This may result in a great underestimation of blast loads in the near field and lead to an unsafe design. However, there is still a lack of systematic quantitative analysis of the blast loads generated from cylindrical charges. In this study, a numerical model is developed by using the hydrocode AUTODYN to investigate the influences of aspect ratio and orientation on the free air blast loads generated from center-initiated cylindrical charges. This is done by examining the pressure contours, the peak overpressures and impulses for various aspect ratios ranged from 1 to 8 and arbitrary orientation monitored along every azimuth angle with an interval of 5°. To characterize the distribution patterns of blast loads, three regions, i.e., the axial region, the vertex region and the radial region are identified, and the propagation of blast waves in each region is analyzed in detail. The complexity of blast loads of cylindrical charges is found to result from the bridge wave and its interaction with primary waves. Several empirical formulas are presented based on curve-fitting the numerical data, including the orientation where the maximum peak overpressure emerges, the critical scaled distance beyond which the charge shape effect could be neglected and blast loads with varied aspect ratio in arbitrary orientation, all of which are useful for blast-resistant design.展开更多

Progressive collapse analysis is essential for an economic and safe design of building structures against progressive collapse to blast and impact loads. Because of the catastrophic nature of progressive collapse and the potentially high cost of constructing or retrofitting buildings to resist it, it is imperative that the progressive collapse analysis methods be reliable. For engineers, their methodology to carry out progressive collapse evaluation need not only be accurate and concise, but also be easily used and works fast. Thus, many researchers have been spending lots of effort in developing reliable, efficient and straightforward progressive collapse analysis methods recently. In the present paper, current progressive collapse analysis methods available in the literature are reviewed. Their suitability, applicability and reliability are discussed. Our recent proposed new method for progressive collapse analysis of reinforced concrete frames under blast loads is also introduced.展开更多

Protecting URM wall from IED attack is very complicated. An effective solution to mitigate blast effects on URM wall is to retrofit URM wails with metallic foam sheets to absorb blast energy. However, mitigation of blast effects on metallic foam protected URM walls is currently in their infancy in the world. In this paper, numerical models are used to simulate the per- formance of aluminum foam protected URM walls subjected to blast loads. A distinctive model, in which mortar and brick units of masonry are discritized individually, is used to model the perform- ance of masonry and the contact between the masonry and steel face-sheet of aluminum foam is modelled using the interface element model. The aluminum foam is modelled by a nonlinear elas- toplastic material model. The material models for masonry, aluminum foam and interface are then coded into a finite element program LS-DYNA3D to perform the numerical calculations of response and damage of aluminum foam protected URM walls under airblast loads. Discussion is made on the effectiveness of the aluminum foam protected system for URM wall against blast loads.展开更多

文摘Unbonded post-tensioned(PT)concrete systems are widely used in safety-critical structures, yet model-ing practices for prestress implementation and tendon-concrete interaction remain inconsistent. This study investigates the effects of sheath(duct)implementation and confinement assumptions through nonlinear finite element analysis.Four modeling cases were defined, consisting of an explicit sheath without tendon-concrete confinement(S)and three no-sheath variants with different confinement levels(X,N,A).One-way beams and two-way panels were analyzed, and panel blast responses were validated against experimental results. In both beams and panels, average initial stress levels were similar across models, through local stress concentrations appeared when the sheath was modeled.Under blast loading, these local effects became critical, and the sheath-implemented model reproduced experimental behavior most accurately, whereas non-implemented models deviated.Reduced blast intensity diminished the differences among models, thereby reaffirming that sheath-induced localization and damage propagation are critical factors. These findings highlight the importance of explicit sheath implementation for realistic numerical assessment of unbonded PT structures under extreme loads.

文摘In the civil and mining industries, bolts are critical components of support systems, playing a vital role in ensuring their stability.Glass fibre reinforced polymer(GFRP)bolts are widely used because they are corrosion-resistant and cost-effective.However,the damage mechanisms of GFRP bolts under blasting dynamic loads are still unclear, especially compared to metal bolts. This study investigates the cumulative damage of fully grouted GFRP bolts under blasting dynamic loads. The maximum axial stress at the tails of the bolts is defined as the damage variable, based on the failure characteristics of GFRP bolts.By combining this with Miner's cumulative damage theory,a comprehensive theoretical and numerical model is established to calculate cumulative damage.Field data collected from the Jinchuan No.3 Mining Area, including GFRP bolts parameters and blasting vibration data are used for further analysis of cumulative damage in fully grouted GFRP bolts. Results indicate that with an increasing number of blasts, axial stress increases in all parts of GFRP bolts. The tail exhibits the most significant rise, with stress extending deeper into the anchorage zone.Cumulative damage follows an exponential trend with the number of blasts, although the incremental damage per blast decelerates over time.Higher dynamic load intensities accelerate damage accumulation, leading to an exponential decline in the maximum loading cycles before failure.Additionally, stronger surrounding rock and grout mitigate damage accumulation, with the effect of surrounding rock strength being more pronounced than that of grout. In contrast, the maximum axial stress of metal bolts increases quickly to a certain point and then stabilizes. This shows a clear difference between GFRP and metal bolts. This study presents a new cumulative damage theory that underpins the design of GFRP bolt support systems under blasting conditions, identifies key damage factors, and suggests mitigation measures to enhance system stability.

文摘Progressive collapse of building structures under blast and impact loads has attracted great attention all over the world. Our recent proposed new method for progressive collapse analysis of reinforced concrete frames under blast loads is also introduced.

文摘It is possible for certain building structures to encounter both the seismic load and blast load during their service life. With the development of the economy and the increase of security demand, the need for design of building structures against multi-hazard is becoming more and more obvious. Therefore, the damage analysis of building structures under the combined action of multiple hazards has become a very urgent requirement for disaster prevention and reduction. In this paper, the refined finite element model of reinforced concrete(RC)columns is established by using the explicit dynamic analysis software LS-DYNA.Combined with the Monte Carlo method, the damage law of RC columns under the combined action of random single earthquake or explosion disaster and multi-hazard is studied, and the damage groups are distinguished according to the damage index.Based on the support vector machine(SVM)algorithm, the dividing line between different damage degree groups is determined, and a rapid method for determining the damage degree of RC columns under the combined seismic and blast loads is proposed. Finally, suggestions for the design of RC column against multi-disaster are put forward.

文摘A multi-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics and peridynamics(SPH-PD)coupling model is proposed in this study for simulating the fracture characteristics of ice plates exposed to underwater blast loads. The SPH model employs a volume adaptive scheme(VAS)and a multi-resolution particle technique to accurately simulate explosive charge detonation and shock wave propagation. This approach addresses numerical challenges from charge expansion and significant size disparity between the charge and the fluid particles. The model captures the full underwater explosion process, covering both the shock wave phase and the bubble expansion stage,by applying appropriate equations of state for each respective phase. To analyze ice plate damage and crack propagation influenced by temperature changes,an ordinary state-based PD(OSB-PD)formulation with coupled mechanical and thermodynamic models is used.Numerical results show that the proposed coupling method demonstrates good agreement with reference solutions and experimental data.
文摘Amid increasingly frequent military conflicts and explosion events, accurately predicting the dynamic response of reinforced concrete(RC) slabs, key load-bearing components in building structures,is essential for understanding blast-induced damage and enhancing structural protection. However, current approaches predominantly rely on experimental tests, finite element(FE) simulations, and conventional machine learning(ML) techniques, which are o ften costly, inefficie nt,narrowly applicable, and insufficiently accurate. To overcome these challenges, this study aims to optimize ML models, refine architectural designs, and improve model interpretability.A comprehensive dataset comprising 489 samples was constructed by integrating experimental and simulation data from existing literature, incorporating 15 input features and one target variable.Based on this dataset,a novel method, termed MOPSO-TXGBoost,was proposed.Building on XGBoost as a baseline, the method employs multiobjective particle swarm optimization(MOPSO) for hyperparameter tuning, introduces a tri-stream stacking architecture to enhance feature representation, and trains three distinct models to improve generalization performance.A weighted fusion strategy is employed to further enhance the accuracy of predictio n.Additio nally,a model comprehensive evaluation(MCE) index is introduced, which integrates error metrics and fitting performance to facilitate systematic model assessment.Experimental results indicate that, compared with the baseline XGBoost model, the proposed approach reduces prediction error by 61.4% and increases the coefficient of determination(R^(2)) by 0.217.Moreover,it outperforms several mainstream machine learning(ML) algorithms. The findings of this study advance ML-based blast damage prediction and provide theoretical support for safety assessment and protection optimization of RC slab structures.
文摘Assessing the vulnerability of a platform is crucial in its design. In fact, the results obtained from vulnerability analyses provide valuable information, leading to precise design choices or corrective solutions that enhance the platform's chances of surviving different scenarios.Such scenarios can involve various types of threats that can affect the platform's survivability.Among such, blast waves impacting the platform's structure represent critical conditions that have not yet been studied in detail. That is,frameworks for vulnerability assessment that can deal with blast loading have not been presented yet.In this context, this work presents a fast-running engineering tool that can quantify the risk that a structure fails when it is subjected to blast loading from the detonation of high explosive-driven threats detonating at various distances from the structure itself. The tool has been implemented in an in-house software that calculates vulnerability to various impacting objects, and its capabilities have been shown through a simplified, yet realistic, case study. The novelty of this research lies in the development of an integrated computational environment capable of calculating the platform's vulnerability to blast waves, without the need for running expensive finite element simulations. In fact, the proposed tool is fully based on analytical models integrated with a probabilistic approach for vulnerability calculation.

文摘This study designs four types of liquid-filled cylindrical shell structures to investigate their protection characteristics against explosive shock waves and high-speed fragments.Bare charge and charge-driven prefabricated fragments are employed to examine the damage under blast shock waves and combined blast and fragments loading on various liquid-filled cylindrical shell structures. The test results are compared to numerical calculations and theoretical analysis for the structure's deformation, the liquid medium's movement, and the pressure waves'propagation characteristics under different liquid-filling methods. The results showed that the filling method influences the blast protection and the struc-ture's energy absorption performance. The external filling method reduces the structural deformation, and the internal filling method increases the damage effect. The gapped internal filling method improves the structure's energy absorption efficiency. The pressure wave loading on the liquid-filled cylindrical shell structure differs depending on filling methods.Explosive shock waves and high-speed fragments show a damage enhancement effect on the liquid-filled cylindrical shell structure, depending on the thickness of the internal liquid container layer. The specific impulse on the inner surface of the cylindrical shell positively correlates to the radial deformation of the cylindrical shell structure, and the external liquid layer limits the radial structural deformation.
文摘The protective bulkhead of the large surface warship need to be designed working in the membrane mode. In this paper, a formula is derived for calculating the plastic deformation of the protective bulkhead subjected to blast loading by the energy method, and the ultimate capability of the protective bulkhead can be calculated. The design demand of the protective bulkhead is discussed. The calculation is compared with external experiments, which indicates that the formula is of great application value.
文摘This paper presents a time-efficient numerical approach to modelling high explosive(HE)blastwave propagation using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD).One of the main issues of using conventional CFD modelling in high explosive simulations is the ability to accurately define the initial blastwave properties that arise from the ignition and consequent explosion.Specialised codes often employ Jones-Wilkins-Lee(JWL)or similar equation of state(EOS)to simulate blasts. However, most available CFD codes are limited in terms of EOS modelling. They are restrictive to the Ideal Gas Law(IGL)for compressible flows, which is generally unsuitable for blast simulations. To this end, this paper presents a numerical approach to simulate blastwave propagation for any generic CFD code using the IGL EOS.A new method known as the Input Cavity Method(ICM)is defined where input conditions of the high explosives are given in the form of pressure, velocity and temperature time-history curves. These time history curves are input at a certain distance from the centre of the charge. It is shown that the ICM numerical method can accurately predict over-pressure and impulse time history at measured locations for the incident, reflective and complex multiple reflection scenarios with high numerical accuracy compared to experimental measurements. The ICM is compared to the Pressure Bubble Method(PBM),a common approach to replicating initial conditions for a high explosive in Finite Volume modelling. It is shown that the ICM outperforms the PBM on multiple fronts, such as peak values and overall overpressure curve shape. Finally, the paper also presents the importance of choosing an appropriate solver between the Pressure Based Solver(PBS)and Density-Based Solver(DBS)and provides the advantages and disadvantages of either choice. In general,it is shown that the PBS can resolve and capture the interactions of blastwaves to a higher degree of resolution than the DBS.This is achieved at a much higher computational cost, showing that the DBS is much preferred for quick turnarounds.
文摘Terrorist attacks using improvised explosive devices (IED) can result in unreinforced masonry (URM) wall collapse. Discussion is made on the effectiveness of the aluminum foam protected system for URM wall against blast loads.
