The cast alloys were characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The corrosion behavior of the as-cast Mg-8Li-3Al+xCe alloys were studied under salt spray tests in 3.5wt% NaC l solution at 35°C, in accordance with standard ASTM B-117, in conjunction with potentiodynamic polarization(PDP) tests. The results show that the addition of Ce to Mg-8Li-3Al(LA83) alloy results in the formation of Al_2Ce intermetallic phase, refines both the α-Mg phase and the Mg_(17)Al_(12) intermetallic phase, and then increases the microhardness of the alloys. The results of PDP and salt spray tests reveal that an increase in Ce content to 1.5wt% decreases the corrosion rate. The best corrosion resistance is observed for the LA83 alloy sample with 1.0wt% Ce.展开更多

The effect of chloride ion concentration, pH values and difFerent temperatures on the pitting parameters were determined. The morphology of the pits produced after anodic polarization treatments was inspected by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that, the increase in chloride ion concentration shifts Epit and Eprot of the alloy toward negative values and the pitting potential is much more dependent on pH value in the basic region. The breakdown of passivity with increasing temperature may be due to kinetic changes of passivating films and dissolution rate of the alloy in its passive state展开更多

The protective property of the corrosion product layer was also explored. Experimental results reveal that the type of microstructure has significant effect on the corrosion resistance of HSLA steel. The measurement results of weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicate that the steel with acicular ferrite microstructure exhibits the lowest corrosion rate. Martensite exhibits a reduced corrosion resistance compared with polygonal ferrite. It is found that the surface of the acicular ferrite specimen uniformly covered by corrosion products is seemingly denser and more compact than those of the other two microstructures, and can provide some amount of protection to the steel; thus, the charge transfer resistance and modulus values of the acicular ferrite specimen are the largest. However, corrosion products on martensite and polygonal ferrite are generally loose, porous, and defective, and can provide minor protectiveness; thus, the charge transfer resistance values for polygonal ferrite and martensite are lower.展开更多

The experimental results indicate that DMEA is not a good inhibitor but the composite of DMEA with caprylic acid exhibits excellent inhibiting efficiency. The synergic mechanism of the organic corrosion inhibitors(OCIs) was studied with quantum chemical calculations. It is found that the DMEA forms a quaternary ammonium salt with the proton in carboxylic acid, and a cyclic complex formed between the salt and Fe may be responsible for the enhancement of inhibiting efficiency. The possible hydrogen bond formed between DMEA and carboxylic acid is not enough for the inhibiting effect. This work is helpful to proposing theoretical interpretation as well as developing a functional organic inhibitor to improve the durability of reinforced concrete contaminated with chloride.展开更多

The behaviour of these inhibitors in acidic medium were investigated using weight loss method, open circuit potential and linear polarization technique. These inhibitors provided satisfactory corrosion inhibition for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid solutions even at higher temperature and acid concentration (10%). The electrochemical results showed that the polarization resistance (Rp) values increased with increasing inhibitor concentration, also the corrosion current decreased and a higher inhibition efficiency was obtained. The protective properties of these two organic inhibitors were attributed to the chemisorption mechanism展开更多

The results show that AA7003 is to a certain extent susceptible to SCC via anodic dissolution(AD) at open-circuit potential(OCP) and is highly susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement(HE) at high negative Ea in the solutions with p H levels of 4 and 11. The susceptibility increases with negative shift in the potential when Ea is less than-1000 m V vs. SCE. However, the susceptibility distinctly decreases because of the inhibition of AD when Ea is equal to-1000 m V vs. SCE. In addition, the SCC susceptibility of AA7003 in the acid chloride solution is higher than that in the alkaline solution at each potential. Moreover, the effect of hydrogen on SCC increases with increasing hydrogen ion concentration.展开更多

The results show that elastic strain has little contribution to material dissolution. The elastic tension strain results in the decrease in the transient current, while the elastic compression strain increases the transient current. Compared to the elastic deformation, plastic deformation affects material dissolution evidently For iron in 3.5%NaCl solution, the strain amplitude plays a dominant role in the dissolution process accelerated by the plastic strain, while in 3.5%NaCl+1%NaNO2 solution, both the strain amplitude and strain rate play an important role in this process. In this paper, the effect of the elastic deformation on the material dissolution and the relation between the tension and compression current peak values under the plastic cycle deformation are discussed展开更多

However, the substituting degree of Al^(3+) for Si^(4+)(Al[4]/Si) in the paste does not change evidently. Effect of Na_2SO_4 solution on C-S-H is not significantly influenced by Na Cl solution, while the MCL and Al[4]/Si of C-S-H in fly ashcement paste slightly change. However, the decalcification of C-S-H by SO_4^(2-) and CO_3^(2-) attack, as well as the activation of fly ash by SO_4^(2-) attack will increase the MCL and Al[4]/Si, which are both higher than that under Na_2SO_4 corrosion, MgSO_4 or Na_2SO_4 +Na Cl coordination corrosion.展开更多

SCC susceptibility of the steel increases rapidly with strain rate decreasing from 1 · 10 5s 1to 5 · 10 7s 1, and becomes stable when strain rate is lower than 5 · 10 7s 1. SCC propagation of the steel in the solution at open circuit potential(OCP) needs sufficient hydrogen which is supplied at a certain strain rate.Fracture surface at OCP has similar characteristics with that at cathodic polarization 1000 mVSCE, which presents characteristic fractography of hydrogen induced cracking(HIC).All of these indicate that SCC behavior of the steel in the solution at OCP is mainly controlled by HIC rather than anodic dissolution(AD).展开更多

In pore solutions in the presence of Ce(NO3)3?6H2O, the corrosion potential, polarization resistance and impedance of carbon steel obviously increased in contrast to the situation in the absence of cerium salts. The pore solution with [NO2-] / [Cl-] = 0.3 and 0.1% Ce(NO3)3?6H2O, carbon steel shows better corrosion resistance than that in the pore solution with [NO2-] / [Cl-] = 0.6, which indicates that a small amount of Ce(NO3)3?6H2O in pore solutions can effectively promote passivation of the steel and reduce the threshold [NO2-] / [Cl-] ratio for corrosion control. The surface layer formed in cerium salt containing pore solutions is more compact and smooth and 1.36%Ce is examined on the sample surface. The addition of 0.1% Ce(NO3)3?6H2O in pore solutions can decrease the corrosion rate of steel in pore solutions and has little influence on pH change of the solutions. However, more cerium nitrate addition above 0.1% may result in pH decrease of the solution.展开更多
