This study pioneers the dissimilar joining of VCoNi-MEA and 17–4 precipitation hardening stainless steel (17–4PH STS) using state-of-the-art green laser beam welding (LBW). To evaluate and optimize the experimental parameters, two welding speeds (200 and 300 mm/s) along with post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) were incorporated. High-quality welded joints with a single-phase face-centered cubic (FCC) structure in the fusion zone (FZ), minimal precipitates (< 1.6 %), and no visible cracks were successfully created. The LBW process demonstrated effective low-heat input characteristics, evident from a considerably narrow heat-affected zone (HAZ). Control over FZ width and grain size was achieved, measuring 600 and 112 µm at low welding speed and 250 and 49 µm at high welding speed, respectively, significantly lower than previous studies. A remarkably high yield strength (YS) of ∼620 MPa and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) up to 845 MPa were observed in the as-welded conditions, improving to ∼645 and 875 MPa, respectively, after PWHT. This enhancement in mechanical properties is primarily attributed to lattice friction induced by V addition. PWHT also improved joint ductility, increasing from 3.5 % to 8.6 % (low-speed) and from 6.3 % to 9.2 % (high-speed). The reduction in crystallographic orientation achieved using a higher welding speed and PWHT emerged as a major reason for improved mechanical properties. Slip-based deformation mechanisms dominated across all conditions, featuring crystallographically aligned slip bands. Interactions between existing and additional slip bands formed a dense dislocation network crucial for enhanced elongation after PWHT. Thermodynamic parameters elucidating phase stability in the observed FZs and contributions to superior YS were calculated and comprehensively discussed.展开更多

Most of the rotating pin was inserted into the aluminum alloy side through a pin-off technique, and sound welds were obtained at a rotation speed of 1000 r/min and a welding speed of 80 mm/min. Complicated microstructure was formed in the nugget, in which vortex-like pattern and lamella structure could be found. No intermetallic compounds were found in the nugget. The hardness distribution indicates that the hardness at the copper side of the nugget is higher than that at the aluminum alloy side, and the hardness at the bottom of the nugget is generally higher than that in other regions. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the dissimilar welds are 152 MPa and 6.3%, respectively. The fracture surface observation shows that the dissimilar joints fail with a ductile-brittle mixed fracture mode durin~ tensile test.展开更多

Sound weld was obtained at a rotational speed of 1050 r/min and a welding speed of 30 mm/min. Intercalation structure formed at the crown and Cu/weld nugget (WN) area promotes interracial diffusion and metallurgical bonding of aluminum and copper. However, corrosion morphology reveals the weak bonding mechanism of internal interface, which causes the joint failing across the interface with a brittle-ductile mixed fracture mode. The tensile strength of the joint is 148 MPa, which is higher than that of the aluminum matrix. Crystal defects and grain refinement by severely plastic deformation during friction stir welding facilitate short circuit diffusion and thus accelerate the formation of A14Cu9 and A12Cu intermetallic compounds (IMCs). XRD results show that A14Cu9 is mainly in Cu/WN transition zone. The high dislocation density and formation of dislocation loops are the major reasons of hardness increase in the WN.展开更多

Using the selected welding parameters, excellent surface appearance forms, but the interface macrograph for each lap joint cross-section is different. With the increase of welding speed or the decrease of tool rotation rate, the amount of Ti alloy particles stirred into the stir zone by the force of tool pin decreases continuously. Moreover, the failure loads of the lap joints also decrease with increasing welding speed and the largest value is achieved at welding speed of 60 mm/min and tool rotation rate of 1500 r/min, where the interracial zone can be divided into 3 kinds of layers. The microhardness of the lap joint shows an uneven distribution and the maximum hardness of HV 502 is found in the middle of the stir zone.展开更多

The results show that the temperature distribution in the joints is uneven. Mg alloy welds present a fine equiaxed grain structure. There exists a transition layer consisting mainly of AlFe, AlFe3 and Mg(Fe, Al)2O4 phases at Mg/steel interface, and it is the weakest link in Mg?steel joints. The welding heat input and weld Al content have the significant effect on the joint strength. The joint strength increases with increasing the heat input from 1680 J/cm to 2093 J/cm, due to promoting Mg/steel interface reaction. When weld Al content is increased to 6.20%, the joint strength reaches 192 MPa, 80% of Mg alloy base metal strength. It is favorable to select the suitable welding heat input and weld Al content for improving joint strength.展开更多

The system has a significant influence on the overall aircraft performance and its safety. In order to further increase already high reliability and safety, Airbus has imple- mented a dissimilar redundancy actuation system (DRAS) in its aircraft. The DRAS consists of a hydraulic actuation system (HAS) and an electro-hydrostatic actuation system (EHAS), in which the HAS utilizes a hydraulic source (HS) to move the control surface and the EHAS utilizes an elec- trical supply (ES) to provide the motion force. This paper focuses on the performance degradation processes and fault monitoring strategies of the DRAS, establishes its reliability model based on the generalized stochastic Petri nets (GSPN), and carries out a reliability assessment considering the fault monitoring coverage rate and the false alarm rate. A finite element model, including cladding, buttering, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and dissimilar metal multi-pass welding, is developed based on SYSWELD software to investigate the evolution of residual stress in the aforementioned manufacturing process. The results reveal a large tensile axial residual stress, which exists at the weld zone on the inner surface, leads to a high sensitivity to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). PWHT process before dissimilar metal multi-pass welding process has a great in?uence on the magnitude and distribution of final axial residual stress. The risk of SCC on the inner surface of the pipe will increase if PWHT process is not taken into account. Therefore, such crucial thermal manufacturing process such as cladding, buttering and post-weld heat treatment, besides the multi-pass welding process, should be considered in the numerical model in order to accurately predict the distribution and the magnitude of the residual stress.展开更多

This study aims to improve the mechanical properties of welded samples by preventing the fracture location at the Mg/Al interface. Friction stir welding was performed to join Mg to Al at different rotational and travel speeds. The microstructure of the welded samples showed the IMCs layers containing Al12Mg17(γ) and Al3Mg2(β) at the welding zone with a thickness(< 3.5 μm). Mechanical properties were mainly affected by the thickness of the IMCs, which was governed by welding parameters. The highest tensile strength was obtained at 600 r/min and 40 mm/min with a welding efficiency of 80%. The specimens could fracture along the boundary at the thermo-mechanically affected zone in the Mg side of the welded joint.展开更多

文摘This study investigates the microstructure evolution and mechanical behavior of a laser-welded dissimilar joint between wrought AZ80 and cast AM60 magnesium alloys.Microstructure analysis revealed a distinct fusion zone(FZ)spanning 1.5 mm and a heat-affected zone(HAZ)measuring 550μm in width adjacent to the AZ80 alloy.Meanwhile, the AM60 side showed no fusion-related structural changes. The FZ microstructure had a characteristic dendritic solidification pattern, with an average grain size around 20μm.The welded joint exhibited mechanical performance comparable to that of the base materials, with a yield strength of 137 MPa,an ultimate tensile strength of 250 MPa,and an elongation of 5.9%.These properties resulted from precipitated phases within the FZ,strengthening the joint and the coarse-grained structure’s significant work-hardening ability.Digital image correlation(DIC)during tensile testing indicated that strain concentrated within the FZ due to its coarse microstructure. As deformation continued, the AM60 base material experienced plastic deformation, sharing the main strain burden with the FZ.In later stages, microcracks formed specifically at the FZ-AM60 interface. These microcracks coalesced, accelerating crack propagation and resulting in a main crack that caused the joint to fracture. These findings offer valuable insights into controlling failure mechanisms in dissimilar magnesium alloy welds.

文摘Plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)processing of light metals has been established for decades and is in increasing industrial use, even as an alternative surface treatment to produce multifunctional coatings with environmental-friendly processing concept. One of the benefits of PEO processing claimed already a couple of years ago was the ability to treat dissimilar metal joints, which can obviously improve the surface homogeneity and stability at the interface of the dissimilar components, especially impeding the galvanic corrosion due to the different electrochemical properties of each component. However, the progress and breakthrough develop slowly especially for the macro scales due to the much larger gap between each component. This literature review firstly demonstrates the still low number of studies reporting successful PEO treatment of material combination such as Mg/Al,Mg/Ti,Al/Ti and scarcely light metal combinations with steel. The main issues and challenges to performing PEO processing on the macroscale dissimilar weldments were stated. On the other hand, dissimilar metal joints also widely exist in micrometer scale in alloys and metal matrix composites(MMCs).Moreover, there is a huge knowledge base on PEO treatment of such multiphase substrates.PEO processing of such complicated mixed microstructures is reviewed as well to reveal the basic problems. To some certain degree, these PEO-related studies on alloys and MMCs can be good examples to have an insight into the coating formation mechanism on macro-scaled dissimilar metal joints. Conclusions are drawn from the micro-to macroscale. Finally, critical access to the problems is given and possible solutions and reaming limitations are discussed.

文摘For searching alternative strategies to improve reliability of titanium and steel dissimilar bimetallic joints manufactured by directed energy deposition with laser beam(DED-LB),pure titanium was considered as cladding deposited on carbon steel substrate with Ni-based alloy interlayers in this work.Effect of different interlayer modification methods on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of joints was analyzed systematically. The distribution of intermetallic compounds(IMCs)such asβ-Ti,Ti_(2)Ni,TiNiFe_(0.2),Ti_(2)Ni_(3)Si and TiB_(2)in joints was revealed. The results showed that original deposition cracks caused by residual stress during processing could be alleviated by substrate preheating treatment while suppressed by the modified interlayer with Cr completely.Notably, additional Cr could reduce reaction activity between Ti and Ni atoms by raising laser molten pool liquidus, leading to fewer IMCs in joints. As a result, both bonding strength and toughness of joints were remarkably improved. The findings em-phasize more significance of optimizing Ni-based interlayer composition with Cr than preheating method to improve the mechanical performance of DED-LB joints.

文摘In engineering structures, the application of advanced alloys, such as the VCoNi medium-entropy alloy (VCoNi-MEA), with remarkable tensile strength (> 1 GPa) and superior ductility necessitates the employment of dissimilar joints. Thermodynamic parameters elucidating phase stability in the observed FZs and contributions to superior YS were calculated and comprehensively discussed.

文摘The dissimilar friction stir welding of pure copper/1350 aluminum alloy sheet with a thickness of 3 mm was investigated. The fracture surface observation shows that the dissimilar joints fail with a ductile-brittle mixed fracture mode durin~ tensile test.

文摘Dissimilar friction stir welding between 1060 aluminum alloy and annealed pure copper sheet with a thickness of 3 mm was investigated. The high dislocation density and formation of dislocation loops are the major reasons of hardness increase in the WN.

文摘Lap joints of TC1 Ti alloy and LF6 A1 alloy dissimilar materials were fabricated by friction stir welding and corresponding interface characteristics were investigated. The microhardness of the lap joint shows an uneven distribution and the maximum hardness of HV 502 is found in the middle of the stir zone.
文摘The joining of Mg alloy to steel was realized by metal inert-gas arc welding, and the weld thermal cycle characteristics and Mg-steel joints were investigated. It is favorable to select the suitable welding heat input and weld Al content for improving joint strength.

文摘Actuation system is a vital system in an aircraft, providing the force necessary to move flight control surfaces. The results indicate that the proposed reli- ability model of the DRAS, considering the fault and redundancy degradation process and identify monitoring, can express its fault logical relation potential safety hazards.
文摘Microstructure, hardness, tensile and high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties of the welded dissimilar joints of Ti60 and TC17 titanium alloys had been investigated in this study. A significant microstructural change was observed to occur after welding, with rod-like α and β phases in the fusion zone (FZ), equiaxed et phases, fine α laths and β phases in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of TCl7 side and acicular martensite α' phases+"ghost" α phases in the HAZ of Ti60 side, The microhardness across the joints exhibited an inhomogeneous distribution with the highest hardness of ~404 HV in FZ and the lowest hardness of ~304 HV in base material (BM) of Ti60. All the joints tested in tension fractured at BM of Ti60 side. Fatigue limits of the joints at 107 cycles were 425 MPa at room temperature and 380 MPa at 400 ℃, respectively. Welding micropores were found to be the main source of fatigue crack initiation.

文摘The Zn-added ultrasonic assisted friction stir lap welding(UaFSLW) was carried out to improve the quality of dissimilar Al/Mg alloys joint. The effects of ultrasonic power on the joint quality were also investigated. The results indicated that the larger effective lap width and mixing region between Mg and Al(Mg/Al MR) were attained by Zn foil addition and external ultrasonic assistance. Compared with the conventional joint, the finer and better-distributed Mg-Zn IMCs placing the continuous Al-Mg IMCs were formed in the Mg/Al MR of the Zn-added UaFSLW joint. The Zn foil addition and external ultrasonic assistance significantly improved the tensile shear load of the joint, and the load was increased with the increase of the ultrasonic power. The maximum tensile shear load of 7.95 kN was attained, which was 52.6% larger than that of the conventional joint.

文摘The residual stress evolution in a safe-end/nozzle dissimilar metal welded joint of CAP1400 nuclear power plants was investigated in the manufacturing process by finite element simulation. Therefore, such crucial thermal manufacturing process such as cladding, buttering and post-weld heat treatment, besides the multi-pass welding process, should be considered in the numerical model in order to accurately predict the distribution and the magnitude of the residual stress.

文摘In this work, a set of GTN (Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman) parameters of the Alloy52M dissimilar metal welded joint (DMWJ) have been calibrated, and a micromechanical analysis of in-plane constraint effects on the local fracture behavior of two cracks, which located in the weakest regions of the DMWJ, has been investigated by the local approach based on the GTN damage model. The results show that the partition of the material and the variation of the q2 parameter make the J-resistance curves obtained by numerical simulations close to the experimental values. The numerical J-resistance curves and crack growth paths are consistent with the experiment results, which show that the GTN damage model can incorporate the in-plane constraint effect. Furthermore, after the stress, strain and damage fields at the crack tip during the crack propagation process have been calculated, and the change of the J-resistance curves, crack growth paths and fracture mechanism with in-plane constraint have been analyzed.

文摘Joining Mg to Al is challenging because of the deterioration of mechanical properties caused by the formation of intermetallic compounds(IMCs) at the Mg/Al interface. The specimens could fracture along the boundary at the thermo-mechanically affected zone in the Mg side of the welded joint.
