The dimpling defects caused by conventional hemispherical punch in doubly curved sheet metal reconfigurable die forming process were considered.The rotatable cubic punch (RCP) was developed to suppress the dimpling defects more effectively and conveniently.The former punch contacts with the work-piece through a point-surface contact and the latter punch contacts with the work-piece through a surface-surface contact.A series of stamping experiments were carried out using three different punches (hemispherical punch,RCP,chamfered-RCP) with three different loads.Some finite element simulations about the stamping experiments were carried out.The dimple scales were evaluated through the dimple depths.The corresponding data were obtained by 3-D scanning and FE result analysis respectively.A 3-D plate forming machine was developed,in which chamfered-RCP was adopted.Plate forming experiments were carried out on this machine.The stamped samples show a clear basis for the performance of chamfered-RCP.The study provided a means to guide the design of punches for dimpling suppression used in reconfigurable die. 展开更多

Enhancing Hydrothermal Performance of Dimpled Tubes:Investigating the Impact of Different Dimple Sizes and Distribution along the Tube

The main purpose of this research is to optimize the hydrothermal performance of a dimpled tube by augmenting the surface area for heat transmission and thermal layer cracking.To achieve that,the impact of different dimple diameters and their distribution along the dimpled tube was investigated numerically using the ANSYS Fluent 2022 R1 software by considering two models,A and B.Both models consist of three regions;the first,second,and third have dimple diameters of 3,2,&1 mm,respectively.Model A included an in-line dimple arrangement,while model B involved a staggered dimple arrangement.The finite volume method(FVM)was used in the modeling techniques to address the turbulent flow problem,which ranged in this investigation from Re of 3000 to 8000.The cooling fluid used in this investigation is water,which concentrated primarily on single-phase flow conditions.The investigation results revealed that as the Re increased,all analyzed models showcased higher.A reduction in pressure drops,thermal resistance,Nu,and overall performance standards.Crucially,compared to the traditionalmodel,both suggested models demonstrated improved heat transmission capacities.Within all the models examined,the tube with dimples in(model B)as staggered showed the greatest enhancement in the Nu,which was almost double that of the conventional type.Model A and Model B have respective average total performance criteria of 1.23 and 1.34. 展开更多

We report a detailed study of magnetically levitated loading of ultracold ^(133)Cs atoms in a dimple trap.The atomic sample was produced in a combined red-detuned optical dipole trap and dimple trap formed by two small waist beams crossing a horizontal plane.The magnetic levitation for the ^(133)Cs atoms forms an effective potential for a large number of atoms in a high spatial density.Dependence of the number of atoms loaded and trapped in the dimple trap on the magnetic field gradient and bias field is in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.This method has been widely used to obtain the Bose–Einstein condensation atoms for many atomic species. 展开更多

In order to increase the efficiency of solar air collectors,a new variant with a protrusion is proposed in this study,and its performances are analyzed from two points of view,namely,in terms of optics and thermodynamics aspects.By comparing and analyzing the light paths of the protrusion and the dimple,it can be concluded that when sunlight shines on the dimple,it is reflected and absorbed multiple times,whereas for the sunlight shining on the protrusion,there is no secondary reflection or absorption of light.When the lighting area and the properties of the surfaces are the same,the absorption rate of the dimple is 10.3 percentage points higher than that of the protrusion.In the range of Reynolds number from 3000 to 11000,numerical simulations about the effects of the relative height(e/Dh=0.033–0.1)and relative spacing(p/e=4.5–8.5)of protrusions on air heat transfer and flow resistance show that,in terms of comprehensive evaluation coefficient(PF),the best relative height is 0.085,when the relative spacing is 5.A correlation of Nu and f with Re,e/Dh and p/e is obtained by linear regression of the results,in order to provide a useful reference for the design and optimization of this kind of solar air collector. 展开更多

This research comprehensively investigates the flow and thermal characteristics of a pulsating impinging jet over a dimpled surface.It analyzes the impact of key parameters(e.g.,inlet velocity pulsation functions,pulsation frequency,amplitude,dimple pitch,dimple depth,Reynolds number)on flow patterns and heat transfer.Validated computational fluid dynamics and the Re-normalization group turbulence model are employed to accurately simulate complex turbulent flow behavior.Local and average heat transfer coefficients are calculated and compared to steady impingement cases,revealing the potential benefits of pulsation for heat transfer enhancement.The study also examines how pulsation-induced flow modulation and thermal mixing affect heat transfer mechanisms.Results indicate that combining fluctuating flow with a dimpled surface can improve heat transfer rates.In summary,increasing pulsation amplitude consistently enhances heat transfer,while the effect of frequency varies between impinging and wall jet zones. 展开更多

In this study,the primary objective was to enhance the hydrothermal performance of a dimpled tube by addressing areas with low heat transfer compared to other regions.To accomplish this,a comprehensive numerical investigation was conducted using ANSYS Fluent 2022 R1 software,focusing on different diameters of dimples along the pipe’s length and the distribution of dimples in both in-line and staggered arrangements.The simulations utilized the finite elementmethod to address turbulent flowwithin the tube by solving partial differential equations,encompassing Re numbers spanning from 3000 to 8000.The study specifically examined single-phase flow conditions,with water utilized as the cooling fluid.The results of the investigation indicated that increasing the Reynolds number resulted in higher average Nusselt numbers,pressure drops,the overall performance criterion,and a reduction in average thermal resistance across all models analyzed.Notably,both proposedmodels demonstrated improved heat transfer when compared to the conventional model.Out of all the models evaluated,the tube featuring staggered dimples(Model B)demonstrated the most notable improvement in the Nu number.It exhibited an enhancement of approximately twice the value compared to the conventional model.The mean thermal resistance for the tube with dimples in the staggered arrangement(Model B)is 0.0057 k/W,compared to 0.0118 k/W for the traditional model.The maximum overall performance criterion for Model-A-and Model-Bis 1.22 and 1.33,respectively. 展开更多

Titanium with gradient nano-to-micron scale grains from surface to matrix was fabricated by surface mechanical grinding treatment(SMGT) at room temperature.The SMGT-treated titanium shows higher strength than that of as-received one,but moderate ductility between those of ultra-fine grained(UFG) and coarse-grained titanium.Tensile stress-strain curves of SMGT-treated titanium show double strain hardening regimes.The strain hardening rate(dσ/dε) decreases with increasing strain in tensile deformation.The high strain hardening rate at initial yielding is attributed to nano-to-micron-grained surface layer.The low strain hardening rate at large plastic strain regime primarily results from coarse-grained matrix.The SMGT-treated titanium shows a ductile fracture mode with a large number of dimples.The small size of dimples in the treated surface layer is due to the combination of the high strength and strain hardening exponent.The difference between dimple size in nano-to-micron-grained surface layer and coarse-grained matrix is discussed in terms of plastic zone size at the tip of crack in the SMGT-treated titanium. 展开更多

Inspired by sand dunes, a novel v... The use of bionic non-smooth surfaces is a popular approach for saving energy because of their drag reduction property. Conventional non-smooth structures include riblets and dimples. Inspired by sand dunes, a novel variable ovoid non-smooth structure is proposed in this study. The body of the variable ovoid dimple was designed based on three size parameters, the radius, semimajor, and depth, and a 3D model was created based on UG software. The constructed variable dimples were placed in a rectangular array on the bottom of a square tube model. Following ANSYS meshing, the grid model was imported into FLUENT, where the flow characteristics were calculated. Results of skin friction reduction were achieved and the effect of the design parameters on different variable ovoid dimples was obtained by orthogonal testing. Various aspects of the skin friction reduction mechanism were discussed including the distribution of velocity vectors, variation in boundary layer thickness, and pressure distribution. 展开更多

To solve the problem of sealing between the barrel and the rubber ring of shell body during an launching process of aerodynamic extinguishing cannon, a rubber sealing model with bionic dimpled characteristics was established based on the theory of bionic dimpled drag reduction and the principle of rubber sealing. In condition that the bionic dimpled characteristic diameters were 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm, respectively, by numerical simulation, the influence of the installing compression of the rubber sealing ring on its surface stress and deformation was analyzed, and sealing performance of the rubber ring with different diameters of bionic dimpled was studied. The results show that the deformation of rubber ring appears prominent nonlinear characteristics when compression is increased from 1.5 mm to 2.5 ram. When the compression is 2.5 mm, the equivalent compression stress on the sealing areas of both sides of the rubber seal is greater than the working pressure of aerodynamic extinguishing cannon, which could meet the sealing requirement and would not cause leakage. So the rubber sealing ring with bionic dimpled surface possesses a good sealing characteristic and has no negative effect on the sealing of shell body; When the compression is 2.5 mm, the larger equivalent stress on the edge of sealing ring and the more even stress distribution in the high pressure area are generated due to the smaller compressive stress on the bionic dimple areas, which lays a foundation for the drag reduction characteristics of the shell body's rubber ring with bionic dimpled surface. 展开更多

Heat transfer enhancement in vertical tubes plays an important role on the thermal performance of many heat exchangers and thermal devices.In this work,laminar mixed convection of airflow in a vertical dimpled tube was numerically investigated.Three-dimensional elliptical governing equations were solved using the finite-volume technique.For a given dimpled pitch,the effects of three different dimple heights(h/D=0.013,0.027,0.037) have been studied at different Richardson numbers(0.1,1.0 and 1.5).The generated vortex in the vicinity of the dimple destructs the thermal boundary layer and enhances the heat transfer.Therefore,lower wall temperature is seen where the dimples are located.Fluid flow velocity at the near-wall region significantly increases because of buoyancy forces with the increase of Richardson numbers.Such an acceleration at the near-wall region makes the dimples more effective at higher Richardson number.Using a dimpled tube enhances the heat transfer coefficient.However,the pressure drop is not important.For instance,in the case of Ri=1.5 and h/D=0.037,20% gains in the heat transfer enhancement only costs2.5% in the pressure loss.In general,it is recommended using a dimpled tube where the effects of buoyancy forces are important. 展开更多

This study aims to discover the stress-state dependence of the dynamic strain aging(DSA)effect on the deformation and fracture behavior of high-strength dual-phase(DP)steel at different deformation temperatures(25-400°C)and reveal the damage mechanisms under these various configurations.To achieve different stress states,predesigned specimens with different geometric features were used.Scanning electron microscopy was applied to analyze the fracture modes(e.g.,dimple or shear mode)and underlying damage mechanism of the investigated material.DSA is present in this DP steel,showing the Portevin-Le Chatelier(PLC)effect with serrated flow behavior,thermal hardening,and blue brittleness phenomena.Results show that the stress state contributes distinctly to the DSA effect in terms of the magnitude of thermal hardening and the pattern of blue brittleness.Either low stress triaxiality or Lode angle parameter promotes DSA-induced blue brittleness.Accordingly,the damage mechanisms also show dependence on the stress states in conjunction with the DSA effect. 展开更多

The fracture morphologies of several advanced high-strength steels (DP590, DP780, DP980, Ml180, and M1300) formed in uniaxial tension and piercing were observed by scanning electron microscope, and then quantitatively analyzed by image processing technique. The tension-induced fractographs are dominated by obvious uniform or bimodal size dimples, while shearing-induced fractographs have smooth surfaces and few dimples. The fracture zone of higher grade DP steels is smoother. As for M1180 and M1300, the fracture zones consist of very small dimples and smooth brittle surfaces. The dimple size of M1300( ,- 1.2 tm) is smaller than that of M1180( 1.6 tm). Moreover, in the tensile fracture, the quantitative correlation between average dimple diameter (d) and tensile strength (a) can be represented by d = 10,502.32a-121. However, the relation between dimple density and tensile strength is not monotonic due to the appearance of bimodal size dimples with increase of tensile strength. For shearing-induced fracture during piercing, the fitted empirical model between the percentage of burnish zone (f) and tensile strength can be described asf --- 239.9a-'36. 展开更多

The microstructure characteristics and plastic deformation behavior of SUS304 metastable austenitic stainless steel sheets have been investigated during tensile process at different strain rates at room temperature. The yield stress continuously increases with strain rates due to low fraction of martensite transformed from austenite at 0.2% plastic stain. While the ultimate tensile stress (UTS) and elongation gradually decreases and then slightly increases with increase in strain rate from 0.0005 s-1 to 0.i s-1, which is attributed to the variation of the martensite fraction that is affected seriously by adiabatic heating. A higher temperature increase in the tensile specimens restricts the martensitic transformation at high strain rate. The strain rate of 0.1 s-1 is considered as a transition deformation rate from quasi-static state to plastic forming, where the transformed martensitic content is very small in a higher strain rate range. Anomalous stress peaks in the later half stage of deformation occur at a very low strain rate (i.e., 0.0005 s-1) result from X-shaped strain localization repeatedly sweeping over the specimen. With increasing strain rates, the variation of dimple number density follows similar trend as that of UTS and ductility because martensite fraction mostly influences void nucleation and growth. 展开更多

Oil leakage between the slipper and swash plate of an axial piston pump has a significant effect on the efficiency of the pump.Therefore,it is extremely important that any leakage can be predicted.This study investigates the leakage,oil film thickness,and pocket pressure values of a slipper with circular dimples under different working conditions.The results reveal that flat slippers suffer less leakage than those with textured surfaces.Also,a deep learning-based framework is proposed for modeling the slipper behavior.This framework is a long short-term memory-based deep neural network,which has been extremely successful in predicting time series.The model is compared with four conventional machine learning methods.In addition,statistical analyses and comparisons confirm the superiority of the proposed model. 展开更多

The radial ultrasonic rolling electrochemical micromachining(RUR-EMM)combined rolling electrochemical micromachining(R-EMM)and ultrasonic vibration was studied in this paper.The fundamental understanding of the machining process especially the interaction between multiphysics in the interelectrode gap(IEG)was investigated and discussed by the finite element method.The multiphysics coupling model including flow field model,Joule heating model,material dissolution model and vibration model was built.3D multiphysics simulation based on micro dimples process in RUR-EMM and R-EMM was proposed.Simulation results showed that the electrolyte flowed into and out IEG periodically,gas bubbles were easy to squeeze out and the gas void fraction deceased about 16%to 54%,the maximum current density increased by 1.36 times in RUR-EMM than in R-EMM in one vibration period of time.And application of the ultrasonic vibration increased the electrolyte temperature about 1.3–4.4%in IEG.Verification experiments of the micro dimple process denoted better corrosion consistency of array dimples in RUR-EMM,there was no island at the micro dimple bottom which always formed in R-EMM,and an aggregated deviation of less than 8.7%for the micro dimple depth and 4%for the material removal amount between theory and experiment was obtained. 展开更多

In this numerical study,natural flow and heat transfer of nanofluids with Al2O3,TiO2,Cu and CNT nanoparticles in a vertical channel with dimpled fins at Rayleigh number(Ra)of Ra=3.25×107 to Ra=1×108 are investigated by using the finite volume method.The obtained results revealed that,using CNT in volume fractions of 2%and 4%leads to significant heat transfer and atφ=6%,using TiO2 nanoparticles has a great effect on Nu number enhancement.Also,using solid nanoparticles in base fluid causes more uniform heat transfer distribution,especially in areas close to heated surface and by adding more volume fraction in base fluid,temperature level reduces.In general,according to temperature contours,reduction of wall temperature depends on the increase of Ra and volume fraction and the type of solid nanoparticles. 展开更多

Numerical simulation on the flow fields near the dimpled and the smooth revolution bodies are performed and compared by using SST k-ω turbulence model, to explain the reasons of friction and base drag reductions on the bionic dimpled surface and the control behaviors of dimpled surface to boundary layer near wall of the revolution body. The simulation results show that the dimpled surface reduces the skin friction drag through reducing the velocity gradient and turbulent intensity, and reduces the base drag through weakening the pumping action on the flow behind the revolution body caused by the external flow; the low speed rotating vortexes in the dimples segregate the external flow and the revolution body; and the low speed rotating vortexes forming in the bottom of dimples can produce negative skin friction. 展开更多
