Fenton/Fenton-like reactions have gained popularity for their remarkable proficiency in decomposing organic pollutants,especially when enhanced by reductants addition for accel-erating the Fe2+regeneration.Nevertheless,these works predominantly centered on the formation and utilization of hydroxyl radicals(•OH)in the process,neglecting the evolution of oxidant and reductant due to the difficulty in the simultaneous determination of these two components.By employing the quenching-iodometric method,we could simultaneously determine the concentrations of HSO_(3)-and peroxydisulfate(PDS).This method first employed an excess of peroxymonosulfate(PMS)to effectively quench HSO_(3)-,and then used the iodometric spectrophotometry to simultaneously determine the concentrations of PMS and PDS in the reaction system.Finally,through precise stoichiometric relationships,we could accurately calculate the concentration of HSO_(3)-.Based on this method,we achieved concentration measurements that,upon linear fitting,yielded a correlation coefficient(R^(2))surpassing 0.99,unequivocally affirming the method’s accuracy and trustworthiness.In this work,an innovation approach for determining the concentrations of HSO_(3)-(reductant)and PDS(oxidant)was explored.Additionally,the resilience of the method was verified across different pH levels and in the presence of diverse impurity ions.The results ensured precise concentration measure-ments in the real wastewater.This method was characterized by its simplicity,rapid analysis,and environmental friendliness,offering a newanalytical strategy for the determination of PDS and HSO_(3)-in environmental samples.The method enables more meticulous monitoring of chemical usage in water treatment,facilitating optimized dosing strategies and assessments of reductant-enhanced Fenton or Fenton-like system in water purification. 展开更多

The accumulation of^(222)Rn and^(220)Rn progeny in poorly ventilated environments poses the risk of natural radiation exposure to the public.A previous study indicated that satisfactory results in determining the^(222)Rn and^(220)Rn progeny concentrations by measuring the total alpha counts at five time intervals within 560 min should be expected only in the case of high progeny concentrations in air.To complete the measurement within a relatively short period and adapt it for simultaneous measurements at comparatively lower^(222)Rn and^(220)Rn progeny concentrations,a novel mathematical model was proposed based on the radioactive decay law.This model employs a nonlinear fitting method to distinguish nuclides with overlapping spectra by utilizing the alpha particle counts of non-overlapping spectra within consecutive measurement cycles to obtain the concentrations of^(222)Rn and^(220)Rn progeny in air.Several verification experiments were conducted using an alpha spectrometer.The experimental results demonstrate that the concentrations of^(222)Rn and^(220)Rn progeny calculated by the new method align more closely with the actual circumstances than those calculated by the total count method,and their relative uncertainties are all within±16%.Furthermore,the measurement time was reduced to 90 min,representing an acceleration of 84%.The improved capability of the new method in distinguishing alpha particles with similar energies emitted from ^(218)Po and^(212)Bi,both approximately 6 MeV,contributed to realizing more accurate results.The proposed method has the potential advantage of measuring relatively low concentrations of^(222)Rn and^(220)Rn progeny in air more quickly via air filtration. 展开更多

To provide advanced diagnostic techniques for diagnosing the outlet temperature distribution and species concentrations of future advanced combustors,this study focuses on a dual-swirl single-dome rectangular combustor.Through the integration of multiple diagnostics,simultaneous measurement of outlet temperature distribution and species concentrations was achieved.The study validates the engineering applicability of these simultaneous measurements using tungsten-rhenium(W-Re)thermocouples and Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering(CARS),CARS and Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy(TDLAS),as well as Gas Analysis(GA)and Mass Spectrometry(MS).The results demonstrate that measurements by thermocouples and CARS exhibit good consistency and repeatability,with a relative deviation of less than 4%,fully meeting the requirements of engineering experiments.The spatial distribution reconstruction results of TDLAS can reflect the temperature distribution characteristics at the combustor outlet.Temperature comparison between TDLAS and CARS at single-point positions shows consistent results,with a relative deviation of less than 11%and 7%under both conditions,respectively.Simultaneous measurements by integrating GA and MS show high engineering applicability for the first time,meeting the requirements for measuring both inorganic species and free radicals at the combustor outlet.Under C_(1)condition,the relative deviations of four key species(Unburned Hydrocarbon(UHC),NO,O_(2),and CO_(2))remain within 2%,while that of NO_(2)is slightly higher at approximately 8%.Under C_(2)condition,the overall deviations increase for most species,with only O_(2)and CO_(2)maintaining relatively low deviations.The primary species of UHCs at the combustor outlet under both conditions are small molecular hydrocarbons(C_(3)-C_(8))and RO_(2)radicals,accounting for over 90%of total UHC.Specifically,RO_(2)species(R is C_(1)-C_(2)alkyl groups)are the predominant species,accounting for 74.3%and 82.1%of total RO_(2)under both conditions,respectively.These integrated diagnostic methods for temperature and species concentrations at the combustor outlet serve as a crucial reference for its engineering applications. 展开更多

Precise and non-destructive approach for identifying the real concentration based on cured cemented paste backfill using hyperspectral imaging

Cemented paste backfill(CPB)is a technology that achieves safe mining by filling the goaf with waste rocks,tailings,and other materials.It is an inevitable choice to deal with the development of deep and highly difficult mines and meet the requirements of environmental protection and safety regulations.It promotes the development of a circular economy in mines through the development of lowgrade resources and the resource utilization of waste,and extends the service life of mines.The mass concentration of solid content(abbreviated as“concentration”)is a critical parameter for CPB.However,discrepancies often arise between the on-site measurements and the pre-designed values due to factors such as groundwater inflow and segregation within the goaf,which cannot be evaluated after the solidification of CPB.This paper innovatively provides an in-situ non-destructive approach to identify the real concentration of CPB after curing for certain days using hyperspectral imaging(HSI)technology.Initially,the spectral variation patterns under different concentration conditions were investigated through hyperspectral scanning experiments on CPB samples.The results demonstrate that as the CPB concentration increases from 61wt%to 73wt%,the overall spectral reflectance gradually increases,with two distinct absorption peaks observed at 1407 and 1917 nm.Notably,the reflectance at 1407 nm exhibited a strong linear relationship with the concentration.Subsequently,the K-nearest neighbors(KNN)and support vector machine(SVM)algorithms were employed to classify and identify different concentrations.The study revealed that,with the KNN algorithm,the highest accuracy was achieved when K(number of nearest neighbors)was 1,although this resulted in overfitting.When K=3,the model displayed the optimal balance between accuracy and stability,with an accuracy of 95.03%.In the SVM algorithm,the highest accuracy of 98.24%was attained with parameters C(regularization parameter)=200 and Gamma(kernel coefficient)=10.A comparative analysis of precision,accuracy,and recall further highlighted that the SVM provided superior stability and precision for identifying CPB concentration.Thus,HSI technology offers an effective solution for the in-situ,non-destructive monitoring of CPB concentration,presenting a promising approach for optimizing and controlling CPB characteristic parameters. 展开更多

An effective deep-learning prediction of Arctic sea-ice concentration based on the U-Net model

Current shipping,tourism,and resource development requirements call for more accurate predictions of the Arctic sea-ice concentration(SIC).However,due to the complex physical processes involved,predicting the spatiotemporal distribution of Arctic SIC is more challenging than predicting its total extent.In this study,spatiotemporal prediction models for monthly Arctic SIC at 1-to 3-month leads are developed based on U-Net-an effective convolutional deep-learning approach.Based on explicit Arctic sea-ice-atmosphere interactions,11 variables associated with Arctic sea-ice variations are selected as predictors,including observed Arctic SIC,atmospheric,oceanic,and heat flux variables at 1-to 3-month leads.The prediction skills for the monthly Arctic SIC of the test set(from January 2018 to December 2022)are evaluated by examining the mean absolute error(MAE)and binary accuracy(BA).Results showed that the U-Net model had lower MAE and higher BA for Arctic SIC compared to two dynamic climate prediction systems(CFSv2 and NorCPM).By analyzing the relative importance of each predictor,the prediction accuracy relies more on the SIC at the 1-month lead,but on the surface net solar radiation flux at 2-to 3-month leads.However,dynamic models show limited prediction skills for surface net solar radiation flux and other physical processes,especially in autumn.Therefore,the U-Net model can be used to capture the connections among these key physical processes associated with Arctic sea ice and thus offers a significant advantage in predicting Arctic SIC. 展开更多

Diabetes is a widespread disease affecting millions of people,making it one of the leading causes of death in the world.It is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease and end-stage renal disease.Despite advancements in treatment,including insulin therapy and glucose monitoring devices,diabetes continues to significantly impact quality of life and current modalities do not reverse the end-organ damage associated with its progression.While traditionally indicated for type 1 diabetes,recent clinical practice refinements have made pancreas transplants available to select type 2 diabetics meeting specific criteria.These transplants are usually a part of a simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplant.However,although less frequently performed,transplants of pancreas alone or pancreas after kidney transplant are still available.For selected diabetic patients,pancreas transplants offer significant survival benefits and the improvement of cardiovascular and metabolic complications;however,they are not without risks.Complications such as bleeding,vascular thrombosis,infection,organ leak,and rejection are possible.Another challenge to pancreas transplantation is the decreasing number of procedures being performed due to decline in the volume of available highquality allografts and resource constraints of transplant centers.Advancements in monitoring and treatment of diabetes are contributing to the decline in pancreas transplants nowadays. 展开更多

Increased grain yield(GY) and grain protein concentration(GPC) are the two main targets of efforts to improve wheat(Triticum aestivum L.) production in the North China Plain(NCP). We conducted a three-year field experiment in the 2014–2017 winter wheat growing seasons to compare the effects of conventional irrigation practice(CI) and micro-sprinkling irrigation combined with nitrogen(N) fertilizer(MSI) on GY, GPC, and protein yield(PY). Across the three years, GY, GPC, and PY increased by 10.5%–16.7%, 5.4%–8.0%, and 18.8%–24.6%, respectively, under MSI relative to CI. The higher GY under MSI was due primarily to increased thousand-kernel weight(TKW). The chlorophyll content of leaves was higher under MSI during the mid–late grain filling period, increasing the contribution of post-anthesis dry matter accumulation to GY, with consequent increases in total dry matter accumulation and harvest index compared to CI. During the mid–late grain filling period, the canopy temperature was markedly lower and the relative humidity was higher under MSI than under CI. The duration and rate of filling during the mid–late grain filling period were also higher under MSI than CI, resulting in higher TKW. MSI increased the contribution of post-anthesis N accumulation to grain N but reduced the pre-anthesis remobilization of N in leaves, the primary site of photosynthetic activity, possibly helping maintain photosynthate production in leaves during grain filling. Total N at maturity was higher under MSI than CI,although there was little difference in N harvest index. The higher GPC under MSI than under CI was due to a larger increase in grain N accumulation than in GY. Overall, MSI simultaneously increased both GY and GPC in winter wheat grown in the NCP. 展开更多

The integration of surface filtration and catalytic decomposition functions in catalytic bags enables the synergistic removal of multiple pollutants(such as dust,nitrogen oxide,acid gases,and dioxins)in a single reactor,thus effectively reducing the cost and operational difficulties associated with flue gas treatment.In this study,Mn-Ce-Sm-Sn(MCSS)catalysts were prepared and loaded onto hightemperature resistant polyimide(P84)filter through ultrasonic impregnation to create composite catalytic filter.The results demonstrate that the NO conversion rates of the composite catalytic filter consistently achieve above 95%within the temperature range of 160-260℃,with a chlorobenzene T_(90)value of 230℃.The ultrasonic impregnation method effectively loaded the catalyst onto the filter,ensuring high dispersion both on the surface and inside the filter.This increased exposure of catalyst active sites enhances the catalytic activity of the composite catalytic filter.Additionally,increasing the catalyst loading leads to a gradual decrease in permeability,an increase in pressure drops and the long residence time of the flue gas,thereby improving catalytic activity.Compared to ordinary impregnation methods,ultrasonic impregnation improves the bonding strength between the catalyst and filter,as well as the permeability of the composite catalytic filter under the same loading conditions.Overall,this study presents a novel approach to prepare composite catalytic filter for the simultaneous removal of NO and chlorobenzene at low temperatures. 展开更多

In this paper,a novel method is proposed and employed to design a single diffractive optical element(DOE) for implementing spectrum-splitting and beam-concentration(SSBC) functions simultaneously.We develop an optimization algorithm,through which the SSBC DOE can be optimized within an arbitrary thickness range according to the limitations of modern photolithography technology.Theoretical simulation results reveal that the designed SSBC DOE has a high optical focusing efficiency.It is expected that the designed SSBC DOE should have practical applications in high-efficiency solar cell systems. 展开更多

Identification of the most appropriate chemically extractable pool for evaluating Cd and Pb availability remains elusive,hindering accurate assessment on environmental risks and effectiveness of remediation strategies.This study evaluated the feasibility of European Community Bureau of Reference(BCR)sequential extraction,Ca(NO_(3))_(2)extraction,and water extraction on assessing Cd and Pb availability in agricultural soil amended with slaked lime,magnesium hydroxide,corn stover biochar,and calcium dihydrogen phosphate.Moreover,the enriched isotope tracing technique(^(112)Cd and^(206)Pb)was employed to evaluate the aging process of newly introduced Cd and Pbwithin 56 days’incubation.Results demonstrated that extractable pools by BCR and Ca(NO_(3))_(2)extraction were little impacted by amendments and showed little correlation with soil pH.This is notable because soil pH is closely linked to metal availability,indicating these extraction methods may not adequately reflect metal availability.Conversely,water-soluble concentrations of Cd and Pb were markedly influenced by amendments and exhibited strong correlations with pH(Pearson’s r:-0.908 to-0.825,P<0.001),suggesting water extraction as a more sensitive approach.Furthermore,newly introduced metals underwent a more evident aging process as demonstrated by acid-soluble and water-soluble pools.Additionally,water-soluble concentrations of essential metals were impacted by soil amendments,raising caution on their potential effects on plant growth.These findings suggest water extraction as a promising and attractive method to evaluate Cd and Pb availability,which will help provide assessment guidance for environmental risks caused by heavy metals and develop efficient remediation strategies. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Ulcerative colitis(UC)is a chronic inflammatory condition requiring continuous treatment and monitoring.There is limited pharmacokinetic data on vedolizumab during maintenance therapy and the effect of thiopurines on vedolizumab trough concentrations is unknown.AIM To investigate the exposure-response relationship of vedolizumab and the impact of thiopurine withdrawal in UC patients who have achieved sustained clinical and endoscopic remission during maintenance therapy.METHODS This is a post-hoc analysis of prospective randomized clinical trial(VIEWS)involving UC patients across 8 centers in Australia from 2018 to 2022.Patients in clinical and endoscopic remission were randomized to continue or withdraw thiopurine while receiving vedolizumab.We evaluated vedolizumab serum trough concentrations,presence of anti-vedolizumab antibodies,and clinical outcomes over 48 weeks to assess exposure-response asso-ciation and impact of thiopurine withdrawal.RESULTS There were 62 UC participants with mean age of 43.4 years and 42%were females.All participants received vedolizumab as maintenance therapy with 67.7%withdrew thiopurine.Vedolizumab serum trough concentrations remained stable over 48 weeks regardless of thiopurine use,with no anti-vedolizumab antibodies detected.Pa-tients with clinical remission had higher trough concentrations at week 48.In quartile analysis,a threshold of>11.3μg/mL was associated with sustained clinical remission,showing a sensitivity of 82.4%,specificity of 60.0%,and an area of receiver operating characteristic of 0.71(95%CI:0.49-0.93).Patients discontinuing thiopurine required higher vedolizumab concentrations for achieving remission.CONCLUSION A positive exposure-response relationship between vedolizumab trough concentrations and UC outcomes suggests that monitoring drug levels may be beneficial.While thiopurine did not influence vedolizumab levels,its with-drawal may necessitate higher vedolizumab trough concentrations to maintain remission. 展开更多

Assessing the behaviour and concentration of waste pollutants deposited between two parallel plates is essential for effective environmental management.Determining the effectiveness of treatment methods in reducing pollution scales is made easier by analysing waste discharge concentrations.The waste discharge concentration analysis is useful for assessing how effectively wastewater treatment techniques reduce pollution levels.This study aims to explore the Casson micropolar fluid flow through two parallel plates with the influence of pollutant concentration and thermophoretic particle deposition.To explore the mass and heat transport features,thermophoretic particle deposition and thermal radiation are considered.The governing equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations with the help of suitable similarity transformations.The Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg’s fourthfifth order technique and shooting procedure are used to solve the reduced set of equations and boundary conditions.The integration of a neural network model based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm serves to improve the accuracy of predictions and optimize the analysis of parameters.Graphical outcomes are displayed to analyze the characteristics of the relevant dimensionless parameters in the current problem.Results reveal that concentration upsurges as the micropolar parameter increases.The concentration reduces with an upsurge in the thermophoretic parameter.An upsurge in the external pollutant source variation and the local pollutant external source parameters enhances mass transport.The surface drag force declines for improved values of porosity and micropolar parameters. 展开更多

Caffeine has been shown to reduce various health risks, such as diabetes, obesity, and vascular diseases, and it may provide health benefits when consumed in moderate amounts, such as three to four cups per day. However, caffeine may exhibit harmful effects depending on the dose. Although the health benefits and disadvantages of caffeine intake have been studied, the effects of caffeine’s aroma have hardly been studied. This study aimed to examine the impact of caffeine scent on brain activity during cognitive tasks using electroencephalography (EEG). This study included 30 healthy young adults. We investigated cerebral activity using EEG during the concentration tasks. Participants performed tasks under pre- and post-conditions, including drinking coffee, smelling coffee, or drinking water. The number of correct responses and reaction times were calculated for each task, and mean power levels were analyzed. A linear mixed model was applied with “performance”, “ROI”, and “wave band” to examine the effects of conditions and timing. Significant differences were observed in left-frontal θ power (coffee α power (coffee P θ between pre- and post-task during water conditions (pre α on the frontal lobe and higher θ are associated with improved arousal and cognitive functions. Drinking coffee reduced α power, whereas smelling coffee or drinking water increased θ power. Therefore, drinking coffee, smelling coffee, and drinking water may affect cerebral activities and enhance cognitive performance. 展开更多

The accuracy of thermal analysis measurements is critical to analyze material properties correctly,making the improvement of measurement precision and proper uncertainty analysis of test results absolutely essential.As a primary thermal analysis instrument,the simultaneous thermal analyzer(STA)has unique advantages,which combines the functionalities of thermogravimetric(TG)analyzersand differential scanning calorimeters(DSC).However,the absence of standard quality control procedures has resulted in poor measurement reproducibility,low accuracy,and inadequate traceability of analytical results.This study utilized a multi-point temperature calibration method based on national certified reference materials to reduce instrument temperature indication errors.On this basis,we innovatively established a comprehensive quality control system encompassing laboratory environmental control,standard method selection,instrument performance verification,reference material traceability,and uncertainty analysis,thereby achieving standardized operational procedures for thermal analysis measurement.Taking the"determination of initial melting temperature of unknown substances"as a representative case study,a component resolution model for thermal analysis test uncertainty was developed.Through systematic analysis of both the reference material-introduced component and measurement repeatability component,complete traceability of test results was achieved.This approach ensures data validity and enhances the accuracy of test results.This provides crucial technical support and practical reference for the standardization of thermal analysis measurement procedure and assessment of result reliability. 展开更多

Fibers with deformation-triggered responses are essential for smart textiles and wearable electronics.Here,smart core-shell elastomer fibers with a conductive core and a liquid crystal elastomer shell showing simultaneous resistance and color responses are designed and prepared.The conductive core is consisted of interconnected liquid metal nanodroplets dispersed in a polymer matrix and the elastomer shell is made of cholesteric liquid crystals.When stretched,the fiber resistance increases as the interconnected pathways of liquid metal nanodroplets along the fiber axis become narrower,and the selective reflection color from the fiber surface blueshifts since the cholesteric pitch decreases.The smart elastomer fibers could be woven into smart textiles and respond to various mechanical deformations,including stretching,bending,compression and twisting.The average resistance change is 51%under 100%strain and its variation is smaller than 4%over 500 cycles,showing remarkable fatigue resistance.The simultaneous resistance and color responses to mechanical deformations make the fibers attractive for broad applications,such as flexible electronics. 展开更多

Arsenic and cadmium contamination frequently coexist in the real environment.However it remains a challenge for their simultaneous removal due to their distinct physicochemica properties at low cost.To this end,a cost-effective magnetic biochar adsorbent (ITBNa800was prepared using biomass waste and iron tailings slag.This composite adsorbent exhibits excellent performance in the simultaneous removal of aqueous As(Ⅴ) and Cd(Ⅱ) even at high concentrations with removal efficiencies of up to 99.98%and 96.04%,respectively.Electro static action,precipitation,and complexation were adsorption mechanisms.As(Ⅴ) and Cd(Ⅱ were synergistic and competitive adsorption.As(Ⅴ) removal was mainly due to physical and chemical adsorption,and 42.40%-58.59%of As(Ⅴ) had been converted to As(Ⅲ ).Cd(Ⅱ) re moval was mainly due to chemical adsorption.Iron oxide and aluminum oxide in ITBNa800were the keys to As(Ⅴ),As(Ⅲ ),and Cd(Ⅱ) adsorption.DFT calculations revealed iron oxide complex As(Ⅴ),As(Ⅲ ),and Cd(Ⅱ) molecular clusters through bidentate binuclear,bidentate binuclear,and monodentate binuclear pathways,respectively.Aluminum oxide complex Cd(Ⅱ) molecular cluster through a bidentate mononuclear pathway.We hope the ITBNa800adsorbent and its involved mechanism could offer inspiration in the simultaneous treat ment of As and Cd pollution. 展开更多
