Such individual differences in ways of coping with stress are relevant both in biomedicine, since different personalities may experience a different stress and disease vulnerability, and in behavioural ecology, since their adaptive value and evolutionary maintenance are the subject of debate. However, the precise way in which individual stress differences and personalities are linked is unclear. Here we provide an updated overview of this covariation across different species and taxa, consider its functional significance and present working hypotheses for how behavioural and physiological responses to stress might be causally linked, affecting life-history traits such as dispersal and life-span [Current Zoology 56 (6): 728-740, 2010].展开更多

Many young people anticipate the prospect of becoming biological mothers and fathers. This expectation of parenthood emanates as individuals and couples are socially groomed to aspire to this social norm. Therefore, infertility can be a very traumatic and tormenting time for many men and women who aspire to conform to these socio-cultural conventions of normative parenthood and who believe that childbearing is central to their lives. Infertility is medically defined as the inability to achieve a pregnancy after a period of at least twelve months of regular sexual intercourse without contraception. For both men and women infertility may present pervasive feelings of incompleteness, a sense of failure and inadequacy. However, infertile women tend to endure a myriad of feeling losses and high levels of suffering and sorrow as a result of their inability to have children. This study explored a sample of South Africa women’s experiences of coping with infertility. Utilising a qualitative methodology, a diverse group of 21 married women who were diagnosed with primary infertility were recruited. Semi-structured, in-depth individual interviews were conducted and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The results of the study indicated that the women reported emotional turmoil characterised by emotions such as disappointment and shock, anger and frustration, a deep sense of sadness and then progressed to experience a sense of acknowledgement that a problem existed. The findings of this study suggest that severe psychological and emotional strain accompany infertility. The coping strategies employed by these women in the study included social withdrawal and women isolating themselves from social events and social gatherings, avoiding pregnant women and women with children, engaging in escapism strategies on both a psychological level and a physical level. Employing an escapism strategy on a psychological level would involve deliberately thinking about strategies to avoid thinking about infertility, pregnancy or babies. Escapism on the physical level would include engaging in activities like shopping, working longer hours, sleeping more than usual, engaging in activities that would occupy an individual to the extent that they cannot think about anything else except the activities they are currently engaged in.展开更多

In the meantime, adolescents and especially girls are more likely to be harmed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of group training with non-violent communication (NVC) method on suicidal ideations and coping with stress styles of adolescent girls. The target community in this research was availably selected from the charity centers of Tehran suburbs. In this study, 15 adolescent girls were in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. The criteria for entering the research were students aged 11 to 19 years and the vulnerable socio-economic income. Eight training sessions of NVC were presented for the experimental group in the pre-test and post-test intervals, while no intervention was performed for the control group. Data collection instruments were Beck’s scale for suicidal ideation (BDI) and Endler & Parker’s coping inventory for stressful situations (CISS). After statistical analysis, the effectiveness of this training was investigated on dependent variables by multivariate analysis of covariance. Eventually, the results showed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p < 0.05). The finding of the study showed that NVC training can reduce suicidal ideations in adolescent girls who are socially and economically vulnerable. According to the findings, non-violent communication training has a higher effect on emotion-focused coping style compared to other stress coping styles.展开更多

Shocks could be caused by extreme adverse natural events (droughts, storms, flood, and landslides) and market-related events (fuel, food, input and output price fluctuations, volatilities and price hikes). Most of these shocks affect production systems, food markets and local economies, all of which have direct effects on food security. This study explores the prevalence of shocks among indigenous vegetable farmers in Kenya followed by an assessment of the type of coping strategies in response to these shocks. We find that over two thirds of farmers have coping strategies that are not based on market-related insurance mechanisms;rather they use strategies such as working for more hours and selling assets. We analyze which socioeconomic and institutional factors determine households’ decision and extent of coping with shocks. The results showed that access to high-value markets and market information were the major factors informing their decision and extent of using coping strategies along with access to critical services such as credit, extension, and farmer groups. This has significant policy implications regarding the dissemination of information and promotion of credit markets through mobile phone-based platforms for easy accessibility in remote rural areas. Social capital should be encouraged because it acts as a necessary and sufficient conduit for information dissemination and mutual support to help farmers’ access critical services and resources needed for successful and sustainable implementation of relevant and appropriate coping strategies.展开更多

It examines the mechanism for coping with distress in Islam. Though inferences were drawn from the Muslim Scripture (i.e. the Glorious Qur'an) and the experiences of the prophets of God, the paper posits that every human being in today's world experiences moments of grief that are similar to those experienced by those prophets and as such, strategies adopted by them could still be found useful in the contemporary times. The paper has six parts. The introduction forms part one and this is followed by an examination of the causes of distress. In part three, the different signs and manifestations of distress in individuals are discussed while part four looks at the conventional or scientific ways of coping with moments of grief. The section that follows critically discusses the lslamic paradigm for coping with moments of grief. Thereafter the conclusions were drawn and some recommendations were offered.展开更多

文摘In the past decade there has been a profusion of studies highlighting covariation between individual differences in stress physiology and behavioural profiles, here called personalities. Here we provide an updated overview of this covariation across different species and taxa, consider its functional significance and present working hypotheses for how behavioural and physiological responses to stress might be causally linked, affecting life-history traits such as dispersal and life-span [Current Zoology 56 (6): 728-740, 2010].

文摘Objective:The concept of coping with disease appears frequently in the literature;however, there is no precise definition of coping. The aim of this study is to clarify coping concept, and to identify its attributes, antecedents, and consequences in patients with multiple sclerosis. Methods:Rodgers'evolutionary method of concept analysis was used to clarify the concept of coping.A literature review was conducted with key terms‘multiple sclerosis’,‘coping’,‘adjustment’,and‘deal with’.After searching databases,1370 papers were found for the period 1995e2017.Finally,55 articles and texts were selected for analysis.Data analysis was carried out using thematic analysis. An independent researcher checked the process to ensure credibility and reduce personal bias. Results:Coping with multiple sclerosis is a multidimensional concept with three main attributes:maintenance of emotional balance, acceptance of the disease, and self-regulation.Social support, awareness toward the disease, attitude toward the disease, and religious-spiritual beliefs were found as antecedents.Health promotion, adherence to treatment regimen, independence in personal life and social relationships, and improvement of family relationships were found as consequences of these attributes. Conclusion:These findings not only add to the body of knowledge in health science, but also serve as an important motivation for further theory development and research in this context.Nurses and health professions can also benefit from a deeper understanding of coping concept in providing and planning healthcare for these patients.
文摘Living under ongoing shelling and missile attacks could cause a widespread of disruption of everyday life and emotional distress.Coping with such distress could be associated with the personal resources of religion and spirituality. The present study aimed to examine the relationships between religiosity and spirituality with Post Traumatic stress Disorder(PTSD)symptoms among a civilian population frequently exposed to missile and rocket threats. One hundred and twenty-four(N=124)civilian participants living within 10 km from shelling and missile attacks fired towards them, completed demographic, religiosity, spirituality, and PTSD questionnaires. The study findings demonstrate that religiosity is associated with higher levels of PTSD symptoms while spirituality is associated with lower levels of PTSD symptoms. When dividing the sample into two groupsreligious and secular,no association was found between religiosity and PTSD symptoms among the religious group, whereas among the secular group, there was a positive association.Spirituality was negatively associated with PTSD symptoms among both groups. This study may offer a significant contribution to models of intervention following continued exposure to trauma, emphasizing the importance of spiritually and sensitivity to religion while coping with PTSD symptoms.Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
文摘One of the important dimensions of violence is suicide, or violence directed toward self that many people suffer from nowadays. According to the findings, non-violent communication training has a higher effect on emotion-focused coping style compared to other stress coping styles.
文摘Farm households in developing countries are faced with various challenges one of which is occurrence of unexpected negative events namely shocks. Social capital should be encouraged because it acts as a necessary and sufficient conduit for information dissemination and mutual support to help farmers’ access critical services and resources needed for successful and sustainable implementation of relevant and appropriate coping strategies.

文摘This paper offers pragmatic religious approach to handling moments of grief. Thereafter the conclusions were drawn and some recommendations were offered.
文摘Background:Self-esteem,life satisfaction, resilience, and coping strategies are closely linked to depression;however, their interrelationships and relative contributions to depressive outcomes remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to examine these associations in individuals with major depressive disorder(MDD)and healthy controls and to evaluate their predictive and mediating roles in depression. Methods:This analytical cross-sectional study included 311 participants(158 patients with MDD and 153 healthy controls)recruited from the Psychiatry Outpatient Clinics of Mugla Training and Research Hospital.Psychiatric diagnoses were confirmed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5(SCID-5).Groups were balanced for age, sex, and education using propensity score matching(PSM).Participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale,Satisfaction with Life Scale,Brief Resilience Scale,Brief COPE Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory. Results:Compared with healthy controls, individuals with MDD reported significantly lower life satisfaction and resilience and higher depressive symptom severity, whereas self-esteem did not differ significantly between groups.Emotion-focused coping decreased with increasing depression severity, while avoidant coping showed a modest but significant increase in severe depression.Logistic regression analyses identified life satisfaction(OR=0.95,p=0.004)and resilience(OR=0.92,p=0.002)as significant protective predictors of depression.Mediation analyses demonstrated that life satisfaction partially mediated the relationship between self-esteem and depression, whereas resilience exerted a predominantly direct effect. Conclusion:Life satisfaction and resilience emerge as key protective factors against depression.Self-esteem appears to influence depressive outcomes indirectly through life satisfaction rather than through a direct effect. These findings underscore the importance of interventions that enhance resilience and promote positive evaluations of life in individuals at risk for depression.
文摘BACKGROUND Resilience is an individual’s ability and psychological rebound capacity to adapt well after experiencing adversity, trauma, etc.Patients with strong resilience can face illnesses actively.AIM To determine the association of resilience with coping styles and quality of life in patients with malignancies.METHODS This study included patients with malignant tumors who were hospitalized at Fuyang Hospital Affiliated to Anhui Medical University from March 2022 to March 2024.The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale,Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire,Social Support Rating Scale, and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 were utilized to assess patients’resilience, coping styles, social support, and quality of life, respectively.Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to assess the correlations.RESULTS A total of 175 patients with malignant tumors demonstrated no marked difference in terms of age, education level, employment status, monthly household income, and disease staging(P<0.05).Further,patients with malignancies demonstrated scores of 17.49±1.20,17.27±1.46,and 11.19±1.29 points in terms of coping styles in confrontation, avoidance, and resignation dimensions, respectively.Subjective support, objective support, and support utilization scores in terms of social support were 10.67±1.80,11.26±2.08,and 9.24±1.14 points, respectively. The total resilience score and tenacity,self-improvement,and optimism dimension scores were positively correlatedwith the confrontation coping style score, whereas the total resilience score and tenacity and self-improvementscores were negatively associated with avoidance and resignation coping style scores(P<0.05).The total resiliencescore and the tenacity dimension score were positively associated with physical, role, cognitive, emotional, andsocial functions,as well as global health status(P<0.05),and were inversely related to fatigue, insomnia, andeconomic difficulties(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONThe resilience of patients with malignancies is positively associated with the confrontation dimension in the copingstyle, the total and various social support domain scores, and the overall quality of life.Clinical medical staff needto pay attention to the effect of medical coping styles and social support on the resilience level of patients withmalignancies to further improve their quality of life.

Conclusion: The KAP health education model can effectively enhance the coping ability of caregivers of children with febrile seizures, alleviate their anxiety, reduce the recurrence rate of febrile seizures in children, and improve caregiver satisfaction. It is worthy of clinical promotion and application.
文摘Objectives:Healthcare students experience significant stress due to their rigorous graduate school curricula. These levels of stress are associated with higher risks of depression,self-harm,and exhaustion.Coping interventions have been shown to help students develop healthy stress coping strategies. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the diverse array of coping interventions and what characteristics of coping interventions were most effective at decreasing stress among healthcare students. Methods:Any intervention designed to address coping for academic stress was included among medical, dental, nursing, physician assistant, allied health,veterinary,psychology,etc.students.A comprehensive literature search was completed to include multiple databases,Ancestry, and hand-searching from EBSCO and Google Scholar articles.A final total of 17 studies were included.Standardized mean difference effect sizes(ES)were synthesized across studies using a random-effects model in the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Software for changes in coping levels in healthcare students.Moderator analyses were performed to explore the study, intervention, and participants’characteristics. The risk of bias was assessed by RoB2 and ROBINS-I.Results:Coping interventions significantly reduced stress outcomes among healthcare students(d=0.74;95%CI[0.48–1.01],95%PI[−0.41–1.90],p<0.001,Q=228.49,I^(2)=93.0%,T=0.52,T^(2)=0.28,p<0.001).Moderator analysis showed that interventions with stress education, established professional guidance, and fewer hours led to better stress management outcomes. Conclusions:This study demonstrates that coping interventions produce an overall moderate-to-large effect on stress reduction.Future research investigating coping interventions on academic and long-term outcomes would be beneficial.
文摘BACKGROUND Low anterior resection syndrome(LARS)is a prevalent and debilitating complication following sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer.Evidence-based interventions for the concurrent psychological burden are limited.Electroacupuncture has been proposed as a potential adjunctive therapy, but its psychological benefits remain inadequately studied.AIM To investigate the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture on emotional recovery and gastrointestinal function in patients with moderate to severe LARS,and to explore its potential advantages in psychologically vulnerable subgroups.METHODS We conducted a retrospective, controlled study involving 100 patients with moderate to severe LARS(LARS score≥21)treated at two tertiary hospitals in China between January 2022 and December 2024.Patients received either standard postoperative care alone(n=50)or in combination with a standardized 4-week electroacupuncture protocol(n=50).Psychological and functional outcomes were assessed using validated instruments including Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS),Body Image Scale(BIS),General Self-Efficacy Scale,Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS),LARS score, and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 at four time points. The primary endpoint was emotional remission, defined as a≥3-point reduction in HADS-Anxiety subscale(HADS-A).Analyses included repeated-measures comparisons,Kaplan-Meier survival curves,Cox regression models, and subgroup-interaction testing.RESULTS At baseline, demographic, surgical, and psychosocial characteristics were comparable among groups.By week 4,patients receiving electroacupuncture demonstrated significantly greater reductions in anxiety(HADS-A:4.8±2.6 vs 7.3±3.0;P<0.001),depression,and body-image disturbance(BIS:8.7±3.6 vs 11.9±4.2;P<0.001),alongside enhanced coping capacity(Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced),perceived social support(PSSS),and bowel function(LARS score).Emotional remission-defined as a≥3-point HADS-A reduction-was achieved more rapidly in the electroacupuncture group,as confirmed by Kaplan-Meier analysis(log-rank P<0.001;odds ratio=4.7).Multivariate Cox regression identified higher baseline LARS and BIS scores as independent predictors of delayed emotional recovery.Subgroup analyses revealed significantly amplified treatment benefits in patients with high baseline anxiety(HADS-A≥8),elevated body-image disturbance(BIS≥12),or low perceived social support(PSSS<60),with consistent interaction effects(P for interaction<0.05 across subgroups).CONCLUSION Electroacupuncture may accelerate emotional recovery and improve functional and psychosocial outcomes in patients with LARS.Its integration into postoperative care may offer particular benefits for psychologically vulnerable subgroups.

文摘Background:Childhood leukemia,a malignant proliferative disorder of the hematopoietic system and the most common childhood cancer, poses a significant threat to the lives and health of affected children. For parents,a leukemia diagnosis in their child is a profoundly traumatic event. As primary caregivers, they endure immense psychological distress and caregiving stress throughout the prolonged and demanding treatment process, which can adversely affect their own well-being and caregiving capacity. However, the psychological mechanisms, such as the role of mindfulness, linking caregiver stress to parental coping strategies remain underexplored, and evidence-based interventions to support these parents are needed. Methods:In Study 1,we administered a cross-sectional survey to 242 parents of children with leukemia who were hospitalized at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University between January and August 2024.Participants completed measures assessing caregiver burden, mindful attention awareness, and parental coping style. In Study 2,we further evaluated the effects of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction(MBSR)intervention. Results:The results of Study 1 revealed:(1)The caregiving stress significantly and negatively predicted coping style(β=−1.18,95%CI[−2.18,−0.18],p<0.01).(2)Caregiving stress also significantly and negatively predicted mindfulness(β=−1.90,95%CI[−2.43,−1.38],p<0.01).(3)Conversely,mindfulness significantly and positively predicted coping style(β=0.85,95%CI[0.62,1.07],p<0.01).These findings suggest that mindfulness mediates the relationship between caregiver burden and coping style. In Study 2,the experimental group showed a significant decrease in caregiver stress post-intervention(t=2.24,p<0.05),a significant increase in mindfulness(t=−4.61,p<0.001),and a significant improvement in coping style(t=−2.36,p<0.01).No significant changes were observed in the control group. Conclusion:MBSR can effectively enhance mindfulness and promote adaptive coping strategies, while reducing caregiver burden among parents of children with leukemia.
