Superplastic deformation mechanisms of coarse-grained rolled Mg-4Y-3RE magnesium alloy

The Mg-4Y-3RE(WE43)magnesium alloy possesses significant advantages such as high specific strength,excellent shock absorption,strong electromagnetic shielding capabilities and recyclability.However,its close-packed hexagonal structure leads to poor plasticity at room temperature,which limits its broader engineering applications.Therefore,superplastic forming at high temperatures is used to manufacture the components from this alloy.This study conducted tensile tests on hot-rolled WE43 rare-earth magnesium alloy with coarse grains at various temperatures and strain rates.The high-temperature superplastic properties were characterized,revealing the intrinsic mechanisms of thermal deformation behavior.The results indicate that the best superplasticity is achieved at 460℃.This is attributed to the smallest grain size,the weakest texture,and the relatively uniform distribution of the second phase at this temperature.The influence of strain rate on elongation at temperatures among 440℃∼500℃is not significant as the impact of strain rate is multifaceted.Meanwhile,the elongation can reach up to 367.7±3.7%at a strain rate of 0.01s^(−1),which exhibits the high strain rate superplasticity(HSRS).Under these conditions,the deformation of coarse-grained WE43 rare-earth magnesium alloy is controlled by grain boundary sliding(GBS)and solute drag dislocation creep.Furthermore,the GBS involves deformation coordination mechanisms such as grain boundary diffusion,lattice diffusion,dislocation climbing,and dynamic recrystallization accommodation mechanisms. 展开更多

Coarse grained WC-9Co cemented carbides with 0-1.0% TaC(mass fraction) were fabricated by HIP-sintering and gas quenching. The effects of TaC on the microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDS), X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and mechanical properties tests. The results show that the maximum values of hardness and strength are HV 1124 and 2466 MPa respectively when 0.4% TaC is added. When the content of TaC is more than 0.6%, the grain size of WC is no longer affected by the amount of TaC, and(W,Ta)C occurs as well. Moreover, the strength and fracture toughness increase and the(Ta+W) content decreases with the increase of TaC content. The dependence of(Ta+W) content on the mechanical properties indicates that(Ta+W) content in Co should be decreased as low as possible to improve the mechanical properties of coarse grained WC-TaC-9Co cemented carbides with the microstructure of WC+γ two phase regions. 展开更多

This study investigates the differences in microstructural control between cryogenic forging combined with pre-deformation(PCF)and traditional thermal forging(TTF)for 7050 aluminum forgings intended for aerospace applications.The PCF process,utilizing cryogenic deformation,significantly refines the coarse grains at the surface of the forgings,resulting in a finer and more uniform microstructure,thereby effectively addressing the issue of surface coarse grains associated with traditional methods.The findings indicate that the PCF process can accumulate higher stored energy,facilitating static recrystallization(SRX)during subsequent heat treatment and enhancing the microstructural uniformity.Utilizing various analytical techniques,including optical microscopy(OM),electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD),and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).This study reveals the superiority of the PCF process in terms of strain accumulation,dislocation density,and grain refinement.In conclusion,this method offers advantages in enhancing the performance and microstructural uniformity of 7050 aluminum forgings,presenting new opportunities for applications in the aluminum forging industry. 展开更多

Hot compression experiments were conducted under conditions of deformation temperatures ranging from 950 to 1150℃,strain rates of 0.001-10 s^(-1),and deformation degrees ranging from 20%to 80%.The hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of millimeter-grade coarse grains(MCGs)in the as-cast Ti-6Cr-5Mo-5V-4Al(Ti-6554)alloy were studied,and a hot processing map was established.Under compression along the rolling direction(RD),continuous dynamic recrystallization(CDRX)ensues due to the progressive rotation of subgrains within the MCGs.Along the transverse direction(TD),discontinuous dynamic recrystallization(DDRX)resulting from grain boundary bulging or bridging,occurs on the boundaries of the MCGs.With decreasing strain rate,increasing temperature,and higher deformation degree,dynamic recrystallization becomes more pronounced,resulting in a reduction in the original average grain size.The optimal processing parameters fall within a temperature range of 1050-1150℃,a strain rate of 0.01 s^(-1),and a deformation degree between 40%and 60%. 展开更多

After the hot deformation sample of Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy was treated by solid solution in theα+βtwo-phase region,the coarseβgrains that often appeared in theβsingle phase region were observed in the local region,indicating that the abnormal grain growth occurred in the local microstructural region,and the macrostructure also showed abnormally coarse grains(ACGs).The dynamic recrystallization(DRX)behavior of Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al titanium alloy was systematically investigated through hot compression tests on the Gleeble-3800 system.The DRX model ofβgrains was established,and the quantitative correlation between DRX characteristics and the appearance of ACG was clarified.Based on these results,a numerical simulation platform was developed to realize the visual prediction of ACG distribution.The results show that the increase of deformation temperature and the decrease of strain rate both contribute to a significant increase in the grain size(d_(DRX)))and volume fraction(X_(DRX))of DRXed grains.However,the proper X_(DRX)and smaller d_(DRX))at low deformation temperature and high strain rate make the macro and microstructure show ACGs after solid solution.Interestingly,if the DRX degree is excessive or insufficient,ACGs cannot be produced,indicating that ACGs are solid solution products based on the appropriate DRX degree.According to the flow curves and statistical results of microstructure,the quantitative model of DRX kinetics and DRX grain size model were constructed,and the quantitative criterion model that is related to the formation of ACG with grain size(d_(DRX)))and volume fraction(X_(DRX))of DRXed grains as the key parameters was established,i.e.,d_(DRX)≤2.60µm,72.5%≤X_(DRX)≤87.9%.By integrating the subroutine of coarse grain criterion,the isothermal compression process of cylindrical samples and the actual die forging process of H-shaped parts were simulated by DEFORM-3D software of finite element(FE),respectively,and the visual prediction of the distribution of macroscopic ACGs was realized.There is a good consistency between the tested results and the simulated results,indicating a strong correlation between macroscopic ACGs and microscopic DRX. 展开更多

The austenite grain growth behavior in a simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone during thermal cycling was investigated via in situ observation. Austenite grains nucleated at ferrite grain boundaries and then grew in different directions through movement of grain boundaries into the ferrite phase. Subsequently, the adjacent austenite grains impinged against each other during the α→γtransformation. After the α→γ transformation, austenite grains coarsened via the coalescence of small grains and via boundary migration between grains. The growth process of austenite grains was a continuous process during heating, isothermal holding, and cooling in simulated thermal cycling. Abundant finely dispersed nanoscale TiN particles in a steel specimen containing 0.012wt% Ti effectively retarded the grain boundary migration, which resulted in refined austenite grains. When the Ti concentration in the steel was increased, the number of TiN particles de- creased and their size coarsened. The big particles were not effective in pinning the austenite grain boundary movement and resulted in coarse austenite grains. 展开更多

The microstructural features and grain refinement in the coarse-grained region of the heat-affected zone in low-carbon high-strength microalloyed steels were investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscattering dif- fraction. The coarse-grained region of the heat-affected zone consists of predominantly bainite and a small proportion of acicular ferrite. Bainite packets are separated by high angle boundaries. Acicular ferrite laths or plates in the coarse-grained region of the heat-affected zone formed prior to bainite packets partition austenite grains into many smaller and separate areas, resulting in fine-grained mixed microstruc- tures. Electron backscattefing diffraction analysis indicates that the average crystallographic grain size of the coarse-grained region of the heat-affected zone reaches 6-9 μm, much smaller than that of anstanite grains. 展开更多

Practical assessment of subgrade settlement induced by train operation requires developing suitable models capable of describing permanent deformation characteristics of subgrade filling under repeated dynamic loading.In this paper,repeated load triaxial tests were performed on coarse-grained soil(CGS),and the axial permanent strain of CGS under different confining pressures and dynamic stress amplitudes was analysed.Permanent deformation behaviors of CGS were categorized based on the variation trend of permanent strain rate with accumulated permanent strain and the shakedown theory.A prediction model of permanent deformation considering stress state and number of load cycles was established,and the ranges of parameters for different types of dynamic behaviors were also divided.The results indicated that the variational trend of permanent strain rate with accumulated permanent strain can be used as a basis for classifying dynamic behaviors of CGS.The stress state(confining pressure and dynamic stress amplitude)has significant effects on the permanent strain rate.The accumulative characteristics of permanent deformation of CGS with the number of load cycles can be described by a power function,and the model parameters can reflect the influence of confining pressure and dynamic stress amplitude.The study’s results could help deepen understanding of the permanent deformation characteristics of CGS. 展开更多

Effects of Zirconium on the chemical component and size distribution of Ti-bearing inclusions, favored the grain refinement of the welding reduced, coarse-grained heat affected zone (CGHAZ) with enhanced impact toughness in Ti-killed steels, which were examined based on experimental observations and thermodynamic calculations. It indicated that the chemical constituents of inclusions gradually varied from the TiO oxide to the Ti-O+Zr-O compound oxide and a single phase of the ZrO2 oxide, as the Zr content increased from zero to 0.0100%. A trace of Zr (0.0030%-0.0080%, depending on the oxygen content in liquid steel) provided a large amount of nucleating core for Ti oxide because of the larger specific density of ZrO2 oxide, and produced a small size distribution of the inclusions favorable for acicular ferrite transformation with a high nucleation rate in the CGHAZ, and a high volume fraction of acicular ferrite was obtained in the CGHAZ, with enhanced impact toughness. Otherwise, a high content of Zr (-0.0100%) produced a single phase Zr02, which was impotent to nucleate acicular ferrite, and a microstructure composed of ferrite side plate and grain boundary ferrite developed in the CGHAZ. The molybdenum-nickel deposits in Shuidong District of Nayong County (Guizhou Province, Southwest China) are found mainly in black shale series of Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation, which is another Mo-Ni-rich region besides Zunyi District (Guizhou province). Our systematic study on the Mo-Ni deposits in Tangjiaba of Nayong reveals that layered coarse-grained limestones, spherical beaded limestones concretions are hosted at the lower seam of the Mo-Ni deposits. Its strong negative carbon isotope anomaly (the carbon isotope value of the coarse-grained limestones varies from -2.148‰ to 8.223‰) is similar to that in the modern submarine black smoker chimney. The carbon in the coarse-grained limestones from black rock series of Nayong County might be deep source inorganic carbon. The seams, coarse-grained limestones, ore-bearing coarse-grained limestones and the roof and floor of the deposits are characterized by co-variation on the trace element spider diagram, showing good homology. The extraordinary enrichment of Ag, As and Sb resembles hydrothermal sedimentation. Pro-Earth's core elements Se is strongly enriched in Ni-Mo ore-bearing coarse-grained limestones. The ore-bearing rock series has an extremely low Th/U value (0.012-0.19); in the logU-logTh Cartesian Coordinates, the samples of the roof and floor of the deposits and ore-bearing coarse-grained limestones are found in the East Pacific tise; and the samples of coarse-grained limestones are found between the paleo-hydrothermal dedimentary area and the East Pacific tise. The chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns of the Ni-Mo deposits show LREE enrichment, Ce negative anomaly, and Eu negative anomaly (which is supposed to be influenced by the deep magmatic processes in an extensional environment) resembles the rare earth element distribution patterns of the fluid and its sediments in modern submarine hydrothermal system. It proves that coarse-grained limestones is characterized by typical hydrothermal limestones, being closely related with the genesis of Mo-Ni deposits in Nayong County, which provides new evidence for hydrothermal sedimentary genesis of Mo-Ni deposit and negative carbon anomaly in the basal Cambrian on a global scale. 展开更多

The coarse grained(CG)model implements the molecular dynamics simulation by simplifying atom properties and interaction between them.Despite losing certain detailed information,the CG model is still the first-thought option to study the large molecule in long time scale with less computing resource.The deep learning model mainly mimics the human studying process to handle the network input as the image to achieve a good classification and regression result.In this work,the TorchMD,a MD framework combining the CG model and deep learning model,is applied to study the protein folding process.In 3D collective variable(CV)space,the modified find density peaks algorithm is applied to cluster the conformations from the TorchMD CG simulation.The center conformation in different states is searched.And the boundary conformations between clusters are assigned.The string algorithm is applied to study the path between two states,which are compared with the end conformations from all atoms simulations.The result shows that the main phenomenon of protein folding with TorchMD CG model is the same as the all-atom simulations,but with a less simulating time scale.The workflow in this work provides another option to study the protein folding and other relative processes with the deep learning CG model. 展开更多

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Mott-Schottky analysis were carried out to evaluate the electrochemical behavior of the passive films formed on the surface of coarse-grained (CG), fine-grained (FG) and ultrafine-grained (UFG) 1050 A1 alloy (AA1050) samples in alkaline media (pH value of 8.0) based on a modification of point defect model (PDM). The EIS results revealed that the polarization resistance increased from about 22.71-120.33 kΩ cm2 for UFG sample when compared to CG sample (annealed sample). The semiconductor properties of the passive films formed on CG, FG and UFG AA1050 samples in the test solution were investigated by employing Mott-Schottky analysis in conjunction with PDM. The results indicated that donor densities were in the range of 2.19 × 1021-0.61 × 1021 cm-3 and decreased with grain refinement. Finally, all electrochemical tests showed that the electrochemical behavior of AA1050 alloy was improved by decreasing the grain size, mainly due to the formation of thicker and less defective oxide films. 展开更多

The dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and static recrystallization (SRX) behaviour of coarse-grained aus- tenite in a Nb-V-Ti microalloyed steel were studied by using a Gleeble thermomechanical simulator. Continuous and interrupted compression tests of coarse-grained austenite were performed in the temperature range of 1000-1 150 ℃ at a strain rate of 0. 1- 5 s 1. The peak and critical strains for the onset of DRX were identified with strain hardening rate analysis, and the ratio of critical strain to peak strain was found to be consistent with the one reported for fine- grained austenite. An equation of the time for 50% softening was proposed by considering the activation energy of steel without microalloying elements and the solute drag effect of microalloying elements. Strain-induced precipitation may not take place at the deformation temperature above 1000 ℃, which indicates that SRX of coarse-grained aus- tenite is mainly retarded by coarse grain size and Nb in solution during rough rolling. 展开更多

According to the comprehensive tests on the rising height of capillary water for seven kinds of differ- ent coarse grained soil by use of the method of standpipe, the relationship between the rising height of capillary water and time was obtained, and the influencing factors and rules were analyzed. The data of the steady rising height of capillary water were obtained, and the regression equation of coarse grained soil on steady height and physical indexes (effective grain dl0 and porosity n) was found. Compared with Hazen's and other expressions that could estimate the steady height of capillary water of coarse grained soil, the proposed method is satisfactory and the defects of the latter were pointed out. 展开更多

A metallurgical model for austenite coarsening in the coarse-grained heat-affected zone(CGHAZ)containing titanium nitride(TiN)precipitation was studied.Unlike traditional methods estimating pinning capability based on the precipitation size after welding,a proposed dissolution and coarsening model was applied to study the changes in TiN precipitation size and the associated pinning forces.The transmission electron microscope was used to analyze the size distribution of TiN particles before and after the welding thermal cycle.The size distribution showed a log-normal distribution before the thermal cycle.The prediction of post-thermal cycle size distributions with the proposed model was in agreement with the experimental results.Considering the short holding time at high temperature during welding,the thermodynamic stability conditions required for limiting grain size model cannot be achieved.A simple kinetic model for the prediction of austenite grain size in CGHAZ was established.Finally,the predicted austenite grain sizes agree better with experimental results than the conventional approach. 展开更多

An extra-low interstitial near alpha alloy Ti-3Al-2Zr-2Mo(wt%) was fabricated by hydrogenation and thermomechanical consolidation(TMC) of the coarse and spherical pre-alloyed powder with particle sizes of 60 to 270 μm. The coarse powder is a byproduct of pre-alloyed powder produced for selective laser and electron beam additive manufacturing. The TMC process involves powder compaction, fast sintering,in-situ dehydrogenation and an immediate hot extrusion to form a fully dense and fine-grained martensitic microstructure. Further dehydrogenation in vaccum at 700 °C converted the martensitic microstructure into an interwoven α/β microstructure which exhibited an improved yield strength, apparent necking and premature cracking at grain boundary α(α_(GB)) ribbons. A further annealing of 880 ℃/1 h/AC led to the formation of a fine-grained α/β_(t)composite structure, which achieved an enhance ultimate tensile strength of 835 MPa and excellent tensile ductility of 16.0%. Analysis of the deformation behavior of the alloy in different states revealed that the α/β_(t)composite structures brought about an enhanced strain hardening capability by heterogeneous deformation effect of hard β_(t)and soft α-laths, which inhibited the formation of microcracks and consequently improved the coordinated deformation. 展开更多

The two-dimensional detector hasthe ability to collect abundant diffraction information in seconds, thus it can be determined rapidly and accuratelywhether a series of diffraction spots come from the same grain.
