Background: Integrative nutrition has been defined as providing a combination of medical nutrition therapy including a personalized investigation on the root cause of chronic diseases due to poor lifestyle. It has been evident that integrative nutrition has a strong impact in weight management. Case Report: 5 case reports were investigated in the current study where we reported 5 cases of participants that have completed a 6-month duration of a telenutrition weight loss program, supported with weekly telemonitoring and monthly telehealth coaching following an integrative nutrition approach. All participants have significantly lost weight through a 6-month period. Additionally, each participant has worked on specific aspect in their lifestyle following the circle of life components to overcome struggles in following their diets and support weight management. All 5 participants had a significant negative correlation between weight and having fun, home cooking, spirituality, sports, and their jobs, which means that being satisfied with the mentioned (CoL) measures, lower values of the weight and increase steps. Thus, future research must carry similar interventions with long term durations and evaluate the most common aspect of life associated with obesity. 展开更多

Objective: Like their urban counterparts, rural populations are experiencing increased health risks due to chronic disease. However, disease management is more problematic due to isolation, increased difficulty in getting to medical appointments, and reduced numbers of medical personnel. We undertook a pilot study to investigate the feasibility and utility of health coaching for rural residents with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) from a local pharmacy. Methods: Using the pharmacy database to identify qualified individuals, a nursing student recruited four individuals aged 40 - 79, with a history of DM2 of 3 - 15 years, to participate in the pilot project. Individual in-person interviews were conducted to identify specific goals to effectively self-manage their condition and to rate their confidence in their ability to fulfill these goals. Three monthly sessions were held to review and update goals, and to record blood pressure, waist circumference and weight measurements. Results: At the end of the study, all four achieved success in reaching and maintaining their personal dietary and physical activity goals. Significantly, all participants expressed increased confidence in their ability to self-manage their diabetes after health coaching. Conclusion: The provision of health coaching services from local pharmacies has potential to support rural clients in chronic disease management in medically under-serviced rural areas. 展开更多

With a rapidly ageing population in Singapore, older adults and their family members face challenges of age-related diseases, caregiver stress, and increasing demand for caregiving services. To address this pressing issue, this pilot study aims to introduce online health coaching for older adults in Singapore and evaluate its effectiveness on maintenance of personal healthcare. In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, older adults’ activities were largely restricted by measures on social distancing. The online health coaching provided a solution for older adults to achieve a healthy lifestyle in a contactless manner. In this pilot study, 18 older adults (≥55 years old) who were willing to be coached by trained health coaches (n = 10) for 8 weeks (once a week) were recruited. Pre- and post-surveys with older adults were conducted. Furthermore, health coaching booklet was used to control the quality of coaching and to record diet and exercise plans. The pilot study demonstrated that the health coaching provided older adults with knowledge of nutrition and exercise, raised their awareness of well-being in terms of daily meals and regular exercise, and provided an alternative to maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst global pandemic. Additionally, we also identified that the older adults’ satisfactions with health coaching were positively associated with educational levels (R2 = 0.31). Lastly, this pilot study highlighted that health coaching standardization process for older adults is critical for researchers and healthcare practitioners in the future. 展开更多

Item Response Theory (IRT) models have been extensively used in the field of education to identify link between a response to a test item and underlying latent capability of the test taker. We demonstrate the benefit of using IRT model to analyze health data using data from M. chat program such that statisticians can use the method in lieu of traditional methods including Cronbach’s alpha, discriminant analysis and factor analysis. M. chat is a technology based health coaching program and the baseline survey from the participants in the program includes response in different but correlated domains of diet, social habits, leisure practices, mental health, substance abuse, self-sufficiency and medication adherence. We analyzed baseline data from 416 subjects using IRT models. Our results indicated that responses pertaining to alcohol and substance abuse were the most discriminating items with an average discrimination estimate of approximately 4.99 whereas the least discriminating items were the diet habits, with an average estimate of -0.476. 展开更多

Background: The importance of monitoring cognition during awake craniotomy has been well described in previous studies. The relevance of being coached during such a procedure has received less attention and questions still remain unanswered about what factors are the most important herein. Objective: The aim of this study was to qualitatively analyze what factors were, according to our patients, important in being coaching during awake craniotomy. Methods: Twenty-six patients who underwent awake craniotomy received a questionnaire about their experiences during the procedure. The questions concerned different aspects of the pre-operative part, the operation itself and coaching aspects. Answers were qualitatively analyzed by two investigators and per question, different answer categories were made. Results: Two thirds of the 20 patients who responded to the questionnaire reported anxiety in the days before or during the operation, varying from general anxiety for being awake during surgery to anxiety for very specific aspects such as opening the skull. The constant presence of the neuropsychologist and a transparent communication during the procedure were most frequently (65% of all the answers) reported as helpful in staying calm. Conclusion: Results of this descriptive study show that patients experience different anxieties before and during an awake craniotomy and give more insight into what factors are important for patients in being coached during such an operation. This study gives directions for clinicians in improving their role as a coach. 展开更多

Game-centered approach has become increasingly recognized in coaching with its potential for improving players' motivation and game performance. Since players are the centered component of this approach, players' perception can provide useful information for coaches in order to enhance cognitive learning of game play and improve game performance. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the players' perception for implementing the game-centered approach in coaching. Approximately 30 min of interviews with open-ended questions were conducted with five female collegiate soccer players. The game-centered approach helped participants to recognize their weaknesses and their strengths, to think more tactically and to adapt their performance from practices to competitions. Players were encouraged to tactically analyze their performance, emphasize cognitive learning of game play, and construct game knowledge. The cognitive learning helped players to easily transfer their game performance into competitions. Additionally, there was a positive impact on the players' motivation while they experienced enjoyment, challenges, and teamwork. Cognitive learning of game play, the performance adaptability for competitions, as well as the improving players' motivation was supported during the game-centered approach. Results provided helpful information for coaches to improve the effectiveness of practices which are truly useful to competitions. 展开更多

In line with European developments, a Dutch second phase coaching program, referred to as the DX- (Driver Xperience) program, was developed for young novice drivers to counteract their high accident risk. More specifically, the aim of the DX-program was to enable young drivers to make responsible decisions and develop positive attitudes regarding four levels of the driving task: combining life style and driving, planning and navigation, participating in different traffic situations and handling the vehicle. In this paper, the design principles of the program are described. The empirical study focused on the entry characteristics of the participating young drivers (n = 3,117) as compared to a reference group of young drivers (n = 345). Results show that the DX-program attracted young drivers that, in some respects, showed a more risky profile than average young drivers in terms of speed violations, anger and the number of fines. In addition, four groups of participants with sharply differing driving styles could be distinguished. Implications for educational design and follow-up research are discussed within the theoretical framework of self-regulated learning. 展开更多

In order to help athletes optimize their performances in competitions while prevent overtraining and the risk of overuse injuries,it is important to develop science-based strategies for optimally designing training programs. The purpose of the present study is to develop a novel method by the combined use of optimal control theory and a training-performance model for designing optimal training programs, with the hope of helping athletes achieve the best performance exactly on the competition day while properly manage training load during the training course for preventing overtraining. The training-performance model used in the proposed optimal control framework is a conceptual extension of the Banister impulse-response model that describes the dynamics of performance, training load(served as the control variable),fitness(the overall positive effects on performance),and fatigue(the overall negative effects on performance). The objective functional of the proposed optimal control framework is to maximize the fitness and minimize the fatigue on the competition day with the goal of maximizing the performance on the competition day while minimizing the cumulative training load during the training course. The Forward-Backward Sweep Method is used to solve the proposed optimal control framework to obtain the optimal solutions of performance, training load, fitness, and fatigue. The simulation results show that the performance on the competition day is higher while the cumulative training load during the training course is lower with using optimal control theory than those without, successfully showing the feasibility and benefits of using the proposed optimal control framework to design optimal training programs for helping athletes achieve the best performance exactly on the competition day while properly manage training load during the training course for preventing overtraining. The present feasibility study lays the foundation of the combined use of optimal control theory and training-performance models to design personalized optimal training programs in real applications in athletic training and sports science for helping athletes achieve the best performances in competitions while prevent overtraining and the risk of overuse injuries. 展开更多
