Event-related potentials associated with Chinese and English color-word Stroop tasks in Chinese bilinguals

Objective:To investigate the neural electrophysiologieal activity underlying Chinese and Eng- lish Stroop tasks for Chinese English bilinguals.Methods:Event-related potentials(ERPs)were recorded in 14 Chinese bilinguals with a moderate command of English when they performed the Stroop task pre- sented in English words and Chinese characters,respectively.Results:In Chinese task version,it was found an increased positivity over bilateral front-polar regions on incongruent trials compared with congru- ent trials,followed by an increased negativity over fronto-central region and an increased positivity over occipital region.While in English task version,only the increased negativity was observed over fronto-cen- tral region,but with reduced amplitude and anterior distribution.Conclusion:This increased negativity was proposed as an index of the resolution processes of conflicting information in the incongruent situa- tion.The increased positivity over occipital region on Chinese incongruent trials may indicate visually rechecking effect for Chinese character. 展开更多

The processing of relative clauses receives much concern from linguists. The finding that object relatives are easier to process than subiect relatives in Chinese challenges the notion that subject relative clauses are preferred universally. A large body of literature provides theories related to sentence processing mechanisms for native speakers but leaves one area relatively untouched: how bilinguals process sentences. This study is designed to examine the case where the individuals with a Chinese L1 language background process subject-extracted subject relative clauses (SS) and subject-extracted object relative clauses (SO) by using event- related potentials (ERPs) to probe into the real-time language processing and presents a direct manifestation of brain activity. The findings from this study support the subject relative clause preference due to the strong influence of English relative clause markedness and bilinguals' relative lower working memory capacity. 展开更多

Brain mechanism of metaphor processing has always been a focus in Neurolinguistics. This study approaches bilinguals' metaphor semantic representation mechanism with Chinese bilinguals with different levels of second language proficiency by means of ERP (Event-related Potentials) technology. The experiment results showed that: 1) Both hemispheres collaborate in metaphor processing with the left hemisphere serving a leading semantic recognition role. The left hemisphere is more sensitive to first language input, while the right hemisphere is more active to second language input. 2) Compared with Chinese learners of higher proficiency in L2, learners of lower proficiency tend to adopt more Chinese neural mechanism in processing English metaphors. 3) When learners process metaphors, the neural mechanism difference of learners of higher proficiency is smaller than that of those of lower proficiency. The higher the second language proficiency, the higher the degree of common representation of Chinese and English metaphor. 展开更多

This study investigates the acquisition of English/■/by Mandarin-English bilinguals from a developmental aspect.First,a detailed description of the acoustic and articulatory(ultrasound)characteristics of Mandarin/■/is provided to lay the foundation for the cross-linguistic comparison between English and Mandarin rhotic sounds.Second,it investigates if Mandarin-English bilinguals could successfully acquire English/■/sound.The results showed that Mandarin-English bilinguals could learn language-specific phonetic realizations for English/■/,establishing a new phonetic category for the similar L2 sound.In addition,as the language proficiency grows,Mandarin-English bilinguals became more native-like in production,but not in perception.It suggests a rather loose connection between production and perception in the speech acquisition for late bilinguals. 展开更多

This paper explores increased use of the concept of“medical bilingualism”since 2015 as scholars,especially of East Asian medical history and anthropology,have applied it to engagements between two medical systems.It reveals an ongoing evolution in the way that scholars understand what a medical system is and how medical systems are differentiated and compared with one another.The image of culturally homogeneous systems of meaning and practice that dominated mid-twentieth-century scholarship on medical systems(especially using the category of ethnomedicines)has been giving way to a more culturally heterogeneous and cosmopolitan picture of how medical practitioners evolve,integrate,and differentiate medical concepts and practices in the context of contemporary societies and the new forms of life they engender.This reformulated concept of medical bilingualism emphasizes the ways in which medical systems overlap yet remain distinct.First,the paper summarizes results of an experiment with AI searches on medical bilingualism,then narrates its historiography both pre-COVID-19 and during COVID-19,and finally concludes with some reflections on language ideology,multilingualism,and medical pluralism. 展开更多

This paper carefully probes into the main models of the bilingual education in the world, deeply analyses the conditions and requirements on the implementation of the bilingual education in our schools, and clearly differentiates TEFL and TESL as well as bilingual education. The writer thinks that in China we teach English as a foreign language instead of a second language, that the bilingual education is the supreme level of the foreign language acquisition, and that the final goal of the bilingual education is to make learners simultaneously think and use Chinese and English in both ways as well as communicate with one another in two languages according to the situational context. Therefore, it is not easy to practice the bilingual education in a country like China, which is still poor in the English language context.
