Our understanding of grain-level bursts of plasticity in polycrystals remains limited by current techniques.By employing a modified Synchrotron transmission X-ray Laue diffraction method(beam size larger than the grain size),we tracked grain rotations for the first 1%of tensile strain,in 4400 time steps. We indexed 33 grains and quantified the magnitude and frequency of intermittent bursts of grain rotation. We interpret these events in terms of bursts of plastic deformation. The events are highly coordinated amongst nearby grains, and their frequency and magnitude,as well as the number of grains participating, peaked at around the onset of full plasticity. At this point,7 out of the 10 indexed grains with orientations favorable for twinning showed significant drops in diffracted intensity(a mean value of 8%),due to twin induced re-orientation.For other orientations,20 out of 23 grains displayed bursts attributable to lattice dislocation glide(interpreted in terms of basal and prismatic <α> slip). The mean value of the magnitude of these bursts is∼0.08°,implying accumulated shear strains of the order of 3×10^(-3).These bursts,in many cases, were due to the activation of more than a single slip/twin system within the grain, and co-ordination amongst neighboring grains also involved collaboration between slip and twinning events. 展开更多

The effects and rules of the dimensionless parameterξon neutrino annihilation v+v→e^(-)+e^(+)dominated gamma-ray bursts are analysed and investigated within the context of black holes in asymptotic safety. We also computationally model photon orbits around black holes,as photons and neutrinos have the same geodesic equations near black holes. We show that the black hole shadow radius decreases with increasingξ.Calculations are made to determine the temperature of the accretion disk surrounding the black hole and the ratio Q/Q_(Newt)of energy deposition per unit time and compared to that of the Newtonian scenario. The accretion disk temperature peaks at a higher temperature due to quantum gravity corrections, which increases the probability of neutrino emission from the black hole.It is interesting to note that larger quantum gravity effects cause the ratio value to significantly decline. In the neutrinoantineutrino annihilation process, the energy deposition rate is sufficient even while the energy conversion is inhibited because of quantum corrections.Gamma-ray bursts might originate from the corrected annihilation process.Additionally,we examine the derivative dQ/dr about the star radius r.The findings demonstrate that the ratio is lowered by the black hole's quantum influence. The neutrino pair annihilation grows weaker the more prominent the influence of quantum gravity. 展开更多

Solar radio burst(SRB)is one of the main natural interference sources of Global Positioning System(GPS)signals and can reduce the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR),directly affecting the tracking performance of GPS receivers. In this paper,a tracking algorithm based on the adaptive Kalman filter(AKF)with carrier-to-noise ratio estimation is proposed and compared with the conventional second-order phase-locked loop tracking algo-rithms and the improved Sage-Husa adaptive Kalman filter(SHAKF)algorithm. It is discovered that when the SRBs occur, the improved SHAKF and the AKF with carrier-to-noise ratio estimation enable stable tracking to loop signals. The conven-tional second-order phase-locked loop tracking algorithms fail to track the receiver signal. The standard deviation of the carrier phase error of the AKF with carrier-to-noise ratio estimation out-performs 50.51%of the improved SHAKF algorithm, showing less fluctuation and better stability. The proposed algorithm is proven to show more excellent adaptability in the severe envi-ronment caused by the SRB occurrence and has better tracking performance. 展开更多

Coal bursts are typically associated with highly stressed coal. Most bursts occur during retreat mining(longwall mining or pillar recovery) in highly stressed locations like the tailgate corner of the longwall panel.Others are associated with multiple seam interactions. However, a small but significant percentage of coal bursts have occurred during development or in outby locations unaffected by active mining. Most development bursts have been relatively small, but some have been highly destructive. No theory of coal bursts can be complete if it does not account for this type of event. This paper focusses on the development mining coal burst experience in the US, putting it into the context of the entire US coal burst database. The first documented development coal burst occurred almost exactly 100 years ago during slope drivage at the Sunnyside Mine in Utah.Sunnyside subsequently had a long history of bursts, mainly during retreat mining but also during development.Several Colorado mines have also experienced multiple development bursts. Many, but by no means all, of the development bursts in these western US coalfields have been associated with known faults. In the Central Appalachian coalfields, most development bursts have occurred in multiple seam situations. In some of these cases, however, there was no retreat mining in either seam. The paper closes with some lessons from this history, with implications for preventing such events in the future. 展开更多

A coal burst is defined as a rapid expulsion of coal(and potentially gas) from the boundary of the roadway. Rock and coal fractures together with micro seismic vibration is a common occurrence during mining, however, it is very uncommon for coal and rock to be propelled into the roadway. Irrespective, such occurrences do occur and appear to require significantly more energy than is available from strain energy release during coal cutting. The sources of energy which can contribute to the propulsion of coal from the face or ribs are typically strain energy from the surrounding ground, seismic energy from a rapid rupture of the ground in the vicinity, or rapid expansion of gas from within the burst source area. The aim of this paper is to briefly review the bursts which may be related to strain energy, seismic energy and gas energy. 展开更多

Since the successful launch of NASA's dedicated gamma-ray burst (GRB) mission, Swift, the study of cosmological GRBs has entered a new era. Here I review the rapid observational and theoretical progress in this dynamical research field during the first two-year of the Swift mission, focusing on how observational breakthroughs have revolutionized our understanding of the physical origins of GRBs. Besides summarizing how Swift helps to solve some pre-Swift mysteries, I also list some outstanding problems raised by the Swift observations. An outlook of GRB science in the future, especially in the GLAST era, is briefly discussed. 展开更多

They are a particular hazard because they typically occur without warning. During the past 2 years three US coal miners were killed in two coal bursts, following a 6-year period during which there were zero burst fatalities. This paper puts the US experience in the context of worldwide research into coal bursts. It focuses on two major longwall mining coalfields which have struggled with bursts for decades. The Utah experience displays many of the "classic" burst characteristics, including deep cover, strong roof and floor rock, and a direct association between bursts and mining activity. In Colorado, the longwalls of the North Fork Valley (NFV) also work at great depth, but their roof and floor strengths are moderate, and most bursts have occurred during entry development or in headgates, bleeders, or other outby locations. The NFV bursts also are more likely to be associated with geologic structures and large magnitude seismic events. The paper provides a detailed case history to illustrate the experience in each of these coalfields. The paper closes with a brief discussion of how US longwalls have managed the burst risk. 展开更多

Convective burst(CB) characteristics at distinct stages of a rapidly intensified Typhoon Mujigae(2015), are investigated based on a 72-h simulation. The spatial features show that almost all CB elements develop in the eyewall. The number of CBs in the inner-core region within a 100 km radius—which account for a large proportion of the total CBs, with a sharp increase about 6 h before the onset of rapid intensification(RI)—provides some indication of the RI of the typhoon. The CBs during pre-RI and RI are examined from dynamic and thermodynamic viewpoints. The combination of lower-level convergent inflow and upper-level divergent outflow pushes a relay-race-like transmission of convective activity, favorable for the development of deep convection. A double warm-core structure is induced by the centripetal outflow sinking and warming associated with CBs, which directly accelerates RI by a sudden decrease in hydrostatic pressure. By utilizing the convection activity degree(CAD) index derived from the local total energy anomaly, a correlation formula between CBs and CAD is deduced.Furthermore, an intense CAD(ICAD) signal threshold(with a value equal to 100) to predict CBs is obtained. It is verified that this ICAD threshold is effective for estimating the occurrence of a CB episode and predicting RI of a typhoon. Therefore, this threshold may be a valuable tool for identifying CB episodes and forecasting rapidly intensified typhoons. 展开更多

The phenomenon of gamma-ray burst (GRB) spectral lags is very common, but a definitive explanation has not yet been given. From a sample of 82 GRB pulses we find that the spectral lags are correlated with the pulse widths, however, there is no correlation between the relative spectral lags and the relative pulse widths. We suspect that the correlations between spectral lags and pulse widths might be caused by the Lorentz factor of the GRBs concerned. Our analysis on the relative quantities suggests that the intrinsic spectral lag might reflect other aspect of pulses than the aspect associated with the dynamical time of shocks or that associated with the time delay due to the curvature effect. 展开更多

A systematic study on the early X-ray afterglows of both optically bright and dark gamma-ray bursts (B-GRBs and D-GRBs) observed by Swift is presented. Our sample includes 25 GRBs of which 13 are B-GRBs and 12 are D-GRBs. Our results show that the distributions of the X-ray afterglow fluxes (Fx), the gamma-ray fluxes (Sγ), and the ratio (Rγ,x) are similar for the two kinds of GRBs, that any observed differences should be simply statistical fluctuation. These results indicate that the progenitors of the two kinds of GRBs are of the same population with comparable total energies of explosion. The suppression of optical emission in the D-GRBs should result from circumburst but not from their central engine. 展开更多

In 2017,one of the international authorities on coal bursts,Mark Christopher, published a paper entitled"Coal bursts that occur during development:A rock mechanics enigma",in which several relevant technical issues were identified. This paper outlines what is considered to be a credible,first-principles,mechanistic explanation for these three current development coal burst conundrums by reference to early published coal testing work examining the significance of a lack of"constraint"to coal stability and an understanding of how very specific structural geology and other geological features can logically cause this to occur in situ, albeit on a statistically very rare basis. This basic model is examined by reference to published information pertaining to the development coal-burst that occurred at the Austar Coal Mine in New South Wales,Australia,in 2014 and from the Sunnyside District in Utah, the United States. The"cause and effect"model for development of coal bursts presented also offers a meaningful explanation for the statistical improbability for what are nonetheless potentially highly-destructive events, being able to explain the statistical rarity being just as important to the credibility of the model as explaining the local conditions associated with burst events. The model could also form the basis for a robust, riskbased approach utilising a"hierarchy of controls",to the operational management of the development coal burst threat.Specifically, the use of pre-mining predictions for likely burst-prone and non-burstprone areas, the use of the mine layout to avoid or at least minimise mining within burst-prone areas if appropriate, and finally the development of an operational Trigger Action Response Plan(TARP)that reduces the likelihood of inadvertent roadway development into a burst-prone area without suitable safety controls already being in place. 展开更多

In order to study the rules of rock bursts caused by faults by means of mechanical analysis of a roof rock-mass balanced structure and numerical simulation about fault slip destabilization, the effect of coal mining operation on fault plane stresses and slip displacement were studied. The results indicate that the slip displacement sharply increases due to the decrease of normal stress and the increase of shear stress at the fault plane when the working face advances from the footwall to the fault itself, which may induce a fault rock burst. However, this slip displacement will be very small due to the increase of normal stress and the decrease of shear stress when the working face advances from the hanging wall to the fault itself, which results in a very small risk of a fault rock burst. 展开更多

We study the statistical properties of the highest pulses within individual gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). A wavelet package analysis technique and a developed pulse-finding algorithm have been applied to identify the highest pulses from burst profiles observed by BATSE on board CGRO from 1991 April 21 to 1999 January 26. The statistical light curves of the highest pulses in four energy channels have been derived by an aligning method, which illustrate the temporal evolution of the pulse emission. Our result that narrower pulses go with higher energies is consistent with previous findings. By normalizing both the pulse durations and counts to unity, 'characteristic' profiles of the highest pulses in the four channels are also derived. The four characteristic profiles are turned out to be almost the same, thus strongly support the previous conclusion that the temporal profiles in different energy channels are self-similar and the previous conjecture on GRB pulses, implying that the emission process is similar at different energies. The cosmological time dilation effect is examined by investigating the relationship between the pulse flux and pulse duration. An anti-correlation between the two was found, which agrees with the expectation of the cosmological time dilation effect. Also, the evolution of the pulse duration with the observational epoch is studied. The result shows that the pulse duration tends to be shorter in later epochs. This trend cannot be explained by the present theoretical models, and may represent a great challenge to current theories. 展开更多

As one class of the most important objects in the universe, magnetars can produce a lot of different frequency bursts including X-ray bursts. In Cai et al.,75 X-ray bursts produced by magnetar SGR J1935+2154 during an active period in 2020 are published, including the duration and net photon counts of each burst, and waiting time based on the trigger time difference. In this paper,we utilize the power-law model,dN(x)/dx∝(x+x_0)~((-α)_x),to fit the cumulative distributions of these parameters. It can be found that all the cumulative distributions can be well fitted, which can be interpreted by a self-organizing criticality theory.Furthermore,we check whether this phenomenon still exists in different energy bands and find that there is no obvious evolution. These findings further confirm that the X-ray bursts from magnetars are likely to be generated by some self-organizing critical process, which can be explained by a possible magnetic reconnection scenario in magnetars. 展开更多

Blasting and breaking of hard roof are main inducing causes of rock bursts in coal mines with danger of rock burst, and it is important to find out the frequency spectrum distribution laws of these dynamic stress waves and rock burst waves for researching the mechanism of rock burst. In this paper,Fourier transform as a micro-seismic signal conversion method of amplitude-time character to amplitude-frequency character is used to analyze the frequency spectrum characters of micro-seismic signal of blasting, hard roof breaking and rock bursts induced by the dynamic disturbance in order to find out the difference and relativity of different signals. The results indicate that blasting and breaking of hard roof are high frequency signals, and the peak values of dominant frequency of the signals are single. However, the results indicate that the rock bursts induced by the dynamic disturbance are low frequency signals, and there are two obvious peak values in the amplitude-frequency curve witch shows that the signals of rock bursts are superposition of low frequency signals and high frequency signals. The research conclusions prove that dynamic disturbance is necessary condition for rock bursts, and the conclusions provide a new way to research the mechanism of rock bursts. 展开更多

Using 64 ms count data of long gamma-ray bursts (T90 〉 2.6 s), we analyze the quantity named relative spectral lag (RSL), T31/FWHM(1). We investigated in detail all the correlations between the RSL and other parameters for a sample of nine long bursts, using the general cross-correlation technique that includes the lag between two different energy bands. We conclude that the distribution of RSLs is normal and has a mean value of 0.1; that the RSLs are weakly correlated with the FWHM, the asymmetry, peak flux (Fp), peak energy (Ep) and spectral indexes (α and β), while they are uncorrelated with τ31, the hardness- ratio (HR31) and the peak time (tm). Our important discovery is that redshift (z) and peak luminosity (Lp) are strongly correlated with the RSL, which can be measured easily and directly, making the RSL a good redshift and peak luminosity indicator. 展开更多

In order to reach a large, untapped reserve of high-quality coal,D8 Cloverlick Mine proposed to mine a corridor nearly 600 m deep beneath the Benham Spur of Black Mountain,Kentucky’s highest peak.D8 Cloverlick Mine was extracting the Owl seam, but the corridor’s route lay approximately 20 m above century-old mine workings in the C–(Darby)seam.Adding to the concern, three serious coal bursts had recently occurred in nearby Owl seam workings.Maps of the old workings seemed to indicate that the underlying C–seam had been fully extracted. However, two of the coal bursts had occurred above areas where the C–Seam was also shown as mined out.Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA)Technical Support therefore investigated the records of past mining to better understand the old mine maps.Underground conditions observed in current Owl seam workings were also compared with the maps of the old C–seam workings. The study concluded that the presence of hazardous underlying remnants could not be ruled out.To mitigate the burst risk,D8 Cloverlick Mine adopted a strategy of stress probe drilling.A self-propelled coal drill was used to auger 11.5-m-long,small diameter holes in advance of mining. As each hole was drilled, the cuttings were measured to detect the presence of highly stressed coal.Ultimately the crossing was successfully completed without incident. 展开更多
