The cholesterol solution concentration sensing characteristics based on tilted fiber Bragg grating(TFBG) are investigated by means of theoretical analysis and experiments. We prepare two groups of cholesterol solutions with the same concentration range and different refractive index ranges. The sensitivity of the two groups of solutions was 11.83 pm·m L/mg and 124.79 pm·m L/mg, respectively. The results show that the sensitivity of cholesterol solution can be improved by adjusting the refractive index range. This conclusion is valuable for measuring the concentration of fat-soluble solution. 展开更多

When a film of soft matter solutions is being dried, a skin layer often forms at its surface, which is a gel-like elastic phase made of concentrated soft matter solutions. We study the dynamics of this process by using the solute based Lagrangian scheme which was proposed by us recently. In this scheme, the process of the gelation(i.e., the change from sol to gel) can be naturally incorporated in the diffusion equation. Effects of the elasticity of the skin phase, the evaporation rate of the solvents, and the initial concentration of the solutions are discussed. The spatial trusses are taken as an example for the solution of the analytical expressions of the explicit displacements which are proved mathematically; then some conclusions are reached that are useful to structural sensitivity analysis and optimization. In the third part of the paper, a generalized geometric programming method is sugviped for the optimal model with the explicit displacement. Finally, the analytical solutions of the displacements of three trusses are given as examples. 展开更多

Dual-environment feature fusion-based method for estimating building-scale population distributions

Information on the population distribution at the building scale can help governments make supplemental decisions to address complex urban management issues.However,the discontinuity and strong spatial heterogeneity of research units at the building scale make it challenging to fuse multi-source geographic data,which causes significant errors in population estimation.To address this problem,this study proposes a method for population estimation at the building scale based on Dual-Environment Feature Fusion(DEFF).The dual environments of buildings were constructed by splitting the physical boundaries and extracting features suitable for the dual-environment scale from multi-source geographic data to describe the complex environmental features of buildings.Meanwhile,Data Quality Weighting based Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution(DQW-TOPSIS)method was proposed to assign appropriate weights to the features of the external environment for better feature fusion.Finally,a regression model was established using dual-environment features for building-scale population estimation.The experimental areas chosen for this study were Jianghan and Wuchang Districts,both located in Wuhan City,China.The estimated results of the DEFF were compared with those of the ablation experiments,as well as three publicly accessible population datasets,specifically LandScan,WorldPop,and GHS-POP,at the community scale.The evaluation results showed that DEFF had an R2 of approximately 0.8,Mean Absolute Error(MAE)of approximately 1200,Root Mean Square Error(RMSE)of approximately 1700,and both Mean Absolute Percentage Error(MAPE)and Symmetric Mean Absolute Percentage Error(SMAPE)of approximately 26%,indicating an improved performance and verifying the validity of the proposed method for fine-scale population estimation. 展开更多

Engineering the electrical properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)holds great potential for various applications such as sensors,thermoelectric(TE)generators,and hole transport layers in solar cells.Various strategies have been applied to achieve optimal electrical properties,including base solution post-treatments.However,the working mechanism and the exact details of the structural transformations induced by base post-treatments are still unclear.In this work,we present a comparative study on the post-treatment effects of using three common and green alkali base solutions:namely LiOH,NaOH,and KOH.The structural modifications induced in the film by the base post-treatments are studied by techniques including atomic force microscopy,grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering,ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared spectroscopy,and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy.Base-induced structural modifications are responsible for an improvement in the TE power factor of the films,which depends on the basic solution used.The results are explained on the basis of the different affinity between the alkali cations and the PSS chains,which determines PEDOT dedoping.The results presented here shed light on the structural reorganization occurring in PEDOT:PSS when exposed to high-pH solutions and may serve as inspiration to create future pH-/ion-responsive devices for various applications. 展开更多

For the development of fiber optics for the range from 0.2 to 50.0 μm, one needs light-stable, nonhygroscopic, ductile crystals that would be transparent within this spectral range and have a lack of cleavage, and from which the flexible infrared (IR) fibers are extruded. The crystals based on solid solutions of silver and monadic thallium haides meet the conditions listed above. Consequently, by differential thermal and x ray analyses, we study the TIBr-TII phase diagram using the crystals with optimal compositions, which we grow ourselves. We also manu- facture light-stable nanocrystalline IR fibers that are transparent at longer wavelengths compared with AgC1-AgBr fibers. 展开更多

Agricultural systems result of the coevolution between social and natural systems,where biodiversity and natural resources play an important role,emerging interactions between crops and the natural environment that allow the development of ecological processes which interact with external inputs.This research aims to describe the agricultural practices developed by the Guarani Indigenous people in the agricultural systems located within the biodiversity corridor of the Upper Parana Atlantic Forest.This exploratory study is focused on multiple cases,with a qualitative approach and from data collected during 2017 and 2018 in eleven indigenous communities.The main practices developed for the management of biodiversity are polyculture,rotation,and embroideries;they also practice agroforestry and livestock-raising.The main difficulty they face is the reduction of the surrounding biodiversity,which affects the sustainability of the system.This study shows ways for nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based adaptation according to current needs for greening the economy. 展开更多

Awareness of the same amongst the citizens can be one of the best ways to initiate a decline in the positive census of the disease. We use this paper to illustrate an optimization model where the budget can be distributed based on the census data of the risk factors involved. It uses a non-linear programming model and can easily be modified into a linear one. The alternative options and constraints too, are mentioned in the paper. The results show that the mid-western states need more share of the allocation based on risk factors. The model distributes the percentage of the budget allocated to different states based on a fixed risk factor constraint. 展开更多

Water-related hazards, such as river floods, flash floods and droughts, are becoming more frequent in the Upper Chao Phraya River Basin, Thailand, due to climate change and urbanization, causing significant societal, economic, and environmental damage. This study supports decision-making for nature-based solutions (NBS) to address mitigate these hazards. Using multi-criteria decision analysis, simulation modeling, and spatial analysis, the study identified precipitation and river discharges as key hazard drivers. Mapping hazard severity at various scales, the findings suggest that expanding green areas and water storage can enhance water management and reduce hazard impacts. This research offers critical insights for NBS adoption in water-related risk reduction. 展开更多
