An integrated coupling element considering wheel-rail interface for analyzing the dynamic responses of vehicle-rail-bridge interaction system with a non-uniform continuous bridge is presented. The governing equations of the interaction system are established first, and the solution procedure and assembly method of the coupling element are demonstrated. Finally, the accuracy, efficiency and function of the integrated coupling element are tested using two numerical examples. The influences of different combinations of rail and bridge element length in the coupling element on the solution are investigated, and the effects of different rail irregularities on the dynamic responses are discussed. 展开更多

Extenics is a newly developed interdisciplinary subject combining mathematics, philosophy and engineering. It provides useful formalized qualitative tools and quantitative tools for solving contradictory problems. In this paper, extension theory is introduced briefly and the primary applications of this theory and methods in bionic engineering research are discussed. The extension model of biological coupling functional system is established. In order to identify the primary and secondary sequencing of coupling elements, the Extension Analytic Hierarchy Process (EAHP) was adopted to analyze the contribution of each coupling element to the coupling functional system. Thus, the influence weight factor of each coupling element can be determined, so as to provide a new approach for solving primary and secondary sequencing problem of coupling elements in a quantitative way, and facilitate the subsequent bionic coupling study. 展开更多

To fundamentally alleviate the excavation chamber clogging during slurry tunnel boring machine(TBM)advancing in hard rock,large-diameter short screw conveyor was adopted to slurry TBM of Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Second Undersea Tunnel. To evaluate the discharging performance of short screw conveyor in different cases, the full-scale transient slurry-rock two-phase model for a short screw conveyor actively discharging rocks was established using computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method(CFD-DEM)coupling approach. In the fluid domain of coupling model, the sliding mesh technology was utilized to describe the rotations of the atmospheric composite cutterhead and the short screw conveyor. In the particle domain of coupling model, the dynamic particle factories were established to produce rock particles with the rotation of the cutterhead. And the accuracy and reliability of the CFD-DEM simulation results were validated via the field test and model test.Furthermore,a comprehensive parameter analysis was conducted to examine the effects of TBM operating parameters, the geometric design of screw conveyor and the size of rocks on the discharging performance of short screw conveyor.Accordingly,a reasonable rotational speed of screw conveyor was suggested and applied to Jiaozhou Bay Second Undersea Tunnel project. The findings in this paper could provide valuable references for addressing the excavation chamber clogging during ultra-large-diameter slurry TBM tunneling in hard rock for similar future. 展开更多

An element coupling model (ECM) method was proposed to simulate the global behavior and local damage of a structure. In order to reflect the local damage and improve the computational efficiency,three-dimensional (3D) solid elements and one-dimensional (1D) beam element were coupled by the multi-point constraint equations.A reduced scale 1?8 model test was simulated by the ECM and a full three dimensional model (3DM) contrastively. The results show that the global behavior and local damages of ECM agree well with the test and 3DM.It is indicated that the proposed method can be used in the structural nonlinear analysis accurately and efficiently. 展开更多

Rail vehicles generate huge longitudinal impact loads in collisions. If unreasonable matching exists between the compressive strength of the intermediate coupler and the structural strength of the car body, the risk of car body structure damage and train derailment will increase.Herein,a four-stage rigid-flexible coupling finite element model of the coupler is established considering the coupler buckling load. The influence of the coupler buckling load on the train longitudinal-vertical-hori-zontal buckling behavior was studied, and the mechanism of the train horizontal buckling instability in train collisions was revealed.Analysis results show that an intermediate coupler should be designed to ensure that the actual buckling load is less than the compressive load when the car body structure begins to deform plastically. The actual buckling load of the coupler and the asymmetry of the structural strength of the car body in the lateral direction are two important influencing factors for the lateral buckling of a train collision. If the strength of the two sides of the car body structure in the lateral direction is asymmetrical, the deformation on the weaker side will be larger, and the end of the car body will begin to deflect under the action of the coupler force, which in turn causes the train to undergo sawtooth buckling. 展开更多

We propose a multi-field implicit finite element method for analyzing the electromechanical behavior of dielectric elastomers. This method is based on a four-field variational principle, which includes displacement and electric potential for the electromechanical coupling analysis, and additional independent fields to address the incompressible constraint of the hyperelastic material. Linearization of the variational form and finite element discretization are adopted for the numerical implementation. A general FEM program framework is devel- oped using C++ based on the open-source finite element library deal.II to implement this proposed algorithm. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy, convergence properties, mesh-independence properties, and scalability of this method. We also use the method for eigenvalue analysis of a dielectric elastomer actuator subject to electromechanical loadings. Our finite element implementation is available as an online supplementary material. 展开更多

A domain decomposition algorithm coupling the finite element and the boundary element was presented. It essentially involves subdivision of the analyzed domain into sub-regions being independently modeled by two methods, i.e., the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM). The original problem was restored with continuity and equilibrium conditions being satisfied on the interface of the two sub-regions using an iterative algorithm. To speed up the convergence rate of the iterative algorithm, a dynamically changing relaxation parameter during iteration was introduced. An advantage of the proposed algorithm is that the locations of the nodes on the interface of the two sub-domains can be inconsistent. The validity of the algorithm is demonstrated by the consistence of the results of a numerical example obtained by the proposed method and those by the FEM, the BEM and a present finite element-boundary element (FE-BE) coupling method. 展开更多

A hydromechanical interface element is proposed for the consideration of the hydraulic-mechanical coupling effect along the interface. The fully coupled governing equations and the relevant finite element formulations are derived in detail for the interface element. All the involved matrices are of the same form as those of a solid element, which makes the incorporation of the model into a finite element program straightforward.Three examples are then numerically simulated using the interface element.Reasonable results confirm the correctness of the proposed model and motivate its application in hydromechanical contact problems in the future. 展开更多

An improved analytical method to determine the content of 52 major, minor and trace elements in marine geological samples, using a HF-HCl-HNO_3 acid system with a high-pressure closed digestion method(HPCD), is studied by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry(ICP-OES) and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS). The operating parameters of the instruments are optimized, and the optimal analytical parameters are determined. The influences of optical spectrum and mass spectrum interferences, digestion methods and acid systems on the analytical results are investigated. The optimal spectral lines and isotopes are chosen, and internal standard element of rhodium is selected to compensate for matrix effects and analytical signals drifting. Compared with the methods of an electric heating plate digestion and a microwave digestion, a high-pressure closed digestion method is optimized with less acid, complete digestion, less damage for digestion process. The marine geological samples are dissolved completely by a HF-HCl-HNO_3 system, the relative error(RE) for the analytical results are all less than 6.0%. The method detection limits are 2–40μg/g by the ICP-OES, and 6–80 ng/g by ICP-MS. The methods are used to determine the marine sediment reference materials(GBW07309, GBW07311, GBW07313), rock reference materials(GBW07103, GBW07104,GBW07105), and cobalt-rich crust reference materials(GBW07337, GBW07338, GBW07339), the obtained analytical results are in agreement with the certified values, and both of the relative standard deviation(RSD) and the relative error(RE) are less than 6.0%. The analytical method meets the requirements for determining 52 elements contents of bulk marine geological samples. 展开更多

The coupling iteration (CI) of the finite element method(FEM) is used to simulate the magnetic and mechanical characteristics for a GMM actuator. The convergent ability under different prestress and different load types is investigated. Then the calculated deformations are compared with the experimental values. The results convince that the CI of FEM is suitable for the simulation of energy coupling and transformation mechanism of the GMM. At last, the output deformation properties are studied under different input currents, showing that there is a good compromise between good linearity and large strain under the prestress 6 MPa. 展开更多

Considering the interaction between a sleeper, ballast layer, and substructure,a three-dimensional coupled discrete-finite element method for a ballasted railway track is proposed in this study.Ballast granules with irregular shapes are constructed using a clump model using the discrete element method.Meanwhile, concrete sleepers, embankments, and foundations are modelled using 20-node hexahedron solid elements using the finite element method. To improve computational efficiency,a GPU-based(Graphics Processing Unit)parallel framework is applied in the discrete element simulation.Additionally,an algorithm containing contact search and transfer parameters at the contact interface of discrete particles and finite elements is developed in the GPU parallel environment accordingly.A benchmark case is selected to verify the accuracy of the coupling algorithm. The dynamic response of the ballasted rail track is analysed under different train speeds and loads.Meanwhile, the dynamic stress on the substructure surface obtained by the established DEM-FEM model is compared with the in situ experimental results. Finally, stress and displacement contours in the cross-section of the model are constructed to further visualise the response of the ballasted railway. This proposed coupling model can provide important insights into high-performance coupling algorithms and the dynamic characteristics of full scale ballasted rail tracks. 展开更多

Fluid field is changed under the exciting of rotor vibration. On the same ti me, a net force caused by fluid pressure exerts on rotor, which will change roto r vibration. So, the fluid-solid coupled analysis method must be used. Traditionally, numerical difference method was used to solve fluid problems. The coupled fluid-solid equation could not be set up based on the method. It is no t until finite element method was used in fluid dynamics area then can the coupl ed dynamics be researched. Recently many experimental, analytical and numerical studies have been used in the area . But in these investigations, it is a ssumed that the solid vibration could not be influenced by fluid. In the other w ords, the force exerted on solid from fluid was neglected in the papers. So, the models built were some kinds of semi-coupled model only. In this paper, the Galerkin finite-element method, two-dimension vibration equ ation of rigid body and Navier-Stokes equations are used to build a full-coupl ed fluid-solid model in rotor-bearing system. Some assumptions are taken: 1) In fluid equation, the nonlinear terms are relatively small and neglected. 2) The gravity takes no effect on this system. 3) The bearing and the rotor are long. Flow and leakage along the axis is neglec ted. 4) The fluid is a kind of Newtonian incondensable viscous fluid. 5) The rotor is considered to be a rigid body. Using the model established, we calculated all the examples given by paper , results show the error are less than 7%. So the full-coupled model is built c orrectly. Examples are given in the end of the paper. After analyzing the examples, we get some conclusions: 1) In rotor-bearing system, while being taken under two conditions that whether coupled method is taken or not, difference of pressure and vibration amplitude could reach 76% and 120%. Therefore coupled method must be taken to investigate fluid-solid system. 1) Amplitude of fluid pressure can be more or less influenced by rotor unbalance , gap, eccentricity and other factors. 2) By using coupling method, results show that the amplitudes of vibration and p ressure are greater than ignoring the method. It should be paid more attention t o. 展开更多

Top-down crack in asphalt pavements has been reported as a widespread mode of failure.A solid understanding of the mechanisms of crack growth is essential to predict pavement performance in the context of thickness design,as well as in the design and optimization of mixtures.Using the coupled element free Galerkin (EFG) and finite element (FE) method,top-down crack propagation in asphalt pavements is numerically simulated on the basis of fracture mechanics.A parametric study is conducted to isolate the effects of overlay thickness and stiffness, base thickness and stiffness on top-down crack propagation in asphalt pavements. The results show that longitudinal wheel loads are disadvantageous to top-down crack because it increases the compound stress intensity factor (SIF) at the tip of top-down crack and shortens the crack path, and thus the fatigue life descends. The SIF experiences a process "sharply ascending—slowly descending—slowly ascending—sharply ascending again" with the crack propagating. The thicker the overlay or the base, the lower the SIF; the greater the overlay stiffness, the higher the SIF.The crack path is hardly affected by stiffness of the overlay and base. 展开更多

This paper mainly discusses the problem of ground-borne vibrations due to the planned line 8 of Beijing metro which passes under the National Measurement Laboratory.A lot of vibration sensitive equipments are placed in the laboratory. It is therefore necessary to study the impact of vibrations induced by metro trains on sensitive equipments and important to propound a feasible vibration mitigation measure.Based on the coupled periodic finite element-boundary element (FE-BE) method,a 3D dynamic track-tunnel-soil interaction model for metro line 8 has been used to predict vibrations in the free field induced by trains running at variable speeds between 30 km/h and 80 km/h.Four types of track structures commonly used on the Beijing metro network have been considered:(1) high resilience direct fixation fasteners,(2) Vanguard fasteners,(3) a floating slab track and (4) a floating ladder track. For each of these track types, the vibration isolation efficiency has been compared. The results of the numerical study can be used to predict vibrations in nearby buildings and to decide upon effective vibration countermeasures. 展开更多

In this work, a novel two-way method is proposed to fully couple a shock-capturing hydrodynamic model with a discrete element model (DEM) for simulation of complex debris-enriched flow hydrodynamics. After being validated against an idealized analytical test, the new coupled model is used to reproduce flume experiments of floating debris driven by dam-break waves. As the joint type between the auto door hinge and the inner plate, projection welding may bring welding distortions and would affect the assembly quality of auto body.
