In this paper, new light curve fitting and orbital period change analysis of two contact binaries NSVS 9023048 and NSVS 2461789 are presented. We found that both of them are totally eclipsing contact binaries. Our photometric solutions suggest that NSVS 9023048 is a deep contact binary(q=10.14,f=69.2%),however,NSVS 2461789is a shallow one(f=24.4%,q=3.08).The asymmetric light curves of NSVS 2461789 and NSVS 9023048 can be explained by the star-spot activity. At the same time, using the available eclipse times,we first studied the orbital period changes of these two targets. It is discovered that the period of NSVS 9023048 is decreasing at a rate of dP/dt=-1.17×10^(-6)day yr^(-1),which can be explained by mass transfer from the more massive star to the less massive one or angular momentum loss.In addition, the O-C diagrams of NSVS 9023048 and NSVS 2461789show possible cyclic oscillations with a period of 7.29 yr and 9.91 yr,respectively. The cyclic oscillations may be caused by the light-travel time effect due to the presence of a third component. The mass of the tertiary companion is determined to be M_(3)sin(i_(3))=9.05 Mefor NSVS 9023048 and M_(3)sin(i_(3))=0.11 Mefor NSVS 2461789.Based on our calculations, the third body of NSVS 9023048 may be a black hole candidate. Our study also reveals that NSVS 9023048 is stable now. 展开更多

In this study, the apsidal motion analyses of the eclipsing binary systems V398 Lac,V2544 Cyg,and V785 Cas are presented.The(O-C)diagrams of the selected systems were constructed using all available and reliable times of minimum light compiled from the literature. As a result, the apsidal motion periods were determined to be 353±50 yr,43.3±5.1 yr and 83.4±8.5 yr,respectively.Furthermore, the TESS light curves of the three systems were analyzed to derive their photometric and absolute parameters. The component masses were determined as follows:for V398 Lac,M_(1)=3.83±0.35 M_(⊙)and M2=3.27±0.35 M_(⊙);for V2544 Cyg,M_(1)=1.75±0.38 M_(⊙)and M2=1.40±0.38 M_(⊙);for V785 Cas,M_(1)=5.64±0.41 M_(⊙)and M2=5.18±0.41 M_(⊙).The parameters related to apsidal motion,as well as the observational and theoretical internal structure constants(K_(2,obs) and K_(2,teo))were calculated for studied binaries. The relativistic contribution to the observed apsidal motion rate was found to be relatively small, constituting less than approximately 5%of the total rate in each system. The theoretical internal structure constants were derived from the evolutionary models, assuming a standard chemical composition of(X,Z)=(0.70,0.01). 展开更多

We present the results of our study of the long-period eclipsing binary star V454 Aur.The results are based on spectroscopic data obtained with the UFESéchelle spectrograph and photometric observations from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite(TESS).The derived radial velocity curve is based on 17 spectra obtained between 2021and 2023,covering all orbital phases of this binary system. The orbital period determined from TESS data,P=27.019803±0.000003 days, agrees within uncertainties with the period established in previous studies. The model constructed for the TESS photometric light curve achieves a precision of 0.01%.The effective temperatures of both components,as well as the system metallicity, were directly derived from the spectra and are Teff,A=6250±50 K,Teff,B=5855±50 K,and[Fe/H]=-0.10±0.08,respectively.Our analysis of the photometric and spectroscopic data allowed us to directly compute the luminosities of the components,LA=1.82 L☉and LB=1.07 L☉,their radii,RA=1.15 R☉and RB=1.00 R☉,and their masses,MA=1.137 M☉and MB=1.023 M☉,with uncertainties below 1%.Comparison with evolutionary tracks indicates that the system’s age is 1.18±0.10 Gyr,and both components are still on the main sequence. The V454 Aur system is particularly interesting due to the partial eclipse of the primary component, which results in the“inversion”of the primary and secondary minima in the photometric light curve. 展开更多

In this paper, new light curves(LCs) of contact eclipsing binary(CEB) systems LX Lyn and V0853 Aur are presented and analyzed by using the 2015 version of the Wilson-Devinney(W-D) code.In order to explain their asymmetric LCs,cool starspots on the components were employed. It is suggested that their fill-out degrees are f=12.0%(LX Lyn) and f=26.3%(V0853 Aur).At the same time,we found that LX Lyn is a W-type eclipsing binary(EB) with an orbital inclination of i=84°.88 and a mass ratio of q=2.31.V0853 Aur is also a W-type CEB with a mass ratio of q=2.77 and an orbital inclination of i= 79°.26.Based on all available times of light minimum, their orbital period changes are studied by using the O-C method. The O-C diagram of LX Lyn reveals a cyclic oscillation with a period of about 14.84 yr and an amplitude of 0.0019 days, which can be explained by the light-travel time effect(LTTE) due to the presence of a third body with a minimum mass of0.06M_⊙.For V0853 Aur,it is discovered that the O-C diagram of the system also shows a cyclic oscillation with a period of 9.64 yr and an amplitude of 0.03365 days. The cyclic oscillation of V0853 Aur can be attributed to the LTTE by means of a third body with a mass no less than 3.77M_⊙.The third body may play an important role in the formation and evolution of these systems. 展开更多

We present photometric observations in Sloan filters g′, i′of the eclipsing W UMa stars USNOA2.0 1350-17365531, V471 Cas, V479 Lac and V560 Lac. The sinusoidal-like O-C diagram of V471 Cas indicates the presence of a third body with mass 0.12 M_⊙(a red dwarf) at distance 897 R_⊙. The O-C diagram of V479 Lac reveals a period decrease of d P/dt =-1.69 × 10-6d yr-1. The results of the light curve solutions are:(i) the targets are overcontact binaries with small fill-out factors;(ii) their components are F–K stars, comparable in size, whose temperature differences are below 80 K;(iii) all targets undergo partial eclipses and to limit the possible mass ratios we carried out two-step q-search analysis. The target global parameters(luminosities, radii, masses) were obtained on the basis of their Gaia distances and the results of our light curve solutions. The obtained total mass of V560 Lac turns out to be smaller than the lower mass limit for presently known W UMa binaries of 1.0-1.2 M_⊙, i.e. this target is a peculiar overcontact system. 展开更多

New light curves and photometric solutions of FP Lyn,FV CVn and V354 UMa are presented. We found that these three systems are W-subtype shallow contact binaries. In addition,it is obvious that the light curves of FP Lyn and V354 UMa are asymmetric. Therefore,a hot spot was added on the primary star of FP Lyn and a dark spot was added on the secondary star of V354 UMa.At the same time,we added a third light to the photometric solution of FP Lyn for the final result. The obtained mass ratios and fill-out factors are q = 1.153 and f = 13.4% for FP Lyn,q = 1.075 and f = 4.6% for FV CVn,and q = 3.623 and f = 10.7% for V354 UMa respectively. The investigations of orbital period for these three systems indicate that the periods are variable.FP Lyn and V354 UMa were discovered to have secularly increasing components with rates of dp/dt = 4.19 ×10^-7 dyr^-1 and dp/dt = 7.70 ×10^-7 dyr^-1 respectively, which are feasibly caused by conservative mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive component. In addition, some variable components were discovered for FV CVn,including a rate of dp/dt =-1.13 ×10^-6 dyr^-1 accompanied by a cyclic oscillation with amplitude and period of 0.0069 d and 10.65 yr respectively. The most likely explanation for the long-term decrease is angular momentum loss. The existence of an additional star is the most plausible explanation for the periodic variation. 展开更多

In this study,we determined the physical parameters of W UMa type contact binaries and their stability of mass transfer with different stellar mass ranges over a broad space by applying the basic dynamical evolution equations of the W UMa type contact binaries using accretor and donor masses between 0.079 and 2.79 M_(⊙).In these systems,we have studied the three subclasses of W UMa systems of A-,B-and W-type contact binaries using the initial and final mass ranges and we investigated different stellar and orbital parameters for the subclasses of W UMa systems. We examined the stability of the W UMa type contact binaries using the orbital parameters such as critical mass ratio,Roche lobe radius of the donor star and mass ratio of these systems. Thus,we computed the observed and calculated physical parameters of A-,B-and W-type W UMa systems. Moreover,we determined the combined and color temperatures to classify the three subclasses of the systems. Also,we presented the result of the internal stellar structure and evolution of W UMa type contact binaries by using the polytropic model. 展开更多

We performed new photometric observations for two contact binaries(i.e., CRTS J025408.1+265957 and CRTS J012111.1+272933), which were observed by the 1.0 m telescope at Xingjiang Astronomical Observatory. From our light curves and several survey data, we derived several sets of photometric solutions. We found that CRTS J025408.1+265957 and CRTS J012111.1+272933 were A-and W-type W UMa, respectively. The results imply that the spot migrates or disappears in the two contact binaries, which were identified by chromospheric activity emissions(e.g., Hαemission) from LAMOST spectra. From the O-C curves, the orbital periods of the two contact binaries may be increasing, which is interpreted by the mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one. With mass transferring, the two contact binaries may evolve from the contact configurations to semi-detached ones as predicted by the theory of thermal relaxation oscillation. 展开更多

Using the apparent correlation of luminosity(L;) versus displacement(R) of high mass X-ray binaries(HMXBs),we aim to constrain the common envelope(CE) mechanism, which is vital in the formation and evolution of compact binaries. We find that under the assumption of the γ-algorithm, the apparent correlation can also be reconstructed generally within a reasonable range of key parameters adopted, though the population of HMXBs is distinct with that in the canonical αCE-formalism. We compare the spatial distribution of HMXBs under the two CE mechanisms, and suggest the difference in L;versus R distribution may provide an additional clue for the study of the CE phase and to discriminate between CE models. 展开更多

HH UMa and V1175 Her are two W UMa contact binary systems whose periods were reported as undergoing secular increase. In this paper,we improved their period analyses with a more extensive database of eclipse timings, finding that both periods show cyclic variation. The cyclic variation could be attributed to a Light Travel Time Effect induced by a third body. Both circular orbit and eccentric orbit cases were considered. For HH UMa,the cyclic variation with a period of around 20 yr has been detected, which may be caused by a third body with the mass larger than 0.23 M_(⊙).However,no parabolic variation was detected in its O−C curve, implying the balance of the mass transfer between the two components and the angular momentum loss from the binary system. As to V1175 Her,a long-term period increase superposed on a periodic oscillation was detected. The period increase with a rate of about dP/dt=2×10^(-7)day yr^(−1)indicates the mass transfer from the less massive component to its companion. The cyclic variation of about 7.5 yr could be caused by a hierarchical third body with a minimal mass exceeding 0.46M_(⊙)orbiting around the central binary. This mass is larger than that of the less massive component of the binary, which means that the secondary component was not replaced by the third body during early stellar interactions, implying that it keeps original dynamical information.By removing angular momentum from the central binary system, the tertiary component has played a significant role in the formation of contact binaries. 展开更多

We present the first BVR photometry, period variation and photometric light curve analysis of two poorly studied eclipsing binaries,V1321 Cyg and CR Tau.Observations were carried out from November 2017 to January 2020 at the observatory of Uzhhorod National University.Period variations were studied using all available early published as well as our minima times. We used the newly developed ELIS a code for the light curve analysis and determination of photometric parameters for both systems. We found that V1321 Cyg is a close detached eclipsing system with a low photometric mass ratio of q=0.28 which suggests that the binary is a post-mass transfer system. No significant period changes in this system are detected.CR Tau is,on the other hand,a semi-detached system where the secondary component almost fills its Roche lobe.We detected a long-term period increase at a rate of 1.49 × 10^(-7) d yr^(-1),which supports mass transfer from the lower mass secondary component to the more massive primary. 展开更多

The study of W UMa binary systems gives a wealth of information about their nature as well as their parent bodies (if any), like clusters. In this paper, we present the I passband photometric solutions of four W UMa binaries in the open cluster Berkeley 39 using the latest version of the W-D program. The result shows that two binary systems are W-subtype W UMa binary systems and the other two systems are H-subtype W UMa binary systems. No third body has been found in any of the four systems. We found a correlation between the period and mass-ratio as well as temperature and mass-ratio for the respective variables, which is similar to the relationship between mass ratio and total mass of the contact binaries as shown by van't Veer and Li et al. 展开更多

We performed a detailed photometric analysis of eight ultra-short period eclipsing binaries(USPEBs) using the Wilson-Devinney method. We present the modeled light curves and derived photometric solutions. The USPEBs with period(P)≤0.21 d considered in our study belong to W-subtype having shallow contact factor(f)<~20%, high mass ratio(q)>~0.7 and later spectral types. The absolute parameters for these short-period binaries were derived applying empirical relations. We discuss the evolutionary stage of these USPEBs using the mass-radius, color-density and period-color diagrams. The objects showed poor metallicities, and some objects were even found to be existing around fully convective limits. The period distribution of USPEBs exhibited a sharp cut-off at 0.22 d;however, we observed significant deficits for our objects in the literature. We examined the statistics of USPEBs studied to date(in terms of the distribution of period, mass ratio and component temperatures of USPEBs) and observed that a dominant distribution of component temperatures for these USPEBs was towards lower temperatures. 展开更多

Two eclipsing binary systems,UZ Lyr and BR Cyg,are semi-detached types whose secondary component fills its Roche lobe.Although radial velocity and light curves of these systems have already been investigated separately, both their radial velocity and light curves are analyzed simultaneously for the first time in the present study. Also, the orbital period changes of these systems are studied. Our results show that the mass transfers between components have negligible effects on the orbital period changes of these systems, but two light travel time effects are the reasons for the periodic behavior of the O-C curve for UZ Lyr.We could not remark more information about orbital period changes for BR Cyg,but we find a new orbital period for it.By radial velocity and light curve analysis,we find a cold spot on the secondary component of BR Cyg.The new geometrical and physical parameters of both systems are obtained and their positions on the H-R diagram are demonstrated. 展开更多

We present new photometry for two contact binaries,Y Sex and V1363 Ori,which were observed by three small telescopes in China.By using the W-D method, the absolute parameters are updated from new BVR light curves and previous radial velocity curves. Results identify that two binaries are deep, lowmass ratio(DLMR)overcontact binaries with q≤0.25 and f≥50%.From the temperature-luminosity diagram, the primary components are slightly evolved main-sequence stars, whose evolutionary ages are~2.51 Gyr for Y Sex and~3.56 Gyr for V 1363 Ori,respectively. From the(O-C)curves,it is found that the orbital periods may be undergoing secular increase with cyclic variations, which may be interpreted either by magnetic activity cycles or by the light-time orbit effect. With period increasing, this kind of DLMR overcontact binaries, such as Y Sex and V1363 Ori,will evolve into the rapid-rotating single stars. 展开更多

We presented the first photometric and orbital period investigations for two near-contact binaries:HT Lyn and IR Lyn.The light-curves solutions derived from both our ground-based and various surveys’observations suggested that HT Lyn and IR Lyn are two semi-detached-type near-contact binaries with the secondary and primary components filling the Roche lobe.Combining the eclipse timings derived from several surveys’data and our observations with those reported in the literature,we modified the orbital periods and revealed that their orbital periods were stable for the last two decades. The absolute physical parameters were well determined by using the empirical relations and the Gaia-distance-based method.Similar to other near-contact binaries, the primary components of HT Lyn and IR Lyn are evolving at the main-sequence stage, while their less-massive secondary components show the over-sized and over-luminosity features and should be more evolved than their primary ones.Combining the stable orbital period with the semi-detached configurations,we infer that the two near-contact binaries may be just located in the critical phase and evolving from the current semi-detached phase to the detached or contact one. 展开更多

We investigate orbital period changes of two deep, low mass ratio(DLMR) overcontact W UMa-type binaries, FG Hya and GR Vir. It is found that the orbital period of FG Hya shows a cyclic change with a period of Pmod= 54.44 yr. The cyclic oscillation may be due to a third body in an eccentric orbit, while the orbital period of GR Vir shows a periodic variation with a period of Pmod= 28.56 yr and an amplitude of A = 0.0352 d. The periodic variation of GR Vir can be interpreted as a result of either the light-time effect of an unseen third body or the magnetic activity cycle. 展开更多

Masses of W Ursae Majoris-type(W UMa) binaries play a critical role in investigating stellar dynamical evolutionary status. In this paper, we combine the PARSEC(PAdova and TRieste Stellar Evolution Code) with the Roche geometric model to provide a method to determine the masses of W UMa systems. To verify the validity of this method, we compile a sample of 140 spectrum binaries from the literature, which includes 76 W-and 64 A-subtype systems with reliable physical parameters. We find that the average fractional difference and the standard deviation(σM) of the residuals for W-subtype and Asubtype approximately amount to 15.66% and 0.1218, 16.03% and 0.2094, respectively. Meanwhile, we also perform detailed analyses in accordance with the orbital period, the effective temperatures and the mass ratio. We find that the method is more applicable to determine masses for W UMa systems with low effective temperature and short period. 展开更多

We presented a low-precision spectrum for HI Leo,Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite data for V523 Cas,and new photometry for both K-type contact binaries.Comparing their light curves on different observing dates,we found small intrinsic variabilities, such as variable amplitudes for HI Leo and the varying heights around the second maxima for V523 Cas.By the Wilson-Devinney Code,we deduced six photometric solutions. The dark spot of V523 Cas may appear on the surface of the more massive component on BJD 2458768,while it disappears on BJD 2458779.Our results indicate that the two binaries are W-type shallow-contact binaries(f≤10%).From the eclipse timing residuals,we found that the orbital periods may continuously increase, accompanied by one to two light-time effects due to additional bodies. The modulated periods and semi-amplitudes are P_(3)=25.8(±1.0)yr and A_(3)=0_·^(d)0066(6)for HI Leo,P_(3)=-14.8(±2.0)yr and A_(3)=0_·^(d)0448(12),P_(4)=18.89(±0.14)yr and A4=0_·^(d)0025(2)for V523 Cas,respectively. The orbital period secularly increases at a rate of dP/dt=2.86(±0.11)×10^(-7)day yr^(-1)for HI Leo and dP/dt=3.45(±0.07)×10^(-8)day yr^(-1)for V523 Cas,which may be attributed to mass transfer from the secondary to the primary. With mass transferring, the shallow-contact binaries,HI Leo and V523 Cas,will evolve into the broken-contact configurations. 展开更多
