The geometries of the reactants and product of the reaction C2H4O+NH2-→NH2CH2CH2O- are optimized by a variable metric method proposed by Murtagh-Sargent, which makes use of the energy gradient technique based on the ab initio MO method with STO-2G basis set. The attacking reagent NH2-, is assumed to approach one of the carbon atoms of ethylene oxide from the side opposite to the oxygen atom (a transmode attack) according to the experimental evidences of organic chemistry.
