Intercity Mobility and Coupled Landscapes of Multidimensional Regionalization in Western China

Intercity mobility lays the foundation for capital flow,information flow,and knowledge flow,etc.,and is important for promoting regional integration.Although many scholars have studied intercity mobility in extensive well-developed urban agglomerations,few studies have examined the characteristics of intercity mobility at the county level and its impact on regionalization in western China.This study takes the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration(GPUA)as a case to study the geographical law of intercity mobility and then explore its impact on regionalization.The results obtained show that intercity mobility network exhibits a hub and spoke patterns focusing on major municipal districts at the county level.We also found a corridor effect that counties with higher travel volumes are mostly located along the trunk high speed railway(HSR)lines.Unlike previous studies,the distribution of intercity mobility is more concentrated than that of population and exhibits a super-linear behavior rule.There are the differences in gravity law for overall trips,weekday trips,weekend trips,and holiday trips.With the decrease of travel duration,the effect of attraction of destination is weakening,but the influence of distance decay is increasing.Finally,the spatial organization is still administrative-centric and is dominated by intraprefecture and intra-provincial development.Moreover,the coupled degree between network-based regionalization and attribute-based regionalization shows a decreasing trend from administrative via cultural to physical factors.These findings enrich the research on the intercity mobility and the regionalization in inland developing urban agglomerations. 展开更多

Abrupt temperature volatility has detrimental effects on daily activities,macroeconomic growth,and human health.Predicting abrupt temperature volatility and thus diminishing its negative impacts can be achieved by exploring homogeneous regions of temperature volatility and analyzing the driving factors.To investigate the regionalization of temperature volatility in China's mainland,a network constructed by the cosine similarity of temperature volatility series from China's mainland was embedded in hyperbolic space.Subsequently,we partitioned the network on the hyperbolic map using the critical gap method and then found eight regions in all.Ultimately,a network of communities was constructed while the interaction among communities was quantified.This yields a perspective of temperature volatility regionalization that can accurately reflect factors including altitude,climate type,and the geographic location of mountains.Further analysis demonstrates that the regionalization in the hyperbolic map is distinct from provinces and has a realistic basis:communities in southwest China show strong correlations due to the temperature sensitivity to altitude,and communities in northern China show a convergence in the area of Dingxi,Gansu,mainly owing to the strong temperature sensitivity to climate types.As a consequence,node distributions and community divisions in the hyperbolic map can offer new insights into the regionalization of temperature volatility in China's mainland.The results demonstrate the potential of hyperbolic embedding of complex networks in forecasting future node associations in real-world data. 展开更多

Although air pollutant emissions have sharply reduced in recent years,the occurrence of PM_(2.5) pollution events remains an intractable environmental problem in Beijing,and regional transport is the key influence factor.However,it has been difficult to identify regional transport characteristics and the main contributors to pollution events in recent years.In this study,the relative contribution of regional transport was quantified(61.3%)in PM_(2.5) pollution events during 2018-2021 by the Community Multiscale Air Quality model embedded with the Integrated Source Apportionment Model(CMAQ-ISAM).The four regions with the largest fractional contributions to Beijing for all events were Shandong(7.7%),South Hebei(7.3%),Baoding(6.2%),and Langfang(5.8%).Pollution events were classified into the following types based on regional transport directions:local,southwest(SW),southeast(SE),south-mixed(SM),and others.Based on the transport distance,the SW,SE,and SM types can be subdivided into SW-short,SW-long,SE-short,SE-long,SM-short,SM-long distance from southwest,SM-long distance from southeast,and SM-long distance from southwest and southeast.SE-long was regarded as the most important type,with the highest relative frequency(20%).The transport directions were related to the southwest wind at 925 hPa and southeast wind at 1000 hPa in the south of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei(BTH)region,and the distance was mainly controlled by wind strength.The wind-field difference can be attributed to the low-pressure and high-pressure systems that control the BTH region.The results suggest that regional joint pollution control should be optimized based on the transport type. 展开更多

This study investigates the coordination between regional economic growth and ecological sustainability within the context of high-quality town economy development.To address the challenges of balancing economic expansion with environmental protection,a comprehensive evaluation index system is constructed,encompassing two key dimensions:regional economy and ecological environment.Using panel data from 2013 to 2022,the coupling coordination degree model is employed to quantify the interactions and synergy between these dimensions.Additionally,spatial econometric methods are applied to calculate both global and local Moran’s Index,revealing spatial clustering patterns,regional disparities,and heterogeneity.The relative development model further identifies critical factors influencing regional coordination,with a focus on the lagging development of basic infrastructure and public services.The findings demonstrate a positive temporal trend toward improved regional coordination and reduced development gaps,with a spatial pattern characterized by higher coupling degrees in eastern and central regions compared to western areas.Based on these results,this study proposes actionable strategies to enhance coordinated development,emphasizing ecological conservation,the establishment of green production and consumption systems,ecological restoration,and strengthened municipal collaboration.This revised abstract emphasizes the study’s purpose,methods,and key findings more clearly while maintaining a professional and concise tone.Finally,based on the above analysis results,the corresponding coordinated development suggestions of regional economy and ecological environment are given from the aspects of ecological environment protection measures,green production and consumption system construction,ecological environment restoration and municipal coordination. 展开更多

Timely and accurate forecasting of storm surges can effectively prevent typhoon storm surges from causing large economic losses and casualties in coastal areas.At present,numerical model forecasting consumes too many resources and takes too long to compute,while neural network forecasting lacks regional data to train regional forecasting models.In this study,we used the DUAL wind model to build typhoon wind fields,and constructed a typhoon database of 75 processes in the northern South China Sea using the coupled Advanced Circulation-Simulating Waves Nearshore(ADCIRC-SWAN)model.Then,a neural network with a Res-U-Net structure was trained using the typhoon database to forecast the typhoon processes in the validation dataset,and an excellent storm surge forecasting effect was achieved in the Pearl River Estuary region.The storm surge forecasting effect of stronger typhoons was improved by adding a branch structure and transfer learning. 展开更多

Thermospheric neutral winds(TNWs)refer to the neutral gases in the thermosphere circulating as tides,which play a crucial role in the dynamics of the thermosphere-ionosphere system(TIS).Global geospace neutral winds,particularly over the magnetic equator,have been a subject of study for several decades.However,despite the known importance of neutral winds,a comprehensive understanding and characterization of the winds is still lacking.Various ground-based and satellite missions have provided valuable information on the contribution of neutral winds to the global atmospheric dynamics.However,efforts in the global monitoring of neutral winds are still lacking,and the drivers behind the behavior of TNWs as well as their influence on the TIS remain incomplete.To address these knowledge gaps in the global circulation of TNWs,it is crucial to develop a deep understanding of the neutral wind characteristics over different regions.The low-latitude equatorial region in particular has been observed to exert complex influences on TNWs because of the unique effects of the Earth’s magnetic field at the dip equator.Studying neutral winds over this region will provide valuable insights into the unique dynamics and processes that occur in this region,thereby enhancing our understanding of their role in the overall dynamics of the TIS.Additionally,through empirical observations,an improved ability to accurately model and predict the behavior of this region can be achieved.This review article addresses challenges in understanding equatorial winds by reviewing historical measurements,current missions,and the interactions of ionospheric and thermospheric phenomena,emphasizing the need for comprehensive measurements to improve global atmospheric dynamics and weather forecasting. 展开更多

The heat content(HC)of water masses on the Ross Sea continental shelf plays an important role in regulating the circulations and the basal melting of the Ross Ice Shelf(RIS).Yet,the evolution of the HC on the Ross Sea continental shelf is still not clear due to the sparsity of observations.By employing a coupled regional ocean-sea ice-ice shelf model for the Ross Sea,this study analyzes the heat budget of water masses over the continental shelf and in the RIS cavity.According to the topographic features and the HC density,the continental shelf region is divided into 17 subdomains.The heat budget of the middle layer for every subdomain is analyzed.In addition,the heat budget for the RIS cavity is assessed for the first time.Owing to Modified Circumpolar Deep Water intrusion,water masses over the eastern shelf are warmer than over the western shelf,with the coldest water identified in the southwestern inner shelf.The horizontal heat flux mainly provides heat to the continental shelf,while the atmospheric forcing tends to warm up the ocean during the ice-melting period and cool down the ocean during the ice-freezing period.The vertical heat flux is generally upward and transports heat from the deep layer to the upper layer.In the RIS cavity,the seasonal cycle of the HC is dominated by the horizontal flux across the RIS front rather than the basal thermal forcing of the RIS. 展开更多

Projection of extreme climate change in the Asian arid region and the Tibetan Plateau in the early and middle 21st century based on NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 被引量:1

In the context of global warming,it is anticipated that both the intensity and the frequency of future global extreme high precipitation(EHP)and extreme high temperature(EHT)events will increase.To evaluate the future extreme climate changes in the Asian arid region and Tibetan Plateau,this study applied the NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections(NEX-GDDP-CMIP6)to assess the changes in EHP(Rx5d and R95pTOT)and EHT(TX90p and TXx)under different emission scenarios in the 21st century.Findings suggest that both the frequency and the intensity of the extreme indices will increase,exhibiting accelerated growth under higher emission scenarios,particularly under the SSP5-8.5 emission scenario.It is suggested that the growth of EHT and EHP in the early subperiod of the 21st century(2026-2045)will be relatively moderate,with small differences between different emission scenarios.However,by the middle subperiod of the 21st century(2041-2060),the differences between different emission scenarios will become larger than the 2035s and the growth will become more intense.In western central Asia,TX90p,TXx,Rx5d,and R95pTOT increase by 9.7%-14.2%(13.3%-24.7%),1.3℃-1.7℃(1.6℃-2.7℃),6.5%-8.9%(8.2%-8.8%),and 18.1%-27.0%(25.6%-30.0%)by the early(middle)subperiod;in eastern central Asia,TX90p,TXx,Rx5d,and R95pTOT increase 8.1%-12.0%(11.3%-21.1%),1.4℃-1.8℃(1.9℃-2.9℃),7.4%-9.7%(10.4%-13.8%),and 20.2%-29.3%(32.0%-40.8%)by the early(middle)subperiod;and over the Tibetan Plateau,TX90p,TXx,Rx5d,and R95pTOT increase 12.5%-17.4%(17.0%-31.0%),1.2℃-1.5℃(1.6℃-2.5℃),7.2%-10.0%(9.9%-15.0%),and 26.6%-33.1%(36.1%-55.3%)by the early(middle)subperiod. 展开更多

Climate change and anthropogenic activities have driven significant terrestrial water storage changes(TWSC)in the Three Rivers Source Region(TRSR),exerting profound impacts on freshwater availability across China and broader Asia.However,long-term TWSC characterization remains challenging due to limited observational data in this alpine region.Here,we integrate GRACE observations(2002-2020),ERA5-Land reanalysis,and GLDAS data to reconstruct TWSC using two methods:(1)the water balance method(PER)and(2)the component summation method(SS),applied to three input datasets(ERA5-Land,GLDAS,and their average,GLER).Comparative analysis reveals that the SS method applied to GL-ER yields the highest consistency with GRACE-derived TWSC.Using this optimal approach,we extend the analysis to 1951~2020,uncovering spatiotemporal TWSC patterns.Although annual TWSC trends appear negligible due to strong seasonality,we introduce the intra-year TWSC fluctuation(TWSCF)index to quantify cumulative variability.A significant(p<0.05)transition occurred in 1980,with TWSCF shifting from a declining trend(-0.39 mm/yr)to an increasing trend(0.56 mm/yr),primarily driven by soil moisture changes.However,Hurst exponent analysis suggests this upward trend may not persist.Drought and vegetation assessments indicate concurrent wetting and greening in the TRSR.TWSC correlates strongly with meteorological drought,acting as a reliable drought indicator while its linkage with vegetation dynamics suggests a potential contribution to greening.Our findings provide a robust framework for understanding long-term TWSC evolution and its hydrological-ecological interactions under climate change. 展开更多

An alternative regularization approach for modeling the regional lithospheric magnetic field from satellite magnetic measurements by the spherical equivalent source method and its application in Africa 被引量:1

The equivalent source(ES)method in the spherical coordinate system has been widely applied to processing,reduction,field modeling,and geophysical and geological interpretation of satellite magnetic anomaly data.However,the inversion for the ES model suffers from nonuniqueness and instability,which remain unresolved.To mitigate these issues,we introduce both the minimum and flattest models into the model objective function as an alternative regularization approach in the spherical ES method.We first present the methods,then analyze the accuracy of forward calculation and test the proposed ES method in this study by using synthetic data.The experimental results from simulation data indicate that our proposed regularization effectively suppresses the Backus effect and mitigates inversion instability in the low-latitude region.Finally,we apply the proposed method to magnetic anomaly data from China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite-1(CSES-1)and Macao Science Satellite-1(MSS-1)magnetic measurements over Africa by constructing an ES model of the large-scale lithospheric magnetic field.Compared with existing global lithospheric magnetic field models,our ES model demonstrates good consistency at high altitudes and predicts more stable fields at low altitudes.Furthermore,we derive the reduction to the pole(RTP)magnetic anomaly fields and the apparent susceptibility contrast distribution based on the ES model.The latter correlates well with the regional tectonic framework in Africa and surroundings. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The burden of mental disorders(MD)in the Western Pacific Region(WPR)re-mains a critical public health concern,with substantial variations across demogra-phics and countries.AIM To analyze the burden of MD in the WPR from 1990 to 2021,along with associated risk factors,to reveal changing trends and emerging challenges.METHODS We used data from the Global Burden of Disease 2021,analyzing prevalence,incidence,and disability-adjusted life years(DALYs)of MD from 1990 to 2021.Statistical methods included age-standardisation and uncertainty analysis to address variations in population structure and data completeness.RESULTS Between 1990 and 2021,the prevalence of MD rose from 174.40 million cases[95%uncertainty interval(UI):160.17-189.84]to 234.90 million cases(95%UI:219.04-252.50),with corresponding DALYs increasing from 22.8 million(95%UI:17.22-28.79)to 32.07 million(95%UI:24.50-40.68).During this period,the burden of MD shifted towards older age groups.Depressive and anxiety disorders were predominant,with females showing higher DALYs for depressive and anxiety disorders,and males more affected by conduct disorders,attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder,and autism spectrum disorders.Australia,New Zealand,and Malaysia reported the highest burdens,whereas Vietnam,China,and Brunei Darussalam reported the lowest.Additionally,childhood sexual abuse and bullying,and intimate partner violence emerged as significant risk factors.CONCLUSION This study highlights the significant burden of MD in the WPR,with variations by age,gender,and nation.The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has exacerbated the situation,emphasizing the need for a coordinated response. 展开更多

Applicability of Different Indices for Delineating the Boundary of Arid Region:A Case Study in Northwestern China

Arid regions are vital components of Earth’s land surface.Clarifying the area/boundary of arid region is crucial for comprehending area changes and potential mechanisms.However,the accuracy and applicability of arid region boundary delineated by different indices remain unclear.In this study,the annual precipitation(AP),humidity index(H),and aridity index(K)were calculated for delineating arid region of China using 106 meteorological stations during 1990–2019.The results suggest that AP and H can accurately delineate arid region,because they are consistent with the distribution of typical soil and vegetation in arid region,whereas K is not.Moreover,AP is the best index for delineating arid region in regions with limited meteorological data,especially in studying long-term patterns and mechanisms of area changes.The accuracy of delineating arid region using H is enhanced in regions with abundant meteorological data.Over the past 30 years,influenced by the increase of atmospheric moisture influx and precipitation,the area in arid region of northwestern China decreased by 70×10^(3)–90×10^(3)km^(2),resulting in the present area of approximately 1.55×10^(6)km^(2).This study provides appropriate indices for delineating arid region,contributing to improving our knowledge of regional responses difference to climate change. 展开更多

On December 19,2015,construction equipment including cranes and excavators stood at attention at Thailand’s Chiang Rak Noi Station.Then Chinese State Councilor Wang Yong and Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prajin Juntong lit the ceremonial cable,officially launching the China-Thailand Railway project.The 845-kilometer high-speed line will be Thailand’s first.It will stretch from Bangkok to Nong Khai on the Thai-Lao border and,once completed,will connect with the operational China-Laos Railway,enabling direct travel from Bangkok to Kunming,capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province.Currently,most of Thailand’s rail infrastructure dates back more than a century.Most trains run at speeds below 50 km/h,using outdated carriages with safety risks.The China-Thailand Railway is expected to significantly improve this situation. 展开更多

The alpine ecosystem has great potential for carbon sequestration.Soil organic carbon(SOC)and total nitrogen(TN)are highly sensitive to climate change,and their dynamics are crucial to revealing the effect of climate change on the structure,function,and services of the ecosystem.However,the spatial distribution and controlling factors of SOC and TN across various soil layers and vegetation types within this unique ecosystem remain inadequately understood.In this study,256 soil samples in 89 sites were collected from the Three River Headwaters Region(TRHR)in China to investigate SOC and TN and to explore the primary factors affecting their distribution,including soil,vegetation,climate,and geography factors.The results show that SOC and TN contents in 0-20,20-40,40-60,and 60-80 cm soil layers are 24.40,18.03,14.04,12.40 g/kg and 2.46,1.90,1.51,1.17 g/kg,respectively;with higher concentrations observed in the southeastern region compared to the northwest of the TRHR.One-way analysis of variance reveals that SOC and TN levels are elevated in the alpine meadow and the alpine shrub relative to the alpine steppe in the 0-60 cm soil layers.The structural equation model explores that soil water content is the main controlling factor affecting the variation of SOC and TN.Moreover,the geography,climate,and vegetation factors notably indirectly affect SOC and TN through soil factors.Therefore,it can effectively improve soil water and nutrient conditions through vegetation restoration,soil improvement,and grazing management,and the change of SOC and TN can be fully understood by establishing monitoring networks to better protect soil carbon and nitrogen. 展开更多

The perfection of the cross-border regional innovation system of the Pearl River Delta(PRD)and Hong Kong region remarkably underpins the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA)towards an international technological innovation hub.This paper focuses on the relational characteristics of the usage of technological innovation functions and elements,including labor force,technology,and producer services from Hong Kong region by high-technology firms in the PRD,and probes into the influencing factors by integrating the objective perspective on the impact of firm-level socioeconomic attributes and subjective perspective on the open interpretations on the reasons by using or not using technological innovation functions and elements from Hong Kong region by various stakeholders in high-technology domains in the PRD.Key research findings are fourfold.First,Hong Kong's technological innovation functions primarily ride on its institutional advantages under the“One Country,Two Systems”framework to empower high-technology firms in the PRD by expanding their international market,international business operation,and financing,but cross-border investment and entrepreneurship has retrieved to a relatively marginalized position.The degree of supply-demand relations of producer services is the highest,followed by labor force and technology.Second,Hong Kong-invested,large-sized,and long-standing high-technology firms in the PRD are more inclined to use technological innovation elements from Hong Kong region,while domestic,small-and-medium-sized,and start-up high-technology firms in the PRD are in turn,gradually unhooked from the supply of technological innovation elements from Hong Kong region.Third,Hong Kong enjoys both advantages and disadvantages in supplying labor forces,technologies,and producer services to high-technology firms in the PRD,with advantages in competitiveness,international linkages and visions,and disadvantages in high cost,lack of more profound mutual understanding between Hong Kong and the PRD,and the imperfect cooperation mechanisms.Fourth,interactions among the transitioning role of Hong Kong region in the macro-level global and national economic development landscape,meso-level cross-border regional specificities under the“One Country,Two Systems”framework,and micro-level heterogeneous practices and capabilities of firms influence the usage of technological innovation functions and elements from Hong Kong region by high-technology firms in the PRD. 展开更多
