Leptospirillum ferriphilum cultured using different energy sources(either soluble ferrous ion or pyrite) changed the surface properties of pyrite.Cell adsorption,zeta-potential,hydrophobicty,FT-IR spectra and surface morphology were investigated.Adhesion of bacterial cells to the pyrite surface is a fast process.Furthermore, the adsorption of cells grown in pyrite is greater than of cells grown in soluble ferrous ion.The Iso-Electric Point(IEP) of pyrite treated with L.ferriphilum approaches that of the cells themselves. The contact angle of the pyrite surface was observed to decrease due to the surface formation of some hydrophilic substances during bio-leaching.Changes in pyrite surface properties after bacterial treatment support the idea that ferric ion plays an important role and that indirect bio-oxidation is the principal mechanism of pyrite bio-leaching. 展开更多

The substantial arsenic(As)content present in arsenic-containing bio-leaching residue(ABR)presents noteworthy environ-mental challenges attributable to its inherent instability and susceptibility to leaching.Given its elevated calcium sulfate content,ABR exhibits considerable promise for industrial applications. This study delved into the feasibility of utilizing ABR as a source of sulfates for producing super sulfated cement(SSC),offering an innovative binder for cemented paste backfill(CPB).Thermal treatment at varying temperatures of 150,350,600,and 800℃ was employed to modify ABR’s performance. The investigation encompassed the examination of phase transformations and alterations in the chemical composition of As within ABR.Subsequently, the hydration characteristics of SSC utilizing ABR,with or without thermal treatment, were studied, encompassing reaction kinetics, setting time, strength development, and microstructure. The findings revealed that thermal treatment changed the calcium sulfate structure in ABR,consequently impacting the resultant sample performance.Notably, calcination at 600℃ demonstrated optimal modification effects on both early and long-term strength attributes. This enhanced performance can be attributed to the augmented formation of reaction products and a densified micro-structure.Furthermore,the thermal treatment elicited modifications in the chemical As fractions within ABR,with limited impact on the As immobilization capacity of the prepared binders. 展开更多

The precipitation of jarosite adversely affects the bio-leaching of copper sulfides in the Sarcheshmeh heap bio-leaching process. The variables of the initial concentration of ferrous iron in the growth medium, pH, and temperature were examined in the laboratory to determine how they affect the precipitation of jarosite in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria. It was found that the maximum ferric precipitate occurred at a ferrous sulfate concentration of 50 g/L, a temperature of 32 ℃, and an initial pH value of 2.2. The effects of the precipitation of ferric iron on the quantities of ions that are important for A. ferrooxidans bacteria in aqueous phase, i.e., ferric, sulfate, potassium, phosphate, and magnesium ions, also were assessed. The results showed relatively similar patterns for the ferric and potassium ions, and then reason might have been the co-precipitation of these ions as constituent elements of jarosite mineral. At pH values greater than 1.6, the solubility of phosphate ions decreased dramatically due to the co-precipitation of phosphate ions with the jarosite precipitate and due to the significant growth rate of A. ferrooxidans bacteria in this pH range. Due to the dissolution of a gangue constituent in the ore, the magnesium levels increased in the first few days of the bio-leaching process;thereafter, it decreased slightly. 展开更多

By using thiobacillus ferrooxidans (T.f) from Qixiashan, Hubei Province, China, the adsorption characteristics of T.f on surface of sulfide mineral were studied. The influences of adsorption time, pH value, temperature, initial inoculated concentration of bacteria, concentration of sulfide mineral powder, and variety of minerals on the adsorption characteristics were firstly investigated by using the ninhydrin colorimetric method, and the changes of contact angles and Zeta potentials of mineral surface during the bacterial adsorption were then determined. The results show that when the leaching experiments are performed for a long time from several days to a month, the maximal quantity of adsorption of T.f on the surface of pyrite is obtained under the following conditions: leaching for 20 d, pH value in range of 12 and temperature at 30 ℃, respectively; when the bio-leaching experiments are performed for a shorter leaching time, the maximal quantity of adsorption is obtained under the conditions: bio-leaching for 2 h, at 2.4×107 cell/mLof initial inoculated bacteria concentration, and at 10% of mineral powder concentration; and the adsorption quantities are different form one sulfide mineral to another, and the adsorption of T.f on the surface of sulfide minerals includes three phases: increasing phase, stationary phase and decreasing phase. 展开更多
