Adsorption experiment of water-soluble rare earth elements in atmospheric depositions and implications for source tracing in South China

The distribution patterns of rare earth elements(REEs)in fine-grained materials in various depositions were often found to be similar to those of the aeolian sediments deposited in the Loess Plateau in North China and the fine-grained materials were suggested to be derived from wind-blown dust.However,increasing evidence indicated that the REEs in the water-soluble portion of atmospheric depositions also displayed similar patterns to those of aeolian sediments.In this study,water-soluble REEs in three atmospheric depositions collected from different climatic zones in China were adsorbed with two adsorbents with distinct adsorption capacity,glass powder,and co-precipitated iron hydroxide.The results showed that the REEs adsorbed by the two adsorbents displayed patterns similar to those of the original atmospheric depositions.The typical characteristics of the REE patterns of atmospheric deposition can be well reproduced in the adsorbed REEs.The higher the REE concentrations in the atmospheric depositions,or the higher adsorption efficiency of the adsorbents,the better reproducibility of the REEs patterns.The results suggest that the REEs of the fine-grained materials in various sediments,which have a high adsorption capacity,especially those deposited in South China,may come from the water-soluble REEs in atmospheric deposition,and may not be appropriate tracers of wind-blown dust from North China. 展开更多

Negative absorption of an inverse V type which risesfirst and then drops is often observed in the adsorption test of low adsorption samples.In view of this,a gravimetric isotherm rig with a large sample size was introduced.Its testing principles and operation processes were analyzed based on the previous research results.Then,the volumetric method,magnetic-levitation gravimetric method and large sample size gravimetric method were compared in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.Accordingly,this gravimetric isotherm rig with a large sample size was adopted to perform isotherm adsorption experiments on the low-rank coal samples taken from Well Jimei 2 in the Jiergalangtu sag,Erlian Basin,Inner Mongolia,and shale samples from the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Fm in the southern Sichuan Basin,so as to explore the essential reason for the“negative adsorption”after the effect of a systematical cumulative error is eliminated.And the following research results were obtained.First,when the large sample size gravimetric method is adopted,the phenomenon of“negative adsorption”doesn't occur and the test results of low-rank coal and shale samples are reliable with a highfitting degree(R2>0.99).Second,an electronic sensor error(e.g.electronic balance and P&T sensors),a system cumulative error and an adsorbed phase density error are not the factors leading to the reversal of negative adsorption curves.Third,the void volume error of a sample cell is the essential reason for the negative adsorption.In conclusion,the test accuracy can be improved by introducing the volume correction factor into the isotherm adsorption interpretation algorithm. 展开更多

The surface adsorption of gas molecules is a key factor limiting the secondary electron yield(SEY)of a material in many areas of applied physics.The influence of O_(2)adsorption on the SEY of metallic Ag is investigated in this work.To account for the particle distribution,we propose a BET theory based on multilayer O_(2)physisorption model.Furthermore,based on the phenomenological model of secondary electron(SE)emission and by taking into account the different scattering processes between electrons and particles in the adsorbed layer,we develop a numerical model of SEY in the adsorbed state using Monte Carlo simulations.The relationships among O_(2)adsorption,adsorption layer thickness,and SEY variation characteristics are then examined through a series of experiments.After 12-h exposure to O_(2),the clean samples increases12%-19%of the maximum value of SEY and 2.3 nm in thickness of the adsorbed layer.Experimental results are also compared with the results from the MC model to determine whether the model is accurate. 展开更多

Synergistic effects of potassium-silicon-calcium mineral fertilizer combined with rice husk biochar on the immobilization of Cd and Pb in soil

The combined application of mineral fertilizer and biochar significantly improves the passivation of heavy metal-contaminated soil,surpassing the effects of individual application.This study has reinforced the validation of their passivation competence as soil remediation agents by examining the multifaceted role of potassium-silicon-calcium mineral fertilizer combined with rice husk-based biochar generated at different pyrolysis temperatures.The soil leaching column experiment,conducted based on the adsorption experiments,has facilitated our scrutiny of the passivation impacts of cadmium(Cd)and lead(Pb)when introducing different proportions of mineral fertilizers and biochar into the soil.These results indicate that biochar’s adsorption efficiency for Cd and Pb is significantly improved at escalated pyrolytic temperature conditions in a single solution.The biochar generated at 700℃(C700)renders adsorption effectiveness of approximately 84.24%for Cd and 99.74%for Pb.Biochar conspicuously registers superior adsorption efficiency towards Pb relative to Cd.The mineral fertilizer,which achieves an adsorption efficiency of 97.76%for Cd,is identified as the main adsorbent for Cd,although its competence is slightly lower compared to C700 for Pb adsorption.Within a complex solution,biochar and mineral fertilizer show reduced Cd and Pb adsorption levels compared to single solutions.There is a keen competition for adsorption surfaces witnessed between Cd and Pb,with Pb’s distribution coefficient(Kd)notably outpacing that of Cd.The isothermal adsorption analyses depict that the mineral fertilizer follows the Langmuir model for Cd adsorption,while C700 conveys the Freundlich model for Pb adsorption.The soil leaching column experiment’s results signify that the composite passivation agents significantly outperform the individual passivation agents in efficiency.The combined application of biochar and mineral fertilizer minimizes the cumulative leaching of Cd and Pb,with the optimal soil remedy proportion for heavy metal contamination being 7∶3.In practical application,mindful consideration should be accorded to the deployment ratios of different passivation agents. 展开更多

According to the deficiency of experiment system for gas adsorption and desorption in coal mass, a large scale experiment system is developed independently by researchers. This experiment system is composed of primary and auxiliary boxes, power transmission system, mining system, loading system, gas charging system, data monitoring and intelligent acquisition system. The maximum experiment coal consumption is 1200 kg, the mining system is developed to conduct experiment for gas desorption under excavating disturbance, and the plane-charging cribriform ventilation device is developed to realize uniform ventilation for experiment coal sample, which is accord with the actual gas source situation of coal bed. The desorption characteristics of gas in coal are experimentally studied under the conditions of nature and mining using the experiment system. The results show that, compare with nature condition, the permeability of coal and the velocity of gas desorption could significantly increase under the influence of coal pressure relief and destruction caused by mining, and the degree of gas desorption could somewhat increase too. Finally, pressure relief gas extraction of current seam and adjacent seams after mining in a certain coal mine of Yangquan mining area are introduced, and the gas desorption experiment results is verified by analyzing the effect of gas extraction. 展开更多
