An array of distributed round synthetic jets was used to control a fully developed turbulent boundary layer. The study focused on the related skin friction drag reduction and mechanisms involved. The control effects were analyzed by measuring the streamwise velocities using a hot-wire anemometer downstream of the array.A reduction in the skin friction was observed both in the regions downstream of the orifices and in the regions between two adjacent orifices.A statistical analysis with the variable-interval time-averaging(VITA)technique demonstrated a weakened bursting intensity with synthetic jet in the near-wall region. The streamwise vortices were lifted by the upwash effect caused by synthetic jet and induced less low-speed streaks. The control mechanism acted in a way to suppress the dynamic interaction between the streamwise vortices and low-speed streaks and to attenuate the turbulence production in the near-wall region. The forcing frequency was found to be a more relevant parameter when synthetic jet was applied in turbulent boundary layer flow control.A higher forcing frequency induced a higher reduction in the skin friction. The power spectral density and autocorrelation of the fluctuating velocities showed that the synthetic jets gradually decayed in the streamwise direction, having an effect as far as 34.5 times the displacement thickness that was on the trailing edge of the distributed synthetic jets array. 展开更多

A novel DC plasma torch with multiple cathodes is developed for generating laminar, transitional and turbulent plasma jets. The jet's characteristics, including jet appearance, voltage fluctuation, thermal efficiency, specific enthalpy, and distributions of temperature, pressure, and velocity, are experimentally investigated. The results show that as the gas flow rate increases, the plasma jet transforms first from the laminar state to the transitional state and second to the turbulent state. Compared with the transitional/turbulent jet, the laminar jet possesses not only a better stability and a longer hightemperature zone but also a higher average/core temperature and a higher specific enthalpy at the nozzle's outlet. With the change of jet states from the laminar to the turbulent flow, the core pressure and velocity at the nozzle's outlet increase, while the decaying rates of temperature/pressure/velocity along the jet's axial direction increase sharply. Furthermore, applications of laminar, transitional and turbulent jets for zirconia spray coating are described. The test results indicate that the long laminar jet is favorable for the deposition of a high-quality coating because the powder particles injected into the laminar jet may have better heating and lower kinetic energy. 展开更多

By using the mesh resolution control method based on the nozzle scale,a paralleled super numerical simulation and high-quality mesh model of the launch jet dynamics for new-generation launch vehicles was developed.Based upon this,a transient numerical simulation method, combining the pressure and velocity, tightly coupled algorithm and SST turbulence model, was used to complete the unsteady numerical simulation of the launch jet dynamics of the new-generation launch vehicles. The numerical simulation results of the launch jet dynamics, for the new-generation launch vehicles, demonstrated that despite the complex structure of the launch platform, the jet flows of the core stage and booster engines were generally smoothly channeled into the double deflecting trench through the launch platform’s diversion hole at the initial stage of ignition. After the lift off,the jet flows of the core stage and the booster engines began to affect and ablate the grillage-shaped beam and the adjoined surface of the launch platform adjacent to the booster engines. At a higher altitude after lift off,it could be seen for the new-generation launch vehicles the ablation range of high temperature and high-speed jet flows on the launch platform further expanded, which would have a severe ablation effect on the fuel filling tower near the booster engines and even all the support arms. The numerical simulation of launch jet dynamics also established that the jet flows embers at the bottom of the core stage rocket body continued to be affected for an extended period of time due to the large number of nozzles in the new-generation launch vehicles engine and the weak suction effect of the jet flows in the core-stage engines. 展开更多
