The effect of addition of 0.05wt.% to 0.25 wt.% Ca,Zr,Al-FeSi alloy on in-ladle and in-mould inoculation of grey cast irons was investigated. In the present paper, the conclusions drawn are based on thermal analysis. For the solidification pattern, some specific cooling curves characteristics, such as the degree of undercooling at the beginning of eutectic solidif ication and at the end of solidifi cation,as well as the recalescence level, are identif ied to be more influenced by the inoculation technique. The degree of eutectic undercooling of the electrically melted base iron having 0.025% S,0.003% Al and 3.5% Ce is excessively high(39-40℃),generating a relatively high need for inoculation.Under these conditions, the in-mould inoculation has a more signif icant effect compared to ladle inoculation, especially at lower inoculant usage(less than 0.20 wt.%).Generally,the eff iciency of 0.05wt.% -0.15wt.% of alloy for in-mould inoculation is comparable to,or better than, that of 0.15wt.% -0.25wt.% addition in ladle inoculation procedures. In order to secure stable and controlled processes, representative thermal analysis parameters could be used, especially in thin wall grey iron castings production. 展开更多

The objective of this investigation is to study the influence of vanadium(5.0wt%–10.0wt%) and chromium(0–9.0wt%) on the microstructure and hardness of Cr-V-Mn-Ni white cast irons with spheroidal vanadium carbides. The alloys' microstructural features are presented and discussed with regard to the distribution of phase elements. The structural constituents of the alloys are spheroidal VC, proeutectoid cementite, ledeburite eutectic, rosette-shaped carbide eutectic(based on M7C3), pearlite, martensite, and austenite. Their combinations and area fraction(AF) ratios are reported to be influenced by the alloys' chemical composition. Spheroidized VC particles are found to be sites for the nucleation of carbide eutectics. Cr and V are shown to substitute each other in the VC and M7C3 carbides, respectively. Chromium alloying leads to the formation of a eutectic(γ-Fe + М7С3), preventing the appearance of proeutectoid cementite in the structure. Vanadium and chromium are revealed to increase the total carbide fraction and the amount of austenite in the matrix. Cr is observed to play a key role in controlling the metallic matrix microstructure. 展开更多

Full factorial design was used to evaluate the two-body abrasive resistance of 3wt%C–4wt%Mn–1.5wt%Ni spheroidal carbide cast irons with varying vanadium(5.0wt%–10.0wt%) and chromium(up to 9.0wt%) contents. The alloys were quenched at 920℃. The regression equation of wear rate as a function of V and Cr contents was proposed. This regression equation shows that the wear rate decreases with increasing V content because of the growth of spheroidal VC carbide amount. Cr influences the overall response in a complex manner both by reducing the wear rate owing to eutectic carbides(M7C3) and by increasing the wear rate though stabilizing austenite to deformation-induced martensite transformation. This transformation is recognized as an important factor in increasing the abrasive response of the alloys. By analyzing the regression equation, the optimal content ranges are found to be 7.5wt%–10.0wt% for V and 2.5wt%–4.5wt% for Cr, which corresponds to the alloys containing 9vol%–15vol% spheroidal VC carbides, 8vol%–16vol% M7C3, and a metastable austenite/martensite matrix. The wear resistance is 1.9–2.3 times that of the traditional 12wt% V–13wt% Mn spheroidal carbide cast iron. 展开更多

The fracture modes of low alloy steels and cast irons under tensile and fatigue conditions were identified by electron back-scattered diffraction(EBSD) misorientation analysis in this research. The curves of grain reference orientation deviation(GROD) distribution perpendicular to the fracture surface were obtained by EBSD observation, and the characteristics of each fracture mode were identified. The GROD value of the specimen fractured in tension decreases to a constant related to the elongation of corresponding specimen in the far field(farther than 5 mm away from the fracture surface). The peak exhibits in GROD curves of two smooth specimens and a notched specimen near the fracture surface(within 5 mm away from the fracture surface), and the formation mechanisms were discussed in detail based on the influences of specimen geometries(smooth or notched) and material toughness. The GROD value of fatigue fractured specimen is close to that at undeformed condition in the whole field, except the small area near the crack path. The loading conditions(constant stress amplitude loading or constant stress intensity factor range K loading) and the EBSD striation formation during fatigue crack propagation were also studied by EBSD observation parallel to the crack path. 展开更多

The physical metallurgy underlying the development of cast microstructures in abrasion resistant high chromium cast irons, and their structural modification by thermal treatments is relatively complex. Structural characterisation via electron microscopy therefore has a key role to play in furthering our understanding of the phase transformations that control the microstructures and hence the service performances of these irons as wear parts. This paper shows how both scanning and especially transmission electron microscopy can provide valuable information on the nature of eutectic and secondary carbides and on the matrix structures in these irons. Particular attention is given to current characterisation research on conventionally cast 30%Cr irons that are used for applications involving corrosive wear e.g. slurry pumps and on a semi-solid cast 27%Cr iron that has a potential for applications in industry. 展开更多

The consumption of rare earths on cast iron is the first rank in all applied fields in China. The affinity between rare earths and O,S and other elements in cast iron is strong enough, which is the foundation to improve microstructures and properties of cast iron. But dynamics of reaction of rare earths in cast iron is disappointed. Therefore, effects of application of rare earths in cast iron always fluctuate. The good effects can be got when dynamics of reaction of rare earths on cast iron is controlled and improved. It is proved by practice that microstructures and properties of cast iron, such as ductile iron, vermicular graphite cast iron, gray cast iron, white cast iron and so on,are improved with amonnt of rare earths incrtasing. There is 'double peaks effect' for strength of cast iron vs. addition of rare earths in cast iron. The application of rare earths in cast iron still possesses bright prospects nowadays and future. 展开更多

The influences of copper on microstructure and the hardening behavior of high chromium cast irons subjected to sub-critical treatment were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of the as-cast high chromium cast irons consists of retained austenite, martensite and M1C3 type eutectic carbide. When copper is added into high chromium cast irons, austenite and carbide contents are increased. The increased addition of copper content from 0% to 1.84% leads to the increase of austenite and carbide from 15.9% and 20. 0% to 61.0% and 35.5% , respectively. In the process of sub-critical treatment, the retained austenite in the matrix can be precipitated into secondary carbides and then transforms into martensite in cooling process, which causes the secondary hardening of the alloy under sub-critical treatment. High chromium cast irons containing copper in sub-critical treatment appear the second hardening curve peak due to the precipitation of copper from supersaturated matrix. 展开更多

The valence electron structure of alloying austenite of 3C-15Cr high chromium white cast iron with different Mn contents from 1% to 6% is analyzed by BLD method and EET. Results show that the addition of Mn has major influence on the valence electron structure of the alloying austenite, especially on that of Fe-C, Fe-C-Cr and Fe-C-Cr-Mn unit cells of it. The effect becomes weak when Mn content is over 4%. Based on the effect of n~, F~~, the weighting of each unit cell and the degree of undercooling on phase transition of the aus- tenite, we can calculate the retained austenite content of as-cast structure of the high chromium white cast iron. The calculation results coincide well with those of the experiment. The soft-hard combined structures involving varying microhardness on the specimen surface of grey cast iron, processed by bionic laser technology, exhibit excellent wear resistance under dry sliding condition. Both the primary phase(PP)and the laser-treated phase(LP)play pivotal roles in the wear performance of grey cast iron,in association with various combinations of PP and LP microhardness, originating from different laser processing and heat treatment.Owing to the optimized combination of microhardness, the result exhibits the dominant role of LP,with higher microhardness,in wear test, indicating that this technology, apart from producing complex structures, can also act as a design-process method to modify the tribological properties of grey cast iron, and thus providing a feasible approach to tailor the surface microhardness and to modify the wear performance of grey cast iron. Moreover,a threshold of wear resistance is obtained, while LP microhardness is above 900 HV;meanwhile, beyond it,the change of PP microhardness has only minor impact on wear performance.Finite element analysis shows that,in line with varying microhardness combination, distinct stress distribution on specimen surface is achieved, agreeing well with the good wear resistance and tailorable microhardness of LP and PP. 展开更多

In the production of castings, intrusive gas pore represents a kind of common defects which can lead to leakage in high gas-tightness requirement castings, such as cylinder blocks and cylinder heads for engines. It occurs due to the intrusion of gases generated during the resin burning of the sand core into castings during the casting process. Therefore,a gas generation and flow constitution model was established,in which the gas generation rate is a function of temperature and time, and the flow of gas is controlled by the gas release, conservation, and Darcy's law.The heat transfer and gas flow during casting process was numerically simulated. The dangerous point of cores is firstly identified by a virtual heat transfer method based on the similarity between heat transfer and gas flow in the sand core. The gas pores in castings are predicted by the gas pressure, the viscosity and state of the melt for these dangerous points.Three distinct sand core structures were designed and used for the production of iron castings, and the simulated gas pore results were validated by the obtained castings. 展开更多

The engineblock production lines need high speed tapping with tungsten carbide taps. In the tapping process, the machining precision and the tool life of taps are directly influenced by tapping forces. And the parameter optimization of tap structures is also correlated with the variation of tapping forces. Therefore, the study of tapping forces is necessary in developing new style taps. Several experiments about some novel carbide taps are performed on a vertical machining center by a Kistler dynamometer system in blind tapping both gray cast iron and ductile cast iron. And the variations of tapping forces are analyzed in tapping-in and tapping-out periods. It indicates that cutting forces hardly vary with the tap wear in tapping cast iron. Contrarily, tapping forces are closely correlated with the holding method. Besides, it also depends on the helix angle, the flute numbers and the plasticity of the work material to some extent. 展开更多

The effect of heat treatment mode on the microstructure of Fe-Cr-B cast iron alloys was investigated inthis paper by comparing the difference of precipitation patterns of secondary particles after thermal cycling treatment(TCT) with those after normal heat treatment (NHT). No obvious differences were found in precipitation patterns ofsecondary particles between TCT and NHT when experimental temperature was below Ar1. However, whentemperature was over Ar1, there were significant differences, with secondary particles prominently segregated at thegrain boundaries under TCT, while the particles evenly distributed in the matrix under NHT. The reason for themicrostructure differences could be associated with the development of non-equilibrium segregation of boron duringTCT. 展开更多

A series of austenitic cast iron samples with different compositions were cast and a part of nickel in the samples was replaced by manganese for economic reason. Erosion–corrosion tests were conducted under 2wt% sulfuric acid and 15wt% quartz sand. The results show that the matrix of cast irons remains austenite after a portion of nickel is replaced with manganese.(Fe,Cr)3C is a common phase in the cast irons, and nickel is the main alloying element in high-nickel cast iron; whereas,(Fe,Mn)3C is observed with the increased manganese content in low-nickel cast iron. Under erosion–corrosion tests, the weight-loss rates of the cast irons increase with increasing time. Wear plays a more important role than corrosion in determining the weight loss. It is indicated that the processes of weight loss for the cast irons with high and low nickel contents are different. The erosion resistance of the cast iron containing 7.29wt% nickel and 6.94wt% manganese is equivalent to that of the cast iron containing 13.29wt% nickel. 展开更多
