Effective antifouling coatings are critical for protecting marine infrastructure from biofouling and environmental degradation;however, achieving long-term antifouling performance along with environmental stability remains a major challenge. In this study,a multifunctional bio-based epoxy coating is developed by integrating a dual-action antifouling system.Cinnamic acid(CA),which is known for its antibacterial and UV-shielding properties, was chemically grafted into ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether(EGDE)to provide intrinsic antifouling and anti-UV functions.Simultaneously, the KH560-modified silica aerogel was incorporated to create a dense hydrophobic surface that repels microorganism adhesion. The resulting coating exhibited a superhydrophobic contact angle of 154.3°,an ultralow surface energy, and exceptional resistance to protein and algal adhesion.Additionally,it achieves 99%bactericidal efficiency against Escherichia coli(E.coli)and Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)while maintaining high transparency and ease of processing. These results highlight a promising strategy for designing durable and ecofriendly antifouling coatings suitable for demanding marine environments. 展开更多

A gradient HPLC method was established for the determination of harpagoside and cinnamic acid in Radix Scrophulariae (Xuanshen) and a proposition was put forward for the lowest content of the characteristic and active constituent (harpagoside) for qualified Radix Scrophulariae. The experimental conditions were as follows: Ultrasphere ODS column (250 mm 4.6 mm, 5 mm), mobile phase: acetonitrile-water (containing 1.0% acetic acid) (20:8050:50) (20 min), flow-rate 1 mLmin-1, room temperature, detection wavelength 278 nm. Twenty-eight samples of Xuan-shen (Radix Scrophulariae) from different districts of China were analyzed and the contents of harpagoside and cinnamic acid in Xuan-shen were 0.041~0.244% and 0.012~0.068% respectively. The recoveries (RSD)% were 97.13(0.80)% for harpagoside and 99.38(0.51)% for cinnamic acid. The method is simple and accurate. It can be used for the quality control of Radix Scrophulariae. We propose that the content of harpagoside in qualified Radix Scrophularia should be no less than 0.05%. 展开更多

To investigate the effects of a plant autotoxin, cinnamic acid, on bacterial communities in the rhizosphere soil of cucumber seedlings under salt stress, we used cucumber as the experimental material, cinnamic acid as the autotoxin, and NaCl to apply salt stress. Bacterial communities in the rhizosphere soil were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), and clone sequencing. Salt stress decreased the diversity of bacterial species in rhizosphere soil of cucumber seedlings at several growth stages. Cinnamic acid exacerbated the effects of salt stress at high concentrations, but alleviated its effects at low concentrations. Cloning and sequencing results indicated that DGGE bands amplified from soil samples showed high homology to uncultured bacterial species. Cinnamic acid at 50 mg kg^-1 soil improved cucumber growth and was the most effective treatment to alleviate the effects of salt stress on bacterial communities. 展开更多

A sensitive, simple, and accurate method was developed for the determination and pharmacokinetic comparison of cinnamic acid in rat plasma after the administration of a Traditional Chinese Medicinal preparation, Di-Gu-Pi decoction, and pure cinnamic acid using RP-HPLC. Di-Gu-Pi was extracted with 5% aqueous sodium bicarbonate, which was followed by purification with ion exchange column chromatography. The plasma samples taken from rats were deproteinized with methanol. The reversed-phase (HPLC) system with a Diamonsil C18 column and methanol-acetonitfile-water (8: 32: 60, volume ratio) (adjusted to pH = 3.0 with glacial acetic acid) as the mobile phase was employed for the separation of cinnamic acid in the plasma samples. The detection was set at 272 nm and 3-(p-fluoro-phenyl)-2-propenoic acid was chosen as the internal standard. The calibration curve was linear in a range from 0. 10 to 25.0μg/mL (R2 = 0. 9988, n = 9). The precision was 3.42%-10. 10%; the between-day precision was 2. 84%-8.91% ; the accuracy was - 1.51%-1.26% ; the mean recovery was 99. 9%. The method was found to be sensitive, simple, accurate and appropriate for the determination of cinnamic acid. 展开更多

In order to study the effects of exogenous cinnamic acids on plant growth, contents of photosynthetic pigment, root activities and ATPase activities of root membrane at cucumber seedling stage, the seedlings of Shandong Mici cucumber were tested. The results showed that seedlings growth, contents of photosynthetic pigment, root activities and ATPase activities of root membrane were inhibited by cinnamic acids. The growth and root activities of seedlings were significantly (P〈0.05) lower in the soil amended with 100 mg kg^-1 cinnamic acids compared to the control. The contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll a+b and carotenoid of seedlings significantly (P〈0.05) decreased in the soil amended with 200 mg kg^-1 cinnamic acids, whereas ATPase activities exhibited a higher sensitivity and greatly decreased in the soil amended with 50 mg kg^-1 cinnamic acids. These results suggested that cinnamic acids could induce a stress condition, and the stress intensities increased with enhanced cinnamic acid concentration. 展开更多

Batch crystallization studies of curcumin from hydrotropic solutions of sodium cumenesulphonate (NaCS) and of cinnamic acid from a photosensitive hydrotropic medium of sodium cinnamate (Na-CIN) were carried out, in an agitated reactor for the effect of alternate heating and cooling cycles on crystal morphology. The crystal characterization by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and crystal size distribution (CSD) showed formation of spheroidal curcumin crystals while cinnamic acid formed porous aggregates when subjected to thermal cycles. The UV irradiation of cinnamic acid however showed no formation of the aggregates. The type of hydrotrope used and the initial crystal morphologies of curcumin and cinnamic acid are shown to be important factors to result in a different behaviour of the crystal morphology upon thermal cycles. The CSD data were effectively used for estimation of nucleation and growth rate parameters. 展开更多

Cinnamic acid(CA)and cinnamaldehyde(CMA)are essential components of the spice cinnamon,a commonly used food oxidizer and preservative. In this work, the binding mechanism and structural information of CA/CMA to bovine haemoglobin(BHb)were investigated through multi-spectroscopic and molecular simulation experi-ments focusing on assessing the effect of phytochemicals in spices on BHb.Fluorescence and isothermal titration calorimetry experiments showed that CA possessed a binding constant of 10^(5) L/mol and an electrostatic inter-action with BHb resulting in the formation of stable complexes compared to CMA-BHb.Spectroscopic results(UV-Vis,CD and synchrotron fluorescence experiments)demonstrated that the addition of CA/CMA differently altered or affected the polarity of the BHb microenvironment, slightly perturbing the secondary structure of BHb.Thermodynamic analyses and molecular docking data were analyzed to confirm the dominance of van der Waals and hydrogen bonding forces in the energy contribution of the CMA-BHb system, and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that CA/CMA was relatively stable in the hydrophobic pocket of the protein(BHb).These findings will provide a basis for applying phytochemicals in spices in meat processing. 展开更多

The global spread of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)continues to worsen, with plasmid-mediated conjugation serving as a major transmission route.Although developing conjugation inhibitors to block this process is a promising strategy, current options are limited by toxicity and poor in vivo efficacy. This study evaluated the effect of cinnamic acid(CA;3-phenyl-2-acrylic acid),a widely abundant food additive found in cinnamon,on plasmid conjugation.CA effectively inhibited the conjugation of various resistance plasmids in vitro,ex vivo, and in vivo.Transcriptomic analysis indicated that CA disrupts the electron transport chain(ETC)and proton motive force(PMF)by inhibiting the tricarboxylic acid(TCA)cycle, leading to reduced intracellular adenosine triphosphate(ATP)-a critical factor for plasmid conjugation.Biocompatibility assays showed that CA maintains high biosafety while preserving gut microbiota homeostasis. Therefore, these findings provide new insights into ARG inhibition and highlight the potential of CA as a novel strategy to combat the global rise in antibiotic-resistant infections. 展开更多

(Hydroxy)cinnamic acids(HCAs),a kind of prevalent phenolic acid compound, boast diverse biological activities. However, their limited liposolubility impedes their utilization in oil-based systems.Addressing this challenge,we presented an eco-friendly approach to synthesize(hydroxy)cinnamic monoterpenyl esters in biomass solvent 2-methyltetrahydrofuran(2-MeTHF),grafting antibacterially active monoterpenyl onto phenolic acid compounds through esterification/transesterification.This green enzymatic catalytic strategy successfully synthesized a se-ries of cinnamic monoterpenyl esters(yield>87.84%),p-coumaric monoterpenyl esters(yield>67.26%),and caffeic monoterpenyl esters(yield>10.55%).The mechanism difference in reaction efficiency of different hy-droxyl cinnamic acids was revealed through kinetic calculation and molecular docking. As the number of hy-droxyl group increased, the affinity between substrates and lipase decreased, which was reflected by the Km value,in which the Km value of cinnamic acid,p-coumaric acid and caffeic acid were 23.72,52.04 and 60.05,respectively.Furthermore,molecular docking results showed that the strong binding of the hydroxyl groups to the hydrophobic cavity of the lipase resulted in the need for more energy to twist the reaction site closer to the active center during the reaction. This research provided a green and feasible route for the synthesis of phenolic acid ester derivatives. 展开更多

Cinnamic acid(CCA),p-coumaric acid(PCA),and caffeic acid(CA)are natural phenolic compounds and extensively utilized in the food industry.PCA and CA are both derivatives of CCA and share comparable molecular structures. In this study, the inhibitory mechanisms of CCA,PCA,and CA on α-glucosidase was investigated by employing inhibition kinetics and molecular docking analyses. Our results revealed that CCA(IC_(50)=6.12±0.056 mM)and CA(IC_(50)=2.02±0.083 mM)exhibited mixed-type inhibition, while PCA(IC_(50)=3.82±0.095 mM)exhibited non-competitive inhibition. The intermolecular energy values of CCA,PCA,and CA withα-glucosidase were determined to be-7.11,-7.94,and-8.14 kcal/mol,respectively,indicating their binding toα-glucosidase via hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding, among which CA has the greatest binding ability.Fluorescence quenching results and circular dichroism(CD)spectra further confirmed the higher affinity of CA toα-glucosidase than that of CCA and PCA.These outcomes shed light on the importance of molecular structure differences in α-glucosidase inhibition and highlight the potential scope for developing low-glycemicindex functional foods. 展开更多
