This research is a corpus-based study on the usage patterns of linking adverbials(LA)by Chinese EFL learners at different proficiency levels,thus shedding light on problems facing students and analyzing underlying causes based on second language acquisition theories.Results show that Chinese high school students show a lack of richness in using LA,while Chinese undergraduates tend to overuse LA in an attempt to reach a superficial coherence.And in general,Chinese EFL learners have problems of overusing listing LA and underusing contrastive LA compared with their English native counterparts. 展开更多

Temporal adverbial clause is an important language structure and exhibits different features in English and Chinese,which brings about difficulties for Chinese EFL learners.Based on the theory of Dependency Grammar,the study attempts to investigate the ordering distribution of temporal adverbial clauses by Chinese EFL learners at the beginning,intermediate and advanced levels.The results show that:1)Chinese EFL learners at different proficiencies tend to precede temporal adverbial clause to main clause.With the increase of proficiency,the postposition of temporal adverbial clauses by learners increases and is approaching to the ordering preference of target language.2)The ordering distribution of subordinators for temporal adverbial clauses by Chinese EFL learners is consistent with native English,showing a tendency of 100%preposition,which ascribes to the high frequency and salience of subordinators in English.3)MDD is one of the significant motivations that cause the preference of prepositional temporal adverbial clauses by Chinese EFL learners.As a kind of natural language,interlanguage has a unique cognitive mechanism which distinguishes from both native and target language.This study provides a more comprehensive theoretical reference for learners at different proficiencies to understand and learn temporal adverbial clauses,as well as data support from empirical research for language teaching. 展开更多

For it is so important that a lot of scholars have made and are making a series of studies to their functions. On the basis of corpus-based study, this paper firstly makes a comparison to the usage of adverbial connectors in their writings of the native students and non-native students and then exposes a distinctive gap between these two types of writings in usage of adverbial connectors. In order to help Chinese second-language learners acquire English as well as English native speakers do, this study deeply digs this gap and in further provides several pedagogical suggestions for English teachers and second-language learners. 展开更多

A corpus-based study on differences in positions of adverbial clauses between translational and original English

As widely used in natural language,adverbial clauses can convey various semantic meanings with their flexible position.This study chooses the Corpus of Translational English(COTE)and the Freiburg-LOB Corpus of British English(FLOB)as the research corpora to examine the distribution of adverbial clauses of time,place,reason,condition,and concession in COTE and FLOB across different text categories.Results indicate that although adverbial clauses are mainly placed after the main clause in both translational and original English,translational English shows a lower tendency to put adverbial clauses after the main clauses.A few variations in the position of adverbial clauses are observed based on the subordinating conjunctions and the text categories.This research further discusses the factors influencing the position of adverbial clauses,mainly focusing on iconicity of time,iconicity of space,and Mean Dependency Distance(MDD).The findings show that all three factors can be regarded as significant factors,which can be explained by conceptual order,implicit meaning,and working memory load,and also proposed other potential factors. 展开更多

This paper reports a corpus-based study on the use of adverbial connectors by Chinese non-English major EFL learners with different English proficiency levels. Research results show that there is a significant correlation between the learners' use of adverbial connectors and their writing quality. The Chinese learners with higher linguistic proficiency use more tokens and types of adverbial connectors and perform better in the use of adverbial connectors in terms of stylistic awareness in their writings than those with lower linguistic proficiency. 展开更多

Based on more comparable corpora, the present study verified some of the previous findings about the use of adverbial connectors by Chinese learners. Also some new insights have been gained: 1) the overuse of resultive and listing adverbial connectors implies that the learners adopt different ways of argumentation from the native speakers; 2) the use of adverbial connectors is relevant to the learners' proficiency;3) the command of a small variety of adverbial connectors is possibly one of the causes for the overuse of the high frequency ones. Comparisons with learners of other L1 backgrounds indicate that the following two features are common to EFL learners: 1) they tend to rely heavily on the top ten adverbial connectors for linking purposes; 2) the overuse and underuse reflect a general stylistic uncertainty about the use of adverbial connectors by the EFL learners. 展开更多

The present paper carries a corpus-based study on the use of adverbial conjuncts in order to reveal the difference between Chinese EFL learners and native speakers. It is based on two corpora of CLEC and LOB. According to the data-driven analysis, the research shows that Chinese EFL learners tend to overuse listing conjuncts while underuse other categories. This may result from the limitation of writing topics and the lack of cohesion in their writings. Besides, the incomplete understanding of adverbial conjuncts may cause the avoiding of certain conjuncts and thus turning to the easier listing conjuncts for help. 展开更多

研究基于量子语言学转向视域,以双层词类范畴化理论为指导,以“适当,恰当,妥当,得当”四个词频递减的近义形容词为研究对象,全面考察其语料库使用模式,发现:词频最高的“适当”无标记状语用法已经规约化,词频较高的“恰当”有标记“地... 研究基于量子语言学转向视域,以双层词类范畴化理论为指导,以“适当,恰当,妥当,得当”四个词频递减的近义形容词为研究对象,全面考察其语料库使用模式,发现:词频最高的“适当”无标记状语用法已经规约化,词频较高的“恰当”有标记“地”状语用法比例较高,词频较低的“妥当,得当”状语用法(无论有无标记)均未达到规约化标准。研究表明,汉语形容词是否具备规约化的状语用法同词频呈现正相关,换言之,在社群语言层面上,汉语形容词并不是都可以做状语,更不必说可以无标记作状语。因而证实了汉语形副兼类词存在的合理性和客观性。继而探究了汉语界坚持否认形副兼类词背后的成因。为了走出汉语词类研究的困境,未来汉语词类乃至于语言研究要主动摆脱牛顿经典科学思维的桎梏,积极拥抱量子语言思维,广泛开展实证研究。 展开更多

以往的研究认为“常常”和“往往”为频率或概率副词,且“往往”在使用中有更多限制。本文参考广义量化词理论,认为“常常”和“往往”的语义区别类似于英语中many和most的语义区别,前者既可以表示绝对的多,也可以表示相对的多,而后者... 以往的研究认为“常常”和“往往”为频率或概率副词,且“往往”在使用中有更多限制。本文参考广义量化词理论,认为“常常”和“往往”的语义区别类似于英语中many和most的语义区别,前者既可以表示绝对的多,也可以表示相对的多,而后者只能表示相对的多。只有当“常常”表示相对多的时候,才有可能和“往往”互换。由于“常常”要求约束情景变量,当“往往”只约束个体变量时,它就不能和“往往”互换。“往往”及可以跟其互换的“常常”的量化具有焦点敏感性,并且遵循潘海华(2006)首先提出的,张蕾、潘海华(2021)进一步修改的两条映射规则,即关联对象映射规则和“背景-焦点”映射规则。 展开更多

概称特征的核查是中动结构产生副词效应的关键原因。通过语料对比和运用语段理论分析发现:概称特征在中心语T上;T需核查可识解特征iF[IMPERF]才能移交语义接口解读中动结构的概称意义,但是英语的中动结构T的特征未赋值,因此需要语段中... 概称特征的核查是中动结构产生副词效应的关键原因。通过语料对比和运用语段理论分析发现:概称特征在中心语T上;T需核查可识解特征iF[IMPERF]才能移交语义接口解读中动结构的概称意义,但是英语的中动结构T的特征未赋值,因此需要语段中的目标——副词修饰语为其赋值后才能完成核查;此外,情态动词、否定、焦点等成分的相关可识解特征在进入句法时是已赋值状态,无需副词修饰语的赋值。因此,特征核查分析为中动结构的副词效应、副词修饰语与情态动词之间的补偿关系作出了句法层面的分析,抛弃纯粹的语义表征,符合最简方案的研究精神。 展开更多

从学习者真实语料中提取计量指标的方法,是一种数据驱动的中介语研究方法。基于依存句法理论,本文构建汉语中介语、英语母语和汉语目标语依存句法树库并提取计量指标,旨在考察汉语中介语依存树库中时间状语从句的句法特征。研究有以下... 从学习者真实语料中提取计量指标的方法,是一种数据驱动的中介语研究方法。基于依存句法理论,本文构建汉语中介语、英语母语和汉语目标语依存句法树库并提取计量指标,旨在考察汉语中介语依存树库中时间状语从句的句法特征。研究有以下几点发现:一是汉语中介语的时间状语从句未达到目标语的句法复杂度水平,存在僵化现象,可能受到依存距离最小化压力的影响;二是汉语中介语时间状语从句的语序分布和目标语趋于一致,与目标语的结构凸显和概率分布有关;三是汉语中介语时间状语从句前置时,其主要依存关系的平均依存距离显著小于后置时,工作记忆和认知压力的约束是汉语中介语时间状语从句语序分布的主要动因。数据驱动的中介语研究方法有助于我们更科学、更真实地探索中介语的句法特征,认识中介语的结构规律,为国际中文教育教学实践提供数据参考和实证支持。 展开更多

“不妨”的副词化历程及其动因与机制

文本在历时语言学视野下,系统考察了现代汉语副词“不妨”的副词化历程。研究指出,“不妨”源于唐代,由否定副词“不”与动词“妨”构成的跨层结构经词汇化演变而来。其副词化的动因是多维度的:语音上受汉语双音化韵律驱动;句法上因后... 文本在历时语言学视野下,系统考察了现代汉语副词“不妨”的副词化历程。研究指出,“不妨”源于唐代,由否定副词“不”与动词“妨”构成的跨层结构经词汇化演变而来。其副词化的动因是多维度的:语音上受汉语双音化韵律驱动;句法上因后接VP且常处状语位置而获得副词功能;语义上随着后接成分由已然事实扩展至积极未然事件,其意义从客观的“不妨碍”虚化为表言者主观态度的“可以”;语用上则在未然语境中高频使用,吸收了“建议”义,并进一步主观化。文章论证,“不妨”成词的机制主要是重新分析与语境吸收。副词“不妨”一直沿用到了现代汉语。 展开更多
