This work aimed to explore the switch tendency of bicycle use between cyclists and non-cyclists.The attitude based market segmentation approach was proposed to achieve the research objective. The filed investigations were conducted in Nanjing,China,to obtain travelers' actions and attitudes towards bicycle uses. The structural equation modeling(SEM) was used to identify the attitudinal factors indicating variables and to explore the interrelationships among them. The SEMs were developed separately for the cyclist group and the non-cyclist group. All respondents were clustered into eight distinct segments by six selected attitudinal factors. The mode switch tendency and attitude in each segment is different from others, indicating that different segments have particular policies or strategies to encourage cycling.Policy implications that best serve the potential bicycle users were discussed to reduce the number of cyclists who have high tendency to use other modes, and increase the possibility of using bicycle in the non-cyclists group with the moderate and high switch tendency. 展开更多

The concept of facial impact protection mask for cyclists is proposed in response to increased participation in cycling and the need for injury prevention. The research aims to develop an approach for design of facial impact protection gear to reduce the risk of severe injury. Impact test equipment and procedure, face surrogate and protection material performance criteria are developed. Three groups of protective materials – rigid crushable, semi rigid, and soft cushion foams are tested and assessed according to criteria. The criteria are linked to measures of the risk of facial and brain injuries: HIC (Head Injury Criterion), peak deceleration, Face-bone damage and energy absorption. The impact energy is simulated by a drop test using a 48 mm-radius-steel hemispherical impactor, with a weight of 4.63 kg similar to that of headform J specified in AS/NZS standard. The drop-height is 1500 mm, and the linear deceleration force of the impactor is recorded and used to establish the performance of the materials. The HIC is used to predict the risk of brain injury, whereas the developed face surrogate is used to assess facial bone injury. A 5.4 m/s facial impact to the unprotected-face of a cyclist can result in the risk of severe facial bone fracture and mild brain injury. The impact test results for rigid foam protection of 40 mm thickness shows no densification (bottom out) and absorbs the impact energy without damage to the Foam-bone of the face surrogate. At 20 mm thickness, rigid polyurethane foams performed best with Foam-bone damage ranging from 15.1% to 20.5%. Other materials with thicknesses of 20 to 28 mm showed Foam-bone damage between 21.8% and 35.1%. The HIC values ranged from 267 to 522, with memory foams and expanded polystyrene foam having the lowest values. Peak deceleration ranged from 71 g to 105 g for the materials tested. It is concluded that the impact energy can be dissipated by the protection material thereby reducing the risk of severe facial injury to the protected area. 展开更多

Realistic urban scene generation has been extensively studied for the sake of the development of autonomous vehicles. However, the research has primarily focused on the synthesis of vehicles and pedestrians, while the generation of cyclists is rarely presented due to its complexity. This paper proposes a perspective-aware and realistic cyclist generation method via object retrieval. Images, semantic maps, and depth labels of objects are first collected from existing datasets, categorized by class and perspective, and calculated by an algorithm newly designed according to imaging principles. During scene generation, objects with the desired class and perspective are retrieved from the collection and inserted into the background, which is then sent to the modified 2D synthesis model to generate images. This pipeline introduces a perspective computing method, utilizes object retrieval to control the perspective accurately, and modifies a diffusion model to achieve high fidelity. Experiments show that our proposal gets a 2.36 Fréchet Inception Distance, which is lower than the competitive methods, indicating a superior realistic expression ability. When these images are used for augmentation in the semantic segmentation task, the performance of ResNet-50 on the target class can be improved by 4.47%. These results demonstrate that the proposed method can be used to generate cyclists in corner cases to augment model training data, further enhancing the perception capability of autonomous vehicles and improving the safety performance of autonomous driving technology. 展开更多

Bicycling is an important way for college students and employees to get around campuses. With a rise in bicycling on campuses there comes a rise in bicycle collisions with pedestrians walking to and from classes and work. The literature review showed many papers involving bicycle conflict modeling but on roads with motor vehicles. While some aspects of this research can be applied to non-motorized paths, there is a lack of research strictly focusing on only bicycles and pedestrians. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by developing a model to identify locations on roads and paths (hotspots) on college campuses that are likely to have a bicycle collision and predict the likelihood of a serious bicycle crash on a non-motorized path based on the characteristics of the path. This study identifies those interactions between bicyclists and pedestrians on non-motorized paths on a suburban college campus in Newark, USA. Findings suggest that pedestrian density of a path is a major factor in the maximum speed bicyclists can achieve. The wider the path is, the higher the maximum speed is that a bicyclist can obtain. This is because a wider path width decreases the pedestrian density. The grade of the path has little effect on bicycle speeds. The results of the models were displayed on a GIS map that is visually appealing to a viewer. The paths were color coded based on their level of safety, so it is easy to observe problematic areas of the network. This technique can be applied to the entire campus network of non-motorized paths to study the whole system. This can then be used by planners and designers to identify areas that need upgrading and improve the overall safety of the non-motorized path system. 展开更多

Road safety is the most important feature of a modern city, and it affects almost everyone in the community, especially vulnerable road users(VRUs).This paper comprehensively examines existing scientific literature regarding contemporary methodologies for collect-ing data in safety studies involving VRUs.The objective is to compile a comprehensive list of data collection methods, recognize potential applications of emerging technologies, and categorize them based on a novel taxonomy.A preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta analyses(PRISMA)flowchart is used to conduct the systematic literature search by setting some inclusion and exclusion criteria.Different keyword searches are used in Scopus and Web of Science databases, followed by relevant references and citation analysis to find eligible papers subject to a full-text peer review. Finally, the identified papers are categorized and analyzed based on the technology type they used.8374 and 109 papers have been identified from the initial search and the forward and backward snowballing,respectively.167 documents have been selected to carry out full-text reviews, with 135 finally included in the study. The technology employed in safety research for VRUs,including cameras, sensors, trackers, mobile phones, social media, drones, and eye-tracking devices has also been included in the classification of identified documents.Commonly employed methods for collecting data on VRUs include camera-based,sensor-based,and tracker-based approaches. The mobile phone-based approach has been least common for collecting data on pedestrians’safety because of distractions. In recent years, social media-based,drone,and eye-tracking approaches have become widely uti-lized for collecting and analyzing data.Recently, multiple approaches have been employed for data collection. The documents predominantly have addressed the movements,behav-iors,emotions,and route choices of pedestrians.Similarly, documents related to cyclists have been mainly concerned with obstacle detection, analysis of cyclists’behavior, and guiding cyclists. 展开更多

Well maintained cycleways will encourage more people to cycle,as the condition of cycleways is important for the safety, accessibility and riding comfort of cyclists.Despite that, only a few models used to describe the quality of service for cyclists take the surface condition into account. Objective measuring methods are needed to enable reliable and effective assessment of surface conditions, and measurable performance criteria related to the needs of cyclists should be developed. The purpose of this study has been to test the reliability and validity of using accelerometers in smartphones to assess the riding comfort on cycleways.A smartphone application converting three-dimensional accelerometer measurements into a single indicator for cycleways has been used to assess road surfaces in two field studies,in Sweden and Norway, respectively. Both studies assessed test sections of varying quality. To relate the measurements to subjective riding comfort assessments by cyclists, recruited cyclists collected quantitative data using the app, whilst also rating their perceived riding comfort by completing a survey.Measurements were also related to standard road surface condition indicators, generated from a road surface tester equipped with 19 laser sensors:international roughness index(IRI),mega-and macrotexture. The results show that it is possible to describe the unevenness of a cycleway using the technology present in smartphones.A software application can be used to collect and analyse data from the acceleration sensors in the phone, which can then be used to describe the riding comfort of cyclists. It is mainly the unevenness in the 50-1000 mm sizerange that create the greatest discomfort for cyclists, and intermittent vibrations are perceived as more uncomfortable than more evenly distributed vibrations. Therefore,IRI is not a relevant measurement for describing the riding comfort of cyclists. 展开更多

Background Both athletes with intensive exercise and aged people may have weakened immunity against virus infection. This study aimed to evaluate whether people undergoing aerobic exercises including competitive cyclists with moderate training (CMT) and middle-aged people practicing Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) exercise have higher immunity against hepatitis B virus than age-matched sedentary controls including college students (CSC) and middle-aged people (MSC). Methods Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells from competitive cyclists and sedentary controls were stimulated by phytohemagglutinin (PHA) to prepare conditioned medium (MNC-CM) for the assessment of inhibitory effects on hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) expression in human hepatoma Hep3B cells. Results The inhibitory effects on the relative HBsAg expression of CMT's and TCC's MNC-CM were greater than those of the controls. The CMT's MNC-CM prepared from 5 μg/ml PHA decreased HBsAg expression to 61.5%, whereas that of CSC remained at 83.8%. Similarly, this expression by treatment of TCC group' MNC-CM was 68.4% whereas that of MSC group was 84.3%. The levels of cytokines such as interferon-γ(IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IFN-α and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in the MNC-CM from the CMT and TCC groups were greater than those in the controls. Antibody neutralization of CMT's MNC-CM and addition of recombinant cytokines into CSC's MNC-CM indicated that IFN-γ, TNF-α and IFN-α had synergistic effects against HBsAg expression. Similar blocking effect was noted in TCC versus MSC groups. Conclusion These results suggest that the immunomodulatory response to suppress HBsAg expression in CMT and TCC with moderate aerobic exercise is greater than that in age-matched sedentary controls. 展开更多

There is a growing global interest in developing and accommodating sustainable modes of travel.Cycling is an important mode of travel which offers powerful solutions to chronic traffic problems of congestion and emissions. The accuracy of cyclist position is considered as an important parameter for the calculation of cyclist speed.Cyclist speed data is required for precise design of traffic control measures, for safety studies, and for sight distance analysis.Different speed measurement techniques and results are found in the literature. This study critically examines peer-reviewed studies which discuss different techniques for measuring cyclist speed. This review covers the accuracy of the measurement techniques and highlights limitations of the reviewed studies. These identified limitations are classified as:limited range of movement directions, selection of observed cyclists, seasonal variation in measurements, completeness of results reporting, reporting of equipment limitations, and measurement validation. The study summarizes previous findings of cyclist speed statistics. This study also reviews the level of automation in speed measurement.Any technique involving a human input during the field data collection or analysis to estimate cyclist speed is classified as a manual.Further categories for semiautomated and automated measurement techniques are established.Meta-analysis was conducted to test whether reported cyclist speed depends on where they were recorded;intersections or road segments. The result of the unpaired t-test showed that there is no significant difference between the means of the cyclists speed at road sections and signalized intersections at the 95%of confidence level. The study emphasizes the growing importance of the use of automated computer vision techniques for speed measurement. The paper contrasts the advantages of computer vision techniques with other measurement techniques. 展开更多
