Pharmaceutical-Food Homologous Plant-Derived Carbon Dots : A Sustainable Nanoplatform for Integrated Detection and Remediation of Environmental Pollutants

Pharmaceutical-Food Homologous Plant-Derived Carbon Dots (P-CDs) have emerged as revolutionary nanomaterials in environmental pollutant management, demonstrating transformative potential for green chemistry and sustainable material applications. These carbon dots establish an innovative technical framework by integrating dual "detection-remediation" functionalities through eco-friendly synthesis and high-value conversion of medicinal-edible plants and agroforestry waste. Their core advantages originate from structural templating effects induced by natural functional groups (polyphenols, amino acids) in plant precursors combined with heteroatom self-doping, which synergistically optimizes optical properties. This combination achieves quantum yields ranging from 3.06% to 84.9% and detection sensitivities spanning nanomolar to micromolar concentrations. In pollutant detection applications, P-CDs enable ultrasensitive identification of heavy metals (Hg^(2+) , Cu^(2+) , Fe^(3+) ) and organic contaminants (pesticides, antibiotics) through multi-mechanistic interactions including static quenching (SQ), dynamic quenching (DQ), and F rster resonance energy transfer (FRET). However, technological translation faces critical challenges including quantum yield heterogeneity (>40-fold variation), matrix interference in complex environmental samples (signal drift exceeding 12%), and scalability-related process inconsistencies. Future research priorities should focus on three key areas: standardization of synthesis protocols, development of surface passivation strategies ( e.g. , SiO_(2) encapsulation), and optimization of heterojunction designs to enhance interference resistance. The integration of in situ characterization techniques (particularly X-ray absorption spectroscopy) with machine learning-driven parameter optimization could significantly refine detection-remediation synergies. Concurrently, establishing a comprehensive lifecycle assessment framework becomes imperative for evaluating environmental impacts and scalability potential. This technology pioneers a sustainable paradigm for pollution control by bridging the gap between nanomaterial innovation and industrial deployment, thereby accelerating progress toward global ecological security objectives. 展开更多

Detection of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria has largely been dependent on targeted gene sequencing technology or traditional cell cultivation, which usually takes from days to months to carry out. This clearly does not meet the requirements of analysis for time-sensitive samples and/or complicated environmental samples. Since energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry(EDS) can be used to simultaneously detect multiple elements in a sample, including sulfur, with minimal sample treatment, this technology was applied to detect sulfur-oxidizing bacteria using their high sulfur content within the cell. This article describes the application of scanning electron microscopy imaging coupled with EDS mapping for quick detection of sulfur oxidizers in contaminated environmental water samples, with minimal sample handling. Scanning electron microscopy imaging revealed the existence of dense granules within the bacterial cells, while EDS identified large amounts of sulfur within them. EDS mapping localized the sulfur to these granules. Subsequent 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that the bacteria detected in our samples belonged to the genus Chromatium, which are sulfur oxidizers. Thus, EDS mapping made it possible to identify sulfur oxidizers in environmental samples based on localized sulfur within their cells, within a short time(within 24 h of sampling). This technique has wide ranging applications for detection of sulfur bacteria in environmental water samples. 展开更多

When a fire breaks out in a high-rise building,the occlusion of smoke and obstacles results in dearth of crucial information concerning people in distress,thereby creating a challenge in their detection.Given the restricted sensing range of a single unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)cam-era,enhancing the target recognition rate becomes challenging without target information.To tackle this issue,this paper proposes a multi-agent autonomous collaborative detection method for multi-targets in complex fire environments.The objective is to achieve the fusion of multi-angle visual information,effectively increasing the target’s information dimension,and ultimately address-ing the problem of low target recognition rate caused by the lack of target information.The method steps are as follows:first,the you only look once version5(YOLOv5)is used to detect the target in the image;second,the detected targets are tracked to monitor their movements and trajectories;third,the person re-identification(ReID)model is employed to extract the appearance features of targets;finally,by fusing the visual information from multi-angle cameras,the method achieves multi-agent autonomous collaborative detection.The experimental results show that the method effectively combines the visual information from multi-angle cameras,resulting in improved detec-tion efficiency for people in distress. 展开更多

Background Toxoplasma gondii oocysts,excreted in cat feces,pose a significant health risk to humans through contaminated soil and water.Rapid and accurate detection of T.gondii in environmental samples is essential for public health.Methods We developed a novel,single-tube detection method that integrates loop-mediated isothermal amplifiication(LAMP),the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats(CRISPR)/Cas12b system,and lateral flow immunoassay strips for rapid,visual identification of T.gondii.This method targeted the T.gondiiB1 gene,initially amplifies it with LAMP,directed by a single-guide RNA(sgRNA).It then recognizes the amplified target gene and activates trans-cleavage,cutting nearby single-stranded DNA(ssDNA)reporters.Fluorescence detection was performed using a 6-Carboxyfluorescein(FAM)-12N-BlackHoleQuencher-1(BHQ1)reporter,while.Fluorescein Isothiocyanate(FITC)-12N-Biotin enabled visual detection on lateral flow strips.The method was tested for its ability to detect various T.gondii genotypes and related parasites,assessing its specificity and broad-spectrum applicability.It was further applied to real-world environmental samples to evaluate its practicality.Results The LAMP-CRISPR/Cas12b method exhibited high specificity and broad-spectrum detection capability,successfully identifying nine T.gondii genotypes and distinguishing them from 11 other parasitic species.Sensitivity testing at both molecular(plasmid)and practical(oocyst)levels showed detection limits of 10 copies/μL and 0.1 oocyst,respectively.When applied to 112 environmental samples(soil,water,and cat feces),the method demonstrated 100%sensitivity,accurately reflecting known infection rates.Conclusions This LAMP-CRISPR/Cas12b single-tube method offers a robust,innovative approach for monitoring zoonotic T.gondii in environmental samples,with significant implications for public health surveillance. 展开更多

The Perception Spectrogram Structure Boundary(PSSB)parameter is proposed for speech endpoint detection as a preprocess of speech or speaker recognition.At first a hearing perception speech enhancement is carried out.Then the two-dimensional enhancement is performed upon the sound spectrogram according to the difference between the determinacy distribution characteristic of speech and the random distribution characteristic of noise.Finally a decision for endpoint was made by the PSSB parameter.Experimental results show that,in a low SNR environment from-10 dB to 10 dB,the algorithm proposed in this paper may achieve higher accuracy than the extant endpoint detection algorithms.The detection accuracy of 75.2%can be reached even in the extremely low SNR at-10 dB.Therefore it is suitable for speech endpoint detection in low-SNRs environment. 展开更多

Porous silicon microcavities (PSM) optical crystals consisting of a Fabry-Perot microcavity embedded between two distributed Bragg reflectors have been fabricated by electrochemical etching. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) clearly depicted their physical sandwich construction. The optical feature of the PSM structure was tuned by varying the anodization parameters. Through proper thermal oxidation and surface chemical modifications, the resulting structures were employed as optical sensors for the detection of environmental pollutants including volatile organic vapors (i.e. acetonitrile, toluene, cyclohexane, chloroform, acetone and ethanol) and interior decoration gases (i.e. toluene, ammonia and formaldehyde). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra confirmed the effective thermal annealing and surface modification chemistry, and the sensing process was accompanied by recording the modified structures' optical responses when exposed to target analytes. The PSM optical sensors showed good stability, sensitivity and selectivity, implying promising applications in gas sensing and en- vironmental monitoring. 展开更多

The red palm weevil(RPW; Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is spreading worldwide and severely harming many palm species. However, most studies on RPW focused on insect biology, and little information is available about the plant response to the attack. In the present experiment, we used metabolomics to study the alteration of the leaf metabolome of Phoenix canariensis at initial(1^(st) stage) or advanced(2^(nd) stage)attack by RPW compared with healthy(unattacked) plants.The leaf metabolome significantly varied among treatments. At the 1^(st) stage of attack, plants showed a reprogramming of carbohydrate and organic acid metabolism; in contrast, peptides and lipid metabolic pathways underwent more changes during the 2^(nd) than 1^(st) stage of attack. Enrichment metabolomics analysis indicated that RPW attack mostly affected a particular group of compounds rather than rearranging plant metabolic pathways. Some compounds selectively affected during the 1^(st) rather than 2^(nd) stage(e.g. phenylalanine; tryptophan; cellobiose;xylose; quinate; xylonite; idonate; and iso-threonate; cellobiotol and arbutine) are upstream events in the phenylpropanoid,terpenoid and alkaloid biosynthesis. These compounds could be designated as potential markers of initial RPW attack. However,further investigation is needed to determine efficient early screening methods of RPW attack based on the concentrations of these molecules. 展开更多
