It is shown that the maximum absorption peaks of the ro-tamers have difference of nearly 30 nm both in vacuum and in solutions. The population of the rotamers changes a lot in different solvents. Based on the geometries optimized by Hartree-Fock method, the Maxwell-Boltzmann averaged absorption has been calculated and the maximum absorption peak is in good agreement with experiment. It indicates that the bond length alternation can have an important effect on the optical spectra.展开更多

Because of owning 4f electron characteristics and alternation valence, Ce treatment presented the highest enhancement in light absorption, energy transfer from LHC Ⅱ to PS Ⅱ, excitation energy distribution from PS Ⅰ to PS Ⅱ, and fluorescence quantum yield around 680 nm. Compared with Ce treatment, Nd treatment resulted in relatively lower enhancement in these physiological indices, as Nd did not have alternation valence. La treatment presented the lowest enhancement, as La did not have either 4f electron or alternation valence. The increase in activities of whole chain electron transport, PS ⅡDCPIP photoreduction, and oxygen evolution of chloroplasts was of the following order: Ce〉Nd 〉La〉 control. However, the photoreduction activities of spinach PS I almost did not change with La, Ce, or Nd treatments. The results suggested that 4f electron characteristics and alternation valence of rare earths had a close relationship with photosynthesis improvement.展开更多

Thes...Wettability alternation phenomena is considered one of the most important enhanced oil recovery (EOR) mechanisms in the chemical flooding process and induced by the adsorption of surfactant on the rock surface. These phenomena are studied by a mesoscopic method named as dissipative particle dynamics (DPD). Both the alteration phenomena of water-wet to oil-wet and that of oil-wet to water-wet are simulated based on reasonable definition of interaction parameters between beads. The wetting hysteresis phenomenon and the process of oil-drops detachment from rock surfaces with different wettability are simulated by adding long-range external forces on the fluid particles. The simulation results show that, the oil drop is liable to spread on the oil-wetting surface and move in the form of liquid film flow, whereas it is likely to move as a whole on the waterwetting surface. There are the same phenomena occuring in wettability-alternated cases. The results also show that DPD method provides a feasible approach to the problems of seepage flow with physicochemical phenomena and can be used to study the mechanism of EOR of chemical flooding.展开更多

On the other hand, plant mitochondria obeyed another different rule after their classification. Complete single DNA strand sequences obtained from chloroplasts, plant mitochondria, and animal mitochondria, were divided into the coding and non-coding regions. The non-coding region, which was the complementary coding region on the reverse strand, was incorporated as a coding region in the forward strand. When the nucleotide contents of the coding region or non-coding regions were plotted against the composition of the four nucleotides in the complete single DNA strand, it was determined that chloroplast and plant mitochondrial DNA obeyed Chargaff’s second parity rule in both the coding and non-coding regions. However, animal mitochondrial DNA deviated from this rule. In chloroplast and plant mitochondrial DNA, which obey Chargaff’s second parity rule, the lines of regression for G (purine) and C (pyrimidine) intersected with regression lines for A (purine) and T (pyrimidines), respectively, at around 0.250 in all cases. On the other hand, in animal mitochondrial DNA, which deviates from Chargaff’s second parity rule, only regression lines due to the content of homonucleotides or their analogs in the coding or non-coding region against those in the complete single DNA strand intersected at around 0.250 at the horizontal axis. Conversely, the intersection of the two lines of regression (G and A or C and T) against the contents of heteronucleotides or their analogs shifted from 0.25 in both coding and non-coding regions. Nucleotide alternations in chloroplasts and plant mitochondria are strictly regulated, not only by the proportion of homonucleotides and their analogs, but also by the heteronucleotides and their analogs. They are strictly regulated in animal mitochondria only by the content of homonucleotides and their analogs.展开更多

To better identify the characteristics of flood-drought alternations, we proposed a modified dry-wet abrupt alternation index (DWAAI) and applied the new method in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin (YRB-ML) to analyze the long-term spatio-temporal characteristics of dry-wet abrupt alterna- tion (DWAA) events based on the daily precipitation observations at 75 rainfall stations in summer from 1960 to 2015. We found that the DWAA events have been spreading in the study area with higher frequency and intensity since 1960. In particular, the DWAA events mainly occurred in May and June in the northwest of the YRB-ML, including Hanjiang River Basin, the middle reaches of the YRB, north of Dongting Lake and northwest of Poyang Lake. In addition, we also analyzed the impact of El Nifio Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on DWAA events in the YRB-ML. The results showed that around 41.04% of DWAA events occurred during the declining stages of La Nifia or within the subsequent 8 months after La Nina, which implies that La Nina events could be predictive signals of DWAA events. Besides, significant negative correlations have been found between the modified DWAAI values of all the rainfall stations and the sea surface temperature anomalies in the Nino3.4 region within the 6 months prior to the DWAA events, particularly for the Poyang Lake watershed and the middle reaches of the YRB. This study has significant implications on the flood and drought control and water resources management in the YRB-ML under the challenge of future climate change.展开更多

文摘The mechanical behavior of cohesive soil is sensitized to drying-wetting cycles under confinements. However, the hydromechanical coupling effect has not been considered in current constitutive models.A macro-micro analysis scheme is proposed in this paper to investigate the soil deformation behavior under the coupling of stress and drying-wetting cycles.A new device is developed based on CT(computerized tomography)workstation to apply certain normal and shear stresses on a soil specimen during drying-wetting cycles.A series of tests are conducted on a type of loess with various coupling of stress paths and drying-wetting cycles. At macroscopic level, stress sensor and laser sensor are used to acquire stress and strain, respectively. The shear and volumetric strain increase during the first few drying-wetting cycles and then become stable. The increase of the shear stress level or confining pressure would cause higher increase rate and the value of shear strain in the process of drying-wetting cycles. At microscopic level, the grayscale value(GSV)of CT scanning image is characterized as the proportion of soil particles to voids.A fabric state parameter is proposed to characterize soil microstructures under the influence of stress and drying-wetting cycle.Test results indicate that the macroand micro-responses show high consistence and relevance. The stress and drying-wetting cycles would both induce collapse of the soil microstructure, which dominants degradation of the soil mechanical properties. The evolution of the macro-mechanical property of soil exhibits a positive linear relationship with the micro-evolution of the fabric state parameter.

文摘Since the 21st century, the Huang–Huai–Hai River Basin(HHHRB)in China has experienced increased frequency and severity of drought–flood abrupt alternation(DFAA)events during early summer, characterized by droughts in June followed by floods in July. The 2024 event was the most severe since 1981.This study demonstrates that such compound extreme events are closely linked to anomalous subseasonal evolution of large-scale atmospheric circulation.During the drought phase, the East Asian subtropical westerly jet(EAJ)shifts southward, and the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)exhibits anomalous strengthening with its western ridge line displaced southward. The flood phase is characterized by acceleration of the EAJ,westward extension of the WPSH,and enhanced southwestern moisture transport from the western Pacific.Beyond these typical features, the 2024 early summer circulation exhibited unique characteristics:Anomalous northeastward intensification of the WPSH facilitated merged moisture influx from both the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific along the southeast pathway into the HHHRB in July, resulting in the highest net moisture inflow at the southern boundary of the HHHRB since 1981.The synergistic effects of multiple factors primarily explain the exceptionally intense DFAA event in 2024.

文摘Fissured clays exhibit unique geotechnical behaviors, with the stiffness characteristics evolving dynamically in response to environmental changes. To address this issue, reported here is a systematic assessment of how dryingewetting(DW)cycles affect the small-strain stiffness characteristics of fissured clay.Resonant column tests are taken to examine the nonlinear attenuation behavior of the small-strain shear modulus(SSSM)and damping ratio of fissured clay under various DW cycle and consolidation pressure(25e200 kPa)conditions.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and computed tomography(CT)are employed to reveal the microstructure of fissured clay. The HardineDrnevich(H-D)model is used to describe the decay law of its SSSM,and the small strain stiffness characteristics of fissured soil are analyzed in view of damage mechanics. The results show that the SSSM of the fissured clay decreases as the DWcycles increase, with the greatest attenuation at original soil state. The damping ratio exhibits an incremental trend with escalating strain and a higher number of DW cycles.Regarding damage,DW cycles can lead to the formation of microcracks in the sample, and the aggregates disperse into smaller aggregates, which then aggregates again, resulting in structural damage. The damage variables of the samples under various confining pressures and DW cycles are analyzed based on the principle of strain damage. Finally, the volume changes and the distribution of different pore sizes obtained through CT are analyzed to investigate the stiffness attenuation under DW cycles.Additionally, the study examines the propagation direction of secondary cracks induced by primary fissures, which will play an important role in reduction of the stiffness. Our investigations contribute to understanding of soil mechanics and practical applications in areas where fissured clay is prevalent.

文摘Numerous slope failures have been reported during periods of water level fluctuations.Understanding the influence of water on the creep behavior of joints is essential for evaluating the long-term stability of slopes. This study focuses on the effects of drying-wetting cycles and soaking conditions on the long-term behavior of sandstone joints.A total of 12 multi-stage shear creep tests are carried out on sandstone joints subjected to varying drying-wetting cycles under both soaking and un-soaking conditions.Based on the experimental results, the influences of drying-wetting cycles as well as soaking conditions on the microstructure, shear creep displacement, strength, and failure morphologies of sandstone joints are investigated comprehensively. Results indicate that increasing drying-wetting cycles not only yields larger shear creep displacements but also leads to a negative exponential decrease in the strength of sandstone joints.Besides, soaking conditions strongly influence the creep behavior of sandstone joints. The failure strength and long-term strength of sandstone joints for soaked samples decrease by 13.6%–29.0%and 19.4%–37.5%,respectively,as compared to unsoaked samples.Furthermore, four distinct stages in the shear creep process were identified according to the results obtained from multi-stage shear creep tests and computerized tomography scans, and three creep failure modes of sandstone joints are thus determined. Finally, the influence mechanism of drying-wetting cycles and soaking conditions on the creep failure modes of sandstone joints is revealed.Drying-wetting cycles and soaking conditions diminish the influence of asperities on the shear creep behavior of joints, thereby reducing the resistance of joints to long-term deformation.

文摘Invasive macroalgae are recognized as one of the greatest threats to local marine ecology and economy.Chaetomorpha valida is an invasive species in China, originally found in Dalian City,Liaoning Province, and has now invaded southward to seas such as Rongcheng City,Shandong Province. Its overgrowth has seriously damaged the local mariculture industry.Based on two strains of C.valida isolated in our previous study, this study explores the effects of temperature and irradiance on their growth and reproduction under laboratory conditions. The results show that the suitable temperature ranges are primarily 21−29℃.The optimal temperature is 25℃for gametophytic growth and sporophytic asexual reproduction, and 29℃for sporophytic growth and gametophytic sexual reproduction. And there is no significant effect of irradiance on their growth and reproduction.Meanwhile, the suitable temperature ranges and optimum irradiance for the growth and reproduction of both strains are largely similar, with only slight differences in the suitable ones for sporophytic asexual reproduction and gametophytic growth.Accordingly, the effect of temperature on the isomorphic generation alternation in C.valida was analyzed,as well as the dynamics of its generation alternation and invasive potential for its environmental adaptation in the northern and southern seas of China. This will help to understand its dynamic pattern spreading from the north to south in China, and also be an important reference for understanding the generation alternation characteristics, invasions and prevention of the outbreaks of other green tidal algae.

文摘The preparation and functionalization of polymeric capsules attract intense attention due to their application in various areas.Herein we presented an amphiphilic alternating copolymer(ACP)-based microcapsule which is both robust and readily-functionalized through interfacial click polymerization.A water-in-oil emulsion was constructed to act as the reaction medium, the hydrophilic 1,3-butadiene diepoxide(BDE)in water phase reacted with the oleophilic 1,4-dibutanedithiol(BDT)in oil phase at the water-oil interface to form the amphiphilic ACP named poly(2,3-dihydroxy butylene-alt-butylene dithioether)(abbreviated as P(DHB-a-BDT)below),which would deposite in situ to form the micro-sized capsules.Significantly, the dried capsules are robust enough to be rehydrated once the water was added and almost restored their original morphologies.Further elucidation showed that the Young's modulus of these capsules exceeded 1 GPa.As long as we know,it is the first time for the mechanical properties of the ACP-based microstructures being investigated.Besides, functionalization could be achieved simultaneously with the formation process. As a proof of concept,positive-charged capsules were successfully obtained through click copolymerization.Stemming from the unique characteristics of amphiphilic ACPs which combined both merits of click chemistry and interfacial reactions, all these features of the current method as well as the resultant capsules may promote the application of the polymeric capsules.

文摘Recently, with the efforts of food specialists, protein sources in the diet is rapidly changing.Consequently, novel products based on plant proteins or lab-grown proteins are increasingly being introduced to consumers. However, the food industry is facing new challenges in creating natural, innovative, accessible, and nutritious dairy-free alternatives.Designing dairy-free cheese alternatives with beneficial nutritional profiles, bioavailability, and digestibility requires a thorough understanding of the molecular characteristics of plant-derived ingredients, their structural assembly, and their role in physicochemical and sensory properties of the final product. In other words, with a deep knowledge of the nature of plant-based ingredients and the intelligent control of intermolecular interactions, these ingredients can be used to produce dairy-free cheese alternatives with the same characteristics as dairy products. Therefore, this review aims to synthesize current knowledge on production techniques and key factors influencing the design of dairy-free cheese alternatives.By examining the interactions between carbohydrates, proteins, and other ingredients,as well as their ability to replicate the functional and textural properties of traditional dairy cheeses, this review provides valuable insights for the development of high-quality dairy-free cheese alternatives. In the design of these alternatives, fractionation and tissue disruption routes are employed. The difference in the number and distribution of their surface groups has a significant effect on ability of plant polysaccharides and proteins to interact with other molecules.Gel strength decreases with decreasing plant biopolymer concentration, bond strength, and crosslinking density. While heat treatment can unfold proteins and minimize their net charge, the hydrophobic attraction becomes the primary driver of protein-protein interactions in plant-based cheeses. In contrast, the 3D-structure of dairy cheeses is stabilized through a combination of hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonds, and calcium bridges.

文摘The ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus was inoculated onto tissue-cultures of the hybrid poplar,Populus davidiana×P.bolleana,to evaluate the elemental defense effect to heavy metals copper and cadmium at different concentrations by simulating Alternaria alternata fungus infection. The enrichment capacity of Populus davidiana×P.bolleana for Cu and Cd was closely associated with the degree of heavy metal stress. There was a significant positive interaction of applying Cu and Cd and the inoculation with P.involutus on A.alternata leaf blight disease index. The incidence rate and disease index of leaf blight underwent a significant reduction compared with the controls.Similarly, the ratio of the area of disease spot to leaf area, incidence rate, and disease index for Populus davidiana×P.bolleana leaves inoculated with Paxillus involutus(Batsch)Fr.were significantly lower than those of their nonmycorrhizal counterparts. With increasing the degree of Cu and Cd stress,a gradual increase in the average value of the membership function for the incidence rate and disease index was observed, indicating the weakened pathogen's ability to cause infection and the improved resistance of Populus davidiana×P.bolleana to leaf blight disease under Cu and Cd stress. Moreover, superoxide dismutase enzyme activity in Populus davidiana×P.bolleana increased significantly, reaching levels of 411.0 U/g FW and 421.6 U/g FW under Cu and Cd treatments, respectively. These changes in metabolic products and antioxidant enzyme activities suggest that P.involutus may enhance the resistance of Populus davidiana×P.bolleana to the fungus,Alternaria alternata Fr.Keissel under heavy metal stress by modulating these physiological indicators.

文摘Alternate wetting and drying irrigation(AWD)significantly influences the cooking and eating quality of rice(Oryza sativa L.).However,the mechanisms by which AWD affects rice cooking and eating quality remain unclear.Lipid and free fatty acid contents in grains correlate positively with cooking and eating quality of rice. This study examined Yangdao 6(YD6,a conventional taste indica inbred)and Nanjing 9108(NJ9108,a superior taste japonica inbred)cultivated under conventional irrigation(CI),alternate wetting and moderate drying irrigation(AWMD),and alternate wetting and severe drying irrigation(AWSD)from 10 days after transplanting to maturity. The research investigated the relationship between lipid and free fatty acid biosynthesis in grains and the cooking and eating quality of rice.Compared to CI treatment,AWMD significantly enhanced the contents of lipid, total free fatty acids(TFFAs),free unsaturated fatty acids(FUFAs),linoleic acid, and oleic acid in milled rice by increasing activities of enzymes associated with lipid synthesis, while AWSD produced opposite effects.Correlation analysis revealed that elevated levels of lipid,TFFAs,FUFAs,linoleic acid, and oleic acid contribute to improved rice cooking and eating quality. The findings demonstrate that AWMD enhances cooking and eating quality of milled rice through optimization of lipid and fatty acid synthesis in rice grains.

文摘Rotational isomerism effects on the optical spectra of a push-pull nonlinear optical chro-mophore 2-dicyanomethylen-3-cyano-4-f2-[E-(4-N,N-di(2-acetoxyethyl)-amino)-phenylene-(3,4-dibutyl)-thien-5]-E-vinylg-5,5-dimethyl-2,5-dihydrofuran (FTC) in a few solvents have been studied using the time-dependent density functional theory in combination with the polarizable continuum model. It indicates that the bond length alternation can have an important effect on the optical spectra.

文摘Chloroplasts were isolated from spinach treated with taCl3, CeCl3, and NdCl3. The results suggested that 4f electron characteristics and alternation valence of rare earths had a close relationship with photosynthesis improvement.

文摘Wettability alternation phenomena is considered one of the most important enhanced oil recovery (EOR) mechanisms in the chemical flooding process and induced by the adsorption of surfactant on the rock surface. The results also show that DPD method provides a feasible approach to the problems of seepage flow with physicochemical phenomena and can be used to study the mechanism of EOR of chemical flooding.

文摘Based on seawater immersion,drying-wetting cycles, carbonation and drying-wetting cycles for coral aggregate sea-water concrete(CASC)with different strength grades, the effect of carbonation and drying-wetting cycles on chloride diffusion be-havior of CASC is studied. The results show that the free surface chloride concentration(Cs),free chloride diffusion coefficient(Df)and time-dependent index(m)of CASC in the drying-wetting cycles is obviously higher than that in seawater immersion. The Df and m of CASC of carbonation and drying-wetting cycles is higher than that in the drying-wetting cycles.Carbonation increases the Df and m of CASC,which is against CASC to resist chloride corrosion. The corrosion possibility of CASC structures in different ex-posed areas is as follows:splash zone(carbonation and drying-wetting cycles)>tidal zone(drying-wetting cycles)>underwater zone(seawater immersion).Besides, the chloride diffusion rate of C65-CASC is 17.8%-63.4%higher than that of C65-ordinary aggre-gate concrete(OAC)in seawater immersion(underwater zone).Therefore,anti-corrosion measures should be adopted to improve the service life of CASC structure in the oceanic environment.

文摘Cracks resulting from cyclic wetting and drying of expansive soils create discontinuities and anisotropy in the soil. The representative elementary volume(REV)defined by the continuous-media theory cannot be applied to cracked expansive soils that are considered discontinuous media. In this study, direct shear tests of three different scales(30 cm^(2),900 cm^(2),1963 cm^(2))and crack image analysis were carried out on undisturbed soil samples subjected to drying-wetting cycles in-situ.The REV size of expansive soil was investigated using the crack intensity factor(CIF)and soil cohesion. The results show that soil cohesion decreased with increasing sample area, and the development of secondary cracks further exacerbated the size effect of sample on cohesion of the soil.As shrinkage cracks developed, the REV size of the soil gradually increased and plateaued after 3−5 cycles.Under the same drying-wetting cycle conditions, the REV size determined using soil cohesion(REV-C)is 1.75 to 2.97 times the REV size determined using CIF(REV-CIF).Under the influence of shrinkage cracks, the average CIF is positively correlated with the REV size determined using different maximum permissible errors, with the coefficient of correlation greater than 0.9.A method for determining the REV-C based on crack image analysis is proposed, and the REV-C of expansive soil in the study area under different exposure times is given.

文摘Enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation(EICP)is an emanating,eco-friendly and potentially sound technique that has presented promise in various geotechnical applications. However, the durability and microscopic characteristics of EICP-treated specimens against the impact of drying-wetting(D-W)cycles is under-explored yet. This study investigates the evolution of mechanical behavior and pore charac-teristics of EICP-treated sea sand subjected to D-W cycles. The uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)tests, synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography(micro-CT),and three-dimensional(3D)recon-struction of CT images were performed to study the multiscale evolution characteristics of EICP-reinforced sea sand under the effect of D-W cycles. The potential correlations between microstructure characteristics and macro-mechanical property deterioration were investigated using gray relational analysis(GRA).Results showed that the UCS of EICP-treated specimens decreases by 63.7% after 15 D-W cycles. The proportion of mesopores gradually decreases whereas the proportion of macropores in-creases due to the exfoliated calcium carbonate with increasing number of D-W cycles. The micro-structure in EICP-reinforced sea sand was gradually disintegrated, resulting in increasing pore size and development of pore shape from ellipsoidal to columnar and branched. The gray relational degree suggested that the weight loss rate and UCS deterioration were attributed to the development of branched pores with a size of 100-1000 m m under the action of D-W cycles.Overall, the results in this study provide a useful guidancee for the long-term stability and evolution characteristics of EICP-reinforced sea sand under D-W weathering conditions.
文摘In our previous study, complete single DNA strands which were obtained from nuclei, chloroplasts and plant mitochondria obeyed Chargaff’s second parity rule, although those which were obtained from animal mitochondria deviated from the rule. They are strictly regulated in animal mitochondria only by the content of homonucleotides and their analogs.

文摘In the present study,we retrospectively analyzed 105382 prescriptions of antipyretic drugs for children(0–14 years of age)in the outpatient and emergency departments of Ningbo Women and Children’s Hospital from January to December 2019.Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are relatively safe and the most commonly used drugs in daily life.Due to different dosage forms, there are acetaminophen suspension drops, acetaminophen oral solution, ibuprofen suspension, and ibuprofen suppositories for children.Through investigation,we found that the age of antipyretic drugs used by children in our hospital ranged from 3 months to 14 years old, which could be divided into two groups:single drug use and alternating use of ibuprofen and acetaminophen, with an alternating use rate of 3.19%.There were differences between the two groups in terms of age, gender, the proportion of emergency departments use,and the amount of single prescription(P<0.05).The age of the alternating use group was younger, and the male proportion, the proportion of emergency departments use, single prescription amount of the alternating use group were higher. In the alternating use group, ibuprofen and acetaminophen of different dosage forms were used alternatively. After pair comparison analysis, they only had an age difference(P<0.008),which was in line with the principle that different dosage forms are suitable for different ages. The method of alternation with ibuprofen and acetaminophen is mainly used in the emergency departments and children of younger age because most of the children have a refractory fever, which is complicated and changes relatively fast. There was no record of adverse reactions about alternation of ibuprofen and acetaminophen in the software system of adverse reactions. However, this study was a retrospective analysis, and there were risks of missing records. Therefore, alternating use of ibuprofen and acetaminophen still couldn’t ignore the risk of adverse reactions.

文摘During recent decades, more frequent flood-drought alternations have been seen in China as a result of global climate change and intensive human activities, which have sig- nificant implications on water and food security. This study has significant implications on the flood and drought control and water resources management in the YRB-ML under the challenge of future climate change.

文摘Based on the drying-wetting cycles experiment and the carbonation-drying-wetting cycles experiment for coral aggregate seawater concrete(CASC)with different strength grades, the effects of carbonation-drying-wetting on the durability of CASC are studied with the surface state, mass loss rate, relative dynamic elastic modulus, ultrasonic wave velocity and cube compressive strength as indices. Results show that the mass loss rate of CASC increases gradually with the increase in cycle times in the drying-wetting and carbonation-drying-wetting cycles. The mass loss rate increases relatively slowly at the initial stage but it increases remarkably after 10 cycles. The relative dynamic elastic modulus and ultrasonic wave velocity decrease gradually with the increase in cycle times. After 6 cycles, the decrease rate of the relative dynamic elastic modulus and ultrasonic wave velocity of CASC tends to be flat and the surface is slightly damaged.Compared with the initial 28 d cube compressive strength, the cube compressive strength of CASC decreases by 8.8%to 11.0%.Drying-wetting cycles and carbonation can accelerate seawater erosion on CASC,and drying-wetting cycles result in salting-out and accelerate the destruction of concrete. Therefore, the carbonation-drying-wetting accelerates the destruction of CASC.
