. However, this process still encounters numerous challenges in attaining optimal economic and environmental performance. Therefore, an ensemble learning (EL) framework is proposed for the BCP process in this study to optimize the synergistic benefits while minimizing negative environmental impacts. Six different ensemble learning models are developed to investigate the impact of input features, such as biomass characteristics, coal characteristics, and pyrolysis conditions on the product profit and CO_(2) emissions of the BCP processes. The Optuna method is further employed to automatically optimize the hyperparameters of BCP process models for enhancing their predictive accuracy and robustness. The results indicate that the categorical boosting (CAB) model of the BCP process has demonstrated exceptional performance in accurately predicting its product profit and CO_(2) emission (R2>0.92) after undergoing five-fold cross-validation. To enhance the interpretability of this preferred model, the Shapley additive explanations and partial dependence plot analyses are conducted to evaluate the impact and importance of biomass characteristics, coal characteristics, and pyrolysis conditions on the product profitability and CO_(2) emissions of the BCP processes. Finally, the preferred model coupled with a reference vector guided evolutionary algorithm is carried to identify the optimal conditions for maximizing the product profit of BCP process products while minimizing CO_(2) emissions. It indicates the optimal BCP process can achieve high product profits (5290.85 CNY·t−1) and low CO_(2) emissions (7.45 kg·t^(−1)). 展开更多

With extensive attention being paid to the potential environmental hazards of discarded face masks,catalytic pyrolysis technologies have been proposed to realize the valorization of wastes.However,recent catalyst selection and system design have focused solely on conversion efficiency,ignoring economic cost and potential life-cycle environmental damage.Here,we propose an economic-environmental hybrid pre-assessment method to help identify catalysts and reactors with less environmental impact and high economic returns among various routes to convert discarded face masks into carbon nanotubes(CNTs)and hydrogen.In catalyst selection,it was found that a widely known Fe-Ni catalyst exhibits higher catalytic activity than a cheaper Fe catalyst,potentially increasing the economic viability of the catalytic pyrolysis system by 38%-55%.The use of this catalyst also results in a carbon reduction of 4.12-10.20kilogram CO_(2) equivalent for 1 kilogram of discarded face masks,compared with the cheaper Fe catalyst.When the price of CNTs exceeds 1.49×10^(4) USD·t^(-1),microwave-assisted pyrolysis is the optimal choice due to its superior environmental performance(in terms of its life-cycle greenhouse gas reduction potential,eutrophication potential,and human toxicity)and economic benefits.In contrast,conventional heating pyrolysis may be a more economical option due to its good stability over 43 reaction regeneration cycles,as compared with a microwave-assisted pyrolysis catalyst with a higher conversion efficiency.This study connects foundational science with ecological economics to guide emerging technologies in their research stage toward technical efficiency,economic benefits,and environmental sustainability. 展开更多

Assessing the Effects of Anaerobic Co-Digestion with FOG and Food Waste Residuals on Biogas Production

As global populations grow, the generation of various waste materials like fats, oils, and grease (FOG), fruit waste, and other perishable wastes increases concurrently. Disposal of these highly putrescible waste products in landfills consumes valuable landfill space. Anaerobic digestion can transform these waste materials into valuable components, including fertilizer and biogas, reducing the demand for landfill space. The current study is based on the hypothesis that incorporating high-strength organic waste into conventional wastewater sludge can enhance the production of onsite biogas at wastewater treatment plants, therefore contributing to the reduction of the plant’s energy demands from the grid. The batch anaerobic biodegradability test assays were performed for 63 days to observe the impact on the biomethane yield from adding high-strength organic waste to the wastewater sludge and to investigate the combined effects of co-digesting two different preselected high-strength organic waste streams. Additionally, physicochemical characterization was performed on different fruit waste juicing residuals to indicate which fruit wastes might increase anaerobic digestion efficiency. The highest methane yield of 243 mL/gVS and 280 mL/gVS, respectively, were obtained with two mixtures having 10% FOG as the sole substrate and 10% FOG along with 10% fruit waste. The study also assessed the siloxane concentrations present as trace contaminants in the biogas samples. An initial economic feasibility assessment of food waste co-digestion at two wastewater treatment plants in Florida was conducted using the Co-Digestion Economic Analysis Tool (CoEAT) model. Based on the laboratory results, the analysis indicated a net positive benefit of $39,472 for a medium-sized plant (10 - 30 MGD capacity) and $52,488 for a larger plant (>30 MGD capacity) after 15 years, while diverting 10 - 18 tons/day of food waste from landfills with an anticipated minimal increase in sludge volume production at food waste additions less than 10% of the digester feed as stated in the literature. 展开更多

Urbanization and environmental degradation have led to significant declines in water quality and aquatic ecosystem health,highlighting the urgent need for effective restoration efforts.This study applies an integrated analysis approach to estimate the economic value and benefits of improvements in water quality and aquatic ecosystem services resulting from the Ecological Stream Restoration Project.Using survey data analyzed through the choice experiment(CE)method,we assessed respondents’preferences for various ecosystem services,including water-friendly services,ecological functions,water-level control,and water-quality purification.Three empirical analysis models—the Conditional Logit Model(CLM),Nested Logit Model(NL),and Error Component Logit Model(ECL)—were applied,with the ECL model identified as the most suitable for this study.From the physical impact assessment,we derived compensating variations to estimate the annual economic benefits of the project.The estimated annual economic value of water quality improvement due to the Anyangcheon Ecological Stream Restoration Project ranged from approximately KRW 10.54 billion to KRW 21.44 billion,while the economic value of aquatic ecosystem improvement was estimated to range from KRW 6.05 billion to KRW 12.30 billion annually.This study provides analytic framework that can inform future ecological restoration projects and sustainable water management policies. 展开更多

As mining activities expand deeper,deep high-temperature formations seriously threaten the future safe exploitation,while deep geothermal energy has great potential for development.Combining the formation cooling and geothermal mining in mines to establish a thermos-hydraulic coupling numerical model for fractured formation.The study investigates the formation heat transfer behaviour,heat recovery performance and thermal economic benefits influenced during the life cycle.The results show that the accumulation of cold energy during the cold storage phase induces a decline in formation temperature.The heat recovery phase is determined by the extent of the initial cold domain,which contracts inward from the edge and decelerates the heat recovery rate gradually.With groundwater velocity increases,the thermal regulation efficiency gradually increases,the production temperature decreases,while the effective radius and thermal power increase first and then decrease.The injected volume and temperature significantly affect,with higher injection temperatures slowing thermal recovery,and the thermal regulation efficiency is more sensitive to changes in formation permeability and thermal conductivity.The heat extraction performance is positively correlated with all factors.The levelized cost of electricity is estimated at 0.1203$/(kW·h)during the cold storage.During the heat recovery,annual profit is primarily driven by cooling benefits. 展开更多

Electric desalting wastewater(EDW)is one of the petrochemical wastewater generated in the production process of petrochemical industry,due to the instability of its water quality,the traditional wastewater treatment technology is complex,high energy consumption,and will produce waste causing secondary pollution,posing challenges in terms of environmental protection,technology,and economy.This study utilized an on-site test to investigate the possibility of a new short-process physical method to replace traditional electro-chemical,oil-separation,and two-stage air floating physical chemistry processes,in response to optimizing the treatment effect,thus reducing the cost of treatment and carbon emissions.Following this test,this new short-flow physical method process could improve the efficiency of oil and suspend solid(SS)removal by 15.48%and 58.72%,and providing 78.37%and 75.55%the operating costs and carbon emissions savings,respectively.This system also reduced the production of waste solids,volatile organic compounds,and other three-waste compared with the traditional process.These benefits offer environmental and economic advantages,and this process serves as an efficient strategy to treat wastewater for electric desalination,and can be served as a completely new technological and process option for the treatment of EDW. 展开更多

Africa is embracing new opportunities featured with industrialization,urbanization and regionalization.Based on co-development of‘Electricity,Mining,Metallurgy,Industry and Trade’and grids interconnection proposed by Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization(GEIDCO),the high-quality hydropower resource of the Congo River can be exploited in large scale under the wide-range interconnected framework of African Energy Interconnection(AEI),forging a new engine for Africa economy.The transmission distance of the Congo River hydropower reaches 6,000 km at its farthest end in North Africa,which brings forth challenges to economics of proposed projects.Under this novel continental energy interconnection scheme in Africa,economics of those projects have not yet been in detail studied.This paper has implemented China’s mature engineering experiences and analytical tools of UHVDC project planning into the AEI structure,through exploring the economic behavior of ultra-long distance UHVDC projects in the scope of conductor selection in the Congo River hydropower transmission for the first time,and has provided concerned parties with a technical and analytical results of their economics comparison.This paper has chosen the D.R.Congo-Guinea±800 kV UHVDC project as a typical example.Its preliminary system planning is introduced and three types of conductor are selected for scheme comparison.Later in this paper,the transmission loss,total investment and equivalent annual cost of the project have been calculated and analyzed.In the final part,sensitivity analysis results of the annual cost to utilization hours,transmission loss,loss tariff and construction cost has been provided. 展开更多

Parabolic trough collectors (PTCs) are employed for a variety of applications including steam generation and hot water generation. This paper deals with the experimental results and an economic analysis of a new fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) based solar PTC with an embedded electronic controlled tracking system designed and developed for hot water generation in a restaurant in Madurai, India. The new collector performance has been tested according to ASHRAE Standard 93 (1986). The performance of a new PTC hot water generation system with a well mixed hot water storage tank is investigated by a series of extensive tests over ten months period. The average maximum storage tank water temperature observed was 74.91℃, when no energy is withdrawn from the tank to the load during the collection period. The total cost of the new economic FRP based solar PTC for hot water generation with an embedded electronic controlled tracking system is Rs. 25000 (US$ 573) only. In the present work, life cycle savings (LCS) method is employed for a detailed economic analysis of the PTC system. A computer program is used as a tool for the economic analysis. The present worth of life cycle solar savings is evaluated for the new solar PTC hot water generation system that replaces an existing electric water heating system in the restaurant and attains a value of Rs. 23171.66 after 15 years, which is a significant saving. The LCS method and the MATLAB computer simulation program presented in this paper can be used to estimate the LCS of other renewable energy systems. 展开更多

Reverse osmosis (RO) is proved to be the most reliable, cost effective, and energy efficient in producing fresh water compared to other desalination technologies. It is the fastest-growing desalination technology with a greater number of installations around the world. The economic and technical performance of a medium-capacity RO desalination plant (2,000 m^3/day) proposed to be installed in Umm Qasr city south of Basra, Iraq is analyzed using DEEP-3.2 software created by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This port city is located on the Gulf shore and does not have any fresh water resources. The analysis shows that the cost of fresh water produced by this plant is US$0.986/m^3 with a good quality of fresh water (279 ppm), which is a reasonable price for this remote area. The analysis also shows an increase in water production cost of about 12% at increased electricity price from 0.06 to 0.1 US$/kWh, 53% when the seawater salinity increased from 35,000 to 45,000 ppm, 2.5% when the seawater temperature decreased from 33 ℃ to 20 ℃, and 0.71% when the interest rate increased from 0% to 5%. Pumping fresh water from the Basra purification plant (located 175 km north of Umm Qasr) is 22.16 times the cost and 236.7% poorer quality than the fresh water produced by the RO plant. 展开更多

Chickpea contains high levels of protein,vitamins and minerals.Acceptable chickpea yield is the result of meeting nitrogen and phosphorus requirements.The effect of appropriately meeting such requirements reflects on growth and can easily be evaluated using growth analysis.This research determined:(a)The effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on phenology,net assimilation rate,number of green leaves,leaf area,leaf area index and leaf area duration;(b)Green chickpea yield and number of pods due to fertilization;and(c)The combination of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization that yields the most net revenue.Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization was evaluated;each at the doses of 0,75 and 150 kg ha–1(N0,N75,N150;P0,P75 and P150,respectively).The combination of the levels of both nutrients generated nine combinations of treatments which were distributed in the field in a randomized complete block design in an arrangement of divided plots with four repetitions.Timing of phenological phases were similar among treatments.Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization increased number of leaves,leaf area index,and leaf area duration that translated into increased green chickpea yield(GCY).Combinations N150-P75 and N150-P150 produced the highest GCY.The highest net revenue and revenue per peso invested was obtained with N150-P75. 展开更多
