Theoretical insights into the hydrogen peroxide oxidation and reduction reactions on low-index Pt surfaces

Hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))oxidation and reduction reactions(HPOR/HPRR)are pivotal in various innovative electrochemical energy conversion devices.A comprehensive understanding of these mechanisms is critical for catalyst design and performance improvement in these applications.In this work,we systematically investigate the HPOR/HPRR mechanisms on low-index Pt surfaces,specifically Pt(111),Pt(100)and Pt(110),through density functional theory(DFT)calculations combined with the computational hydrogen electrode(CHE)model.For HPOR,all the low-index Pt surfaces exhibit a unified potential-determining step(PDS)involving the electrochemical oxidation of hydroperoxyl intermediates(HOO*).The binding free energy of HOO*(Δ_(GHOO*))emerges as an activity descriptor,with Pt(110)exhibiting the highest HPOR activity.The HPRR mechanism follows a chem-electrochemical(C-EC)pathway.The rate-determining step(RDS)of HPRR is either the cleavage of the HO-OH bond(chemical)or the reduction of HO(electrochemical),depending on their respective activation energies.These activation energies are functions of the HO*binding free energy,Δ_(GHO*),establishingΔ_(GHO*)as the descriptor for HPRR activity prediction.Pt(111)and Pt(100)are identified as the most active HPRR catalysts among the studied metal surfaces,although they still experience a significant overpotential.The scaling relationship betweenΔ_(GHOO*)andΔ_(GHO*)reveals a thermodynamic coupling of HPOR and HPRR,explaining their occurrence on Pt surfaces.These findings provide important insights and activity descriptors for both HPOR and HPRR,providing valuable guidance for the design of electrocatalysts in H_(2)O_(2)-related energy applications and fuel cells. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Dry eye disease(DED)is a multifactorial ocular surface disorder with rising prevalence.It is closely related to systemic health and psychological factors,such as sleep and mood disorders,which significantly impact the quality of life of patients.AIM To explore the correlations between ocular surface function,sleep quality,and anxiety/depression in patients with DED.METHODS This was a cross-sectional investigative study that included 358 patients with DED between January 2022 and January 2025.Ocular surface was assessed using the ocular surface disease index(OSDI),tear film break-up time,fluorescein staining score,and Schirmer I test.The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),and Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS)were used to evaluate sleep quality and anxiety/depression levels.Correlation and linear regression analyses were used to explore the relationships.RESULTS The mean PSQI score of the patients was 9.94±2.18;the mean SAS score was 47.30±4.90,and the mean SDS score was 50.08±5.52.These suggested a prevalence of sleep and psychological abnormalities.There was a significant correlation between the indicators of ocular surface function(OSDI,tear film break-up time,fluorescein staining,and Schirmer I test)and PSQI,SAS,and SDS scores(P<0.05).Moreover,multiple regression revealed that age≥50 years(β=1.55,P=0.029),PSQI scores(β=0.58,P<0.001),SAS scores(β=0.17,P=0.017),and SDS scores(β=0.15,P=0.019)were independent predictors of the OSDI scores.CONCLUSION Ocular surface function in patients with DED is closely related to sleep quality and anxiety/depression,emphasizing the need for holistic clinical management. 展开更多

Latent and sensible heat fluxes in a very unstable atmospheric surface layer and weak-wind conditions in a tropical coastal ocean

The atmospheric surface layer of the tropical coastal ocean is commonly very unstable and experiences weakwind conditions.How the latent(LE)and sensible(H)heat fluxes behave under such conditions are unclear because of the lack of observation stations in the tropics.Thus,this study aims to analyze LE and H and the microclimate parameters influencing them.The authors deployed an eddy covariance system in a tropical coastal region for seven months.The microclimate parameters investigated were wind speed(U),vapor pressure deficit(Δe),temperature difference(ΔT),wind-vapor pressure deficit(UΔe),wind-temperature difference(UΔT),and atmospheric stability(z/L),where z is height and L is the Monin–Obukhov length.On the daily time scale,the results show that LE was more associated with U thanΔe,while H was more related toΔT than U.Cross-wavelet analysis revealed the strong coherence in the LE-U relationship for periods between one and two days,and for H–ΔT,0.5 to 1 day.Correlation and regression analyses confirmed the time series analyses results,where strong positive correlation coefficients(r)were obtained between LE and U(r=0.494)and H andΔT(r=0.365).Compared to other water bodies,the transfer coefficient of moisture(CE N)was found to be small(=0.40×10^(-3))and independent of stability;conversely,the transfer coefficient of heat(CH N)was closer to literature values(=1.00×10^(-3))and a function of stability. 展开更多

Droplets Self-Draining on the Horizontal Slippery Surface for Real-Time Anti-/De-Icing

Undesired ice accumulation on infrastructure and transportation systems leads to catastrophic events and significant economic losses.Although various anti-icing surfaces with photothermal effects can initially prevent icing,any thawy droplets remaining on the horizontal surface can quickly re-freezing once the light diminishes.To address these challenges,we have developed a self-draining slippery surface(SDSS)that enables the thawy droplets to self-remove on the horizontal surface,thereby facilitating real-time anti-icing with the aid of sunlight(100 m W cm^(-2)).This is achieved by sandwiching a thin pyroelectric layer between slippery surface and photothermal film.Due to the synergy between the photothermal and pyroelectric layers,the SDSS not only maintains a high surface temperature of 19.8±2.2℃at the low temperature(-20.0±1.0℃),but also generates amount of charge through thermoelectric coupling.Thus,as cold droplets dropped on the SDSS,electrostatic force pushes the droplets off the charged surface because of the charge transfer mechanism.Even if the surface freezes overnight,the ice can melt and drain off the SDSS within 10 min of exposure to sunlight at-20.0±1.0℃,leaving a clean surface.This work provides a new perspective on the anti-icing system in the real-world environments. 展开更多

Surface flux–induced salinity change and its effects on ocean stratification in response to global warming

Global warming induced by increased CO_(2) has caused marked changes in the ocean.Previous estimates of ocean salinity change in response to global warming have considerable ambiguity,largely attributable to the diverse sensitivities of surface fluxes.This study utilizes data from the Flux-Anomaly-Forced Model Intercomparison Project to investigate how ocean salinity responds to perturbations of surface fluxes.The findings indicate the emergence of a sea surface salinity(SSS)dipole pattern predominantly in the North Atlantic and Pacific fresh pools,driven by surface flux perturbations.This results in an intensification of the“salty gets saltier and fresh gets fresher”SSS pattern across the global ocean.The spatial pattern amplification(PA)of SSS under global warming is estimated to be approximately 11.5%,with surface water flux perturbations being the most significant contributor to salinity PA,accounting for 8.1% of the change after 70 years in experiments since pre-industrial control(piControl).Notably,the zonal-depth distribution of salinity in the upper ocean exhibits lighter seawater above the denser water,with bowed isopycnals in the upper 400 m.This stable stratification inhibits vertical mixing of salinity and temperature.In response to the flux perturbations,there is a strong positive feedback due to consequent freshening.It is hypothesized that under global warming,an SSS amplification of 7.2%/℃ and a mixed-layer depth amplification of 12.5%/℃ will occur in the global ocean.It suggests that the salinity effect can exert a more stable ocean to hinder the downward transfer of heat,which provides positive feedback to future global warming. 展开更多

A bulk superconductor hosting intrinsic surface superconductivity provides a unique platform for exploring Majorana bound states.Trigonal γ-PtBi_(2),a superconductor,is a promising candidate,as both surface superconducting gaps and topological surface states have been observed.However,the simultaneous presence of bulk and surface superconductivity has remained unresolved.In this study,we directly visualize coexisting bulk and surface superconducting gaps in trigonal PtBi2 using ultra-low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy.The bulk gap,Δ,is∼0.053 meV,with a critical temperature(T_(c))of∼0.5K and a critical field below 0.01 T,accompanied by a vortex lattice and vortex bound states and yielding a coherence length of∼200 nm.Remarkably,certain surface regions exhibit a much larger gap(Δ)of∼0.42 meV,persisting up to a T_(c)value of∼3K and surviving magnetic fields of up to 2 T,yet lacking a static vortex lattice.This coexistence of robust surface and bulk superconductivity establishes γ-PtBi_(2)as a unique platform for exploring the interplay between bulk and surface Cooper pairings in topological superconductors. 展开更多

The built-in electric field(BIEF)aroused by the variation in charge distribution between the surface and bulk phase of carbon nitride can improve carrier dynamics.Herein,phosphorus(P)and benzene ringdoped C_(3)N_(5)nanosheets(PPCN_(2))were synthesized by a facile method and demonstrated excellent performance in the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics.Benzene ring replaced the triazine part of the heptazine unit,expanding the π-conjugated structure of the system,promoting electron delocalization,and enhancing the light-absorbing property.P doping led to the creation of an additional donor state within the P 2p band,facilitating the charge separation and lengthening the transport distance of electron-hole pairs.Additionally,the intermediate state gap created in the Urbach tail further strengthened photon absorption and improved effective electron capture.XPS with Ar ion etching at different depths verified the significant potential difference and large dipole moment caused by different doping levels of surface and bulk phase,resulting in a strong BIEF inside the PPCN_(2).KPFM,SPV,and DFT calculations confirmed the strong BIEF in PPCN_(2).EPR,rotating disk electrode(RRDE)and in situ infrared drift(DRIFT)spectroscopy confirmed the reactive oxygen species and the two-step one-electron reduction reaction mechanism during the photodegradation process.This work provides a new perspective for the study of improving the photocatalytic performance of C_(3)N_(5)by inducing the BIEF which arose from the differences in electronic structure and charge distribution on the surface and bulk phase caused by molecular doping. 展开更多

Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 bulk metallic glass (BMG) rods were abraded to different surface roughnesses using different types of waterproof abrasive papers and sometimes polishing pastes, and the compressive deformation behavior was examined. The results show that the yield strength of the BMG is hardly affected while the compressive plasticity increases from 2.3% to 4.5% with decreasing the surface roughness. Observation of the fractured samples under a scanning electron microscope indicates that the rise in plasticity is accompanied with an increase in shear band density. The results suggest that it is necessary to reduce the surface roughness of BMGs for achieving a large plasticity. 展开更多

Based on the solution to the 2D Poisson's equation, the model gives the influence on the surface electrical field of the drain bias and structure parameters such as the doping concentration,the depth and the position of the p-top region, the thickness and the doping concentration of the drift region, and the substrate doping concentration. The dependence of breakdown voltage on the length and doping concentration of the drift region is also calculated. Further more,an effective way to gain the optimum high-voltage is also proposed. All analytical results are verified by simulation results obtained by MEDICI and previous experimental data,showing the validity of the model presented here. 展开更多

Magnesium(Mg)alloys are generally used in light-weight structural applications due to their higher specific strength.However,the usage of these Mg alloys is limited due to their poor formability at room temperature,which is attributed to lower count of slip systems associated with the hcp crystal structure.To address these limitations,several new magnesium alloys and also many processing strategies have been developed and reported in the literature.ZE41 Mg is an alloy with significant quantities of zinc(Zn)and rare earth(RE)elements and has emerged as a promising material for aerospace,automotive,electronics,biomedical and many other industries.To make this alloy more competitive and viable,it should possess better mechanical and corrosion properties.Hence,the current paper reviews the effect of bulk mechanical processing on grain refinement,microstructural modification,and corresponding changes in the mechanical behaviour of ZE41Mg alloy.Further,the effect of various surface modification techniques on altering the surface microstructure and surface properties such as wear and corrosion are also briefly summarized and presented.This review also discusses the challenges and the future perspectives in developing high-performing ZE41 Mg alloys. 展开更多

Deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate damage performance at 351 nm is studied on a large-aperture laser system. Bulk and rear-surface damage are initiated under the 3ω fluences of 6.T J/cm2 and 33/cm2, and show different growth characteristics under multiple laser irradiations with the fluence of 6 J/cm2. The size and number of bulk damage keep unchanged once initiated. However, surface damage size also does not grow, while surface damage number increases linearly with laser shots. Different damage thresholds and growth behaviors suggest different formations of bulk and surface damage precursors. The cause of surface damage is supposed to be near-surface absorbing particles buried under the sol-gel coating. 展开更多

The organic matter (OM) preserved in Arctic Ocean sediments is of great importance to the global carbon budget. How-ever, works that apply multiple proxies to determine the distribution and concentration of organic carbon (OC) in the surface sedi-ments of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas remain limited. Here a multiproxy approach based on bulk OM parameters and the branched vs. isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index was used to investigate the distribution and sources of OM in the surface sediments of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas. Binary and ternary mixing models were applied to trace the contribution of different OC sources to the total OC in the study area. The δ13C values of the sediments provided by the binary model showed that the proportion of terrestrial OC fell in the range of 27.4%–79.8% (46.2% on average). The BIT index returned the lowest fraction (4.8%–27.3%, 12.0% on average). The ternary mixing model was employed to determine the plant-, soil-, and marine-derived fractions of the total OM. The ternary model showed that 11.5%±6.3%, 31.4%±9.5%, and 57.1%±12.4% of OM in the sediment of the study area was derived from soil, plants, and marine sources, respectively. The differences in OM composition between the west and east sides of the Chukchi Sea were controlled by OM inputs from key water masses (i.e., Anadyr Water and Alaska Coastal Water), river discharge, and the nutrient supply from the Pacific inflow that supports marine productivity. 展开更多

Photocatalytic degradation of Methyl Blue was tested under visible light irradiation, the results showed that 1 wt.% Na+bulk-doped WO3 performed better, with higher photoactivity than surface-doped WO3. Photoelectrochemical characterization revealed the differences in the photocatalytic process for surface doping and bulk doping. Uniform bulk doping could generate more electron–hole pairs, while minimizing the chance of electron–hole recombination. Some bulk properties such as the bandgap, Fermi level and band position could also be adjusted by bulk doping, but not by surface doping. 展开更多

In this work,the influences of surface layer slurry at different temperatures(10℃,14℃,18℃,22℃)on wax patterns deformation,shrinkage,slurry coating characteristics,and the surface quality of the casting were investigated by using a single factor variable method.The surface morphologies of the shell molds produced by different temperatures of the surface(first)layer slurries were observed via electron microscopy.Furthermore,the microscopic composition of these shell molds was obtained by EDS,and the osmotic effect of the slurry on the wax patterns at different temperatures was also assessed by the PZ-200 Contact Angle detector.The forming reasons for the surface cracks and holes of thick and large ZTC4 titanium alloy by investment casting were analyzed.The experimental results show that the surface of the shell molds prepared by the surface layer slurry with a low temperature exhibits noticeable damage,which is mainly due to the poor coating performance and the serious expansion and contraction of wax pattern at low temperatures.The second layer shell material(SiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3))immerses into the crack area of the surface layer,contacts and reacts with the molten titanium to form surface cracks and holes in the castings.With the increase of the temperature of surface layer slurry,the damage to the shell surface tends to weaken,and the composition of the shell molds'surface becomes more uniform with less impurities.The results show that the surface layer slurry at 22℃is evenly coated on the surface of the wax patterns with appropriate thickness,and there is no surface shell mold rupture caused by sliding slurry after sand leaching.The surface layer slurry temperature is consistent with the wax pattern temperature and the workshop temperature,so there is no damage of the surface layer shell caused by expansion and contraction.Therefore,the shell mold prepared by the surface layer slurry at this temperature has good integrity,isolating the contact between the low inert shell material and the titanium liquid effectively,and the ZTC4 titanium alloy cylinder casting prepared by this shell mold is smooth,without cracks and holes. 展开更多

The heat influence zone of femtosecond laser ablated with a laser energy of 100 μJ exhibits a ripple-like feather, while a porous structure appears on the surface of the specimen ablated by a 200 μJ femtosecond laser. The contents of Ti, Zr, and Pd on the ablated surface decrease and that of Cu increases with increasing laser energy. The crystallization process occurs on the glass alloy specimens during femtosecond laser ablation, and the crystallinity of a 100 μJ femtosecond laser-ablated specimen is greater than that of a 200 μJ femtosecond laser-ablated one. 展开更多

The Nickel-rich layered cathode materials charged to 4.5 V can obtain a specific capacity of more than 200 m Ah g^(-1).However,the nickel-rich layered cathode materials suffer from the severe capacity fade during high-voltage cycling,which is related to the phase transformation and the surface sides reactions caused by the lattice oxygen evolution.Here,the simultaneous construction of a Mg,Ti-based surface integrated layer and bulk doping through Mg,Ti surface treatment could suppress the lattice oxygen evolution of Nirich material at deep charging.More importantly,Mg and Ti are co-doped into the particles surface to form an Mg_(2)TiO_(4) and Mg_(0.5–x)Ti_(2–y)(PO_(4))_(3) outer layer with Mg and Ti vacancies.In the constructed surface integrated layer,the reverse electric field in the Mg_(2)TiO_(4) effectively suppressed the outward migration of the lattice oxygen anions,while Mg_(0.5–x)Ti_(2–y)(PO_(4))_(3) outer layer with high electronic conductivity and good lithium ion conductor could effectively maintained the stability of the reaction interface during highvoltage cycling.Meanwhile,bulk Mg and Ti co-doping can mitigate the migration of Ni ions in the bulk to keep the stability of transition metal–oxygen(M-O)bond at deep charging.As a result,the NCM@MTP cathode shows excellent long cycle stability at high-voltage charging,which keep high capacity retention of 89.3%and 84.3%at 1 C after 200 and 100 cycles under room and elevated temperature of 25 and 55°C,respectively.This work provides new insights for manipulating the surface chemistry of electrode materials to suppress the lattice oxygen evolution at high charging voltage. 展开更多

By testing the number increase and size growth of surface and bulk laser induced damage in KDP and DKDP crystals, we observe different growth characteristics of surface and bulk damage under multiple 355nm laser irradiations. The size of the surface damage grows exponentially, but that of the bulk damage does not grow. In contrast, the bulk damage number increases, but that of surface damage does not increase significantly. The serrated plastic flow,microstructure and residual stress of a Zr_(55)Cu_(30)Ni_5Al_(10) bulk metallic glass(BMG)undergone surface mechanical attrition treatment(SMAT)have been investigated by a combination of compression tests with scanning electron microscopy(SEM),high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM)and the incremental hole-drilling strain-gage method.It is found that SMAT leads to various microstructural modifications and residual stress distribution in the surface layers of the Zrbased BMG due to the mechanically-induced nanocrystallization and generation of shear bands.As a result,the BMG alloy exhibits a remarkable work-hardening like behavior and significant increase of plastic strain from less than 1%to 15%,and its plastic deformation dynamics yields a power-law distribution of shear avalanches.Based upon the analysis of the experimental results,it is indicated that this can be connected to the SMAT-induced microstructural modifications and the resulting residual compressive stress in the Zr-based BMG. 展开更多

A new process for lamination of polymer films by 'bulk surface photografting' has been developed. The chemical component of the invention is that the curing of reactive solution between two substrates is initiated by the surface free radicals produced by aromatic ketones and surface-hydrogen of substrates. Using the new approach, two or more polymer films are bonded together by a grafted polymer network which is grafted to adjacent substrate surfaces. The technique has been applied to film substrates of different polymers such as polyolefins, polyesters, and polyamides which have abstractable hydrogens at the surface. The photolaminated film composites containing carrier films and an intermediate functional film of low permeability give strong laminates with high barrier properties, e.g, for oxygen and air. 展开更多

The dispersion relations of normal modes in the layered constructions are studied. In the frequency region with negative permittivity, we investigate the normal modes near the air-metal and the air-matematerial interfaces and compare them. An extra bulk mode appearing in a pass band of two media is found near the air-matematerial interface, which is different from the air-metal case. Moreover, the bulk mode will be further proved by the attenuated total reflection (ATR) technique, in which the coupling between the incident electromagnetic waves and the normal modes is studied. For p-polarized incident waves, the ATR spectra based on the Otto and the Kretschmann configurations are obtained numerically, where the dips present the excitations of the surface and bulk modes. Furthermore, we also discuss the influences of the middle layer thickness, the incident angle and the damping term on the reflection in detail. It is found that the coupling frequencies and the maximum strength are strongly dependent on the above media parameters. 展开更多
