Based on the expression proposed by WANG for the local plastic shear deformation distribution in the adiabatic shear band(ASB) using gradient-dependent plasticity, the effects of 10 parameters on the adiabatic shear sensitivity were studied. The experimental data for a flow line in the ASB obtained by LIAO and DUFFY were fitted by use of the curve-fitting least squares method and the proposed expression. The critical plastic shear strains corresponding to the onset of the ASB for Ti-6Al-4V were assessed at different assigned ASB widths. It is found that the proposed expression describes well the non-linear deformation characteristics of the flow line in the ASB.Some parameters in the JOHNSON-COOK model are back-calculated using different critical plastic shear strains. The adiabatic shear sensitivity decreases as initial static yield stress, work to heat conversion factor and strain-rate parameter decrease, which is opposite to the effects of density, heat capacity, ambient temperature and strain-hardening exponent. The present model can predict the ASB width evolution process. The predicted ASB width decreases with straining until a stable value is reached. The famous model proposed by DODD and BAI only can predict a final stable value. 展开更多

The main spatial distribution features of shear rate in a stirred tank operated with five different radial and axial flow impellers were presented with particle image velocimetry(PIV)experiments. Not only the average shear rate in the whole tank but also the local value in the vicinity of impeller increases linearly with impeller speed.Furthermore, the shear coefficient(Ks,imp)at the impeller outlet is linearly related to the impeller flow number(Nq)and decreases with the increase of Nq in general at the constant power consumption per unit volume(Pv).During scale-up based on the constant Pv and geometric similarity,CFD results show that the volume-averaged shear rate(cavg)for RDT decreases faster than that of other impellers with the impeller tip velocity(Utip). The novel multi-blade combined(MBC)impeller with the increased height-to-diameter ratio of the stirred tank is able to more effectively improve the distribution uniformity of shear rate at the same Pv after scale-up.These studies provide a data basis for selecting the impeller types and improving the shear rate environment in the large-scale stirred tank. 展开更多

Traditional methods focus on the ultimate bending moment of glulam beams and the fracture failure of materials with defects, which usually depends on empirical parameters. There is no systematic theoretical method to predict the stiffness and shear distribution of glulam beams in elastic-plastic stage, and consequently, the failure of such glulam beams cannot be predicted effectively. To address these issues,an analytical method considering material nonlinearity was proposed for glulam beams, and the calculating equations of deflection and shear stress distribution for different failure modes were established. The proposed method was verified by experiments and numerical models under the corresponding conditions. Results showed that the theoretical calculations were in good agreement with experimental and numerical results, indicating that the equations proposed in this paper were reliable and accurate for such glulam beams with wood material in the elastic-plastic stage ignoring the influence of mechanic properties in radial and tangential directions of wood.Furthermore, the experimental results reported by the previous studies indicated that the method was applicable and could be used as a theoretical reference for predicting the failure of glulam beams. 展开更多

The spherical silica particles in narrow size distribution with different diameters of 90 nm, 200 nm, 320 nm and 400 nm were prepared by the modified St?ber method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and dynamic light scattering(DLS). The phase composition of particles was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that each of the silica particle samples was in amorphous state. The shear thickening fluids(STFs) comprising 53 vol.%of silica particles and 47 vol.% of polyethylene glycol with molecular weight of 200 g mol^(-1)(PEG200) were prepared and evaluated. The influence of size and size distribution on the critical shear rate and the intensity of shear thickening were analyzed. The STFs prepared by silica nanoparticles with a diameter of90 nm showed the giant rheological effect with the critical shear rate of 2.51 s^(-1), the largest viscosity of45,500 Pa·s and the yield stress of 181 kPa. The experiments and the analysis results demonstrated that the suspensions prepared by nanoparticles have high intensity of shear thickening. 展开更多

In this study, the relationship between skin structure and shear strength distribution of thin-wall injection molded polypropylene (PP) molded at different molecular weight and molecular distribution was investigated. Skin-core structure, cross-sectional morphology, crystallinity, crystal orientation, crystal morphology and molecular orientation were evaluated by using polarized optical microscope, differential scanning calorimeter, X-ray spectroscopic analyzer and laser Raman spectroscopy, respectively, while the shear strength distribution was investigated using a micro cutting method called SAICAS (Surface And Interfacial Cutting Analysis System). The results indicated that the difference of molecular weight and molecular weight distribution showed own skin layer thickness. Especially, high molecular weight sample showed thicker layer of the lamellar orientation and molecular orientation than low molecular weight sample. In addition, wide molecular distribution sample showed large crystal orientation layer. 展开更多

Rock anchors are a common safety measure for stabilising large-scale infrastructure, such as bridge towers, retaining walls, rock slopes and windmills. There are four principal failure modes for rock anchors:(a)tensile failure of the steel anchor,(b)anchor-grout interface failure,(c)grout-rock interface failure, and(d)rock mass uplift.Field tests were performed in a limestone quarry. These tests were designed to test failure modes B and C through pullout. In the tests of failure mode B,the shear stress on the anchor-grout interface is the largest at the top of the grout column and attenuates towards the distal end for small loads. The shear stress becomes uniformly distributed when the applied load is approximately 50%of the ultimate pullout load. The anchors designed to test failure mode C were installed with an endplate and had a higher toughness than the straight bar anchors. The shear stress on the grout-rock interface is the largest at the endplate and attenuates upward before slip starts along the interface. When the ultimate pullout load is reached, and the grout column starts to slip, the shear stress is approximately constant. The bond shear strength on the anchor-grout interface was approximately 20%of the uniaxial compressive strength of the grout, and the bond strength of the grout-rock interface was around 5%for that of the grout. The grout-rock interface is likely determined by whichever is weaker, the grout or the rock. 展开更多

To understand and develop new nanostructure materials with specific mechanical properties, a good knowledge of the elastic strain response is mandatory. Here we investigate the linear elasticity response in the modified phase-field-crystal(MPFC) model. The results show that two different propagation modes control the elastic interaction length and time, which determine whether the density waves can propagate or not. By quantitatively calculating the strain field, we find that the strain distribution is indeed extremely uniform in case of elasticity. Further, we present a detailed theoretical analysis for the orientation dependence and temperature dependence of shear modulus. The simulation results show that the shear modulus reveals strong anisotropy and the one-mode analysis provides a good guideline for determining elastic shear constants until the system temperature falls below a certain value. 展开更多

In dialysis treatment, the radio-cephalic arteriovenous fistula (RCAVF) is a commonly used fistula, yet its low maturation rate remains a challenge. To enhance surgical outcomes, the relationship between stenosis-prone locations and RCAVF anastomosis angle is studied during maturation by developing two sets of RCAVF models for early (non-mature) and mature RCAVFs at five anastomosis angles. The impact of hemodynamics and wall shear stress (WSS) is examined to determine optimal anastomotic angles. Results indicate that acute angles produce more physiological WSS distributions and fewer disturbed regions, with early stenosis-prone regions located near the anastomosis that shift to the bending venous segment during remodeling. A pilot study comparing clinical and numerical results is conducted for validation. 展开更多

Shear stress distribution prediction in open channels is of utmost importance in hydraulic structural engineering as it directly affects the design of stable channels. In this study,at first,a series of experimental tests were conducted to assess the shear stress distribution in prismatic compound channels. The shear stress values around the whole wetted perimeter were measured in the compound channel with different floodplain widths also in different flow depths in subcritical and supercritical conditions.A set of,data mining and machine learning algorithms including Random Forest(RF),M5P,Random Committee,KStar and Additive Regression implemented on attained data to predict the shear stress distribution in the compound channel. Results indicated among these five models;RF method indicated the most precise results with the highest R2 value of 0.9.Finally,the most powerful data mining method which studied in this research compared with two well-known analytical models of Shiono and Knight method(SKM)and Shannon method to acquire the proposed model functioning in predicting the shear stress distribution. The results showed that the RF model has the best prediction performance compared to SKM and Shannon models. 展开更多

Characterizing nonhomogeneous elastic property distribution of soft tissues plays a crucial role in disease diagnosis and treatment. In this paper,we will apply the optical coherence elastography to reconstruct the shear modulus elastic property distribution of a bilayer solid. In the computational aspect,we adopt a well-established inverse technique that solves for every nodal shear modulus in the problem domain(NO method).Additionally,we also propose a novel inverse method that assumes the shear moduli merely vary along the thickness of the bilayer solid(TO method). The inversion tests using simulated data demonstrate that TO method performs better in reconstructing the shear modulus distribution.Further,we utilize the experimental data obtained from the optical coherence tomography to reconstruct the shear modulus distribution of a bilayer phantom. We observe that the quality of the reconstructed shear modulus distribution obtained by the partial displacement measurement is better than that obtained by the full-field displacement measurement.Particularly, merely using the displacement component along the loading direction significantly improves the reconstructed results. This work is of great significance in applying optical coherence elastography(OCE)to characterize the elastic property distribution of layered soft tissues such as skins and corneas. 展开更多
