Arugula(Eruca sativa Mill.),as an edible medicinal vegetable of peculiar flavor,is served as uncooked dish.The influence of variable lighting intensity(LI)on the growth characteristics and nutritional quality of hydro...Arugula(Eruca sativa Mill.),as an edible medicinal vegetable of peculiar flavor,is served as uncooked dish.The influence of variable lighting intensity(LI)on the growth characteristics and nutritional quality of hydroponically grown arugula was investigated by using light-emitting diodes(LEDs)to light the hydroponically grown arugula for a reference for industrialized arugula production.The dynamic demands of arugula for LI in the seedling stage,initial growth stage and vigorous growth stage were tested under two light quality conditions including a red/blue light ratio of 7:1 and a light/dark photoperiod of 12 h/12 h.Then,the curves of variable LI-induced changes in the growth indices of arugula in different development periods were drawn.Next,the influence of variable LI on the growth characteristics and nutritional quality of arugula was investigated by measuring the dry/fresh weight ratio,chlorophyll content,vitamin C content and soluble protein content.Variable LI significantly increased the height,stem diameter,leaf width,dry/fresh weight ratio,chlorophyll content and soluble protein content of arugula plant.Plant height,stem diameter,dry/fresh weight ratio,chlorophyll content and soluble protein content were the highest in the group exposed to LI of 200,300 and 300μmol•m^(-2)•s^(-1)during the seedling stage,initial growth stage and vigorous growth stage,respectively.The greatest leaf width was achieved at LI of 100,250 and 350μmol•m^(-2)•s^(-1),respectively.High intensity LI markedly repressed the synthesis of vitamin C.展开更多
The paper presents an efficient form of growing arugula plants by means of automatic control of an aeroponic culture irrigation system.The system considers a reprogrammable electronic circuit that uses software to gen...The paper presents an efficient form of growing arugula plants by means of automatic control of an aeroponic culture irrigation system.The system considers a reprogrammable electronic circuit that uses software to generate different irrigation cycles to obtain an adequate growth of arugula crops.Results show how different samples grown in a greenhouse had the same growth behavior as field-grown samples during the test period.It was possible to obtain a more efficient and sustained five-week production to supply consumers by having a continuous cycle irrigation system,which was operated for 35 d.The growth and number of leaves were maintained in a similar way for different plants analyzed.Roots grow similarly,but some of them showed size differences during the five weeks.展开更多

Eruca vesicaria subsp.sativa is a leafy vegetable of the Brassicaceae family known for its pungency.Variation in grow-ing conditions,leaf age,agronomic practices,and variety choice lead to inconsistent quality,especia...Eruca vesicaria subsp.sativa is a leafy vegetable of the Brassicaceae family known for its pungency.Variation in grow-ing conditions,leaf age,agronomic practices,and variety choice lead to inconsistent quality,especially in content of isothiocyanates(ITCs)and their precursor glucosinolates(GSLs).We present the first linkage and Quantitative Trait Loci(QTL)map for Eruca,generated using a population of 139 F_(4) lines.A significant environmental effect on the abun-dance of primary and secondary metabolites was observed,with UK-grown plants containing significantly higher concentrations of glucoraphanin,malic acid,and total sugars.Italian-grown plants were characterized by higher concentrations of glucoerucin,indolic GSLs,and low monosaccharides.20 QTL were identified and associated with robust SNP markers.Five genes putatively associated with the synthesis of the GSL 4-methoxyglucobrassicin(4MGB)were identified as candidate regulators underlying QTL.Analysis revealed that orthologs of MYB51,IGMT1 and IGMT4 present on LG1 are associated with 4MGB concentrations in Eruca.This research illustrates the utility of the map for identifying genes associated with nutritional composition in Eruca and its value as a genetic resource to assist breed-ing programs for this leafy vegetable crop.展开更多
