On one hand, such multi-tool setups offer the advantages of reduced down-time and cost of production and require less space and in-process inventory, and on the other hand, require proper tool management for economic operations. A number of strategies have been devised to solve the tool selection problems and a number of tool replacement policies have been proposed in the past. These strategies have been solved in isolation, whereas, a comprehensive algorithm for proper selection of tools out of those available in the tool magazine for performing operation and for replacement of tools on failure/wear is necessary. In this paper, taking cue from the computer memory management policies, four tool selection strategies have been presented and their performance in tandem with various tool replacement policies has been studied. The effect of important parameters such as reduction of tool life due to regrinding, limited number of regrindings, catastrophic failures etc. have been considered. Cost has been computed for each combination of tool selection and replacement policy. Also, the number of machine stoppages has been worked out in each case. The results indicate that the combination of various selection strategies with suitable replacement policies affects the overall cost.展开更多

Data were collected using conditional surveys through key informant interviews with the project’s district stakeholders in each district, focused group discussions with selected villagers and participatory mapping of natural resources. Soil health, land degradation, carbon stock, and hydrological conditions were assessed in the seven pilot villages in all seven districts using DMTs as part of testing and validation. Results indicated soils of poor to medium health, and land degradation as portrayed by gullies and wind erosion in lowlands and better in uplands. Carbon and forest disturbance status could not be assessed using one-year data but hydrological analysis revealed that water resources were relatively good in uplands and poor in the lowlands. Challenges with regard to land use include increased gully erosion, decreased stream flow, reduced vegetation cover due to shifting from coffee with tree sheds to annual crops farming, cultivation near water sources, and overgrazing. Empowering the community with decision making tools at village level is essential to ensure that village land uses are planned in a participatory manner for sustainable land and natural resources management in Kilimanjaro and other regions in Tanzania.展开更多

These issues require efficient risk management techniques. The success of construction companies running projects in international markets depends on how the risks arise from the host country conditions as well as the project specific risk factors. Successful management of risks requires identification of risks, construction of a risk model which can be used to assess the magnitude of risks, and implementation of response strategies so that an acceptable risk-return balance can be achieved. The project success usually depends on the combination of all risks, response strategies used to mitigate risks, and a company's ability to manage them. There exists a need to develop risk models containing the risks of doing business in international markets and factors that affect manageability of these risks. One of the market's critical challenges is scheduled management and the understanding and application of program management. This paper uses systematic risk identification, classification and analysis, and measurement and response methodologies to help international contractors quantify the risks of project development and accomplishment.展开更多

The paper ...Healthcare waste management (HCWM) is an important aspect of healthcare delivery globally because of its hazardous and infectious components that have potential for adverse health and environmental impacts. The paper introduces a set of indicators for assessing HCWM systems in hospitals. These indicators are: HCWM policies and standard operating procedures, management and oversight, logistics and budget support, training and occupational health and safety, and treatment, disposal and waste treatment equipment housing. By plotting a mark on a continuum which is defined as good and poor on the extremes and is connected with all other marks in a spoke arrangement, it’s possible to describe a baseline for HCWM in any specific hospital. This baseline can be used to improve awareness of the actors and policy-makers, compare the same hospital at a different point in time, to compare observations by different evaluators and to track improvements. Results suggest that in Kenya, the application of such indicators is useful for evaluating which priorities should be addressed to improve outcomes in HCWM systems. Systematic sampling technique was used to identify and collect data by use of observational checklist, interviews, visual verification and review of documents and a HCWM assessment tool. The objective is to suggest an integrated management tool as a method to identify prevailing problems with a HCWM system. The method can be replicated in other contexts worldwide, with a focus on the developing world. The integrated indicators focus on management of HCW and not its potential impact on human health and environment, an area recognized to be critical for future research.展开更多

By elucidating the multifaceted nature of this condition, healthcare providers can better identify individuals at risk, implement preventive measures, and optimize treatment to reduce the burden of osteoporotic fractures.
文摘Objective:This study was designed to determine the nurse assessment of postoperative pain and its management in selected hospitals,Benin City,Edo State,Nigeria.Materials and Methods:A descriptive cross-sectional survey was adopted. The target population consist of 222 purposely nurses who are in the cadre of nursing officer II to chief nursing officer who works in the various surgical wards/units of the selected health facilities. The data were collected from the participants using the pretested structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. Results:Results showed that 66.2%of nurses had a poor level of knowledge on postoperative pain assessment. The McGill Pain Questionnaire was the most used pain assessment tool with a mean score of 2.84 whereas the Dallas Pain Questionnaire was the least used with a mean score of 1.90.“Providing clean, calm, and well-ventilated ward environment”(3.69±0.61)was the most used nonpharmacological method for postoperative pain management, followed by“distraction, relaxation, and guided imagery”(3.52±0.50),“dressing,bandage,splint,and reinforce wound sites postoperatively”(3.39±0.54),and“early ambulation/exercise”(3.20±0.62).The most used pharmacological interventions were“acetaminophen”(3.63±0.55),“topical anesthetic”(2.92±0.62),“nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs”(2.87±0.43),and“mixed opioid agonist-antagonist”(2.56±0.56).Conclusion:There is a poor level of knowledge on postoperative pain assessment among nurses in this study setting. It is,therefore, pertinent for hospitals to organize continuous in-service training for postoperative pain assessment and management, especially on nonpharmacological approaches among nurses.
文摘Healthcare waste management (HCWM) is an important aspect of healthcare delivery globally because of its hazardous and infectious components that have potential for adverse health and environmental impacts. The integrated indicators focus on management of HCW and not its potential impact on human health and environment, an area recognized to be critical for future research.

文摘Developmental and reproductive toxicity(DART)endpoint entails a toxicological assessment of all developmental stages and reproductive cycles of an organism. In silico tools to predict DART will provide a method to assess this complex toxicity endpoint and will be valuable for screening emerging pollutants as well as for m anaging new chemicals in China.Currently, there are few published DART prediction models in China, but many related research and development projects are in progress. In 2013,WU et al.published an expert rule-based DART decision tree(DT).This DT relies on known chemical structures linked to DART to forecast DART potential of a given chemical.Within this procedure,an accurate DART data interpretation is the foundation of building and expanding the DT.This paper excerpted case studies demonstrating DART data curation and interpretation of four chemicals(including 8-hydroxyquinoline,3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol,thiacloprid,and imidacloprid)to expand the existing DART DT.Chemicals were first selected from the database of Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Center,Ministry of Ecology and Environment(MEESCC)in China. The structures of these 4 chemicals were analyzed and preliminarily grouped by chemists based on core structural features, functional groups, receptor binding property, metabolism, and possible mode of actions. Then, the DART conclusion was derived by collecting chemical information, searching, integrating, and interpreting DART data by the toxicologists. Finally, these chemicals were classified into either an existing category or a new category via integrating their chemical features,DART conclusions, and biological properties. The results showed that 8-hydroxyquinoline impacted estrous cyclicity,s exual organ weights, and embryonal development, and 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol caused central nervous system(CNS)malformations, which were added to an existing subcategory 8e(aromatic compounds with multi-halogen and nitro groups)of the DT.Thiacloprid caused dystocia and fetal skeletal malformation, and imidacloprid disrupted the endocrine system and male fertility. They both contain 2-chloro-5-methylpyridine substituted imidazolidine c yclic ring, which were expected to create a new category of neonicotinoids. The current work delineates a t ransparent process of curating toxicological data for the purpose of DART data interpretation. In the presence of sufficient related structures and DART data, the DT can be expanded by iteratively adding chemicals within the a pplicable domain of each category or subcategory. This DT can potentially serve as a tool for screening emerging pollutants and assessing new chemicals in China.
