Adaptive reuse in urban centers aims to achieve net-zero energy goals by lowering energy consumption and improving thermal comfort in existing buildings.The combined effects of building expansions on energy performanc...Adaptive reuse in urban centers aims to achieve net-zero energy goals by lowering energy consumption and improving thermal comfort in existing buildings.The combined effects of building expansions on energy performance,and daylighting availability remain unexplored.This paper developed a novel simulation model by applying multi-building data and neural-networks framework to examine the impact of adaptive reuse through variables including number of floors,energy generation,façade glazing,and building expansions in various directions.The developed model was validated by comparing simulated and actual energy use of several buildings,yielding an average error of 7.88%.This error represents the deviation between the simulated and actual energy use intensity values.Energy demand reduced by expansion along the East-West axis was 41%greater than that from expansion in the South direction.This was confirmed by sensitivity analysis,with R values of approximately 0.68 for East and West expansions,and 0.16 for the South.Overall,this study demonstrates that expanding buildings in the East-West direction tends to be the most energy-efficient approach for increasing occupied spaces,with its effectiveness potentially influenced by factors such as site location,building orientation,and climatic conditions.展开更多
Urban underground infrastructures(UUIs)are a vital component of built capital for urban sustainability.However,many cities are now home to a multitude of disused or underutilized UUIs,not least aged purpose-built unde...Urban underground infrastructures(UUIs)are a vital component of built capital for urban sustainability.However,many cities are now home to a multitude of disused or underutilized UUIs,not least aged purpose-built underground facilities,causing a waste of valuable underground space resource assets.In the process of urban renewal,adaptive reuse can be an attractive solution to breathe new life into underutilized UUIs,while addressing some of the modern problems of the built environment by an economically feasible means.Nevertheless,there is a prevalent absence in the current literature of the overarching planning and decision-making approaches for an adaptive reuse development of underutilized UUIs.With the intention of addressing this shortfall,this paper first lays out development strategies,then sets the generic patterns for adaptive reuse of disused or underutilized UUIs.Taking the city of Qingdao,China as a case study,detailed planning and decision-making approaches with the aid of multi-source data and spatial analysis tools are presented.It is anticipated that the findings of this research will assist the adaptive reuse development of UUIs in providing theoretical guidance and empirical evidence,thereby enhancing the role of urban underground space use in contributing to urban revitalization and urban sustainability.展开更多

In considering adaptive reuse,urban developers and planners seek to reach an equilibrium in the battle between time and space. Bothacademically and practically, the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings requires compatible, appropriate, andscientific means for assessing built heritage assets;however, currently, research in this area is still relatively meagre.To address this gap, this paper investigates research frameworks, methodologies, and assessment methods thatconcern the adaptive reuse of architectural heritage. In this paper, we examine the current literature on theparadigms for applying mixed methodologies: the multi-criteria decision model (MCDM) and the preferencemeasurement model (PMM). The progressive deindustrialisation of many western cities since the 1980s has led to many industrial zones linked to port activities being abandoned or falling into disuse.Cities such as Barcelona,Naples,Lisbon,Amste...The progressive deindustrialisation of many western cities since the 1980s has led to many industrial zones linked to port activities being abandoned or falling into disuse.Cities such as Barcelona,Naples,Lisbon,Amsterdam,and Hamburg have port industrial complexes of high tangible and intangible heritage value that could totally or partially disappear,resulting in an irreparable loss of their scientific,architectural,social,technological,and historical values.With that in mind,Adaptive Reuse(AR)of the built heritage allows the industrial memory of the ports to be preserved by turning them into new functional centres within the existing urban structure.That occurs in the context of the contemporary challenges of those cities,such as touristification,the circular economy and climate change,while guaranteeing the life cycle of those buildings.This article analyses two case studies—the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij(NDSM)and the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij(RDM)shipyards,both in the Netherlands—in order to contribute to the knowledge of AR of Port Industrial Heritage.They are two examples of good practices in port industrial heritage interventions,where the factors behind their acclaim can be easily highlighted.A multi-scale methodology is therefore used and tailored to the case of port industrial heritage,based on analysing previous studies of the heritage in different spheres and on different scales.A relationship matrix tool is thus defined.It enables a comparative study to be conducted,using key variables and indicators,and considering qualitative and quantitative data.That provides extensive output information for each case study,which is summarised in the most favourable factors for the success of the AR of this port industrial heritage.展开更多

The idea of heritage is crucial to the critical decision-making process as to how irreplaceable resources are to be utilized by people of the present or conserved for future generations in a fast-changing world. In view of the importance of ＂heritage＂ to the development of a tourist destination, the emphasis on developing appropriate adaptive reuse strategies cannot be overemphasized. In October 1999, the 12th General Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites （ICOMOS） in Mexico stated that in the context of sustainable development, two interrelated issues need urgent attention： cultural tourism and historic cities. The two issues underscore the fact that historic resources are non-renewable, belonging to all of humanity. Without adequate adaptive reuse actions to ensure a sustainable future for these historic resources, this may lead to their complete vanishing. The Gulf rich urban heritage is now being recognized as a valuable resource for future development. This paper focuses on the role of heritage tourism and its implications for urban conservation in the context of old Dubai, UAE. Therefore, in order to use heritage wisely, it will be necessary to position heritage as an essential element of sustainable development, paying particular attention to heritage tourism. In orthogonal frequency division multiple access（OFDMA） relay system,for supporting relay transmission,the base station（BS）-the relay station（RS） link must consume an extra part of resource,which may result in s...In orthogonal frequency division multiple access（OFDMA） relay system,for supporting relay transmission,the base station（BS）-the relay station（RS） link must consume an extra part of resource,which may result in serious resource shortage.In order to improve resource utilization,this paper proposes a dynamic resource allocation scheme in adaptive frequency reused OFDMA-relay system based on adaptive modulation and coding（AMC） technology.In this scheme,relay nodes have two independent antennas and operate in decode-and-forward（DF） and full-duplex mode.Then the BS and RSs share the same subcarriers by spatial multiplexing by two independent antennas.The resource allocation problem is formulated for system downlink throughput maximization.Since the optimal solution couldn＇t be obtained easily,a sub-optimal algorithm is proposed.The adaptive frequency reused algorithm with two independent antennas RS improves the system throughput about 24.3 % compared with the orthogonal frequency allocation with single-antenna model,and increases the system throughput 10.4 % compared with adaptive frequency reused algorithms with single-antenna RS.It is proved that both of the RS with two-antenna model and adaptive frequency reused scheme can improve the system throughput significantly.展开更多

文摘Urban underground infrastructures(UUIs)are a vital component of built capital for urban sustainability.However,many cities are now home to a multitude of disused or underutilized UUIs,not least aged purpose-built underground facilities,causing a waste of valuable underground space resource assets.In the process of urban renewal,adaptive reuse can be an attractive solution to breathe new life into underutilized UUIs,while addressing some of the modern problems of the built environment by an economically feasible means.Nevertheless,there is a prevalent absence in the current literature of the overarching planning and decision-making approaches for an adaptive reuse development of underutilized UUIs.With the intention of addressing this shortfall,this paper first lays out development strategies,then sets the generic patterns for adaptive reuse of disused or underutilized UUIs.Taking the city of Qingdao,China as a case study,detailed planning and decision-making approaches with the aid of multi-source data and spatial analysis tools are presented.It is anticipated that the findings of this research will assist the adaptive reuse development of UUIs in providing theoretical guidance and empirical evidence,thereby enhancing the role of urban underground space use in contributing to urban revitalization and urban sustainability.
文摘This study focuses on the adaptive reuse and placemaking of the Viaduc des Arts,an obsolete viaduct in Paris,and examines its impact on the city’s economic,urban,cultural,and sustainable identities.It aims to showcase unconventional solutions applied to create an elevated linear park and a coherent commercial identity under the vaults while enhancing the district’s imageability and attractiveness.Employing a mixed-methods approach,this study analyzes various action modes in architectural and urban regeneration,highlighting ten valuable lessons learned from the Viaduc des Arts rehabilitation.These lessons provide crucial insights into effective urban regeneration and placemaking strategies,emphasizing the need to update objectives and employ appropriate methodologies for future projects.The Viaduc des Arts serves as a paradigmatic case study,demonstrating the successful transformation of an obsolete viaduct into a commercial,vibrant cultural,and urban space,underscoring the importance of updating urban regeneration objectives.

文摘With the growing trend towards preserving global architectural heritage, the adaptive reuse of built heritagebuildings is becoming increasingly popular;as commentators have noted, this popularity can in part be attributedto the economic, cultural, and social benefits they provide to urban communities. In considering adaptive reuse,urban developers and planners seek to reach an equilibrium in the battle between time and space. Bothacademically and practically, the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings requires compatible, appropriate, andscientific means for assessing built heritage assets;however, currently, research in this area is still relatively meagre.To address this gap, this paper investigates research frameworks, methodologies, and assessment methods thatconcern the adaptive reuse of architectural heritage. In this paper, we examine the current literature on theparadigms for applying mixed methodologies: the multi-criteria decision model (MCDM) and the preferencemeasurement model (PMM). Specifically, in examining the extant literature, we explore the ways in which thesemethods are discussed, compared, and evaluated, and the positive functions of these methods are also highlighted.In addition, this review examines a range of cases to better clarify the research frameworks, methodologies, andassessment methods used in the study of the adaptive reuse of architectural heritage.

文摘The political significance of modernist heritage architecture continues to be an unsolved question,particularly its identification and conservation.In Spain,the chronology of modernism stretches through the whole of the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s dictatorship.The passing of legislation on memory politics in Spain(i.e.the 2007 Law of Historical Memory and the 2022 Law of Democratic Memory)offers a unique opportunity to address this unsolved question by discussing two uncharted heritage debates:namely,the motivations for the heritagisation of modernist architecture in Spain and the challenges in the adaptive reuse of modernist buildings with controversial histories.The former police headquarters in Seville exemplifies the complexities of both debates and to what extent conflicting views about heritage architecture may determine debates about its reuse.Through a documentary review of the heritagisation of Seville’s former police headquarters,a discourse analysis of intervention proposals and press articles and interviews with relevant stakeholders,this study explored how the rise of memory politics in Spain has changed the interpretation of the former police headquarters’significance in the last two decades and influenced the choices for its adaptive reuse.

文摘1.INTRODUCTION In New York City a decline in manufacturing has propelled social and eco-nomic changes that have transformed certain districts[1,2].Unused building stock there has been the basis for adaptive reuse yielding new housing for families of varying compositions.The constant pressure of the need for affordable housing has resulted in the conversion of existing abandoned industrial structures,pro-viding a green,environmentally friendly alternative to new construction[3,4,5].Adaptive reuse provides an opportunity to bring a building up to current codes,to make the layout and building systems more appropriate and efficient,and to help revitalize neighborhoods.

文摘This paper discusses the context,pedagogical approach,and design outcomes of two net-zero energy residential design projects completed by graduate architecture stu-dents as part of a comprehensive design studio course and submitted to the 2018 and 2020 USDOE Race to Zero/Solar Decathlon Design Challenge competition.The competition aims to give students real-word experience designing high-performance buildings by encouraging collaboration,involving community partners,and requir-ing a high degree of technical design development.Working within the competi-tion parameters,two teams at Ball State University worked with outside partners to identify vacant/abandoned homes as a significant problem for rust-belt Indiana com-munities,and then focused their design efforts on high-performance retrofits of two blighted homes in Muncie and Indianapolis.Each project will be described in detail and the implications of the 2018 project on the 2020 project will be addressed.This paper will demonstrate that adaptive reuse projects can be used to engage students in context-specific challenges and to meet stringent high-performance design targets and thresholds.(162)
文摘This study presents a holistic framework for sustainable urban design,using the proposed redevelopment design of Berlin’s Tegel Airport as a case study.The research addresses the need for comprehensive,real-world applications of sustainable urban design principles in the context of climate change and urban challenges.The proposed framework integrates multiple sustainability elements,including adaptive reuse,innovative energy systems,and a’resource community’concept.Key features include mixed-use development,a phased approach,and innovative mobility solutions.The study demonstrates the practical application of urban resilience theory,adaptive reuse concepts,circular economy principles,and compact city theory.Findings reveal the potential for significant environmental benefits,including reduced energy consumption and improved resource efficiency.The framework shows promise in fostering social cohesion through mixed-use spaces and community-centered design.Economic implications include creating local job opportunities and the potential for long-term cost savings through efficient resource management.However,challenges such as initial implementation costs and the need for stakeholder coordination are identified.The study contributes to sustainable urban planning by bridging the theoretical concepts and practical implementation gap.It offers a model for transforming urban brownfields into sustainable communities,providing valuable insights for urban planners,policymakers,and developers.Future research directions include longitudinal studies of implemented projects and comparative analyses across diverse urban contexts.

文摘To increase the convergence rate of the improved normalized subband adaptive filter,a simple but effective method is presented to change the reusing order of coefficient vectors of the adaptive filter. At the beginning of adaptation the algorithmjust uses its current coefficient vector to update the adaptive filter to maintain fast convergence rate,while in steady state it employs several most recent coefficient vectors to update the adaptive filter to reduce misalignment. Simulation results showthat the proposed algorithmcan obtain both fast convergence rate and small steady-state misalignment.
文摘The progressive deindustrialisation of many western cities since the 1980s has led to many industrial zones linked to port activities being abandoned or falling into disuse.Cities such as Barcelona,Naples,Lisbon,Amsterdam,and Hamburg have port industrial complexes of high tangible and intangible heritage value that could totally or partially disappear,resulting in an irreparable loss of their scientific,architectural,social,technological,and historical values.With that in mind,Adaptive Reuse(AR)of the built heritage allows the industrial memory of the ports to be preserved by turning them into new functional centres within the existing urban structure.That occurs in the context of the contemporary challenges of those cities,such as touristification,the circular economy and climate change,while guaranteeing the life cycle of those buildings.This article analyses two case studies—the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij(NDSM)and the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij(RDM)shipyards,both in the Netherlands—in order to contribute to the knowledge of AR of Port Industrial Heritage.They are two examples of good practices in port industrial heritage interventions,where the factors behind their acclaim can be easily highlighted.A multi-scale methodology is therefore used and tailored to the case of port industrial heritage,based on analysing previous studies of the heritage in different spheres and on different scales.A relationship matrix tool is thus defined.It enables a comparative study to be conducted,using key variables and indicators,and considering qualitative and quantitative data.That provides extensive output information for each case study,which is summarised in the most favourable factors for the success of the AR of this port industrial heritage.
文摘Heritage and tourism have become dynamic areas of development in the world during the last two decades. The idea of heritage is crucial to the critical decision-making process as to how irreplaceable resources are to be utilized by people of the present or conserved for future generations in a fast-changing world. In view of the importance of ＂heritage＂ to the development of a tourist destination, the emphasis on developing appropriate adaptive reuse strategies cannot be overemphasized. In October 1999, the 12th General Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites （ICOMOS） in Mexico stated that in the context of sustainable development, two interrelated issues need urgent attention： cultural tourism and historic cities. The two issues underscore the fact that historic resources are non-renewable, belonging to all of humanity. Without adequate adaptive reuse actions to ensure a sustainable future for these historic resources, this may lead to their complete vanishing. The Gulf rich urban heritage is now being recognized as a valuable resource for future development. This paper focuses on the role of heritage tourism and its implications for urban conservation in the context of old Dubai, UAE. Therefore, in order to use heritage wisely, it will be necessary to position heritage as an essential element of sustainable development, paying particular attention to heritage tourism. The question to be raised here is： ＂How can urban heritage be used wisely for tourism without compromising its educational and social roles in enhancing the local cultural identity？＂.
文摘This proposal is intended to be a contribution toward achieving more liveable cities through the revitalization of inner areas based on the restoration and rehabilitation of historic facilities in order to meet current needs. The research starts by posing the following questions. Can we claim, in a general perspective of improvement of the quality of life in towns and cities, that the recovery of abandoned historic buildings could be a key-factor in conservation and innovation policies of the historical heart of towns？ What relationship, if any, is there between the adaptive-reuse design of ancient hospitals and the effects of such action, not only in terms of heritage conservation but also in terms of economic and social regeneration of the surrounding context？ The complexity of this issue is addressed by analyzing related cases, relevant for their design solutions and effects, and proposes answers to the opening questions by correlating the main characters of relevant case studies in Europe.

文摘In orthogonal frequency division multiple access（OFDMA） relay system,for supporting relay transmission,the base station（BS）-the relay station（RS） link must consume an extra part of resource,which may result in serious resource shortage.In order to improve resource utilization,this paper proposes a dynamic resource allocation scheme in adaptive frequency reused OFDMA-relay system based on adaptive modulation and coding（AMC） technology.In this scheme,relay nodes have two independent antennas and operate in decode-and-forward（DF） and full-duplex mode.Then the BS and RSs share the same subcarriers by spatial multiplexing by two independent antennas.The resource allocation problem is formulated for system downlink throughput maximization.Since the optimal solution couldn＇t be obtained easily,a sub-optimal algorithm is proposed.The adaptive frequency reused algorithm with two independent antennas RS improves the system throughput about 24.3 % compared with the orthogonal frequency allocation with single-antenna model,and increases the system throughput 10.4 % compared with adaptive frequency reused algorithms with single-antenna RS.It is proved that both of the RS with two-antenna model and adaptive frequency reused scheme can improve the system throughput significantly.
文摘There has been an increasing level of recognition of the interaction between cultural mega-events and built heritage in recent years.While research has broadly identifed the need to align strategies and visions,as well as involve heritage actors and local communities,there has not been a systematic investigation of the position of industrial heritage within this tableau.This paper examines in depth the European Capital of Culture(ECoC)programme,as it is one of the longest standing Capital of Culture programmes in the world and has a signifcant record of investment and urban transformation.In this paper,we survey and categorise the inclusion of industrial heritage within the ECoC programme in 36 host cities and regions spread across Europe.This research provides the most comprehensive understanding to date of the specifc forms of interaction between industrial heritage and ECoCs to better understand the kinds of relationships that have taken place.We then explore in detail the projects and decisions made in the cases of the 2023 Elefsina,2017 Pafos and 2008 Liverpool ECoCs.
