Pentaploid hybrids produced from crosses between hexaploid and tetraploid wheats combine the genetic variation of both parents.Crossing a synthetic hexaploid wheat LM/AT23 with its AB-genome donor, the durum wheat LM,and selfing the pentaploid hybrids to the F7 generation yielded mostly euploid tetraploids and a few hexaploids. Two special derivatives of tetraploid were isolated, including a 4D(4B)substitution line with large panicles and high resistance to stripe rust and a 2DS.2AL translocation line with non-waxy epidermis. The discovery of small D-genome introgressions in the A and B genomes suggested that pentaploidization can be used to induce homoeologous recombination. The introgression of D genome from Aegilops tauschii to the AB genomes might promote the development of super tetraploid wheat with hexaploid biological characteristics(especially stress resistance)and quality functions and the functional study of the introduced chromosomes or fragments. 展开更多

Managing invasive species requires identifying the factors that determine alien species invasion success. This study investigates how anthropogenic and biogeographical factors influence alien plant invasion in the Sanyang Wetlands,a human-dominated island system in Wenzhou City,China.Specifically,we analyzed whether human activities(e.g.,habitat heterogeneity, proportion of road area, and cultivation)and island characteristics(e.g.,island area, isolation)affect the diversity of native and invasive plant species similarly. We also assessed the applicability of the equilibrium theory of island biogeography to invasive plant species diversity and examined how these factors affect invasive plant species with different dispersal syndromes(anemochore, zoochore, and autochore). We found that both invasive and native species richness positively correlate with island area, habitat heterogeneity, and proportion of road area. However, although native species richness was negatively correlated with isolation, invasive species richness was not.The diversity and composition of invasive species with different dispersal syndromes were determined by different variables;for example, the composition and diversity of zoochores was increased by habitat heterogeneity, while anemochore species richness was increased by the proportion of road area, whereas anemochore species composition was influenced by distance to the nearest island. We conclude that habitat fragmentation differentially affects invasive and native plant diversity, aligning with the predictions of the equilibrium theory of island biogeography only for native species but not for invasive species. Our findings indicate that tailoring habitat attributes and regulating human activities could be effective strategies for mitigating the spread of invasive species in fragmented landscapes. 展开更多

Invasive alien species(IAS)significantly threaten global biodiversity and ecosystem stability.Despite increasing management efforts,a critical knowledge gap existed in understanding commonalities and disparities among national strategies. We analyzed several IAS management lists from 23 countries and the European Union, focusing specifically on vascular plant species within these lists.List composition, characteristics, and associated management measures were analyzed.Key patterns in species prioritization across national lists and intercontinental exchange of invasive alien plants(IAPs)were identified.Pistia stratiotes,Pontederia crassipes,Salvinia molesta,Cabomba caroliniana,Ulex europaeus were identified as globally recognized threats, being listed by at least 33.3%of analyzed countries and invading five or more continents.Aquatic plants were found to be more frequently included in management lists.A significant directional invasion pattern between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres was identified.Species native to Asia were observed to dominate as significant donors of IAPs across continents. The analysis of list management strategies highlighted substantial gaps in achieving Target 6 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, particularly in species prioritization and inclusion of potential IAPs.In response to these challenges,a tiered classification system for invasive alien species list was proposed, encompassing High-Priority,Watchlist,Potential,and Priority Site categories, which aimed at enhancing management effectiveness by tailoring strategies to different invasion stages and ecological contexts. This study could contribute to understanding global IAPs management strategies and serve as a reference for policymakers and conservation managers to identify priority IAPs and refine management approaches. 展开更多

Invasive alien plant species(IAPS)pose severe threats to global biodiversity conservation.Effective management of IAPS requires mapping their distribution and identifying the environmental factors that drive their spread. The Gaoligong Mountains,a renowned biodiversity hotspot in southwestern China, currently face the dual challenges of IAPS invasion and climate change. However,we know little about the distribution patterns, key environmental drivers, and sensitivity of IAPS to future climate change in this region. In this study,we mapped IAPS richness distribution and identified invasion hotspots throughout the Gaoligong Mountains. In addition,we assessed the relative importance of environmental variables in shaping the spatial distribution of IAPS richness and projected potential shifts in IAPS richness under various climate change scenarios. We identified 161 IAPS,primarily concentrated in the low-elevation tropical and subtropical regions along river valleys, forming belt-like invasion hotspots. The key factors shaping IAPS richness included disturbance complexity, elevation, seasonal precipitation, and vegetation types.Notably,IAPS richness significantly declined with increasing elevation and latitude but increased with higher disturbance complexity. Moreover,IAPS were more prevalent in grasslands and shrublands than in forested areas.Ensemble modeling of future climate scenarios predicted that the distribution of IAPS richness would shift to progressively higher elevations. These findings provide valuable insights for managing IAPS in mountainous regions that play a crucial role in global biodiversity conservation. 展开更多

In modern society, influenced by mass culture and internal alienation, people experience alienation in the consumption field. The impulsive and excessive consumption of consumers not only reflects the changes in consumption culture but is also the result of the combined action of market, technological, and psychological factors. The shopping spree in the context of e-commerce festival creation is due to the hard control of science and technology and the soft penetration of mass culture, which fully invade individuals’work and life, evoke false and excessive demands, and thus generate consumption. The practical path to get rid of consumption alienation and return to rational consumption can start from three aspects:aesthetic awakening, concept guidance, and environmental regulation. 展开更多

Predicting whether alien species will invade a native community is a key challenge in invasion ecology. One factor that may help predict invasion success is phylogenetic relatedness.Darwin proposed that closely related species tend to share similar niches, although this relationship may be influenced by various ecological and evolutionary factors. To test this,we classified alien Asteraceae species in China into three categories based on their invasion status and the extent of ecological damage:introduced, naturalized, and invasive. We then compared the genetic relationships and niche overlap between alien and native Asteraceae species. We found that invasive Asteraceae species are more closely related to native Asteraceae species than are introduced and naturalized species. However, alien Asteraceae species(including introduced, naturalized, and invasive species)exhibited relatively low niche overlap with native Asteraceae species. These findings suggest that the main premise underlying Darwin’s naturalization conundrum, namely, the universality of phylogenetic niche conservatism, may not hold true.Instead, our findings indicate that alien species are more likely to invade successfully when they are more closely related to native plants, exhibit less niche overlap, and maintain conservative niches during the invasion process. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms of alien plant invasions, highlight the relationship between alien species invasions and native community vulnerability, and offer important insights into the development of effective biological invasion management strategies. 展开更多

Exotic plant invasions and increased atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2))concentration have been determined to independently affect soil nematodes,a key component of soil biota. However, little is known about the long-term effects of these two global change factors and their interactive effects.Over three consecutive years,we cultivated invasive alien plant Xanthium strumarium and its two phylogenetically related natives under both ambient(aCO_(2))and elevated(eCO_(2))atmospheric CO_(2)concentrations,and determined the effects of the invader and natives on soil nematodes under different CO_(2)concentrations and the relevant mechanism. The abundance of total soil nematodes and that of the dominant trophic group(herbivores)were significantly affected by plant species and CO_(2)concentration,and these effects were dependent on the experimental duration, however, the Shannon-diversity of nematodes was not affected by these factors.Under aCO_(2),both invasive and native species significantly increased the total nematode abundance and that of the dominant trophic group with increasing experimental duration, and the amplitude of the increase was greater under the invader relative to the natives. The eCO_(2)increased total nematode abundance(second year)and that of the dominant trophic group(third year)under the invader, but not under the natives(or even decreased)with increasing experimental duration.Root litter had greater effects on soil nematode abundance than leaf litter and root exudates did. This study indicates that eCO_(2)would aggravate effects of invasive plants on soil nematodes by increasing abundance, and these effects would vary with the duration. 展开更多

Fusarium head blight(FHB)threatens wheat production worldwide.Utilization of FHB resistant varieties is the most effective solution for disease control.Owing to the limited sources of FHB resistance, mining of novel resistance genes is crucial. Here,we report an FHB resistance gene from a wild wheat relative species,Roegneria ciliaris and developed FHB resistant germplasm containing this gene.Wheat-R.ciliaris disomic addition line DA3S^(c) showed enhanced type II FHB resistance compared to its sister line 3S^(c)-Null without chromosome 3S^(c),indicating that the resistance was contributed by the addition of 3S^(c).The resistance gene on 3S^(c) was validated using F_(2) and F_(2:3) populations derived from the cross between DA3S^(c) and susceptible Aikang 58(a susceptible cultivar),demonstrating that the lines with 3S^(c) had significantly enhanced FHB resistance compared to the individuals without 3S^(c).This was the second resistance gene identified in R.ciliaris, designated FhbRc2.To transfer FhbRc2 to common wheat,we produced a doublemonosomic chromosome population by crossing DA3S^(c) with the Chinese Spring nulli-tetrasomic line N3DT3B.Eight alien chromosome lines containing 3S^(c) were identified using genomic/fluorescence in situ hybridization and 3S^(c)-specific marker analysis.Only the lines carrying the long arm of 3S^(c) conferred FHB resistance, further locating FhbRc2 on 3S^(c)L.A compensating wheat-R.ciliaris Robertsonian translocation line T3DS·3S^(c)L harboring FhbRc2 is developed and provides a potential genetic resource in wheat breeding for enhanced FHB resistance. 展开更多

Relict subtropical coniferous forests in China face severe fragmentation, resulting in declining populations, and some are under significant threat from invasive alien species.Despite the crucial importance of understanding forest dynamics, knowledge gaps persist, particularly regarding the impact of invasive plants on vulnerable natives like Keteleeria evelyniana. In this study,we investigated the impact of invasive plants on the regeneration of forests dominated by K.evelyniana,a subtropical relict species in southwestern China. For this purpose,we characterized forest dynamics of 160 forest plots featuring K.evelyniana as the primary dominant species and determined whether the presence of invasive plants was correlated with regeneration of K.evelyniana.We identified four distinct forest types in which K.evelyniana was dominant. We found that radial growth of K.evelyniana trees is faster in younger ageclasses today than it was for older trees at the same age.The population structure of K.evelyniana in each forest type exhibited a multimodal age-class distribution. However, three forest types lacked established saplings younger than 10 years old,a situation attributed to the dense coverage of the invasive alien Ageratina adenophora. This invasive species resulted in a reduction of understory species diversity.Additionally, our analysis uncovered a significant negative correlation in phylogenetic relatedness(net relatedness index)between native and invasive alien plant species in eastern Yunnan. This suggests closely related invasive species face heightened competition, hindering successful invasion.Taken together, our findings indicate that successful establishment and habitat restoration of K.evelyniana seedling/saplings require effective measures to control invasive plants. 展开更多

Biological invasion is triggered by human development activities such as the construction and expansion of road networks.Road verges serve as important habitats and corridors for the distribution of invasive alien plant species(IAPS)between geographically distant habitats. However, the trajectory of plant invasion and the data regarding the impact of roads on IAPS distribution are relatively poor in Nepal. Here,we surveyed two road types(main roads and feeder road)in the Middle Mountain region of central Nepal in order to investigate how different road types are driving the dispersal of IAPS along road verges and the adjacent natural habitats.Systematic sampling was conducted at ca 2.5 km intervals along the roads. At each sampling site, paired plots(25 m×4 m)were sampled:one adjacent to and along the road, and another 20 m away and parallel to it in the interior habitat. Our results revealed that the main road verges had a higher cover(33%)and a larger number of IAPS(14 species)than the feeder road(25%;10 species). The IAPS cover and richness were significantly higher along verges than in the adjacent interior habitats for both road types, indicating that roads are contributing as corridors for the dispersal of IAPS in the Middle Mountain areas of central Nepal.Further, elevation, tree canopy, and disturbances(grazing/mowing/trampling)were found to be the key factors that determine spatial distribution of IAPS along road verges. We emphasize that regular monitoring of vegetation along the road verges can help with the early detection and control of potential IAPS in the region before they become problematic. 展开更多

Charismatic species are often reported by the media, providing information for detecting population status and public perception. To identify the number and distribution of free-living Black Swan(Cygnus atratus),a charismatic alien species in Chinese mainland and to detect the public and the media attitudes to the species,we analyzed the reports and emotional tendency from media coverage in 2000-2022 using manual reading, crawler extraction and latent Dirichlet allocation.A total of 6654 Black Swans were reported at 711 sites, including 147 individuals at 30 nature reserves.Successful breeding was reported at one-fourth of the total sites, including five nature reserves. The proportion of positive emotional tendency to Black Swans was overwhelming in the reports and was higher than that to alien species in general, suggesting that the public and the media are unaware of the risk of biological invasion.Effective management of invasive species requires the media clarifies the invasion risk of charismatic alien species.Promoting the unity between the harmfulness of abstract concept of alien species and the charisma of a specific alien species among the public help effective management. 展开更多
