This article presents the bubble breakup in viscous liquids at a microfluidic T-junction. Nitrogen is used as the gas phase, and glycerol-water mixtures with different mass concentration of glycerol as the liquid phase. The evolution of the gas−liquid interface during bubble breakup at the microfluidic T-junction is explored. The thinning of the bubble neck includes the squeezing stage and the rapid pinch-off stage. In the squeezing stage, the power law relation is found between the minimum width of the bubble neck and the time, and the values of exponents α1 and α2 are influenced by the viscous force. The values of pre-factors m_(1) and m_(2) are negatively correlated with the capillary number. In the rapid pinch-off stage, the thinning of the bubble neck is predominated by the surface tension, and the minimum width of the bubble neck can be scaled with the remaining time as power-law. The propagation of the bubble tip can be characterized by the power law between the movement distance and the time, with decreasing exponent as increased liquid viscosity.展开更多

The SIMPLER method is used to solve the two-dimensional (2D) unsteady axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations for both the drop and the ambient gas flow. The level set method is applied to capturing the liquid/gas interface. Through calculation are obtained four typical breakup modes--oscillation, bag breakup, sheet stripping breakup and shear breakup governed by four non-dimensional numbers which are gas Weber number (Weg), liquid Reynolds number (Rel), gas Reynolds number (Reg) and density ratio (γ). Their effects upon each mode are analyzed. The results indicate that among the four numbers, Weg is of the highest importance with Rel, Reg and γfollowing up. By widening the range of the density ratio up to 1 000, the breakup mode is discovered to be so complicated that a new one called multimode breakup mode turns up. This mode contains the shearing breakup and piercing breakup, which successively happen. The calculation results agree well with what is observed from the experiments.展开更多

An abundance of sedimentary earthquake records is preserved in the Chuanlinggou, Tuanshanzi and Gaoyuzhuang formations in the Mesoproterozoic Changcheng System (1800-1400 Ma) and in the Mesoproterozoic Wumishan Formation of the Jixian System (1400-1000 Ma). These earthquake records are characterized by various liquefied sand-veins, carbonate microspar and coarser spar veins, limestone dikes, liquefied breccia and various forms of liquefied contorted bedding. This deformation is always associated with synsedimentary faults and igneous activity. 2. Three liquefaction models for soft carbonate sediments are recognized, including liquefaction in laminated carbonate rocks, liquefaction in thin-bedded carbonates and large-scale liquefaction along huge carbonate dikes. 3. Based on the record of earthquake and volcanic activities, the Sino-Korean Plate experienced at least twice intraplate breakups. One occurred between 1800-1400 Ma, and the other occurred at about 1200 Ma. The last breakup resulted in formation of the Yan-Liao aulacogen, a tectonic zone characterized by deeper material vibrancy, active faults, major igneous activity and frequent earthquakes.展开更多

Conventionally, two forces have been considered: the push by mantle plumes from the sub-continental mantle which is called the active force for breakup, and the dragging force from oceanic subduction retreat which is called the passive force for breakup. However, the relative importance of these two forces is unclear. Here we model the supercontinent breakup coupled with global mantle convection in order to address this question. Our global model features a spherical harmonic degree-2 structure, which includes a major subduction girdle and two large upwelling(superplume) systems. Based on this global mantle structure,we examine the distribution of extensional stress applied to the supercontinent by both subsupercontinent mantle upwellings and subduction retreat at the supercontinent peripheral. Our results show that:(1) at the center half of the supercontinent, plume push stress is ~3 times larger than the stress induced by subduction retreat;(2) an average hot anomaly of no higher than 50 K beneath the supercontinent can produce a push force strong enough to cause the initialization of supercontinent breakup;(3) the extensional stress induced by subduction retreat concentrates on a ~600 km wide zone on the boundary of the supercontinent, but has far less impact to the interior of the supercontinent. We therefore conclude that although circum-supercontinent subduction retreat assists supercontinent breakup, sub-supercontinent mantle upwelling is the essential force.展开更多

As J(e) > 1, the axisymmetric disturbance mode is most unstable; and when J(e) < 1, the asymmetric disturbances come into being, their growth rate increases with the decrease of J(e), till one of them becomes the most unstable disturbance. The breakup of a low-speed liquid jet results from the developing of axisymmetric disturbances, whose instability is produced by the surface tension; while the atomization of a high-speed Liquid jet is brought about by the evolution of nonaxisymmetric disturbance, whose instability is caused by the aerodynamic force on the interface between the jet and the ambient gas.展开更多

In this paper, 62-year NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data were employed to investigate the distinction between early and late SPVB. The results showed that the anomalous circulation signals extending from the stratosphere to the troposphere were reversed before and after early SPVB, while the stratospheric signals were consistent before and after the onset of late SPVB. Arctic Oscillation (AO) evolution during the life cycle of SPVB also demonstrated that the negative AO signal can propagate downward after early SPVB. Such downward AO signals could be identified in both geopotential height and temperature anomalies. After the AO signal reached the lower troposphere, it influenced the Aleutian Low and Siberian High in the troposphere, leading to a weak winter monsoon and large-scale warming at mid latitudes in Asia. Compared to early SPVB, downward propagation was not evident in late SPVB. The high-latitude tropospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere was affected by early SPVB, causing it to enter a summer circulation pattern earlier than in late SPVB years.展开更多

In order to investi...Supercavitation in the diesel nozzle increases the instability of droplets in part due to the two-phase mixture, while the effect of cavitation bubbles on the instability of drops is still unclear. In order to investigate the breakup of cavitation bubbles within the diesel droplet, a new mathematical model describing the disturbance growth rate of the diesel bubble instability is developed. The new mathematical model is applied to predict the effects of fluids viscosity on the stability of cavitation bubbles. The predicted values reveal that the comprehensive effect of fluids viscosity makes cavitation bubbles more stable. Compared with the viscosities of air and cavitation bubble, the diesel droplet's viscosity plays a dominant role on the stability of cavitation bubbles. Furthermore, based on the modified bubble breakup criterion, the effects of bubble growth speed, sound speed, droplet viscosity, droplet density, and bubble-droplet radius ratio on the breakup time and the breakup radius of cavitation bubbles are studied respectively. It is found that a bubble with large bubble-droplet radius ratio has the initial condition for breaking easily. For a given bubble-droplet radius ratio (0.2), as the bubble growth speed increases (from 2 m/s to 60 m/s), the bubble breakup time decreases(from 3.59 gs to 0.17 ps) rapidly. Both the greater diesel droplet viscosity and the greater diesel droplet density result in the increase of the breakup time. With increasing initial bubble-droplet radius ratio (from 0.2 to 0.8), the bubble breakup radius decreases (from 8.86 trn to 6.23 tm). There is a limited breakup radius for a bubble with a certain initial bubble-droplet radius ratio. The mathematical model and the modified bubble breakup criterion are helpful to improve the study on the breakup mechanism of the secondary diesel droplet under the condition of supercavitation.展开更多

The variation of wavelength, wave speed and amplitude of wave versus liquid pressure was obtained. The results indicate that the cone half angle increases with liquid pressure. The stripped half wavelength liquid fragment seems to break into a series of drops immediately and no obvious contraction from liquid fragment to ligament is seen. The recorded images also show that both short and long wavelength waves exist simultaneously, and influence the breakup of the conical liquid sheet. The result of this study is useful for the purpose of developing and verifying the atomization model of spray produced by a pressure swirl atomizer.展开更多

Researches and exploration in this sag have revealed many distinct features of the sag. This article reports its Idling history through backstripping of depth data of interpreted sequence boundaries. Maps of sediment rates of 10 sequences from 49 Ma to the present were constructed, showing the spatio-temporal variation of the sediment rate. Three stages of sediment infilling, 49-17.5 Ma, 17.5-10.5 Ma, and 10.5-0 Ma, were divided by abrupt changes of sedimentary patterns. If the breakup of the South China Sea took place at -30 Ma, significant post-breakup acceleration of sedimentation was observed at 17.5-15.5 Ma and 13.8-12.5 Ma, indicating acceleration of subsidence at these times. We propose that the onset of strong post-breakup subsidence at ~17.5 Ma was an important tectonic event that changed the pattern of sedimentation from discrete and medium-rate deposition centers in both main and south subsags to restricted but high-rate deposition in the main subsag. The cause and implications of this newly recognized event need to be investigated.展开更多

From experimental observations, the breakup occurred by three mechanisms, namely, necking, end pinching, and capillary instability. Quantitative results for the deformation and breakup of drop are presented. The maximum diameter and Sauter mean diameter of daughter drops and capillary thread radius are linearly related to the inverse shear rate and independent of the initial drop size, the dimensionless wavelength which is the wave-length divided by the thread width at breakup is independent of the shear rate and initial drop size, and the deforma-tion of threads follows a pseudo-affine deformation for Cai/Cac larger than 2.展开更多

The principal finding of the work is that viscous forces of fluids stabilize the cavitation bubble, while inertial force destabilizes the cavitation bubble. The droplet viscosity plays a dominant role on the stability of cavitation bubbles compared with that of air and bubble. Bubble–droplet radius ratio is a key factor to control the bubble stability, especially in the high radius ratio range. Internal hydrodynamic and surface tension forces are found to stabilize the cavitation bubble, while bubble stability has little relationship with the external hydrodynamic force. Inertia makes bubble breakup easily, however, the breakup time is only slightly changed when bubble growth speed reaches a certain value(50 m·s-1). In contrast, viscous force makes bubble hard to break. With the increasing initial bubble–droplet radius ratio, the bubble growth rate increases, the bubble breakup radius decreases, and the bubble breakup time becomes shorter.展开更多

The last breakup resulted in formation of the Yan-Liao aulacogen, a tectonic zone characterized by deeper material vibrancy, active faults, major igneous activity and frequent earthquakes.

文摘Understanding the dominant force responsible for supercontinent breakup is crucial for establishing Earth's geodynamic evolution that includes supercontinent cycles and plate tectonics. We therefore conclude that although circum-supercontinent subduction retreat assists supercontinent breakup, sub-supercontinent mantle upwelling is the essential force.

文摘Based on the linear analysis of stability, a dispersion equation is deduced which delineates the evolution of a general 3-dimensional disturbance on the free surface of an incompressible viscous liquid jet, With respect to the spatial growing disturbance mode, the numerical results obtained from the solution of the dispersion equation reveal that a dimensionless parameter J(e) exists. As J(e) > 1, the axisymmetric disturbance mode is most unstable; and when J(e) < 1, the asymmetric disturbances come into being, their growth rate increases with the decrease of J(e), till one of them becomes the most unstable disturbance. The breakup of a low-speed liquid jet results from the developing of axisymmetric disturbances, whose instability is produced by the surface tension; while the atomization of a high-speed Liquid jet is brought about by the evolution of nonaxisymmetric disturbance, whose instability is caused by the aerodynamic force on the interface between the jet and the ambient gas.

文摘The stratospheric polar vortex breakup (SPVB) is an important phenomenon closely related to the seasonal transition of stratospheric circulation. The high-latitude tropospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere was affected by early SPVB, causing it to enter a summer circulation pattern earlier than in late SPVB years.

文摘Supercavitation in the diesel nozzle increases the instability of droplets in part due to the two-phase mixture, while the effect of cavitation bubbles on the instability of drops is still unclear. The mathematical model and the modified bubble breakup criterion are helpful to improve the study on the breakup mechanism of the secondary diesel droplet under the condition of supercavitation.

文摘Molten slag is broken up by supersonic air into droplets through the air quenching dry slag granulation technique. The breakup process of blast furnace slag directly determines the droplet diameter and the waste heat recovery. In order to gain deep insight into the granulation mechanism and visualize the breakup process,three-dimensional unsteady numerical simulation based on the k-x based shear stress transport turbulence model was conducted to simulate the transient breakup process of molten slag(k is the turbulent kinetic energy, and x is the specific dissipation rate). The coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid method was utilized to capture the sharp air–liquid interface. The results show that a flat film is formed firstly under the effects of air impingement, recirculation zone and pressure gradients. Then, the axial wave and the spanwise wave appear simultaneously and the film is broken up into ligaments owing to the generation of vortex and hole structure at the intersection of axial trough and spanwise trough. Finally, the ligaments are broken up into droplets owing to Rayleigh–Taylor instability at the air–liquid interface. The droplets smaller than 3.00 mm account for 80%,with the average diameter of 1.95 mm.

文摘Primary breakup in a liquid-liquid pintle injector element at different radial jet velocities is investigated to elucidate the impingement morphology, the formation of primary breakup spray half cone angle, the pressure distribution, the liquid diameter distribution, and the liquid velocity distribution. With a sufficient mesh resolution, the liquid morphology can be captured in a physically sound way.A mushroom tip is triggered by a larger radial jet velocity and breakup happens at the tip edge first.Different kinds of ligament breakup patterns due to aerodynamic force and surface tension are captured on the axial sheet.A high pressure core is spotted at the impinging point region.A larger radial jet velocity can feed more disturbances into the impinging point and the axial sheet, generate stronger vortices to promote the breakup process at a longer distance, and form a larger spray half cone angle.Because of the re-collision phenomenon the axial sheet diameter does not decrease monotonically. The inner rim on the axial sheet shows a larger diameter magnitude and a lower velocity magnitude due to surface tension. This paper is expected to provide a reference for the optimum design of a liquid-liquid pintle injector.

文摘An experimental study on the breakup of a conical liquid sheet from a pressure swirl atomizer was conducted by using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. The result of this study is useful for the purpose of developing and verifying the atomization model of spray produced by a pressure swirl atomizer.

文摘The Baiyun (白云) sag in the southern Pearl River Mouth basin is the largest and deepest sag in deepwater northern South China Sea. The cause and implications of this newly recognized event need to be investigated.

文摘Geodynamic drivers for the supercontinent cycle are generally attributed to either top-down(subduction-related)or bottom-up(mantle-related)processes.Compiled geochemical data and U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic signatures for magmatic and detrital zircons from the Tarim Craton reveal a distinct change in subduction style during the Neoproterozoic. The subduction cycle is recorded in increasing and decreasing intensity of subduction-related magmatic rocks and time-equivalent sedimentary successions, and converse trends ofεHf(t)values and corresponding changes in crustal incubation time. These trends are consistent with a switch from advancing to retreating subduction. The switch likely occurred at ca.760 Ma when zirconεHf(t)values increase and crustal incubation times decrease following a transitional shift between 800 Ma and 760 Ma.A switch at this time is consistent with Rodinia breakup and may have resulted in the late Neoproterozoic Tarim rift basin. The long-lived(ca.500 Ma)subduction recorded in the Tarim Craton suggests the predominance of a top-down process for Rodinia breakup on this part of its margin.

文摘The experimental results of the deformation and breakup of a single drop immersed in a Newtonian liq-uid and subjected to a constant shear rate which generated by counter rotating Couette apparatus were presented in this paper. From experimental observations, the breakup occurred by three mechanisms, namely, necking, end pinching, and capillary instability. Quantitative results for the deformation and breakup of drop are presented. The maximum diameter and Sauter mean diameter of daughter drops and capillary thread radius are linearly related to the inverse shear rate and independent of the initial drop size, the dimensionless wavelength which is the wave-length divided by the thread width at breakup is independent of the shear rate and initial drop size, and the deforma-tion of threads follows a pseudo-affine deformation for Cai/Cac larger than 2.

文摘A modified mathematical model is used to study the effects of various forces on the stability of cavitation bubbles within a diesel droplet. With the increasing initial bubble–droplet radius ratio, the bubble growth rate increases, the bubble breakup radius decreases, and the bubble breakup time becomes shorter.

文摘The deformation of moving slug bubbles and its influence on the bubble breakup dynamics in microchannel were studied.Three bubble morphologies were found in the experiment:slug, dumbbell and grenade shapes. The viscosity effect of continuous phase aggravates the velocity difference between the fluid near the wall and the bubble, resulting in that the continuous phase near the bubble head flows towards and squeezes the bubble tail, which causes the deformation of bubbles. Moreover, the experimental results show that the deformation of bubbles could significa ntly prolo ng the bubble breakup period at the downstream Y-junction.There exists the critical capillary number Ca_(Cr )for the asymmetric breakup of grenade bubbles,Ca_(Cr )increases with the rise of flow rate and viscosity of the continuous phase.
