The application o...With the rapid development of higher education, more and more people are entitled doctoral or master’s degrees, resulting in the considerable increase in doctoral dissertations and master’s theses. The application of IT technology renders the possibility to digitize those dissertations, which has contributed a lot to the construction of digital library. The characteristics and corresponding problems like property right, security and sharing will be discussed in this paper. The present study tries to investigate the frequency of metadiscourse makers and moves and the occurrence of metadiscourse in certain moves in“discussion”section in dissertations of applied linguistics.The present s...The present study tries to investigate the frequency of metadiscourse makers and moves and the occurrence of metadiscourse in certain moves in“discussion”section in dissertations of applied linguistics.The present study employs the corpus as the research method,using MAXQDA as research tool to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis.The research finds that the most frequent use of metadiscourse are hedges and transitions,while the lowest is self-mentions,and the central moves are reporting the results and interpreting the results.The research refines the move structure after investigating the corpus.The most frequent occurrence of metadiscourse is hedges in interpreting the results,following the transitions in reporting the results.Self-mentions are the lowest occurrence in any moves.展开更多
This study is a genre analysis carried out on postgraduates＇ theses and dissertations in Iran as an Asian academic setting. The researchers seek to uncover： （1） the generic structure of MA theses, （2） the generi...This study is a genre analysis carried out on postgraduates＇ theses and dissertations in Iran as an Asian academic setting. The researchers seek to uncover： （1） the generic structure of MA theses, （2） the generic structure of Ph.D. dissertations, （3） any probable differences between these two groups. ＂statement of the problem＂ section of 48 MA and Ph.D. dissertations from 2001 to 2008 in Teaching English as a Foreign Language （TEFL） at Mazandaran, Tehran and Allame Tabatabaee universities was selected. For the quantitative method of data analysis, frequency counts, and for the qualitative method, genre analysis was used. Samples were categorized both according to the year they were written and the university they belonged to. The study enjoyed a second rater with inter-rater reliability about 0.93. Results revealed that there was a significant difference in writing ＂statement of the problem＂ in different time periods and different universities in the sense that students in different degrees, time periods, and universities employed quite different generic structures for writing. However, postgraduates in recent years （especially 2005-2008）; regardless of their degree and university, seem to use much more similar generic structures which indicates a general genre awareness.展开更多
A dissertation is a research report or scientific paper written by an author to obtain a certain degree. It reflects postgraduates’ research achievements and the educational quality of an institute, even a country. T...A dissertation is a research report or scientific paper written by an author to obtain a certain degree. It reflects postgraduates’ research achievements and the educational quality of an institute, even a country. To construct an optimized quality evaluation system for postgraduate dissertation (QESPD), we summarized the influencing factors and invited 10 experienced specialists to rate and prioritize them based on fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. Four primary indicators (innovation, integrity, scientificity and normativity) and 16 sub-indicators were selected to form the evaluation system. The order of primary indicators by weight, was innovation (0.4269), scientificity (0.2807), integrity (0.1728) and normativity (0.1196). The top five sub-dimensions were theoretical originality, scientific value, data reliability, design rationality and evidence credibility. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system, a case study was performed. In the case study, it was demonstrated that the established two-index-hierarchy QESPD in this study was a more scientific and reasonable evaluation system worthy of promotion and application.展开更多

Abstract is the essential part of the paper, which helps the readers get initial impressions. Because of its particular the usage of communication, it has its special rules and mode. The purpose of this paper was to present the 5-move model characteristic of research dissertation Abstracts, and explore the linguistic characteristics of each move. The analysis started from the macrostructure, i.e from the text as a whole, towards the microstructure which included linguistic description (syntactic and lexical). The results showed that most abstracts followed 5-move model and the linguistic features of this genre.展开更多
Dissertation is one of the most important indicators to evaluate the training quality of postgraduate students.As the first step of writing dissertations,topic selection directly influences the dissertation quality.By...Dissertation is one of the most important indicators to evaluate the training quality of postgraduate students.As the first step of writing dissertations,topic selection directly influences the dissertation quality.By utilizing the intelligent retrieval system of the National Science and Technology Library(NSTL),we have selected MTCSOL(Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages)dissertation topics during the last 10 years,divided them into four stages and statistically analyzed the general tendency and crucial problems in these dissertations.MTCSOL dissertations have increased greatly in quantity and become more diversified and multidisciplinary.However,they are still too concentrated on similar topics with narrow scopes;and researches lack of creativity,pioneering spirits and practicality.It concludes that MTCSOL students should expand their research scopes and improve the quality of their dissertations with the historic mission of international Chinese language teaching to support the Belt and Road Initiative and build a harmonious community with shared future for humanity in the new era always in their minds.展开更多
