The principle of optical time-domain reflection localization limits the sensing spatial resolution of Raman distributed optical fiber sensing. We provide a solution for a Raman distributed optical fiber sensing system with kilometer-level sensing distance and submeter spatial resolution.Based on this,we propose a Raman distributed optical fiber sensing scheme based on chaotic pulse cluster demodulation.Chaotic pulse clusters are used as the probe signal,in preference to conventional pulsed or chaotic single-pulse lasers.Furthermore, the accurate positioning of the temperature variety region along the sensing fiber can be realized using chaotic pulse clusters. The proposed demodulation scheme can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio by improving the correlation between the chaotic reference and the chaotic Raman anti-Stokes scattering signals. The experiment achieved a sensing spatial resolution of 30 cm at a distributed temperature-sensing distance of∼6.0 km.Furthermore,we explored the influence of chaotic pulse width and detector bandwidth on the sensing spatial resolution. In addition, the theoretical experiments proved that the sensing spatial resolution in the proposed scheme was independent of the pulse width and sensing distance. 展开更多

Optical solitons,as self-sustaining waveforms in a nonlinear medium where dispersion and nonlinear effects are balanced, have key applications in ultrafast laser systems and optical communications.Physics-informed neural networks(PINN)provide a new way to solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation describing the soliton evolution by fusing data-driven and physical constraints. However, the grid point sampling strategy of traditional PINN suffers from high computational complexity and unstable gradient flow, which makes it difficult to capture the physical details efficiently. In this paper,we propose a residual-based adaptive multi-distribution(RAMD)sampling method to optimize the PINN training process by dynamically constructing a multi-modal loss distribution. With a 50%reduction in the number of grid points,RAMD significantly reduces the relative error of PINN and,in particular, optimizes the solution error of the(2+1)Ginzburg–Landau equation from 4.55%to 1.98%.RAMD breaks through the lack of physical constraints in the purely data-driven model by the innovative combination of multi-modal distribution modeling and autonomous sampling control for the design of all-optical communication devices.RAMD provides a high-precision numerical simulation tool for the design of all-optical communication devices, optimization of nonlinear laser devices, and other studies. 展开更多

The features of optical defects in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthetic type Ⅱ a diamond were characterized using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, before and after electron irradiation. The sample was cut within a {100} growth layer, and irradiated with 2 MeV electrons along the <100> axis. PL spectra of sample were collected under 532 nm and 355 nm laser excitation, at room temperature and 77 K, and linear scanning analysis along incident depth was applied to determine the distribution of defects. The pre-irradiation characterization results revealed uniformly distributed PL centers at 389 nm, 469 nm, 533 nm, 575 nm (ZPL of NV 0), 637 nm (ZPL of NV -), and 736.7/737.1 nm (ZPL doublet of SiV -). After irradiation, the differential responses of these as-grown defects were observed, alongside the emergence of irradiation-induced defects, namely 489 nm center, H3 center (ZPL at 504 nm) and GR1 center (ZPL at 741 nm). The maximum penetration depth of 2 MeV electron-irradiation induced defects was determined to be 2.1 mm. This work primarily presents the depth profiles of both as-grown and irradiation-induced defects in 2 MeV electrons irradiated diamond. The result provides experimental data for better understanding of the radiation effect in diamonds. Serving as a reference for diamond enhancement by electron irradiation. 展开更多

Quantum key distribution(QKD)optical networks can provide more secure communications. However, with the increase of the QKD path requests and key updates, network blocking problems will become severe. The blocking problems in the network can become more severe because each fiber link has limited resources(such as wavelengths and time slots). In addition,QKD optical networks are also affected by external disturbances such as data interception and eavesdropping, resulting in inefficient network communication. In this paper,we exploit the idea of protection path to enhance the anti-interference ability of QKD optical network.By introducing the concept of security metric,we propose a routing wavelength and time slot allocation algorithm(RWTA)based on protection path, which can lessen the blocking problem of QKD optical network.According to simulation analysis, the security-metric-based RWTA algorithm(SM-RWTA)proposed in this paper can substantially improve the success rate of security key(SK)update and significantly reduce the blocking rate of the network. It can also improve the utilization rate of resources such as wavelengths and time slots.Compared with the non-security-metric-based RWTA algorithm(NSM-RWTA),our algorithm is robust and can enhance the anti-interference ability and security of QKD optical networks. 展开更多

In recent years, machine learning(ML)techniques have been shown to be effective in accelerating the development process of optoelectronic devices. However,as"black box"models, they have limited theoretical interpretability. In this work,we leverage symbolic regression(SR)technique for discovering the explicit symbolic relationship between the structure of the optoelectronic Fabry-Perot(FP)laser and its optical field distribution, which greatly improves model transparency compared to ML.We demonstrated that the expressions explored through SR exhibit lower errors on the test set compared to ML models, which suggests that the expressions have better fitting and generalization capabilities. 展开更多

Despite the extensive use of distributed fiber optic sensing(DFOS)in monitoring underground structures, its potential in detecting structural anomalies, such as cracks and cavities,is still not fully understood. To contribute to the identification of defects in underground structures, this study conducted a four-point bending test of a reinforced concrete(RC)beam and uniaxial loading tests of an RC specimen with local cavities. The experimental results revealed the disparity in DFOS strain spike profiles between these two structural anomalies. The effectiveness of DFOS in the quantification of crack opening displacement(COD)was also demonstrated, even in cases where perfect bonding was not achievable between the cable and structures. In addition,DFOS strain spikes observed in two diaphragm wall panels of a twin circular shaft were also reported. The most probable cause of those spikes was identified as the mechanical behavior associated with local concrete contamination. With the utilization of the strain profiles obtained from laboratory tests and field monitoring, three types of multi-classifiers,based on support vector machine(SVM),random forest(RF),and backpropagation neural network(BP),were employed to classify strain profiles, including crack-induced spikes,non-crack-induced spikes, and non-spike strain profiles.Among these classifiers, the SVM-based classifier exhibited superior performance in terms of accuracy and model robustness. This finding suggests that the SVM-based classifier holds promise as a potential solution for the automatic detection and classification of defects in underground structures during long-term monitoring. 展开更多

A series of laboratory pull-out tests was conducted to study the effects of temperature on the performance and behaviours of fully grouted rock bolt specimens cured within a specific temperature range,as well as for different durations. Each specimen consisted of a 20M rebar bolt at 1300 mm embedment length grouted inside a Schedule 80 steel pipe using Portland cement grout at a 0.4 water-to-cement ratio. Two temperatures(20℃and 45℃)were explored to investigate the effects of geothermally active temperature conditions on fully grouted rock bolts.Distributed fiber optic sensors were employed to provide continuous strain profiles along the entire embedment length to observe micro-mechanisms and monitor internal specimen temperature change during testing. The specimens cured at 45℃generally resulted in higher grout UCS(in certain cases 25%e50%higher)compared to those at 20℃;the ultimate capacity was not significantly impacted as the specimens'embedment length allowed full development of the rock bolt's capacity. The resulting strain profile trends showed generally higher strains experienced by the shorter(i.e.3-d)curing duration specimens under both curing temperatures compared to long-term curing. The 45℃specimens generally experienced lower strains and faster strain profile attenuation compared to specimens cured at 20℃.Understanding these effects and further analysis of FGRB specimen behaviours over time provide insights for mobilized and critical embedment lengths, capacity development, and support system stabilization. This paper highlights the results of this study and aims to bridge selected gaps in existing literature with a view to aid practitioners. 展开更多

Phase-sensitive Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer(φ-OTDR)technology facilitates the real-time detection of vibration events along fiber optic cables by analyzing changes in Rayleigh scattering signals. This technology is widely used in applications such as intrusion monitoring and structural health assessments.Traditional signal processing methods, such as Support Vector Machines(SVM)and K-Nearest Neighbors(KNN),have limitations in feature extraction and classification in complex environments.Conversely,a single deep learning model often struggles with capturing long time-series dependencies and mitigating noise interference. In this study,we propose a deep learning model that integrates Convolutional Neural Network(CNN),Long Short-Term Memory Network(LSTM),and Transformer modules, leveraging φ-OTDR technology for distributed fiber vibration sensing event recognition. The hybrid model combines the CNN's capability to extract local features, the LSTM's ability to model temporal dynamics, and the Transformer's proficiency in capturing global dependencies. This integration significantly enhances the accuracy and robustness of event recognition. In experiments involving six types of vibration events, the model consistently achieved a validation accuracy of 0.92,and maintained a validation loss of approximately 0.2,surpassing other models, such as TAM+BiLSTM and CNN+CBAM.The results indicate that the CNN+LSTM+Transformer model is highly effective in handling vibration signal classification tasks in complex scenarios, offering a promising new direction for the application of fiber optic vibration sensing technology. 展开更多

We demonstrate a distributed two-dimensional(2D)strain-sensing system in optical frequency domain reflectometry(OFDR)with an Archimedean spiral arrangement of the sensing fiber. The Archimedean spiral describes a simple relationship between the radial radius and polar angle, such that each circle(the polar angle from0 to 2π)can sense the 2D strain in all directions. The strain between two adjacent circles can also be easily obtained because an Archimedean spiral facilitates sensing of every angle covering the full 2D range.Based on the mathematical relation of Archimedean spirals,we deduce the relationship between the one-dimensional position of the sensing fiber and 2D distribution in polar coordinates. The results of the experiment show that an Archimedean spiral arrangement system can achieve 2D strain sensing with different strain load angles. 展开更多

A distributed optical fiber disturbance detection system consisted of a Sagnac interferometer and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is demonstrated. Two interferometers outputs are connected to an electric band-pass filter via a detector respectively. The central frequencies of the two filters are selected adaptively according to the disturbance frequency. The disturbance frequency is obtained by either frequency spectrum of the two interferometers outputs. An alarm is given out only when the Sagnac interferometer output is changed. A disturbance position is determined by calculating a time difference with a cross-correlation method between the filter output connected to the Sagnac interferometer and derivative of the filter output connected to the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The frequency spectrum, derivative and cross-correlation are obtained by a signal processing system. Theory analysis and simulation results are presented. They show that the system structure and location method are effective, accurate, and immune to environmental variations. 展开更多

The development of Internet brings a great challenge to the survivability of the supporting distributed intelligent optical networks. The emergence of Active-Fault-Alarm (AFA) technology makes it possible for the system to be aware of the incoming or possible fault in advance and to provide possibility to develop a more active restoration mechanism. On this base, an Active Segment Pre-Restoration (ASPR) mechanism for distributed optical network is proposed. ASPR allows establishing a Segment Pre-Restoration Path (SPR-Path) as a work path, which is initiated by the local node, in advance of potential fault occuring and keeps the SPR-Path only during the low-quality or fault period. Simulation results show that the ASPR mechanism has better restoration performance compared with that of Active Restoration (AR) scheme. 展开更多

The device does not require a holding beam. An optical gain medium confined between 2 Bragg reflectors forms the device. One of the Bragg reflectors is detuned from the other by making its average refractive index slightly higher, and it has a negative nonlinear coefficient that is due to direct absorption at Urbach tail. At low light intensity in the structure, the detuned Bragg reflector does not provide optical feedback to start a laser mode. An optical pulse injected to the structure reduces the detuning of the nonlinear Bragg reflector and a laser mode builds up. The device is reset by detuning the second Bragg reflector optically by an optical pulse that generates electron-hole pairs by direct absorption. A mathematical model of the device is introduced. The model is solved numerically in time domain using a general purpose graphics processing unit (GPGPU) to increase accuracy and to reduce the computation time. The switching dynamics of the device are in nanosecond time scale. The device could be used for all optical data packet switching/routing. 展开更多

In the discipline of geotechnical engineering, fiber optic sensor based distributed monitoring has played an increasingly important role over the past few decades. Compared with conventional sensors, fiber optic sensors have a variety of exclusive advantages, such as smaller size, higher precision, and better corrosion resistance. These innovative monitoring technologies have been successfully applied for performance monitoring of geo-structures and early warning of potential geo- hazards around the world. In order to investigate their ability to monitor slope stability problems, a medium-sized model of soil nailed slope has been constructed in laboratory. The fully distributed Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensing technology was employed to measure the horizontal strain distributions inside the model slope. During model construction, a specially designed strain sensing fiber was buried in the soil mass. Afterward, the surcharge loading was applied on the slope crest in stages using hydraulic jacks and a reaction frame. During testing, an NBX-6o5o BOTDA sensing interrogator was used to collect the fiber optic sensing data. The test results have been analyzed in detail, which shows that the fiber optic sensors can capture the progressive deformation and failure pattern of the model slope. The limit equilibrium analyses were also conducted to obtain the factors ofsafety of the slope under different surface loadings. It is found that the characteristic maximum strains can reflect the stability of the model slope and an empirical relationship was obtained, This study verified the effectiveness of the distributed BOTDA sensing technology in performance monitoring of slope. 展开更多

The angular light-scattering measurement(ALSM) method combined with an improved artificial bee colony algorithm is introduced to determine aerosol optical constants and aerosol size distribution(ASD) simultaneously. Meanwhile, an optimized selection principle of the ALSM signals based on the sensitivity analysis and principle component analysis(PCA)is proposed to improve the accuracy of the retrieval results. The sensitivity analysis of the ALSM signals to the optical constants or characteristic parameters in the ASD is studied first to find the optimized selection region of measurement angles. Then, the PCA is adopted to select the optimized measurement angles within the optimized selection region obtained by sensitivity analysis. The investigation reveals that, compared with random selection measurement angles, the optimized selection measurement angles can provide more useful measurement information to ensure the retrieval accuracy. Finally, the aerosol optical constants and the ASDs are reconstructed simultaneously. The results show that the retrieval accuracy of refractive indices is better than that of absorption indices, while the characteristic parameters in ASDs have similar retrieval accuracy. Moreover, the retrieval accuracy in studying L-N distribution is a little better than that in studying Gamma distribution for the difference of corresponding correlation coefficient matrixes of the ALSM signals. All the results confirm that the proposed technique is an effective and reliable technique in estimating the aerosol optical constants and ASD simultaneously. 展开更多

This paper investigates the deformation and fracture propagation of sandstone specimen under uniaxial compression using the distributed fiber optic strain sensing(DFOSS)technology. It shows that the DFOSS-based circumferential strains are in agreement with the data monitored with the traditional strain gage. The DFOSS successfully scans the full-field view of axial and circumferential strains on the specimen surface. The spatiotemporal strain measurement based on DFOSS manifests crack closure and elastoplastic deformation, detects initialization of microcrack nucleation, and identifies strain localization within the specimen. The DFOSS well observes the effects of rock heterogeneity on rock deformation. The advantage of DFOSS-based strain acquisition includes the high spatiotemporal resolution of signals and the ability of full-surface strain scanning. The introduction to the DFOSS technology yields a better understanding of the rock damage process under uniaxial compression. 展开更多
