Tracking the variation of the algogenic organic matter(AOM) released during the proliferation of green algae and subsequent treatment processes is crucial for constructing and optimizing control strategies. In this study, the potential of the spectroscopic tool was fully explored as a surrogate of AOM upon the cultivation of green algae and subsequent coagulation/flocculation(C/F) treatment processes using ZrCl_4 and Al_2(SO_4)_3. Fluorescence excitation emission matrix coupled with parallel factor analysis(EEM-PARAFAC) identified the presence of three independent fluorescent components in AOM, including protein-like(C1), fulvic-like(C2) and humic-like components(C3). Size exclusion chromatography(SEC) revealed that C1 in AOM was composed of large-sized proteins and aromatic amino acids. The individual components exhibited their unique characteristics with respect to the dynamic changes. C1 showed the highest correlation with AOM concentrations(R^2= 0.843) upon the C/F processes. C1 could also be suggested as an optical predictor for the formation of trihalomethanes upon the C/F processes. This study sheds a light for the potential application of the protein-like component(C1) as a practical surrogate to track the evolution of AOM in water treatment or wastewater reclamation systems involving Chlorella vulgaris green algae. 展开更多

The pollution caused by wet weather overflow in urban drainage systems is a main factor causing blackening an odorization of urban rivers. The conventional overflow treatment based on coagulation/flocculation in terminal drainage systems requires relatively large space and long retention time demand that makes it not applicable in crowded urban drainage systems or under heavy rains.On-site coagulation/flocculation in terminal drainage pipes was proposed in this study which was aimed to transfer the coagulation/flocculation process to the inside of pipes at the terminal drainage system to save space and reduce the retention time of the coagulation/flocculation process. The optimized dose of chemicals was studied first which was 80 mg/L of coagulant and 0.8 mg/L of flocculant.Settling for only 5 min can remove most of the pollutants at 406.5 m of transmission distance. In addition, the relation of wet weather overflow rate and concentration of pollution load on the on-site coagulation/flocculation process was investigated, which indicated that high removal of pollutant was gained at a large range of flow velocity and pollutant concentration. Finally, the study confirmed electric neutralization, bridging, and net capture as the major mechanisms in this process, and further optimization was proposed. The proposed process can reduce much turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, and total phosphorous, but hardly remove soluble ammonia and organics. This work provides scientific guidance to address wet weather overflow in terminal drainage pipes. 展开更多

Water supply and sanitation demands are foreseen to face enormous challenges over the coming decades to meet the fast growing needs in a global perspective. Significant growth in the industry is predicted and membrane separation technologies have been identified as one of the possible solutions to meet future demands. Application and implementation of membrane technology is expected both in production of potable water as well as in treatment of wastewater. In potable water production membranes are substituting conventional separation technologies due to the superior performance, potential for less chemical use and sludge production, as well as the potential to fulfill hygienic barrier requirements. Membrane bio-reactor (MBR) technology is probably the membrane process which has had most success and has the best prospects for the future in wastewater treatment. Trends and developments indicate that this technology is becoming accepted and is rapidly becoming the best available technology for many wastewater treatment applications. A major drawback of MBR systems is membrane fouling. Studies have shown that fouling mitigation in MBR systems can potentially be done by coupling coagulation and flocculation to the process. 展开更多

The effects of the coagulation-flocculation process using polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and its aids on the removal of organics and nutrient in the combined sewage from Shanghai Zhuyuan First Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant are studied. The coagulant aids include cationic polyacrylamide (PAM), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), activated silica (AS) and a kind of polyelectrolyte called AN prepared by the authors. The coagulating solution was added to the glass jar holding 1 L wastewater and stirred to a uniform mixture which was stilled to let the supernatant turn out. The supernatant was analyzed to see the removal efficiencies of suspended solid (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), soluble chemical oxygen demand (S-COD), total phosphorus (TP) and orthophosphate (PO4 -P). It is found that PAC is efficient in reducing those five matters, PAM, PVA and 3? AN each faciliates the reduction of TP, SS, COD and S-COD and has little contribution to the removal of ammonia nitrigen and orthophosphate, and AS is noneffective at all. The coagulation-flocculation process with PAC has demonstrated applicable to the treatment of combined sewage in Shanghai, and it involves mainly the sweep coagulation mechanism and maybe some more complicated mechanism as well. 展开更多

Following biological treatment, wastewater continues to have endotoxic active materials. However, because there is a trend of potable reuse and because endotoxic active materials potentially have harmful effects on human health, their removal from water is crucial. Lipopolysaccharide endotoxin has hydrophobic groups, and their removal using a coagulation-flocculation alternative is believed to be efficient. Thus, their removal from reclaimed wastewater using the coagulation-flocculation process was assessed. Secondary effluent samples from a wastewater treatment plant located in Sapporo, Japan, were investigated. It was found that this process gave satisfactory results in removing endotoxins, with an optimum removal rate of up to 40.5%. The endotoxin removal was maximized by adjusting the pH at the low range 4 - 5.5, with an aluminum sulfate dose of 80 mg/L. Further increases of the coagulant dose did not improve the removal efficiency. DOC and turbidity removal were at their optimum at higher pH range 5.5 - 6.5. Thus coagulation and flocculation could be considered as the first barrier and should be followed by other treatments to safely reuse reclaimed wastewater. 展开更多

Wastewater from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (Mexico) was treated by a coagulation-flocculation using natural gums. The residual water was characterized in terms of organic load, and biological contaminants, i.e. total Coliforms (TC), fecal Coliforms (FC) and helminth eggs (HE). The sample has values of 2.8 × 107 MPN/100 ml, 8.48 × 106 MPN/100 ml and 470 HE/L is regarded to TC, FC and HH, respectively. The HE identified in the wastewaters were Diphyllobothrium latum, Ascaris lumbricoides, Hymenolepis nana and Toxocara canis. From several gums, Hydroxypropyl triammonium chloride guar gum (HPTAC-guar) was selected as the most adequate coagulant-flocculant for the class of municipal wastewater (MWW). A diminution of 82% for TC, 94% for FC and 99% for HE was obtained. Besides, the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and turbidity removals were 46% and 39% respectively. The natural gum mixed with Ca(OH)2, obtained removals of 52% for TC, 100% for HE, 47% for COD and 30% for turbidity. 展开更多

The influence of the degree of wastewater coagulation-flocculation and supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) methodsisconsidered. The regularities of changes in the composition of the purity of the reagents used and the parameters of SCWO are established. Based on the results of chromatographic analysis of the effluent after washing the mass rape, it is found that the achievement of the required parameters is achieved by treatment with a combination of coagulation-flocculation method and supercritical water oxidation (SCWO). The necessity of combining techniques is insufficient oxidation in SCWO lignin conducted at T = 400oC and P = 25 MPa, T = 500oC and P = 30 MPa. Effluent treatment of process of styrene and propylene oxide“Nizhnekamskneftekhim”conducted by the SCWO, using an oxidant (H2O2), and without an oxidant showed the possibility of cleaning without the use of an oxidizing agent in the process parameters T = 500oC, P = 30 MPa. 展开更多

Prosopis laevigata and Opuntia ficus-indica grow in arid and semiarid regions of Mexico and other countries. Both produce biopolymers with interesting characteristics from the rheological point of view as well as because of their coagulating-flocculating capabilities. Prosopis produce galactomannans inside the endosperm, very similar to those found in guar, locust bean, and tara gums. Opuntia sp. produces mucilage that contains polygalacturonic acid and five neutral sugars. Prosopis seed gum has not been proposed to be used as coagulant-flocculant before. In the case of Opuntia mucilage, some authors have suggested its use in the treatment of waters, using either the mucilage or the whole cladode powder. The use of these products in the treatment of municipal or even industrial wastewaters could give rise to diverse benefits. From the environmental point of view, treated waters with neither Fe nor Al, nor synthetic polymers would be obtained (with less toxicity risk). Besides, the produced sludges would be smaller in amount, with better biodegradability, and lower metals content. From the economical point of view, the use of these biopolymers would give an added value to the Opuntia and Prosopis culture in Mexico, helping small communities to enhance their incomes by producing environmental-friendly products. This work shows that both Prosopis galactomannan and Opuntia mucilage can be used to treat municipal wastewaters with an initial organic charge of about 827 mg/L as COD by the coagulation-flocculation process, with COD removals for the mesquite seed gum of up to 90% (pH 10, dose of 75 mg/L) and of 60% (pH 7, doses of 50 and 150 mg/L). In the case of mucilage, 65% of the initial COD was removed at pH 10 (dose of 50 mg/L). These figures are very promising for the treatment of wastewaters, with environmental-friendly products. 展开更多

Hospital wastewater represents an infectious and toxic risk to human health and the environment due to its contents. Most hospitals in developing countries, including Benin, do not have a wastewater treatment plant. In this study, the wastewater from two hospitals in northern Benin was characterized and then treated with Azadirachta indica leaves, Moringa oleifera and Luffa cylindrica seeds by coagulation/flocculation process. The wastewater characteristics showed that the collected samples are greatly polluted by organic matter and fecal bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus fecal and Total coliforms. Jar-test results revealed that 95.74%, 78%, 49.19% of turbidity, 51.35%, 38.32%, 22.19% of COD, 93.16%, 85.26%, 83.30% against Escherichia coli, 92.11%, 90.93%, 94.60% against total Coliforms and 99.37%, 91%, 99%, 55.07% against Enterococcus were removed from hospital wastewater using Moringa oleifera, Luffa cylindrica seed and Azadirachta indica leaves respectively at dose of 100 mg/L. The results highlighted that the natural coagulants could be successfully used for the removal of turbidity and fecal bacteria from hospital wastewater. 展开更多

Fluid flow and mixing phenomenon have a significant impact on coagulation and flocculation processes. Particles dissipating the turbulent kinetic energy increase the efficiency of collision, grow in size and incorporate phosphate from the wastewater Only certain flocks can be separated depending on their stability, size, density, etc.. According to the literature the velocity gradient of the flow (G-value) is the main design parameter of the flocculators, but there is a need to take into account at least the flocks age, too. In this paper, it presents a novel approach to determine the efficiency of flocculators using local mean age theory, residence time distribution and dimensional analysis. Calculations were performed for two constructions of cascade reactors---one with small baffles and one without these; hydraulical performance and the achievable conversion were compared. As a result, the flocculator with small baffles proved to be more efficient than the traditional construction. 展开更多

In order to accelerate the sedimentation of super-large-scale argillized ultrafine tailings with bad features such as low settling velocity, muddy overflow water, and large flocculant dosage, a fly-ash-based magnetic coagulant (FAMC) was used in a dynamic experimental device. To obtain the best possible combination of the impact factors (magnetic intensity, FAMC dosage, flocculant dosage, and feed speed) for minimum overflow turbidity, a response surface methodology test coupled with a four-factor five-level central composite design was conducted. The synergy mechanism of FAMC and flocculant was analyzed based on the potential measurement and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the flocculant dosage, overflow turbidity, and solid content can be reduced by 50%, 90%, and 80%, while the handling capacity per unit and efficiency of backfill and dry stacking can be promoted by 20%, 17%, and 13%, respectively, with a magnetic intensity of 0.3 T, FAMC dosage of 200 mL/t, flocculant dosage of 30 g/t, and feed speed of 0.6 t/(m^2·h). Therefore, synergy of FAMC and flocculant has obvious efficiency in saving energy and protecting the environment by allowing 70×10^6 t/a of argillized ultrafine tailings slurry to be disposed safely and efficiently with a cost saving of more than 53×106 Yuan/a, which gives it great promise for use in domestic and foreign mines. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer(GC)is a prevalent malignancy with a substantial health burden and high mortality rate, despite advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment.Compared with the global average,Asia, notably China, reports disproportionately high GC incidences. The disease often progresses asymptoma-tically in the early stages, leading to delayed diagnosis and compromised out-comes.Thus,it is crucial to identify early diagnostic biomarkers and enhance treatment strategies to improve patient outcomes and reduce mortality.METHODS Retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 148 patients with GC treated at the Civil Aviation Shanghai Hospital between December 2022 and December 2023.The associations of coagulation indices-partial thromboplastin time(APTT),prothrombin time(PT),thrombin time(TT),fibrinogen, fibrinogen degradation products(FDP),fasting blood glucose, and D-dimer(D-D)with TNM stage and distant metastasis were examined.RESULTS Prolongation of APTT,PT,and TT was significantly correlated with the GC TNM stage.Hence, abnormal coagulation system activation was closely related to disease progression.Elevated FDP and D-D were significantly associated with distant metastasis in GC(P<0.05),suggesting that increased fibrinolytic activity contributes to increased metastatic risk.CONCLUSION Our Results reveal coagulation indices,FDPs as GC biomarkers, reflecting abnormal coagulation/fibrinolysis,aiding disease progression, metastasis prediction, and helping clinicians assess thrombotic risk for early intervention and personalized treatment plans. 展开更多

This study was intended to compare coagulation behavior and floc properties of two dualcoagulants polyaluminum chloride–compound bioflocculant(PAC–CBF)(PAC dose first) and compound bioflocculant–polyaluminum chloride(CBF–PAC)(CBF dose first) with those of PAC alone in low temperature drinking water treatment. Results showed that dualcoagulants could improve DOC removal efficiency from 30% up to 34%. Moreover, CBF contributed to the increase of floc size and growth rate, especially those of PAC–CBF were almost twice bigger than those of PAC. However, dual-coagulants formed looser and weaker flocs with lower breakage factors in which fractal dimension of PAC–CBF flocs was low which indicates a looser floc structure. The floc recovery ability was in the following order:PAC–CBF 〉 PAC alone 〉 CBF–PAC. The flocculation mechanism of PAC was charge neutralization and enmeshment, meanwhile the negatively charged CBF added absorption and bridging effect. 展开更多

The electrokinetic characteristics and coagulation behaviors of polyaluminum silicate chloride (PASiC) and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) were studied and compared by streaming current (SC) measurement and jar test method. The experimental results showed that the interaction between polysilicic acid characterized negative charge and hydrolyzed aluminum species result in a decrease of the charge neutralizing ability of PASiC, compared to PAC. The decrease has a close relationship with the basicity ( B ) and Al/Si molar ratio in PASiC. The less the B value and the Al/Si molar ratio, the lower the charge neutralizing ability of PASiC is. In contrast, the preparation technique for PASiC affects the charge-neutralization of PASiC to a smaller extent. In addition, compared with PAC, PASiC may enhance aggregating efficiency and give better coagulating effects. 展开更多

Inexpensive flocculant-modified iron tailings sand(ITS)were converted into effective flocculation materials for cyanobacteria blooms. After composite modification with polyaluminum chloride(PAC)and polyacrylamide(PAM),the surface charge of ITS was altered from negative to positive, and surface adhesion was increased by~1.5 times.PAC/PAM-modified ITS(PP-ITS)had strong flocculating effects on cyanobacteria, facilitating their removal. When the dosage of PP-ITS was 150 mg/L and the ratio of flocculant to ITS was 1:20,the elimination rate of cyanobacteria was as high as 90%.The flocs formed were better than those with chitosan-modified clays(CS-CA)and PAC-modified ITS(PAC-ITS)in terms of settling velocity, size, and recovery ability. The positively charged groups in the flocculant, such as-NH_(2) and Al^(3+),are attracted to negatively charged ions on the surface of ITS,altering the surface charge.Additionally, hydrogen bonds could form between amide side groups, and surface adhesion was improved through molecular association.Coupled with the strong bridging and sweeping effects of the flocculant, the flocs generated by PP-ITS formed rapidly and were large and resilient. The use of PP-ITS could effectively treat cyanobacteria blooms as well as solve the problem of ore tailings disposal. These results are of practical importance for engineering strategies to control cyanobacteria blooms, though there are still some issues that need to be addressed, such as how cyanobacteria flocs are collected and utilized after settling. 展开更多

BACKGROUND:This study aimed to explore the importance of routine coagulation tests for the early detection of sepsis and to quickly identify patients at a high risk of mortality.METHODS:This retrospective single-center study collected data from patients meeting the clinical criteria for systemic inflammatory response syndrome(SIRS) with a confirmed infection source.Patients with coagulation disorders or on medications affecting coagulation were excluded.Patients were divided into sepsis and non-sepsis groups based on a Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA) score of ≥2.Univariate and multivariate logistic regression identified indicators from routine coagulation tests that predict sepsis.Prognostic roles of coagulation indicators were analyzed within the sepsis group.RESULTS:A total of 512 patients were included, with 396 in the sepsis group and 116 in the non-sepsis group. The predictive factors in the sepsis prediction model encompass fibrin degradation products(FDP),D-dimer,lactate,procalcitonin(PCT) levels and the utilization of mechanical ventilation.Early elevation of FDP and D-dimer levels predicted sepsis onset. The model exhibited an area under the curve(AUC) of 0.943(95% CI:0.923–0.963).In the sepsis group,Cox regression analysis revealed an association between prothrombin time(PT) and in-hospital mortality.CONCLUSION:Abnormal high FDP and D-dimer levels in the early stages of sepsis provide a supplementary method for predicting sepsis. As the disease progresses, prolonged PT in the early stages of sepsis suggests a poor prognosis. 展开更多

The valorization of plant biomass towards high-value chemicals is a global trend aimed at solving the problem of the huge accumulation of lignocellulosic waste.Plant polysaccharides are natural polymers that make up about 20%by weight of biomass, with a unique variety of structures and properties that depend on the type of raw materials and themethod of their extraction. In this study, the effect of variability of the oxidative delignification process conditions in the《acetic acid-hydrogen peroxide-water-(NH_(4))_(6)Mo_(7)O_(24)》on the extraction and properties of aspen(Populus tremula)wood hemicelluloses was investigated for the first time. The developed method for the extraction of hemicelluloses provided the production of water-soluble polysaccharides with a high yield(to 62.55 wt.%in relation to total content in wood),high purity, with a branched structure and active centers on the side chains in the form of uronic acids. In the course of the work,it was found that the obtained hemicelluloses aremainly represented by partially acetylated galactoxylan and glucuronoxylan.Promising results of biological studies of the antioxidant and flocculation activity of xylans are promising for the use of plant polysaccharides in health care and food industry. 展开更多

The flocculation behavior of carbon black (CB)-filled isoprene rubber (IR) nanocomposites was systematically investigated under both dynamic and static conditions to unravel the distinct mechanisms governing filler network evolution.Under dynamic conditions, small oscillatory shear strains (0.1%) significantly enhanced filler particle motion, leading to pronounced agglomeration and a flocculation degree of about 4.3MPa at 145℃.In contrast, static flocculation exhibited a fundamentally different mechanism dominated by polymer chain dynamics, which is driven mainly by thermal activation.Radial distribution function (RDF) analysis of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed a slight decrease (2 nm) in the interparticle distance peak after static annealing at 100℃ for 7 h,indicating localized motion of CB particles. However, the overall filler network remained stable, with no significant agglomeration observed. The increase in bound rubber content from about 23% to 28% with rising temperature further confirmed the dominant role of polymer chain adsorption and interfacial reinforcement in static flocculation. These findings highlight the critical influence of external strain on filler network formation and provide new insights into the polymer-dominated mechanism of static flocculation. The results offer practical guidance for optimizing the storage and processing of rubber nanocomposites, particularly in applications where static flocculation during prolonged storage is a concern. 展开更多
