Thediagnosis of Dry EyeDisease(DED),however, usually depends on clinical information and complex,high-dimensional datasets. To improve the performance of classification models, this paper proposes a Computer Aided Design(CAD)system that presents a new method for DED classification called(IAOO-PSO),which is a powerful Feature Selection technique(FS)that integrates with Opposition-Based Learning(OBL)and Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO).We improve the speed of convergence with the PSO algorithmand the exploration with the IAOO algorithm. The IAOO is demonstrated to possess superior global optimization capabilities,as validated on the IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation 2022(CEC’22)benchmark suite and compared with seven Metaheuristic(MH)algorithms.Additionally,an IAOO-PSO model based on Support Vector Machines(SVMs)classifier is proposed for FS and classification, where the IAOO-PSO is used to identify the most relevant features. This model was applied to the DED dataset comprising 20,000 cases and 26 features, achieving a high classification accuracy of 99.8%,which significantly outperforms other optimization algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate the reliability, success, and efficiency of the IAOO-PSO technique for both FS and classification in the detection of DED. 展开更多

Rapid technical advances in the field of computeropened new avenues in animal behavior research.animation (CA) and virtual reality (VR) haveAnimated stimuli are powerful tools as theyoffer standardization, repeatability, and complete control over the stimulus presented, thereby"reducing" and "replacing" the animals used, and "refining" the experimental design in line withthe 3Rs. However, appropriate use of these technologies raises conceptual and technical questions. In this review, we offer guidelines for common technical and conceptual considerations related tothe use of animated stimuli in animal behavior research. Following the steps required to create ananimated stimulus, we discuss (I) the creation, (11) the presentation, and (111) the validation of CAsand VRs. Although our review is geared toward computer-graphically designed stimuli, consider-ations on presentation and validation also apply to video playbacks. CA and VR allow both new be-havioral questions to be addressed and existing questions to be addressed in new ways, thus weexpect a rich future for these methods in both ultimate and proximate studies of animal behavior. 展开更多

This invited review is based upon a recent oral paper I presented at the Virtual Reality Symposiumof the 34th International Ethological Conference (2015, Cairns, Australia), and as such it describesstudies conducted mainly in my own laboratory. It reviews how we utilized visual stimuli for induc-ing behavioral responses in the zebrafish with a focus on shoaling, group forming behavior. Thezebrafish is gaining increasing popularity in neuroscience. With this interest, its behavior is alsomore frequently studied. One of the many advantages of the zebrafish over traditional laboratoryrodents is that this species is diurnal, and it relies heavily upon its visual system. Thus, similarly toour own species, zebrafish respond to visual stimuli in a robust and easily quantifiable manner. Forthe past decade, we have been exploring how to use such visual stimuli, and have developed nu-merous paradigms with which we can induce and quantify a variety of behavioral responses, including shoaling. This review summarizes some of these studies, and discusses questions includ-ing whether one should use live fish as stimulus, whether and how one could present animated(moving images) of fish, and how one could optimize a range of stimulus presentation parametersto elicit the most robust responses in zebrafish. Although the zebrafish is a relative newcomer inethology and behavioral neuroscience, and although many of our findings only represent the firststeps in this research, our results suggest that the behavioral analysis of the zebrafish will have animportant place in biomedical research. 展开更多

Color has an intuitive expression of the material world, and is often used by creators of animated films in the narrative process of the film to express a creator’s subjective feelings.Color narration is a special mental imagination activity. It mainly refers to human beings perceiving colors in the external environment, and judging by their own rich life experience, and finally achieving a comprehensive cognition of external things. The animated film Ne Zha has attracted the attention of the audience since its release. That is because the film uses color narration ingeniously to innovate traditional stories and familiar characters,it displays the story through shocking visual expression,so that the audience can feel the influence of traditional culture while understanding the story, reflecting the unique artistic charm of color narration. This paper analyzes three aspects of color narration in showing the binary oppositions of goodness and evil, portraying vivid characters, promoting the development of narration, and highlighting the tension of the film, and fully expounds the importance of color narration in animated films. 展开更多

Objective: Mood Assessment via Animated Characters (MAAC) is a novel, computer-based instrument to improve assessment and communication about feelings in young children with internalizing distress. Well-validated assessment instruments are lacking for those under age eight years. Method: Children ages 4 - 10 years with primary diagnosis of anxiety disorder (n = 74;33 boys, 41 girls) or no diagnosis (n = 83;40 boys, 43 girls) completed MAAC for 16 feelings. Those 8 - 10 years also completed standardized measures of internalizing symptoms. Results: MAAC’s emotions clustered into positive, negative, fearful, and calm/neutral factors. Clinical children rated themselves less positive (difference score -3.18;p = 0.002) and less calm/neutral (difference score -2.06;p = 0.04), and explored fewer emotions spontaneously (difference score = -2.37;p = 0.02) than nonanxious controls. Older children’s responses correlated with scores on several standardized measures. Conclusions: MAAC appears to be highly engaging, with clinical utility in the assessment of young anxious children. Applications in other populations are considered for future study. 展开更多

Based on the software support of SIMAN/CINEMA, this paper presents anintegrated approach to flexible modelling and simulation with animation. Themethodology provides a structured way of integrating mathematical and logicalmodel, statistical experimentation, and statistical analysis with computeranimation. Within this methodology, an animated simulation study is separatedinto six different activities: simulation objectives identification, system modeldevelopment, simulation experiment specification, animation layoutconstruction, real-time simulation and animation run, and output dataanalysis. These six activities are objectives driven, relatively independent, andintegrate through software organization and simulation files. The key ideasbehind this methodology are objectives orientation, modelling flexibility, simulation and animation integration, and application tailorability. Though themethodology is closely related to SIMAN/CINEMA, it can be extended to othersoftware environments. 展开更多

Cartographic animation has been developed and widely used in geo-visualisation and many other areas in recent years. The usability of animated maps is a key characteristic affecting map users’effectiveness and efficiency in accomplishing tasks. In this paper,an eye tracking approach was proposed as a visual analytics method to evaluate the usability of animated maps by capturing participants’eye movement data and quantitatively analysing the accuracy(effectiveness)and response time(efficiency)of users’task completion. In the study,a set of animated traffic maps represented by three important visual variables(colour hue, size and frequency)was used for the usability evaluation. The experimental results showed that the usability of these three visual variables for cartographic animation affects the usability of animated maps.Red,yellow, and aqua were found to convey map information more effectively than other colour hues.Size was found to be more usable than colour hues for both animated maps and static maps.Usability was not found to be proportional to the playback rate of animated maps.Furthermore, the usability of the frequency, colour hue,and size was found to be related to the display’s size.We hope that the analysis approach presented in this paper and the results of this study will be of help in the design of cartographic animation displays with better usability. 展开更多

Traumatic brain injury can be categorized into primary and secondary injuries.Secondary injuries are the main cause of disability following traumatic brain injury, which involves a complex multicellular cascade.Microglia play an important role in secondary injury and can be activated in response to traumatic brain injury. In this article,we review the origin and classification of microglia as well as the dynamic changes of microglia in traumatic brain injury. We also clarify the microglial polarization pathways and the therapeutic drugs targeting activated microglia. We found that regulating the signaling pathways involved in pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory microglia, such as the Toll-like receptor 4/nuclear factor-kappa B,mitogen-activated protein kinase,Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription, phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B,Notch, and high mobility group box 1 pathways, can alleviate the inflammatory response triggered by microglia in traumatic brain injury, thereby exerting neuroprotective effects. We also reviewed the strategies developed on the basis of these pathways, such as drug and cell replacement therapies.Drugs that modulate inflammatory factors, such as rosuvastatin, have been shown to promote the polarization of antiinflammatory microglia and reduce the inflammatory response caused by traumatic brain injury.Mesenchymal stem cells possess anti-inflammatory properties, and clinical studies have confirmed their significant efficacy and safety in patients with traumatic brain injury.Additionally, advancements in mesenchymal stem cell-delivery methods—such as combinations of novel biomaterials, genetic engineering, and mesenchymal stem cell exosome therapy—have greatly enhanced the efficiency and therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stem cells in animal models. However, numerous challenges in the application of drug and mesenchymal stem cell treatment strategies remain to be addressed. In the future, new technologies, such as single-cell RNA sequencing and transcriptome analysis, can facilitate further experimental studies. Moreover, research involving non-human primates can help translate these treatment strategies to clinical practice. 展开更多

For many information visualization applications, showing the transition when interacting with the data is critically important as it can help users better perceive the changes and understand the underlying data. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of animated transition in a tiled image layout where the spiral arrangement of the images is based on their similarity. Three aspects of animated transition are considered, including animation steps, animation actions, and flying paths. Exploring and weighting the advantages and disadvantages of different methods for each aspect and in conjunction with the characteristics of the spiral image layout, we present an integrated solution, called AniMap, for animating the transition from an old layout to a new layout when a different image is selected as the query image. We show the effectiveness of our animated transition solution by demonstrating experimental results and conducting a comparative user study. 展开更多
