The fly ash from waste incineration poses a serious threat to human health due to its high content of dioxins.Hydrothermal treatment is an efficient and clean method on the decomposition and detoxifying of fly ash.To study the degradation mechanism of dioxins, this paper uses molecular dynamics(MD)to simulate the hydrothermal reaction process of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins(PCDDs)under different conditions, and the degradation mechanism of PCDDs is obtained. The results show that the degradation of PCDDs includes two pathways:the first pathway is the substitution of Cl groups by hydroxyl groups to form low-chlorine substitution products through direct hydrogenation, and the second pathway is the formation of non-toxic benzene ring structures accompanied by the cleavage of C—O bonds. The two degradation pathways of PCDDs well explain the changes in toxicity before and after the hydrothermal treatment of fly ash, which is consistent with experimental results. This study provides theoretical guidance for the harmless treatment process of fly ash via hydrothermal method. 展开更多

A field study and theoretical calculations were performed to clarify the levels, profiles, and distributions of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans(PBDD/Fs) in a cement kiln co-processing solid waste, with a focus on the PBDF formation mechanism. The raw materials contributed greatly to input of PBDD/Fs into the cement kiln. The PBDD/F concentrations in the raw materials were much higher than those in particle samples from different process stages in the cement kiln. The PBDD/F concentrations in the clinkers were1.40% of the concentrations in the raw materials, which indicated that the high destruction efficiencies for PBDD/Fs by cement kiln. PBDD/F distribution patterns in particle samples collected from different process stages indicated the cement kiln backend was a major site for PBDD/F formation. PBDFs with high levels of halogenation, such as heptabrominated furans(Hp BDF), were the dominant contributors to the total PBDD/F concentrations and accounted for 42%–73% of the total PBDD/F concentrations in the particle samples. Our results showed that co-processing of municipal solid waste in a cement kiln may influence the congener profile of PBDD/Fs, especially for the higher halogenated PBDD fraction. In addition, there were significant correlations between the decabromodiphenyl ether and heptabrominated furan concentrations, which is an indicator of transformation from polybrominated diphenyl ethers to PBDD/Fs. Theoretical calculations were performed and demonstrated that elimination of HBr and Br_2 from polybrominated diphenyl ethers were the dominant formation pathways for PBDD/Fs. These pathways differed from that for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans(PCDD/Fs). 展开更多

The emission of dioxins from municipal solid waste incinerators(MSWIs) has become a widespread concern. The effect of meteorological parameters(wind speed, atmospheric stability and mixing height) on the hourly ground level concentration(GLC) of dioxins was estimated using air dispersion models. Moreover, the health risks of dioxin exposure were evaluated for children and adults using the Nouwen equation. The total environmental exposure via air inhalation and food ingestion was calculated, based on linear fit equations. The results indicate that potentially severe pollution from dioxins occurs at a wind speed of 1.5 m/s with atmospheric stability class F.In addition, local residents in the study area are exposed to severe weather conditions most of the time, and the risk exposures for children are far higher than those for adults. The total exposure for children far exceeds the tolerable daily intake of dioxin recommended by the World Health Organization(WHO) of 1-4 pg TEQ/(kg·d) under severe weather conditions. Results from modeling calculations of health risk assessment were consistent with dioxin levels obtained during actual monitoring of emissions. 展开更多

Dioxins, which are of the most toxic materials on the earth, are principal emitted from waste incineration process. The molecular structures, toxicity parameters, such as toxicity equivalency factor, tolerable daily intake and physic-chemical properties of dioxins are briefly summarized. Three formation mechanisms of dioxins in waste incineration process, namely as de novo synthesis, mechanisms involving small organic molecular as precursors and homogenous gas phase reaction mechanism are alto reviewed. The influencing factors for dioxins formation during waste incineration process are also discussed. Three major methods for reducing dioxins emission from waste incineration process are discussed based upon the formation mechanisms and influencing factors. A new waste incineration process with low dioxins emission and low hydrogen chloride corrosion has been proposed based on multi- stage unit operation principal according to formation mechanisms of dioxins and potential production location in waste incinerators. 展开更多

The ambient air in vicinity of different industrial sources for PCDD/PCDFs was sampled by TSP/PM10 active samplers and passive PUF disk samplers in Tangshan City, a metropolis containing clusters of various industrial plants. The TEQ concentrations of PCDD/PCDFs ranged from 44.2 to 394.1 fg I-TEQ/m^3 with an average of 169.9 fg I-TEQ]m^3. 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF was the dominant contributor to ∑TEQ, contributing 41% (12% to 55%), while 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDE OCDD and OCDF were the major congeners for the total concentrations. The ratios of ∑PCDF/∑PCDD reached 2.54 on average, suggesting that de novo synthesis in thermal processes played an important role to the airborne pollution of PCDD/PCDFs. The similarities congener profiles indicated that TSP and PM10 active sampling methods are comparable for the determination of the PCDD/PCDFs in ambient air, and the ratios of concentrations determined by the two methods suggested that the PCDD/PCDFs tended to stay in fine particles. It was found that 2,3,7,8-TCDF and OCDD were the dominating congeners in the passive PUF disks samples. Through principal components analysis, the coke industry was suggested to be a relatively high potential emission source for PCDD/PCDFs in the ambient air of Tangshan, which was possibly formed by de novo synthesis mechanism. In this study, the atmospheric impacts to the environment from different industrial sources could be ranked as follows (from high to low): coking, iron sintering, steel making, power generation and chlorinate alkali chemical production industries. 展开更多

With the addition of urea as an inhibitor, four groups of reducing dioxin emission experiments in sintering pot were conducted. The results show that, adding 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.5% (mass fraction) urea, the emission concentrations of dioxin are 0.287 0.258 and 0.217 ng-TEQ/m3, respectively. The dioxin emission rates drop substantially compared to 0.777 ng-TEQ/m3 flee of urea. With an increase of the urea content, the concentration of SO2 emission reduces sharply. (NH4)2SO4, formed by the reaction of SO2 and NH3, goes into the dust and part of NH3 is released before reaction with the emission of exhaust gas. The NO~ emission presents an increasing trend because the reaction of NH3 and 02 at high temperature produces NOx. Based on the consideration of factors such as the effect of reducing dioxin emission, and the chemical composition of exhaust gas, 0.05% is the optimum adding content of urea. 展开更多

The emission of dioxins from the iron ore sintering process is the largest emission source of dioxins, and the reduction in dioxin emission from the iron ore sintering process to the environment is increasingly important. Three approaches to control the emission of dioxins were reviewed: source control, process control, and terminal control. Among them, two terminal control technologies, activated carbon adsorption and selective reduction technology, were discussed in detail. Following a comparison of the reduction technologies, the terminal control method was indicated as the key technology to achieve good control of dioxins during the sintering process. For the technical characteristics of the sintering process and flue gas, multiple methods should be collectively considered, and the most suitable method may be addition of inhibitors + ultra-clean dust collection (electrostatic precipitation/bag filter) + desulphurization + selective catalytic reduction to sufficiently remove multiple pollutants, which provides a direction for the cooperative disposal of flue gas pollutants in future. 展开更多

Objective The compound 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin(TCDD), a persistent organic pollutant, is harmful to the nervous system, but its effects on the brain are still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of TCDD on astrocytes proliferation and underlying molecular mechanism. Methods The cell proliferation was measured by EdU-based proliferation assay and PI staining by flow cytometry. Protein expression levels were detected by Western blotting. Immunofluorescence, cytoplasmic and nuclear fractions separation were used to assess the distribution of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3). Results C6 cells treated with 10 and 50 nmol/L TCDD for 24 h showed significant promotion of the proliferation of. The exposure to TCDD resulted in the upregulation in the expression levels of phosphorylated protein kinase B(p-Akt), phosphorylated STAT3, and cyclin D1 in a dose-and time-dependent manner. The inhibition of Akt expression with LY294002 or STAT3 expression with AG490 abolished the TCDD-induced cyclin D1 upregulation and cell proliferation. Furthermore, LY294002 suppressed the activation of STAT3. Finally, TCDD promoted the translocation of STAT3 from the cytoplasm to the nucleus, and LY294002 treatment blocked this effect. Conclusion TCDD exposure promotes the proliferation of astrocyte cells via the Akt/STAT3/cyclin D1 pathway, leading to astrogliosis. 展开更多

Tissue distribution provides important information regarding the pharmacokinetic behavior of pollutants and is invaluable when analyzing the risk posed to avian species by the exposure to such kind of pollutants. In this study, concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were determined in muscle, liver, spleen, kidney, stomach, gall bladder, skin, heart, pancreas, intestine and lung tissue extracts of cormorants collected from Dongting Lake, China. Tissue distribution results showed preferential accumulation of PCDD/Fs in both liver and skin. The total concentration of PCDD/Fs ranged from 421 to 5696 pg/g lipid weight. Octachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) was the predominant congener in all tissues and contributed between 31% and 82% to all 17 PCDD/Fs in different tissues. The liver/muscle ratios progressively increased with the degree of chlorination of PCDDs, except for OCDD. The relative toxic potential of PCDDs and PCDFs in tissues were calculated using the World Health Organization (WHO) Toxic Equivalency Factors (TEFs) for birds. The concentrations of WHO-toxic equivalent in different tissues ranged between 14.8 and 2021 pg/g lipid weight. These results indicated PCDD/Fs may have been bio-accumulated in cormorant via food-web. Furthermore, when compared with studies reported in the literatures, the PCDD/Fs levels in the cormorant collected from Dongting Lake were still relatively high. 展开更多

The soils, tropical climate, and network of canals and rivers of southern Vietnam have created one of the most diverse tropical jungles and intensely cultivated landscapes of Southeast Asia. This paradise has a long history of numerous wars, foreign occupations, and most recently the Second Indochina War (aka the Vietnam War 1965-1972) which defoliated rain forests and ancient wetland mangroves and left behind contaminated soil and sediment hotspots. During this war, the United States (US) military sprayed 80 million liters of Agent Orange contaminated with the dioxin TCDD in a guerrilla war against communist insurgents. Agent Orange was a synthetic plant growth regulator comprised of equal amounts of two herbicides 2,4-dichloro phenoxyacetic acid C8H6Cl2O3 (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid C8H5Cl3O3 (2,4,5-T). TCDD, the dioxin, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (C12H4Cl4O2) was an unintended byproduct of the accelerated combustion process used in the manufacture of herbicides containing 2,4,5-T. Agent Orange has frequently been blamed for soil and sediment contamination and long-term human health problems;however, the true source of harm is the dioxin TCDD. Agent Orange has a short half-life of days and weeks after application to vegetation, and has not been found to persist, after 50 years, in the water or soils of southern Vietnam. However, the half-life of dioxin TCDD depends on where it is deposited and varies from 1 to 3 years on soil surfaces that have been fully exposed to sunlight, to as long as 20 to 50 years or more when buried in tropical subsoils, and more than 100 years in river and sea sediments. Dioxin TCDD was heavily concentrated in the US Air Force bases in Vietnam where the herbicides were stored, loaded on planes and helicopters for aerial spraying, and used extensively around military base perimeter fences as a security measure to prevent surprise attacks. Bien Hoa Air Force base, 40 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, continues to be one of the mega-hotspots where after 48 years the dioxin TCDD levels in fish and shrimp are still high and fishing is banned in ponds and lakes adjacent to the airbase. Although expensive, one of the most effective remediation to dioxin TCDD contaminated soils is incineration which is the recommended method of dioxin TCDD disposal. 展开更多

Dioxin production is a worldwide concern because of its persistence and carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects. The pyrolysis-chemical looping combustion process of disposing solid waste is an alternative to traditional solid waste incineration developed to reduce the dioxin production. Based on the equilibrium composition of the Deacon reaction, pyrolysis gas oxidized by seven common oxygen carriers, namely, Cu O, Ni O, Ca SO4, Co O,Fe2O3, Mn3O4, and Fe Ti O3, is studied and compared with the pyrolysis gas directly combusted by air. The result shows that the activity of the Deacon reaction for oxygen carriers is lower than that for air. For four typical oxygen carriers(Cu O, Ni O, Fe2O3, and Fe Ti O3), the influences of temperature, pressure, gas composition, and tar on the Deacon reaction are discussed in detail. According to these simulation results, the dioxin production in China, Europe, the United States, and Japan is predicted for solid waste disposal by the pyrolysis-chemical looping combustion process. Thermodynamic analysis results in this paper show that chemical looping combustion can reduce dioxin production in the disposal of solid waste. 展开更多

Objective To improve the chemically-activated luciferase expression (CALUX)bioassay for detection of dioxin-like chemicals (DLCs) based on the toxicity mechanisms ofDLCs. Method A recombinant vector was constructed and used to transfect humanhepatoma (HepG2). The expression of this vector was 10-100 folds higher than that of pGL2used in previous experiments. The transfected cells showed aromatic hydrocarbon receptor(AhR)-meditated luciferase gene expression. The reliability of luciferase induction in thiscell line as a reporter of AhR-mediated toxicity was evaluated, the optimal detection timewas examined and a comparison was made by using the commonly used ethoxyresoufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity induction assay. Result The results suggested that theluciferase activity in recombinant cells was peaked at about 4 h and then decreased to astable activity by 14 h after TCDD treatment. The detection limit of this cell line was0.11pmol/L, or 10-fold lower than in previous studies, with a linear range from 1 to 100pmol/L, related coefficient of 0.997, and the coefficient of variability (CV) of 15-30%.Conclusion The luciferase induction is 30-fold more sensitive than EROD induction, thedetection time is 68 h shorter and the detection procedure is also simpler. 展开更多

Dioxin is a highly toxic and caustic substance, which widely existed in the atmosphere, soil and water with tiny particles.Dioxin pollution has become a major problem that concerns the survival of mankind, which must be strictly controlled. The bond length, bond angle, energy, dipole moment, orbital energy level distribution of dioxin under the external field are investigated using DFT(density functional theory)on basis set level of B3LYP/6-31G(d,p).The results indicate that with the increase of the electric field, the length of one Carbon-Oxygen bond increases while another Carbon-Oxygen bond decreases. The energy gradually decreases with the electric field, while the change of the dipole moment has an opposite trend. In the infrared spectra, the vibration frequency decreases with the electric field increasing and shows an obvious red shift. Moreover, the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra under different electric fields are analyzed with TD-DFT(time-dependent density functional theory)method. The wavelength of the strongest absorption peak increases and occurs red shift with the increase of the electric field. All the above results can provide reference for further research on the properties of dioxin under different external electric field. 展开更多

Bulk(wet and dry) deposition samples were collected in Saitama Prefecture, Japan throughout a year(February 8, 2012 to February 7, 2013) to estimate the influence of dioxins emitting from waste incinerators on river water quality. The annual deposition flux of dioxins was 3.3 ng-toxic equivalent(TEQ)/m^2/year. Source identification using indicative congeners estimated that 82% of dioxin TEQ in the bulk deposition(2.7 ng-TEQ/m^2/year)was combustion-originated, indicating that most of the dioxins in the deposition were derived from waste incinerators. In Saitama prefecture the annual flux of combustionoriginated dioxins in depositions was apparently consistent with that of dioxin emission into the air from waste incinerators. The TEQ of combustion-originated dioxins in the deposition per rainfall was 2.4 pg-TEQ/L on annual average, exceeding the environmental quality standard(EQS) for water in Japan of 1 pg-TEQ/L. This suggests there is a possibility that dioxins in atmospheric deposition have a significant influence on the water quality of urban rivers which rainwater directly flows into because of many paved areas in the basins. The influence of combustion-originated dioxin in the deposition on the water quality of Ayase River, an urban river heavily polluted with dioxins, was estimated at 0.29 pg-TEQ/L on annual average in 2015. It seems that dioxins in atmospheric deposition from waste incinerators have a significant influence on water quality of some urban rivers via rainwater though the dioxins in the ambient air have achieved the EQS for atmosphere at all monitoring sites in Japan. 展开更多

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins(PCDDs) are a group of important persistent organic pollutants. They are highly toxic and persistent in environment. In the present study, geometrical optimization and electrostatic potential calculations have been performed for 75 PCDD congeners and dibenzo-p-dioxin(DD) at the HF/6-31G* level of theory.A number of statistically based parameters have been extracted.Linear relationships between vapor pressures(logpL),aqueous solubilities(logSw),n-octanol/water partition coefficients(logKow) of PCDDs and structural descriptors have been established by stepwise linear regression analysis. The result shows that the quantities derived from the surface electrostatic potentials Vmin,Π,and Vs,av+,together with Vmc(the molecular volume) and ELUMO(the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) can be well used to express the quantitative structure-property relationships of PCDDs.Predictive capabilities of the models have also been demonstrated by leave-one-out cross-validation with the cross-validated correlation coefficient(Rcv) above 0.97.Based on these QSPR models, the predicted values have been presented for those PCDD congeners whose experimentally determined physicochemical properties are unavailable. 展开更多

Emerging evidence showed that 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin(TCDD) could induce expression of certain reactivation-associated genes in astrocytes, however, the consequent cellular effects and molecular mechanisms are still unclear. During the process of astrocyte reactivation, migration is a critical cellular event. In the present study, we employed woundhealing assay and Transwell? motility assay to explore the effects of TCDD on cell migration in primary cultured rat cortical astrocytes. We found that upon TCDD treatments at relative low concentrations(10^(-10) and/or 10^(-9) mol/L), the ability of primary astrocytes to migrate horizontally and vertically was promoted. In line with this cellular effect, the mR NA expression of two promigratory genes, including cell division cycle 42(CDC42) and matrix metalloproteinase 2(MMP2)was induced by TCDD treatment. Dioxin exerts its toxic effects mainly through aryl hydrocarbon receptor(AhR) pathway. So the role of AhR pathway in the pro-migratory effects of TCDD was examined using an AhR antagonist, CH223191. We found that application of CH223191 significantly reversed the pro-migratory effects of TCDD. Interestingly, the basal ability of horizontal migration as well as basal levels of CDC42 and MMP2 expression were dramatically reduced suggesting a possible physiological role of AhR in maintaining the endogenous migration ability of the primary astrocytes. These findings support the notion that dioxin promotes astrocyte reactivation at molecular and cellular levels. 展开更多

We report a series of highly stable metallophthalocyanine-based covalent organic frameworks(MPc-dxCOFs) linked by robust 1,4-dioxin bonds constructed through nucleophilic aromatic substitution(SNAr)reaction. The chemical structures and crystallinity of the COFs largely remain unchanged even after treating with boiling water(90°C), concentrated acids(12 mol/L HCl) or bases(12 mol/L Na OH), oxidizing(30% H_(2)O_(2)) or reducing agents(1 mol/L NaBH;) for three days due to their stable M-Pc building blocks and resilient dioxin linkers. With metallated phthalocyanine active sites regularly arranged in the stable framework structures, MPc-dx-COFs can be directly used as efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) without pyrolysis treatment that has commonly been used in previous studies. 展开更多

Food, especially animal origin food is the main source of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans(PCDD/Fs),and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls(dl-PCBs)for human exposure. So,a simple, rapid and cheap bioassay method is needed for determination of dioxins in food samples. In this study,we used a new highly sensitive reporter cell line to determine the concentration of dioxins in 33 fish and seafood samples. The samples were extracted by shaking with water/isopropanol(1:1 v/v)and hexane and cleaned-up by a multi layered silica gel column and an alumina column, then analyzed using CBG 2.8 D cell line.We compared the results obtained from the CBG 2.8 D cell assay to those obtained from conventional High-Resolution Gas Chromatography-High Resolution Mass Spectrometry(HRGC-HRMS)analysis.Good correlations were observed between these two methods(r^2=0.93).While the slope of regression line was 1.76,the bioanalytical equivalent(BEQ)values were 1.76 folds higher than WHO-TEQ values and the conversion coefficient was 0.568(the reciprocal of 1.76).In conclusion,CBG 2.8 D cell assay was an applicable method to determine dioxins levels in fish and sea food samples. 展开更多
