The fascination of Vietnamese with drums and drumming reaches back into the pre-historic when bronze drums (Dong Son), from the Red River Delta region of Vietnam's north, were prized trading commodities throughout the Asian world of that time. Now in the 21st century the Dong Son and other historically renowned drum types have become symbols for Vietnam's emergence into an international cultural and economic arena. This paper charts three Vietnamese international events that illustrate the emblematic use of traditional drumming as a nationalistic symbol of modern Vietnam: The Third Asian Indoor Games held in Hanoi in 2009 opened with a drumming spectacle using battle drums; the Jubilee celebrations of the Vietnamese Catholic Church in 2010, opened in the north in the Ha Nam province with an immense traditional drumming performance within its religious setting; the 2012 Hue International Arts Festival incorporated "Resounding the Vietnamese Spirit", a specific drums and percussion festival, with performances using Binh Dinh war drums, royal drums from Hue, Dong Son drums, and Tay Son battle drums. These displays of traditional drumming it is argued have popularised particular nationalistic styles of drumming amongst Vietnamese youth, extending from the use of drumming in lion dance performances to the emergence of small, youth drumming groups who perform in the streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City 展开更多

This study examines the rate of female answers to conspecific versus heterospecific male vibratory calls in three, closely related stonefly species:Zwicknia bifrons,Z.acuta, and Z.rupprechti.In a previous study those three species were recognized on the basis of their distinct male drumming calls along with differences in genital morphology and genetic divergence.During this study no-choice playback experiments using original male call samples from each species were performed, and the answer rate of females to con・specific and heterospecific signal variants was measured.Mixed effect logistic regression models were used to test if male call species identity had a statistically significant effect on female answer probability.Females answered conspecific male calls with significantly higher probability than heterospecific calls in all the three examined species, suggesting that the divergence of vibrational communication can be an important component of the prezygotic isolation between them.Low,but well detectable responsiveness to heterospecific calls was observable between Z.bifrons and Z.acuta, the two species closest to each other regarding mitochondrial genetic divergence and male call pattern similarity. Thus, our results are most congruent with a tight, gradual coevolution of male calls and female preferences. 展开更多

Taking simultaneous variations in both particle volume and density into account, the radial mixing and segregation of binary granular bed in a rotating drum half loaded were investigated by a 3D discrete element method. Then, based on the competition theory of condensation and percolation, radial segregation due to differences in particle volume and/or density was analyzed. The results show that if either percolation effect induced by volume difference or condensation effect induced by density difference dominates in the active layer of moving bed, separation will occur. Controlling the volume ratio or density ratio of the two types of particles can achieve an equilibrium state between percolation and condensation, and then homogenous mixture can be obtained. When the percolation balances with the condensation, the relationship between volume ratioand density ratiopresents nearly a power function. Scaling up a rotating drum will not affect the mixing degree of the granular bed so long as the volume ratio and density ratio are predefined. 展开更多

Acoupled biharmonic spline and linear interpolation algorithm was proposed to create a three-dimensional smooth deposit model with minimal curvature containing grade and position data. To obtain the optimal technical parameters, such as cuttingheight and drum diameter, a virtual longwall mining procedure was modelled by simulating the actual fully mechanized longwall mining process. Based on the above work, a bauxite deposit in a longwall mining panel was modelled by scattered grade data from ores sampled on the entry wall. The deposit was then demarcated by industrial indexes and sliced according to the virtual longwallmining procedure. The results show that the proposed interpolation algorithm can depict the stratiform structure of bauxite depositsand that the uncovered bauxite deposit has high proportions of high-grade and rich ore. The ranges of optimal cutting height and drum diameters are 1.72-2.84 m and 1.42-1.72 m, respectively. Finally, an intellectualized longwall mining procedure was designed to guide the mining process with the lowest dilution and loss rates. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to determine if the Drums Alive Kids Beats intervention could improve behavior in children with developmental delays (DD). The original pilot study that this study on behavior is linked to is titled, “The Effects of a Drums Alive Kids Beats Intervention on the Physical Performance and Motor Skills of Children with Developmental Delays,” which was published in the December edition of the Open Journal of Pediatrics (OJPED, Vol.11 No.4 2021). During the facilitation of said intervention on physical and motor skills, the facilitators noticed unanticipated improvements in behavior, both individually and as a community through better awareness, self-control, self-efficacy, social interaction, and positive energy. Therefore, while maintaining the integrity of the MOT 4 - 6 testing protocols and Drums Alive intervention, a parallel study was conducted to objectively measure six behavioral domains, namely, motivation, impulse control, coordination, concentration, implementation of tasks, and creativity using a self-designed measurement tool with three elements for each domain that was approved by Dr. Heiner Lagenkamp, Department of Sports and Physical Activities, Teaching and Research, Ruhr University, Germany. The 20 participants were German students between 5.10 and 10.2 years of age with no inclusion or exclusion characteristics who were divided into two intervention groups, IG Kindergarten (IG Kinder) and IG Elementary (IG Elem), with varied DD, i.e., transgressive behavior, ADHD, ADD, autism, anger management, visual acuity, self-control, and self-esteem. During the MOT 4 - 6 study and Drums Alive Kids Beats intervention, the facilitators monitored and assessed each participant for pre- and post-performance vis a vis behavior concurrently with physical and motoric skills. As the original study provided statistically significant improvements of between 14% - 24% in physical and motor skill performance with regards to overall scoring and 7 subdivisions of tasks, the results of this parallel study on behavior, with its 6 domains and 18 elements of between 24% - 28%, were even more compelling. The evidence indicated that the Drums Alive Kids Beats intervention with its multidisciplinary approach of music, movement, and drumming, could be used as an effective tool and therapeutic approach to improve behavior in children with developmental delays. 展开更多

The objective of this original pilot study was to determine if the Drums Alive<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&reg;</span> Kids Beats intervention could provide statistically significant improvements to physical and motor skill performance on participants with Developmental Delays (DD) using the Dusseldorf Motor-Proficiency-Test for children (MOT 4-6) model. The researchers selected the research-based Drums Alive Kids Beat intervention because of its multidisciplinary methodology that in previous studies demonstrated positive effects on physiological, psychological, neurological, educational, rhythmical, and socio-emotional literacy. Facilitators used standardized Drums Alive approved lesson plans and equipment to conduct the intervention through a battery of music, movement and drumming-centered exercises and activities. The 30 participants were German students between 4.9 and 10.2 years of age, without any inclusion or exclusion characteristics, who were divided into three groups consisting of two intervention groups: IG Kindergarten (IG Kinder), IG Elementary<span style="font-family:;" "=""><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> (IG Elem) with varied physical, social, and emotional DD that affected gross and fine motor skills, movement, coordination, and behavioral control;and, a Control Group (CG) that had normal physical and motor skill development (</span><b><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Table 1</span></b><span style="font-family:Verdana;">). The results of the study suggested that the Drums Alive Kids Beats intervention provided statistically significant improvements in physical and motor skill performance in children with DD, namely, 24% improvement (IG Kinder), 14% (IG Elem) vice a minor 4% improvement (CG). Of note, during this study to measure physical capability pre- and post-intervention, the facilitators noticed significant improvements in behavior in both IG groups;therefore, they chose to conduct a collateral study to measure six behavioral domains which will be documented in a future publication to demonstrate the exclusive relationship between the Drums Alive Kids Beats intervention and improvement in behavior.</span></span> 展开更多

Cyclic total reflux(CTR) batch distillation is a promising mode of the process but lacking of appropriate modeling for the period of filling the reflux drum.A new dynamic modeling method for the simulation of CTR batch distillation is proposed in this work,in which the changes in column holdup and liquid flow rate during the filling of the drum, and the consequent change in valid number of theoretical plates are considered. The effect of drum holdup on operation time is investigated and the optimal drum holdup is obtained from the simulation. The dynamic modeling is compared to the conventional modeling without consideration of change in liquid flow rate. The experimental result shows that the present modeling is more reliable and more accurate, especially for the column with large liquid holdup. 展开更多

Automatic navigation of an articulated drum roller, which is an articulated steering type vehicle widely used in the construction industry, is highly expected for operation cost reduction and improvement of work effi- ciency. In order to achieve the path following control, considering that its steering system is articulated steering and two frames are articulated by an active revolute joint, a kinematic model and an error dynamic state-space equation of an articulated drum roller are proposed. Besides, a state- feedback control law based on Lyapunov stability theory is also designed, which can be proved to achieve the purpose of control by the analysis of stability. What's more, to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, simu- lation under the MATLAB/Simulink and experiments using positioning algorithm and errors correction at the uneven construction site are performed, with initial dis- placement error (-1.5 m), heading error (-0.11 tad) and steering angle (-0.19 rad). Finally, simulation and exper- imental results show that the errors and steering angle can decrease gradually, and converge to zero with time. Meanwhile, the control input is not saturated. An articu- lated drum roller can lock into a desired path with the proposed method in uneven fields. 展开更多

This paper presents a piezoelectric-metal structure called a drum transducer. An equation for calculating the resonance frequency of the drum transducer is obtained based on thin plate elastic theory of piezoelectric and metal material combined with the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The finite element method (FEM) was used to predict the excitation frequency of the drum transducer. To verify the theoretical analysis, the input impedance characteristic of the drum transducer was measured using an experimental method. The results obtained from theoretical analysis were in very good agreement with those from the FEM and experimental results. The effect of geometrical changes to the thick-walled steel ring of the drum transducer at the first resonance frequency is also described. The calculated results were found to be in good agreement with the FEM results. The results indicate that the first resonance frequency of the drum decreases with the increasing inner diameter of the thick-walled steel ring. 展开更多

The hydraulic system plays an important role in supplying power and its transition to other working parts of a coal shearer machine. In this paper, the reliability of the hydraulic system of a drum shearer was analyzed. A case study was done in the Tabas Coal Mine in Iran for failure data collection. The results of the statistical analysis show that the time between failures (TBF) data of this system followed the 3-parameters Weibull distribution. There is about a 54% chance that the hydraulic system of the drum shearer will not fail for the first 50 h of operation. The developed model shows that the reliability of the hydraulic system reduces to a zero value after approximately 1 650 hours of operation. The failure rate of this system decreases when time increases. Therefore, corrective maintenance (run-to-t^ailure) was selected as the best maintenance strategy for it. 展开更多

To solve the problem of a low coal-loading rate being exhibited by the drum shearer on Chinese thin coal seams, systematic tests and research were performed to study the pivotal factors’influences on drum coal-loading rate using a model test method. The effects of the drum hub diameter, cutting depth, vane helix angle, drum rotation speed and hauling speed on drum coal-loading rate were determined under circumstances of coal-loading with drum ejection and pushing modes, and reasons for these phenomena were analyzed. The results indicate that the influence of the drum cutting depth on the drum coal-loading rate is the most significant. The parameters of hub diameter, drum rotation speed and hauling speed can influence the drum coal-loading rate by cutting the coals’filling rate in the drum. The parameters of vane helix angle and drum rotation speed can influence drum coal-loading rates by influencing the ratio of cutting coals’tangential and axial speed in the drum. The coal-loading rate with drum ejection is clearly higher than that observed with drum pushing.Research in this study can provide support to design the drum structure and select drum operational parameters for a thin coal seam shearer. 展开更多

This paper presents a laboratory experimental study on particle breakage of sand subjected to friction and collision,by a number of drum tests on granular materials(silica sand No.3 and ceramic balls)to investigate the characteristics of particle breakage and its effect on the characteristics of grain size distribution of sand.Particle breakage increased in up convexity with increasing duration of drum tests, but increased linearly with increasing number of balls.Particle breakage showed an increase, followed by a decrease while increasing the amount of sand. There may be existence of a characteristic amount of sand causing a maximum particle breakage.Friction tests caused much less particle breakage than collision tests did.Friction and collision resulted in different mechanisms of particle breakage, mainly by abrasion for friction and by splitting for collision. The fines content increased with increasing relative breakage.Particle breakage in the friction tests(abrasion)resulted in a sharper increase but with a smaller total amount of fines content in comparison with that in the collision tests(splitting). For the collision tests, the fines content showed a decrease followed by an increase as the amount of sand increased, whereas it increased in up convexity with increasing number of balls. The characteristic grain sizes D_(10) and D_(30) decreased in down convexity with increasing relative breakage, which could be described by a natural exponential function. However, the characteristic grain sizes D50 and D60 decreased linearly while increasing the relative breakage. In addition, the coefficients of uniformity and curvature of sand showed an increase followed by a decrease while increasing the relative breakage. 展开更多

A method based on solution of the inverse heat conduction problem was presented for online stress monitoring and fatigue life analysis of boiler drums. The mathematical model of the drum temperature distribution is based on the assumptions that the difference of temperature along the longitudinal axis of the boiler drum is negligible with changes only in the radial direction and the circumferential direction, and that the outer surface of drum is thermaUy insulated. Combining this model with the control-volume method provides temperatures at different points on a cross-section of the drum. With the temperature data, the stresses and the life expectancy of the boiler drum are derived according to the ASME code. Applying this method to the cold start-up process of a 300 MW boiler demonstrated the absence of errors caused by the boundary condition assumptions on the inner surface of the drum and testified that the method is an applicable technique for the online stress monitoring and fatigue life analysis of boiler drums. 展开更多
