Blue light induced ferroptosis in retinal damage via iron overload-associated oxidative stress

The issue of light pollution has garnered increased attention recently,largely due to the widespread use of electronic devices.Blue light(BL)holds the highest energy level among visible light and has been extensively researched for its potential to cause damage to the retina.Ferroptosis,a recently identified form of programmed cell death form,has been linked to retinal diseases.However,the connection between BL-induced retinal damage and ferroptosis remains elusive.This study aims to investigate the involvement of ferroptosis in retinal damage under BL exposure and its underlying mechanism.In this study,a mouse retinal damage model and cultured ARPE-19 cells exposed to BL were employed.Various techniques including Haematoxylin-eosin staining,fundus photography,immunostaining,and transmission electron microscopywere employed to examine retinal structure and morphology changes resulting from BL exposure.To identify ferroptosis levels in vitro,we employed DCFH-DA,C11-BODIPY 581/591,and FeRhoNox^(TM)-1 probes.Additionally,real-time PCR and western blotting techniques were used to uncover potential targets in BL-induced ferroptosis.Our study showed that BL exposure can result in iron overload,oxidative stress,evidenced by increased markers TFR1,ACSL4,HO-1 and decreased expression level of SOD2,CAT and ferroptosis-associated gene of GPX4.Interestingly,we found that Deferoxamine mesylate,a compound capable of chelating excess Fe2+caused by BL,effectively mitigated lipid peroxidation,and alleviated retinal damage both in vivo and in vitro.The discoveries will advance our knowledge of BL-induced retinal damage. 展开更多

White light illumination is essential in daily life,however,the substantial amount of blue light it contains can damage human eyes.Therefore,it is important to block this high-energy blue light to protect visual health.In this study,yellow-emitting carbon dots(CDs)with a quantum yield exceeding 94%were synthesized using citric acid and urea.These CDs effectively absorb blue light.By incorporating them into polystyrene,multiple films termed CDs-based blue light blocking films(CBFs)were developed,each offering different levels of blue light absorption.These CBFs exhibited excellent transparency and efficient blue light filtering capabilities.This study highlights the potential of high quantum yield CDs,which specifically absorb blue light,as foundational materials for developing light-blocking solutions against highenergy short-wavelength light. 展开更多

Here, we demonstrate a mobile light communication system using a time-division multiplexing(TDM) scheme to achieve bidirectional data transmission via the same optical channel.Two identical blue MQW diodes are defined by software as a transmitter or a receiver. To address the light alignment issue, an image identification module integrated with a gimbal stabilizer is used to automatically detect the locations of moving targets;thus, underwater audio communication is realized via a mobile blue-light TDM communication mode. Colloidal quantum dots(CQDs)are highly regarded for their outstanding photovoltaic characteristics,including excellent color purity,stability,high photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY),narrow emission spectra,and ease of solution processing.Despite significant progress in quantum dot light-emitting diodes(QLEDs)technology since its inception in 1994,blue QLEDs still fall short in efficiency and lifespan compared to red and green versions.The toxicity concerns associated with Cd/Pb-based quantum dots(QDs)have spurred the development of heavy-metal-free alternatives,such as groupⅡ−Ⅵ(e.g.,ZnSe-based QDs),groupⅢ−Ⅴ(e.g.,InP,GaN QDs),and carbon dots(CDs).In this review,we discuss the key properties and development history of quantum dots(QDs),various synthesis approaches,the role of surface ligands,and important considerations in developing core/shell(C/S)structured QDs.Additionally,we provide an outlook on the challenges and future directions for blue QLEDs. 展开更多

Although multicrystalline Si photovoltaics have been extensively studied and applied in the collection of solar energy,the same systems suffer significant efficiency losses in indoor settings,where ambient light conditions are considerably smaller in intensity and possess greater components of non-normal incidence.Yet,indoor light-driven,stand-alone devices can offer sustainable advances in next-generation technologies such as the Internet of Things.Here,we present a non-invasive solution to aid in photovoltaic indoor light collection—radially distributed waveguide-encoded lattice(RDWEL)slim films(thickness 1.5 mm).Embedded with a monotonical radial array of cylindrical waveguides(±20°),the RDWEL demonstrates seamless light collection(FoV(fields of view)=74.5°)and imparts enhancements in JSC(short circuit current density)of 44%and 14%for indoor and outdoor lighting conditions,respectively,when coupled to a photovoltaic device and compared to an unstructured but otherwise identical slim film coating. 展开更多

Improving device efficiency is fundamental for advancing energy harvesting technology,particularly in systems designed to convert light energy into electrical output.In our previous studies,we developed a basic structure light pressure electric generator(Basic-LPEG),which utilized a layered configuration of Ag/Pb(Zr,Ti)O_(3)(PZT)/Pt/GaAs to generate electricity based on light-induced pressure on the PZT.In this study,we sought to enhance the performance of this Basic-LPEG by introducing Ag nanoparticles/graphene oxide(AgNPs/GO)composite units(NP-LPEG),creating upgraded harvesting device.Specifically,by depositing the AgNPs/GO units twice onto the Basic-LPEG,we observed an increase in output voltage and current from 241 mV and 3.1μA to 310 mV and 9.3μA,respectively,under a solar simulator.The increase in electrical output directly correlated with the intensity of the light pressure impacting the PZT,as well as matched the Raman measurements,finite-difference time-domain simulations,and COMSOL Multiphysics Simulation.Experimental data revealed that the enhancement in electrical output was proportional to the number of hot spots generated between Ag nanoparticles,where the electric field experienced substantial amplification.These results underline the effectiveness of AgNPs/GO units in boosting the light-induced electric generation capacity,thereby providing a promising pathway for high-efficiency energy harvesting devices. 展开更多

AIM:To investigate the effects of different light intensities and various mydriatic and miotic drugs on pupil accommodation in guinea pigs.METHODS:Forty-two-week-old guinea pigs were randomly divided into four groups to assess pupillary responses under varying light intensities(100,250,500 lx)and pharmacological interventions(1%atropine,1%cyclopentolate,1%tropicamide,or 2%pilocarpine).Baseline pupil size and eccentricity were recorded using a non-contact Python-based imaging system integrating edge detection and pixel-to-distance conversion.Direct illumination effects were measured at sequential time points,followed by drug administration and longitudinal tracking of pupillary changes.The protocol was repeated at 12wk of age for developmental comparisons.Postexperiment,enucleated eyes were analyzed to evaluate in vitro vs in vivo differences.RESULTS:Significant age-dependent differences in pupil dynamics were observed.Both 2-and 12-week-old guinea pigs exhibited marked pupil constriction under direct illumination(P<0.001),with decreased eccentricity post-constriction(P<0.001).Indirect illumination caused inconsistent pupil size changes(2-week:P=0.68;12-week:P=0.49).Pharmacologically,atropine,cyclopentolate,and tropicamide induced pupil dilation(P<0.001),whereas pilocarpine caused constriction(P<0.001).All drug groups showed reduced eccentricity(P<0.001).In vivo/in vitro comparisons revealed significant structural differences.CONCLUSION:This study investigates pupillary responses in developing guinea pigs,revealing a direct pupillary light reflex(PLR)with light intensity-dependent responses,while indirect PLR was undetectable.The differential effects of muscarinic modulators on pupillary responses underscore the critical role of cholinergic signaling in ocular accommodation,with age-related variations in sensitivity.Additionally,a novel non-contact measurement methodology achieved a precision of 0.01 mm for pupillary quantification,enhancing accuracy in ocular studies. 展开更多

Cellulose frameworks have emerged as promising materials for light management due to their exceptional light-scattering capabilities and sustainable nature.Conventional biomass-derived cellulose frameworks face a fundamental trade-off between haze and transparency,coupled with impractical thicknesses(≥1 mm).Inspired by squid’s skin-peeling mechanism,this work develops a peroxyformic acid(HCOOOH)-enabled precision peeling strategy to isolate intact 10-μm-thick bamboo green(BG)frameworks—100×thinner than wood-based counterparts while achieving an unprecedented optical performance(88%haze with 80%transparency).This performance surpasses delignified biomass(transparency<40%at 1 mm)and matches engineered cellulose composites,yet requires no energy-intensive nanofibrillation.The preserved native cellulose I crystalline structure(64.76%crystallinity)and wax-coated uniaxial fibril alignment(Hermans factor:0.23)contribute to high mechanical strength(903 MPa modulus)and broadband light scattering.As a light-management layer in polycrystalline silicon solar cells,the BG framework boosts photoelectric conversion efficiency by 0.41%absolute(18.74%→19.15%),outperforming synthetic anti-reflective coatings.The work establishes a scalable,waste-to-wealth route for optical-grade cellulose materials in next-generation optoelectronics. 展开更多

This study developed a novel heterogeneous Vis-Photo+Fenton-like system by integrating visible-light-responsive Co_(3)O_(4)/TiO_(2) photocatalysis with peroxymonosulfate(PMS)activation for efficient atrazine(ATZ)degradation.The synergistic process achieved complete ATZ removal within 60 min under near-neutral pH(6.9),outperform-ing individual Fenton-like(39%)and photocatalytic(24%)processes.Key factors influencing the degradation efficiency included light sources(UV>visible),pH(optimal at 6.9),catalyst dosage(0.01 g Co_(3)O_(4)/TiO_(2)),and PMS:ATZ molar ratio(1:2).The system exhibited a synergistic coefficient of 5.03(degradation)and 1.97(miner-alization),attributed to enhanced radical generation and accelerated Co^(3+)/Co^(2+)redox cycling through photoin-duced electron transfer.Intermediate analysis revealed dealkylation,dechlorination,and oxidation pathways,with reduced toxicity of by-products(e.g.,CEAT,CIAT)confirmed by ecotoxicity assessments.The mineralization efficiency(Vis-Photo+Fenton-like)reached 83.1%,significantly higher than that of standalone processes(Fenton-like:43.2%;photocatalysis:30.5%).The catalyst demonstrated excellent stability(nearly 90%recov-ery,<1μg/L Co leaching)and practical applicability.This study provides an efficient,sludge-free,and solar-compatible strategy for eliminating persistent herbicides in water treatment. 展开更多

Progressive photoreceptor cell death is one of the main pathological features of age-related macular degeneration and eventually leads to vision loss.Ferroptosis has been demonstrated to be associated with retinal degenerative diseases.However,the molecular mechanisms underlying ferroptosis and photoreceptor cell death in age-related macular degeneration remain largely unexplored.Bioinformatics and biochemical analyses in this study revealed xC^(–),solute carrier family 7 member 11-regulated ferroptosis as the predominant pathological process of photoreceptor cell degeneration in a light-induced dry age-related macular degeneration mouse model.This process involves the nuclear factor-erythroid factor 2-related factor 2-solute carrier family 7 member 11-glutathione peroxidase 4 signaling pathway,through which cystine depletion,iron ion accumulation,and enhanced lipid peroxidation ultimately lead to photoreceptor cell death and subsequent visual function impairment.We demonstrated that solute carrier family 7 member 11 overexpression blocked this process by inhibiting oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo.Conversely,solute carrier family 7 member 11 knockdown or the solute carrier family 7 member 11 inhibitor sulfasalazine and ferroptosis-inducing agent erastin aggravated H_(2)O_(2)-induced ferroptosis of 661W cells.These findings indicate solute carrier family 7 member 11 may be a potential therapeutic target for patients with retinal degenerative diseases including age-related macular degeneration. 展开更多

A Cross-Band Quantum Light Source Based on Spontaneous Four-Wave Mixing in a Shallow-Ridge Silicon Waveguide

To fully utilize the resources provided by optical fiber networks,a cross-band quantum light source generating photon pairs,where one photon in a pair is at C band and the other is at O band,is proposed in this work.This source is based on spontaneous four-wave mixing(SFWM)in a piece of shallow-ridge silicon waveguide.Theoretical analysis shows that the waveguide dispersion could be tailored by adjusting the ridge width,enabling broadband photon pair generation by SFWM across C band and O band.The spontaneous Raman scattering(SpRS)in silicon waveguides is also investigated experimentally.It shows that there are two regions in the spectrum of generated photons from SpRS,which could be used to achieve cross-band photon pair generation.A chip of shallow-ridge silicon waveguide samples with different ridge widths has been fabricated,through which cross-band photon pair generation is demonstrated experimentally.The experimental results show that the source can be achieved using dispersion-optimized shallow-ridge silicon waveguides.This cross-band quantum light source provides a way to develop new fiber-based quantum communication functions utilizing both C band and O band and extends applications of quantum networks. 展开更多

Lycopene, one of the strongest natural antioxidants known and the main carotene in ripe tomato, is very important for human health. Light is well known to be one of the most important environmental stimuli influencing lycopene biosynthesis; specifically, red light induces higher lycopene content in tomato. However, whether blue light promotes lycopene synthesis remains elusive and exactly how light stimulation promotes lycopene synthesis remains unclear. We applied supplemental blue and red lighting on tomato plants at anthesis to monitor the effect of supplemental blue and red lighting on lycopene synthesis. Our results showed that supplemental blue/red lighting induced higher lycopene content in tomato fruits; furthermore, we found that the expression of key genes in the lycopene synthesis pathway was induced by supplemented blue/red light. The expression of light signaling components, such as red-light receptor phytochromes(PHYs), blue-light receptor cryptochromes(CRYs) and light interaction factors, phytochrome-interacting factors(PIFs) and ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5(HY5) were up-or down-regulated by blue/red lighting. Thus, blue and red light increased lycopene content in tomatoes by inducing light receptors that modulate HY5 and PIFs activation to mediate phytoene synthase 1(PSY1) gene expression. These results provide a sound theoretical basis for further elucidation of the light regulating mechanism of lycopene synthesis in tomatoes, and for instituting a new generation of technological innovations for the enhancement of lycopene accumulation in crop production. 展开更多

To evaluate the supplementary blue light intensity on growth and health-promoting compounds in pak choi(Brassica campestris ssp.chinensis var.communis),four blue light intensity treatments(T0,T50,T100 and T150 indicate 0,50,100,and 150μmol m^(-2) s^(-1),respectively)were applied 10 days before harvest under greenhouse conditions.Both of cultivars(greenand red-leaf pak choi)under T50 had the highest yield,content of chlorophyll and sugars.With light intensity increasing,antioxidant compounds(vitamin C and carotenoids)significantly increased,while nitrate content showed an opposite trend.The health-promoting compounds(phenolics,flavonoids,anthocyanins,and glucosinolates)were significantly higher under supplementary light treatment than T0,so as the antioxidant capacity(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ferric-reducing antioxidant power).The species-specific differences in photosynthetic pigment and health-promoting compounds was found in green-and red-leaf pak choi.T50 treatment could be used for yield improvement,whereas T100 treatment could be applied for quality improvement.Results showed that blue light intensity can regulate the accumulation of biomass,morphology and health-promoting compounds in pak choi under greenhouse conditions. 展开更多

The quality of light is an important abiotic factor that affects the growth and development of photosynthetic organisms.In this study,we exposed the unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina to red(660 nm)and blue(450 nm)light and analyzed the cell growth,total carotenoid content,and transcriptomes.The growth of D.salina was enhanced by illumination with red light,whereas blue light was not able to promote the algal growth.In contrast,the total carotenoid content increased under both red and blue light.The RNA of D.salina was sequenced and the transcriptomic response of algal cells to red and blue light was investigated.Six transcripts encoding for the blue light receptor cryptochrome were identified,and transcripts involved in the carotenoid metabolism were up-regulated under both red and blue light.Transcripts encoding for photoprotective enzymes related to the scavenging of reactive oxygen species were up-regulated under blue light.The present transcriptomic study provides a more comprehensive understanding of carotenoid biosynthesis in D.salina under different wavelengths of light. 展开更多

In the visible spectrum, short-wave blue light with wavelength between 415 nm and 455 nm is closely related to eye light damage. This high energy blue light passes through the cornea and lens to the retina causing diseases such as dry eye, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, even stimulating the brain, inhibiting melatonin secretion, and enhancing adrenocortical hormone production, which will destroy the hormonal balance and directly affect sleep quality. Therefore, the effect of Blu-rays on ocular is becoming an important concern for the future. We describe blue light’s effects on eye tissues, summarize the research on eye injury and its physical prevention and medical treatment. 展开更多

The results showed that PAn was able to sensitize TiO2 efficiently and the composite photocatalyst could be activated by absorbing both the ultraviolet and visible light (λ: 190 ~ 800 nm), whereas pure TiO2 absorbed ultraviolet light only (λ 〈 380 nm). Under the irradiation of natural light, MB could be degraded more efficiently on the TiO2/PAn composites than on the TiO2 Furthermore, it could be easily separated from the solution by simple sedimentation. 展开更多

Using cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals, CsPb(Cl/Br)3, as a light absorber, we report a highly effective UV and blue light blocking film. The CsPb(Cl/Br)3 nanocrystals are well dispersed in the ethyl cellulose(EC) matrix to compose a UV and blue light shielding film, and the absorption edge of the film is tunable by adjusting Cl to Br ratio using anion exchange. The CsPbCl2 Br-EC film exhibits a transmittance of 5% at 459 nm, 90% at 478 nm and 95% in the range of 500–800 nm, which makes it excellent for UV and blue light shielding. In addition, the as-prepared EC-CsPb(Cl/Br)3 film shows excellent photostability under UV irradiation. Results demonstrate that this EC-CsPb(Cl/Br)3 based materials with sharp absorbance edges, tunable blocking wavelength, and high photostability can be useful for the applications in UV and blue light blocking and optical filters. 展开更多

The persistent luminescence(PersL)dependence on the dopants and derived mechanism of trapping and de-trapping processes were investigated in Y3Al2Ga3O12(YAGG)based nanophosphor,doped with Ce^3+and/or Cr^3+.It is found that the presence of Cr^3+ions produce electron and hole traps and capture suitable charge after X-ray irradiation.The effect of irradiation on the carriers trapping and their pathways after excitation was studied by means of thermo luminescence technique.On the other hand,for blue light irradiation the mechanism seems to be different.In the latter case,the Ce^3+ions,having the position of energy levels in the conduction band,become sensitizers for the electrons and main emission centres for the PersL(de-trapping process goes through Ce^3+). 展开更多

We evaluated the effects of red and blue light on the repair of UV-B radiation-induced damage in tetraspores of Chondrus ocellatus Holm. Tetraspores of C. ocellatus were treated with different UV-B radiation levels(0,36,72,108,144 and 180 J/m2),and thereafter subjected to PAR,darkness,or red or blue light during a 2-h repair stage,each day for 48 days. The diameters and cellular contents of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimmers(CPDs),chlorophyll a(Chl a),phycoerythrin,and UV-B-absorbing mycosporinelike amino acids(MAAs) contents of the tetraspores were determined. Our results show that low doses of UV-B radiation(36 and 72 J/m 2) promoted the growth of C. ocellatus; however,increased UV-B radiation gradually reduced the C. ocellatus growth(greater than 72 J/m2). The MAAs(palythine and asterina-330) in C. ocellatus were detected and analyzed by LC/MS. Our results suggest that moderate red light could induce the growth of this alga in aquaculture. In addition,photorepair was inhibited by red light,so there may be some other DNA repair mechanism activated by red light. Blue light promoted the activity of DNA photolyase,greatly improving remediation efficiency. Red and blue lights were found to reduce the capacity of C. ocellatus to form MAAs. Therefore,PAR,red light,and blue light play different roles during the repair processes for damage induced by UV-B radiation. 展开更多
