Shallow Water Waves with Surface Tension by Laplace–Adomian Decomposition

This study presents a numerical investigation of shallow water wave dynamics with particular emphasis on the role of surface tension.In the absence of surface tension,shallow water waves are primarily driven by gravity and are well described by the classical Boussinesq equation,which incorporates fourth-order dispersion.Under this framework,solitary and shock waves arise through the balance of nonlinearity and gravity-induced dispersion,producing waveforms whose propagation speed,amplitude,and width depend largely on depth and initial disturbance.The resulting dynamics are comparatively smoother,with solitary waves maintaining coherent structures and shock waves displaying gradual transitions.When surface tension is incorporated,however,the dynamics become significantly richer.Surface tension introduces additional sixth-order dispersive terms into the governing equation,extending the classical model to the sixth-order Boussinesq equation.This higher-order dispersion modifies the balance between nonlinearity and dispersion,leading to sharper solitary wave profiles,altered shock structures,and a stronger sensitivity of wave stability to parametric variations.Surface tension effects also change the scaling laws for wave amplitude and velocity,producing conditions where solitary waves can narrow while maintaining large amplitudes,or where shock fronts steepen more rapidly compared to the tension-free case.These differences highlight how capillary forces,though often neglected in macroscopic wave studies,play a fundamental role in shaping dynamics at smaller scales or in systems with strong fluid–interface interactions.The analysis in this work is carried out using the Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Method(LADM),chosen for its efficiency and accuracy in solving high-order nonlinear partial differential equations.The numerical scheme successfully recovers both solitary and shock wave solutions under the sixth-order model,with error analysis confirming remarkably low numerical deviations.These results underscore the robustness of the method while demonstrating the profound contrast between shallow water wave dynamics without and with surface tension. 展开更多

In this paper, the... Site engineering seismic survey provides basic data for seismic effect analysis. As an important parameter of soil, shear-wave velocity is usually obtained through wave velocity testing in borehole. In this paper, the passive source surface-wave method is introduced into the site engineering seismic survey and practically applied in an engineering site of Shijingshan District. By recording the ubiquitous weak vibration on the earth surface, extract the dispersion curve from the surface-wave components using the SPAC method and obtain the shear-wave velocity structure from inversion. Over the depth of 42 m under- ground, it totally consists of five layers with interface depth of 3.31, 4.50, 7.23, 17.41, and 42.00 m; and shear-wave velocity of 144.0, 198.3, 339.4, 744.2, and 903.7 m/s, respectively. The inversion result is used to evaluate site classification, determine the maximum shear modulus of soil, provide basis for further seismic hazard analysis and site assessment or site zoning, etc. The result shows that the passive source surface-wave method is feasible in the site engineering seismic survey and can replace boreholes,shorten survey period, and reduce engineering cost to some extent. 展开更多

An enhanced numerical model for simulating two-dimensional incompressible viscous flow with distorted free surface is reported. The numerical simulation is carried out through the CIP (Constrained Interpolation Profile)-based method, which is described in the paper. A more accurate interface capturing scheme, the VOF/WLIC scheme (VOF:Volume-of-Fluid;WLIC:weighed line interface calculation), is adopted as the interface capturing method. To assess the developed algorithm and its versatility, a selection of test problems are examined, i.e. the square wave propagation, the Zalesak’s rigid body rotation, dam breaking problem with and without obstacles, wave sloshing in an excited wave tank and interaction between extreme waves and a floating body. Excellent agreements are obtained when numerical results are compared with available analytical, experimental, and other numerical results. These examples demonstrate that the use of the VOF/WLIC scheme in the free surface capturing makes better results and also the proposed CIP-based model is capable of predicting the freak wave-related phenomena. 展开更多

The principle of surface wave plasma discharge in a rectangular cavity is introduced simply based on surface plasmon polariton theory. The distribution of surface-wave electric field at the interface of the plasma-dielectric slab is investigated by using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method (3D-FDTD) with different slotantenna structures. And the experimental image of discharge with a novel slot antenna array and the simulation of the electric field with this slot antenna array are both displayed. Combined with the distribution of surface wave excitation and experimental results, the numerical simulation performed by using 3D-FDTD is shown to be a useful tool in the computer-aided antenna design for large area planar-type surface-wave plasma sources. 展开更多

A self-consistent and three-dimensional (3D) model of argon discharge in a large-scale rectangular surface-wave plasma (SWP) source is presented in this paper, which is based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) approximation to Maxwell's equations self-consistently coupled with a fluid model for plasma evolution. The discharge characteristics at an input microwave power of 1200 W and a filling gas pressure of 50 Pa in the SWP source are analyzed. The simulation shows the time evolution of deposited power density at different stages, and the 3D distributions of electron density and temperature in the chamber at steady state. In addition, the results show that there is a peak of plasma density approximately at a vertical distance of 3 cm from the quartz window. 展开更多

This paper shows the presence of noises and technique to reduce these noises during the surface wave analysis. The frequency-dependent properties of Rayleigh-type surface waves can be used for imaging and characterizing the shallow subsurface. Interference by coherent source-generated noise inhibits the reliability of shear-wave velocities determined through inversion of the phase velocities of Rayleigh waves. Among these interferences by non-planar, non-fundamental mode Rayleigh waves (noise) are body waves, scattered and non-source-generated surface waves, and highermode surface waves. For the reduction of noise, the filtering technique is implemented in this paper for the multichannel analysis of surface wave method (MASW). With the de-noising technique during the MASW method, more robust and reliable outcome is achieved. The significance of this paper is to obtain pre-awareness about noises during surface wave analysis and take better outcomes with denoising performance in near surface soil investigations. 展开更多

The model of a "spring-mass" resonator periodically attached to a piezoelectric/elastic phononic crystal(PC) nanobeam with surface effects is proposed, and the corresponding calculation method of the band structures is formulized and displayed by introducing the Euler beam theory and the surface piezoelectricity theory to the plane wave expansion(PWE) method. In order to reveal the unique wave propagation characteristics of such a model, the band structures of locally resonant(LR) elastic PC Euler nanobeams with and without resonators, the band structures of LR piezoelectric PC Euler nanobeams with and without resonators, as well as the band structures of LR elastic/piezoelectric PC Euler nanobeams with resonators attached on PZT-4, with resonators attached on epoxy, and without resonators are compared. The results demonstrate that adding resonators indeed plays an active role in opening and widening band gaps. Moreover, the influence rules of different parameters on the band gaps of LR elastic/piezoelectric PC Euler nanobeams with resonators attached on epoxy are discussed, which will play an active role in the further realization of active control of wave propagations. 展开更多

In conventional marine seismic exploration data processing,the sea surface is usually treated as a horizontal free boundary.However,the sea surface is affected by wind and waves and there often exists dynamic small-range fluctuations.These dynamic fluctuations will change the energy propagation path and affect the final imaging results.In theoretical research,different sea surface conditions need to be described,so it is necessary to study the modeling method of dynamic undulating sea surface.Starting from the commonly used sea surface mathematical simulation methods,this paper mainly studies the realization process of simple harmonic wave and Gerstner wave sea surface simulation methods based on ocean wave spectrum,and compares their advantages and disadvantages.Aiming at the shortcomings of the simple harmonic method and Gerstner method in calculational speed and sea surface simulation effect,a method based on wave equation and using dynamic boundary conditions for sea surface simulation is proposed.The calculational speed of this method is much faster than the commonly used simple harmonic method and Gerstner wave method.In addition,this paper also compares the new method with the more commonly used higher-order spectral methods to show the characteristics of the improved wave equation method. 展开更多

Two problems of scattering of surface water waves involving a semi-infinite elastic plate and a pair of semi-infinite elastic plates,separated by a gap of finite width,floating horizontally on water of finite depth,are investigated in the present work for a two-dimensional time-harmonic case.Within the frame of linear water wave theory,the solutions of the two boundary value problems under consideration have been represented in the forms of eigenfunction expansions.Approximate values of the reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained by solving an over-determined system of linear algebraic equations in each problem.In both the problems,the method of least squares as well as the singular value decomposition have been employed and tables of numerical values of the reflection and transmission coefficients are presented for specific choices of the parameters for modelling the elastic plates.Our main aim is to check the energy balance relation in each problem which plays a very important role in the present approach of solutions of mixed boundary value problems involving Laplace equations.The main advantage of the present approach of solutions is that the results for the values of reflection and transmission coefficients obtained by using both the methods are found to satisfy the energy-balance relations associated with the respective scattering problems under consideration.The absolute values of the reflection and transmission coefficients are presented graphically against different values of the wave numbers. 展开更多

A three-dimensional model of a surface-wave plasma (SWP) source is built numerically using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to investigate the structure of the surface wave propagation along the plasma-dielectric interface and the distributions of electromagnetic fields in the whole system. A good-performance excitation source technique for the waveguide which is pivotal to the simulation is presented. The technique can avoid the dc distortions of magnetic fields caused by the forcing electric wall. An example of simulation is given to confirm the existence of the surface waves. The simulation also shows that the code developed is a useful tool in the computer-aided design of the antenna of the SWP source. 展开更多

The major concern of this work is to propose new prototypes of surface hybrid waves, in particular waves propagating without sprawl or deformation on the surface of a fluid. The model considered for this purpose is the modified KdV (Korteweg-de Vries) equation. A peculiarity of the obtained solutions is that they form packages constituted by combinations of waves belonging to the two main families of well-known bright and dark solitary waves. This putting together creates competitions between the different components of the considered packages which, following the values assigned to the parameters of the considered system and in relation to those of the wave parameters, generate hybrid or multi-form structures. The direct method of resolution which made possible the obtained results is that of Bogning-Djeumen Tchaho-Kofane extended to the new implicit Bogning functions. The existence conditions of some solutions are obtained. The numerical simulations carried out with a view to testing the observable and applicable characters of the obtained solutions revealed their stabilities over a relatively long time, and at the same time, confirmed the recommended theoretical forecasts. We are convinced that the solutions proposed as part of this work will make it possible to detect, understand and explain some physical phenomena linked to fluid molecular interactions, former or new, which constantly occur on the fluid surfaces, mainly at the shallow water surface. 展开更多

In conventional fi nite diff erence numerical simulation of seismic waves,regular grids in Cartesian coordinates are used to divide the calculated region.When simulating seismic wave fi elds under an irregular surface,such grids are unsuitable to realize the free boundary condition.They also easily generate false scattered waves at the corners of the grids owing to the approximation of the stepped grids.These issues affect the simulation accuracy.This study introduces an orthogonal body-fitted grid generation technique in computational fl uid dynamics for generating grids in transversely isotropic(TI)media under an irregular surface.The fi rst-order velocity-stress equation in curvilinear coordinates is calculated using the optimized nonstaggered grids finite difference method.The point oscillation generated by the nonstaggered grids difference is eliminated by selective filtering.The orthogonal body-fitted grids can accurately describe the irregular surface.Further,the orthogonality of the grids allows the implementation of free boundary conditions without complicated coordinate transformation and interpolation operations.Numerical examples show that the numerical solutions obtained by this method agree well with the analytical solutions.By comparing the simulation results of the proposed method with those of the regular grid difference method,the proposed method can eff ectively eliminate the false scattered waves caused by the stepped grids under the condition of the same grid spacing.Thus,the accuracy of the numerical simulation is improved.In addition,the simulation results of the three-layer TI media model on an irregular surface show that the proposed method is also suitable for complex models. 展开更多

Propagation characteristics of surface acoustic waves(SAWs) in ZnO films/glass substrates are theoretically investigated by the three-dimensional(3D) finite element method. At first, for(11ˉ20) ZnO films/glass substrates, the simulation results confirm that the Rayleigh waves along the [0001] direction and Love waves along the [1ˉ100] direction are successfully excited in the multilayered structures. Next, the crystal orientations of the ZnO films are rotated, and the influences of ZnO films with different crystal orientations on SAW characterizations, including the phase velocity, electromechanical coupling coefficient, and temperature coefficient of frequency, are investigated. The results show that at appropriate h/λ, Rayleigh wave has a maximum k^2 of 2.4% in(90°, 56.5°, 0°) ZnO film/glass substrate structure; Love wave has a maximum k^2 of 3.81% in(56°, 90°, 0°) ZnO film/glass substrate structure. Meantime, for Rayleigh wave and Love wave devices, zero temperature coefficient of frequency(TCF) can be achieved at appropriate ratio of film thickness to SAW wavelength. These results show that SAW devices with higher k^2 or lower TCF can be fabricated by flexibly selecting the crystal orientations of ZnO films on glass substrates. 展开更多

The foundation of the ultrasonic non-destructive determination of stresses in near-the-surface layers of solids is presented. The method is based on the regularities of Rayleigh wave propagation in solids with initial (residual) stresses. A description of the above mentioned method and examples of stress determination are presented. A doublet integral equation is formulated for the two-dimensional dissipative potential flow around a hydrofoil submerged below a free-water surface. The free-water surface is assumed to involve energy dissipation, and thus it is the source of damping. A doublet panel method is developed from incorporation of the dissipative Green function approach and the doublet distributions on the hydrofoil surface. Numerical computations are implemented, and the derived numerical results are in good agreement with analytic solutions and experimental measurements. 展开更多
