Model test studies based on the similarity theory were conducted to investigate vibration effect and damage evolution characteristics of tunnel surrounding rock under push-type cyclic blasting excavation. The model was constructed with a ratio of 1∶15.By simulating the tunnel excavation of push-type cyclic blasting, the influence of the blasting parameter change on vibration effect was explored. The damage degree of tunnel surrounding rock was evaluated by the change of the acoustic wave velocity at the same measuring point after blasting. The relationship between the damage evolution of surrounding rock and blasting times was established. The research results show that:(1)In the same geological environment, the number of delay initiation is larger, the main vibration frequency of blasting seismic wave is higher, and the attenuation of high frequency signal in the rock and soil is faster. The influence of number of delay initiation on blasting vibration effect cannot be ignored;(2)Under push-type cyclic blasting excavation, there were great differences in the decreasing rates of acoustic wave velocity of the measuring points which have the same distance to the blasting region at the same depth, and the blasting damage ranges of surrounding rock were typically anisotropic at both depth and breadth;(3)When blasting parameters were basically kept as the same, the growth trend of the cumulative acoustic wave velocity decreasing rate at the measuring point was nonlinear under different cycle blasting excavations;(4)There were nonlinear evolution characteristics between the blasting cumulative damage(D)of surrounding rock and blasting times(n)under push-type cyclic blasting loading, and different measuring points had corresponding blasting cumulative damage propagation models, respectively. The closer the measuring point was away from the explosion source, the faster the cumulative damage extension.Blasting cumulative damage effect of surrounding rock had typically nonlinear evolution properties and anisotropic characteristics. 展开更多

In the civil and mining industries, bolts are critical components of support systems, playing a vital role in ensuring their stability.Glass fibre reinforced polymer(GFRP)bolts are widely used because they are corrosion-resistant and cost-effective.However,the damage mechanisms of GFRP bolts under blasting dynamic loads are still unclear, especially compared to metal bolts. This study investigates the cumulative damage of fully grouted GFRP bolts under blasting dynamic loads. The maximum axial stress at the tails of the bolts is defined as the damage variable, based on the failure characteristics of GFRP bolts.By combining this with Miner's cumulative damage theory,a comprehensive theoretical and numerical model is established to calculate cumulative damage.Field data collected from the Jinchuan No.3 Mining Area, including GFRP bolts parameters and blasting vibration data are used for further analysis of cumulative damage in fully grouted GFRP bolts. Results indicate that with an increasing number of blasts, axial stress increases in all parts of GFRP bolts. The tail exhibits the most significant rise, with stress extending deeper into the anchorage zone.Cumulative damage follows an exponential trend with the number of blasts, although the incremental damage per blast decelerates over time.Higher dynamic load intensities accelerate damage accumulation, leading to an exponential decline in the maximum loading cycles before failure.Additionally, stronger surrounding rock and grout mitigate damage accumulation, with the effect of surrounding rock strength being more pronounced than that of grout. In contrast, the maximum axial stress of metal bolts increases quickly to a certain point and then stabilizes. This shows a clear difference between GFRP and metal bolts. This study presents a new cumulative damage theory that underpins the design of GFRP bolt support systems under blasting conditions, identifies key damage factors, and suggests mitigation measures to enhance system stability. 展开更多

To address the problems of low accuracy by the CONWEP model and poor efficiency by the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian(CEL)method in predicting close-range air blast loads of cylindrical charges,a neural network-based simulation(NNS)method with higher accuracy and better efficiency was proposed. The NNS method consisted of three main steps.First, the parameters of blast loads, including the peak pressures and impulses of cylindrical charges with different aspect ratios(L/D)at different stand-off distances and incident angles were obtained by two-dimensional numerical simulations.Subsequently, incident shape factors of cylindrical charges with arbitrary aspect ratios were predicted by a neural network. Finally, reflected shape factors were derived and implemented into the subroutine of the ABAQUS code to modify the CONWEP model, including modifications of impulse and overpressure. The reliability of the proposed NNS method was verified by related experimental results.Remarkable accuracy improvement was acquired by the proposed NNS method compared with the unmodified CONWEP model. Moreover, huge efficiency superiority was obtained by the proposed NNS method compared with the CEL method. The proposed NNS method showed good accuracy when the scaled distance was greater than 0.2 m/kg^(1/3).It should be noted that there is no need to generate a new dataset again since the blast loads satisfy the similarity law,and the proposed NNS method can be directly used to simulate the blast loads generated by different cylindrical charges. The proposed NNS method with high efficiency and accuracy can be used as an effective method to analyze the dynamic response of structures under blast loads, and it has significant application prospects in designing protective structures. 展开更多

Assessing the vulnerability of a platform is crucial in its design. In fact, the results obtained from vulnerability analyses provide valuable information, leading to precise design choices or corrective solutions that enhance the platform's chances of surviving different scenarios.Such scenarios can involve various types of threats that can affect the platform's survivability.Among such, blast waves impacting the platform's structure represent critical conditions that have not yet been studied in detail. That is,frameworks for vulnerability assessment that can deal with blast loading have not been presented yet.In this context, this work presents a fast-running engineering tool that can quantify the risk that a structure fails when it is subjected to blast loading from the detonation of high explosive-driven threats detonating at various distances from the structure itself. The tool has been implemented in an in-house software that calculates vulnerability to various impacting objects, and its capabilities have been shown through a simplified, yet realistic, case study. The novelty of this research lies in the development of an integrated computational environment capable of calculating the platform's vulnerability to blast waves, without the need for running expensive finite element simulations. In fact, the proposed tool is fully based on analytical models integrated with a probabilistic approach for vulnerability calculation. 展开更多

Accurate and efficient prediction of the distribution of surface loads on buildings subjected to explosive effects is crucial for rapidly calculating structural dynamic responses, establishing effective protective measures, and designing civil defense engineering solutions.Current state-of-the-art methods face several issues:Experimental research is difficult and costly to implement, theoretical research is limited to simple geometries and lacks precision, and direct simulations require substantial computational resources. To address these challenges, this paper presents a data-driven method for predicting blast loads on building surfaces. This approach increases both the accuracy and computational efficiency of load predictions when the geometry of the building changes while the explosive yield remains constant, significantly improving its applicability in complex scenarios. This study introduces an innovative encoder-decoder graph neural network model named BlastGraphNet,which uses a message-passing mechanism to predict the overpressure and impulse load distributions on buildings with conventional and complex geometries during explosive events. The model also facilitates related downstream applications, such as damage mode identification and rapid assessment of virtual city explosions. The calculation results indicate that the prediction error of the model for conventional building tests is less than 2%,and its inference speed is 3-4 orders of magnitude faster than that of state-of-the-art numerical methods. In extreme test cases involving buildings with complex geometries and building clusters, the method achieved high accuracy and excellent generalizability. The strong adaptability and generalizability of BlastGraphNet confirm that this novel method enables precise real-time prediction of blast loads and provides a new paradigm for damage assessment in protective engineering. 展开更多

Blast-loaded reinforced concrete(RC)slabs should fail under a ductile bending mechanism enabling high energy absorption capacity.Hence, brittle shear failure must be avoided. However, due to the uncertainties related to the materials, geometry, and resistance models,it may be difficult to predict which failure mode will prevail. This study analytically estimated the probability of premature flexural shear failure of slender RC one-way slabs subjected to blast loading considering such uncertainties and using the Monte Carlo(MC)method. The resistance models in Eurocode 2 were adopted.Specimens with and without shear reinforcement were analyzed.Bending failure was shown to be the most likely failure mode in the studied slabs. However, the probability of shear failure developing before bending failure was still relatively high, particularly for slabs without stirrups. To increase the confidence level concerning the preferred failure mechanism, the article proposes an overstrength factor to magnify the shear demand of the blast-loaded RC slab.Values of the overstrength factor for different target reliability levels were calculated. The study also found that the probability of premature shear failure increased with increasing amount of longitudinal reinforcement and decreasing slenderness.Likewise, greater impulse was found to enhance the risk for shear failure. 展开更多

Aiming at addressing the issues of unclear dynamic response mechanisms and insufficient quantification of temperature coupling effects in building structures under long-duration blast loads, this study investigates typical composite beam-slab structures through integrated blast shock tube experiments and multiscale numerical simulations using Voronoi-coupled Finite-Discrete Element Method(VoroFDEM).The research systematically reveals the dynamic response mechanisms and damage evolution patterns of composite beam-slab structures subjected to prolonged blast loading. An environmenttemperature-coupled P-I curve damage assessment system is established, and a rapid evaluation method based on image crack characteristics is proposed, achieving innovative transition from traditional mechanical indicators to intelligent recognition paradigms. Results demonstrate that composite beam-slab structures exhibit three-phase failure modes:elastic vibration, plastic hinge formation, and global collapse.Numerical simulations identify the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature threshold at-10℃,and establish a temperature-dependent piecewise function-based P-I curve prediction model, whose overpressure asymptote displays nonlinear temperature sensitivity within-50-30℃.A novel dual-mode evaluation methodology integrating Voro-FDEM numerical simulations with image-based damage feature recognition is developed, enabling quantitative mapping between crack area and destruction levels. These findings provide theoretical foundations and technical pathways for rapid blast damage assessment and protective engineering design. 展开更多

This study designs four types of liquid-filled cylindrical shell structures to investigate their protection characteristics against explosive shock waves and high-speed fragments.Bare charge and charge-driven prefabricated fragments are employed to examine the damage under blast shock waves and combined blast and fragments loading on various liquid-filled cylindrical shell structures. The test results are compared to numerical calculations and theoretical analysis for the structure's deformation, the liquid medium's movement, and the pressure waves'propagation characteristics under different liquid-filling methods. The results showed that the filling method influences the blast protection and the struc-ture's energy absorption performance. The external filling method reduces the structural deformation, and the internal filling method increases the damage effect. The gapped internal filling method improves the structure's energy absorption efficiency. The pressure wave loading on the liquid-filled cylindrical shell structure differs depending on filling methods.Explosive shock waves and high-speed fragments show a damage enhancement effect on the liquid-filled cylindrical shell structure, depending on the thickness of the internal liquid container layer. The specific impulse on the inner surface of the cylindrical shell positively correlates to the radial deformation of the cylindrical shell structure, and the external liquid layer limits the radial structural deformation. 展开更多

Investigating natural-inspired applications is a perennially appealing subject for scientists. The current increase in the speed of natural-origin structure growth may be linked to their superior mechanical properties and environmental resilience. Biological composite structures with helicoidal schemes and designs have remarkable capacities to absorb impact energy and withstand damage. However, there is a dearth of extensive study on the influence of fiber redirection and reorientation inside the matrix of a helicoid structure on its mechanical performance and reactivity. The present study aimed to explore the static and transient responses of a bio-inspired helicoid laminated composite(B-iHLC) shell under the influence of an explosive load using an isomorphic method. The structural integrity of the shell is maintained by a viscoelastic basis known as the Pasternak foundation, which encompasses two coefficients of stiffness and one coefficient of damping. The equilibrium equations governing shell dynamics are obtained by using Hamilton's principle and including the modified first-order shear theory, therefore obviating the need to employ a shear correction factor. The paper's model and approach are validated by doing numerical comparisons with respected publications. The findings of this study may be used in the construction of military and civilian infrastructure in situations when the structure is subjected to severe stresses that might potentially result in catastrophic collapse. The findings of this paper serve as the foundation for several other issues, including geometric optimization and the dynamic response of similar mechanical structures. 展开更多

Helmets exacerbate head injuries to some degree under blast load, which has been recently researched and referred to as the underwash effect.Various studies indicate that the underwash effect is attributed to either wave interaction or wave-structure interaction.Despite ongoing investigations, there is no consensus on the explanations and verification of proposed mechanisms. This study conducts experiments and numerical simulations to investigate the underwash effect, resulting from the interaction among blast load, helmets, and head models. The analysis of overpressure in experiments and simulations, with the developed simplified models that ignore unimportant geometric details, reveals that the underwash effect arises from the combined action of wave interaction and wave-structure interaction.Initially reflected in front of the head, the blast load converges at the rear after diffraction, forming a high-pressure zone.Decoupling the helmet components demonstrates that the pads alleviate rear overpressure through array hindrance of the load, resulting in a potential reduction of up to 36%in the rear overpressure peak. The helmet shell exacerbates the rear overpressure peak through geometric restriction of the load after diffraction, leading to a remarkable 388%increase in rear overpressure. The prevailing impact of the geometric restriction imposed by the shell of the helmet leads to a significant 57%increase in overpressure when employing a complete helmet. 展开更多

In order to improve the overall resilience of the urban infrastructures, it is required to conduct blast resistant design for important building structures in the city. For complex terrain in the city, it is recommended to determine the blast load on the structures via numerical simulation. Since the mesh size of the numerical model highly depends on the explosion scenario, there is no generally applicable approach for the mesh size selection. An efficient method to determine the mesh size of the numerical model of near-ground detonation based on explosion scenarios is proposed in this study. The effect of mesh size on the propagation of blast wave under different explosive weights was studied, and the correlations between the mesh size effect and the charge weight or the scaled distance was described. Based on the principle of the finite element method and Hopkinson-Cranz scaling law, a mesh size measurement unit related to the explosive weight was proposed as the criterion for determining the mesh size in the numerical simulation. Finally, the applicability of the method proposed in this paper was verified by comparing the results from numerical simulation and the explosion tests and was verified in AUTODYN. 展开更多

This work uses refined first-order shear theory to analyze the free vibration and transient responses of double-curved sandwich two-layer shells made of auxetic honeycomb core and laminated three-phase polymer/GNP/fiber surface subjected to the blast load. Each of the two layers that make up the double-curved shell structure is made up of an auxetic honeycomb core and two laminated sheets of three-phase polymer/GNP/fiber.The exterior is supported by a Kerr elastic foundation with three characteristics. The key innovation of the proposed theory is that the transverse shear stresses are zero at two free surfaces of each layer. In contrast to previous first-order shear deformation theories,no shear correction factor is required.Navier's exact solution was used to treat the double-curved shell problem with a single title boundary, while the finite element technique and an eight-node quadrilateral were used to address the other boundary requirements. To ensure the accuracy of these results,a thorough comparison technique is employed in conjunction with credible statements. The problem model's edge cases allow for this kind of analysis. The study's findings may be used in the post-construction evaluation of military and civil works structures for their ability to sustain explosive loads. In addition, this is also an important basis for the calculation and design of shell structures made of smart materials when subjected to shock waves or explosive loads. 展开更多

For the first time, the isogeometric analysis(IGA) approach is used to model and analyze free and forced vibrations of doubly-curved magneto-electro-elastic(MEE) composite shallow shell resting on the visco-Pasternak foundation in a hygro-temperature environment. The doubly-curved MEE shallow shell types include spherical shallow shell, cylindrical shallow shell, saddle shallow shell, and elliptical shallow shell subjected to blast load are investigated. The Maxwell equation and electromagnetic boundary conditions are used to determine the vary of the electric and magnetic potentials. The MEE shallow shell's equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle and refined higher-order shear theory. Then, the IGA method is used to derive the laws of natural frequencies and dynamic responses of the shell under various boundary conditions. The accuracy of the model and method is verified through reliable numerical comparisons. Aside from this, the impact of the input parameters on the free and forced vibration of the doubly-curved MEE shallow shell is examined in detail. These results may be useful in the design and manufacture of military structures such as warships, fighter aircraft, drones and missiles. 展开更多

BRBF(buckling restrained braced frame)is a relatively new lateral force resisting system for building structures.BRBFs are used mostly to resist seismic force due to their high ductility after yielding and the ability to absorb higher strain energy.ASCE(American Society of Civil Engineers)first permits the use of BRBFs as a single seismic force-resisting system by quantifying the seismic parameters such as response modification coefficient(R),over-strength factor(Ωo)and deflection amplification factor(Cd)for a structure built with BRBF,in their 2010 code(ASCE 7-10).But it has not been investigated how a structure built with BRBF,which is primarily designed to resist seismic force, and behaves under sudden occurrence of a blast load. This research investigates the performance of a BRBF subjected to blast loading. In other words, this paper focuses on the effect of blast loading on BRBF.The architype for this investigation is a chevron type braced frame. The frame is subjected to a short duration blast load that lasts only 21.7 mili-second(ms).Blast loading effects on the braced frame are assessed by identifying the weakest plane of failure, deformation characteristics and out of plane bending. The research investigates how the properties of the surrounding concrete, especially compressive strength, affect the overall strength of the BRBF on resisting blast loading. It is observed that the compressive strength of the surrounding concrete plays a significant role in reducing the deformation characteristics, both in-plane and out-of-plane. 展开更多

The principle of sonic wave measurement was introduced, and cumulative damage effects of underground engineering rock mass under blasting load were studied by in situ test, using RSM-SY5 intelligent sonic wave apparatus. The blasting test was carried out for ten times at some tunnels of Changba Lead-Zinc Mine. The damage depth of surrounding rock caused by old blasting excavation (0.8-1.2 m) was confirmed. The relation between the cumulative damage degree and blast times was obtained. The results show that the sonic velocity decreases gradually with increasing blast times, hut the damage degree (D) increases. The damage cumulative law is non-linear. The damage degree caused by blast decreases with increasing distance, and damage effects become indistinct. The blasting damage of rock mass is anisotropic. The damage degree of rock mass within charging range is maximal. And the more the charge is, the more severe the damage degree of rock mass is. The test results provide references for researches of mechanical parameters of rock mass and dynamic stability analysis of underground chambers. 展开更多

The detonation of fuel-rich explosives yields combustible products that persistently burn upon mixing with ambient oxygen, releasing additional energy through a phenomenon known as the afterburning effect. This process greatly influences the evolution of confined blast loading and the subsequent structural response, which is crucial in confined blast scenarios.Given the complex nature of the reaction process, accurate analysis of the afterburning effect remains challenging.Previous studies have either overlooked the mechanisms of detonation product combustion or failed to provide experimental validation. This study introduces a three-dimensional model to effectively characterize the combustion of detonation products. The model integrates chemical reaction source terms into the governing equations to consider the combustion processes.Numerical simulations and experimental tests were conducted to analyze the combustion and energy release from the detonation products of fuel-rich explosives in confined spaces.Approximately 50%of the energy was released during the combustion of detonation products in a confined TNT explosion.Although the combustion of these products was much slower than the detonation process,it aligned with the dynamic response of the structure, which enhanced the explosive yield.Excluding afterburning from the analysis reduced the center-point deformation of the structure by 30%.Following the inclusion of afterburning, the simulated quasistatic pressure increased by approximately 45%.Subsequent comparisons highlighted the merits of the proposed approach over conventional methods. This approach eliminates the reliance on empirical parameters, such as the amount and rate of energy release during afterburning, thereby laying the foundation for understanding load evolution in more complex environments, such as ships, buildings, and underground tunnels. 展开更多

Amid increasingly frequent military conflicts and explosion events, accurately predicting the dynamic response of reinforced concrete(RC) slabs, key load-bearing components in building structures,is essential for understanding blast-induced damage and enhancing structural protection. However, current approaches predominantly rely on experimental tests, finite element(FE) simulations, and conventional machine learning(ML) techniques, which are o ften costly, inefficie nt,narrowly applicable, and insufficiently accurate. To overcome these challenges, this study aims to optimize ML models, refine architectural designs, and improve model interpretability.A comprehensive dataset comprising 489 samples was constructed by integrating experimental and simulation data from existing literature, incorporating 15 input features and one target variable.Based on this dataset,a novel method, termed MOPSO-TXGBoost,was proposed.Building on XGBoost as a baseline, the method employs multiobjective particle swarm optimization(MOPSO) for hyperparameter tuning, introduces a tri-stream stacking architecture to enhance feature representation, and trains three distinct models to improve generalization performance.A weighted fusion strategy is employed to further enhance the accuracy of predictio n.Additio nally,a model comprehensive evaluation(MCE) index is introduced, which integrates error metrics and fitting performance to facilitate systematic model assessment.Experimental results indicate that, compared with the baseline XGBoost model, the proposed approach reduces prediction error by 61.4% and increases the coefficient of determination(R^(2)) by 0.217.Moreover,it outperforms several mainstream machine learning(ML) algorithms. The findings of this study advance ML-based blast damage prediction and provide theoretical support for safety assessment and protection optimization of RC slab structures. 展开更多
