Establishing and Sustaining Academic and Local Health Collaborations: A Case Study of Practice-Based Teaching and Workforce Development

The pandemic highlighted significant gaps in the public health infrastructure impacted by shortages of public health workers, an undertrained workforce, and years of disinvestment. These gaps required innovative problem-solving by public health agencies (PHAs), including local health departments (LHDs), to respond to rapidly changing community conditions during and after the pandemic. Many schools and programs of public health (SPPH) worked with PHAs to mobilize public health (PH) students through practice-based teaching (PBT). Current research indicates PBT benefits all stakeholders—PHAs, students, faculty, SPPH, and ultimately the community served. However, more research is needed on the utility of PBT in addressing a community’s systemic public health issues, the extent to which the academic-community collaboration enhances a PHA’s capacity, and the impact of the pedagogy on preparing the workforce for an evolving PH landscape. This paper examines the process of a semester-long PBT course, guided by the PBT STEPS framework, which includes five steps from collaboration to implementation to evaluation of a PBT course. The collaborating PHA and its student group addressed community trauma and resilience issues during the semester. Additionally, it examines the longer-term impacts after the semester for the PHA, community, and the workforce by 1) conducting a formative evaluation to understand needs and gaps in the community;2) redesigning an intervention that merged the results of the formative evaluation with the intervention developed during the semester;and 3) securing funding and resources for intervention sustainability. Through the documentation of a post-course partnership between an LHD and faculty at a large school of public health, this case study illustrates the potential for PBT to lay the foundation for ongoing research that supports more impactful interventions for PHAs while bolstering the workforce abilities of students as future practitioners. 展开更多

Analysis of Employee’s Longevity and Academic Development in Forensic Science Laboratory

This paper presents the detailed analysis of academic development index and longevity among forensic science laboratory (FSL) employees as the key factors for improving organizational performance based on human capital development. The data were collected from human resource database involving 171 (88%) employees out of 195. New mathematical formulations were developed for academic development index Ad, a measure of the time delay in academic development while working within FSL, simple longevity (Ls) and complex longevity (Lc), based on years served and academic certificates attained. The values of Ad, Ls and Lc were compared for different units and departments including zonal laboratories between Y2014 and Y2016. Both total and average values of Ls, Lc?and Ad indicated an imbalance in the distribution of staff in different laboratories, necessitating re-allocation to improve performance. The employment trend analysis shows that the work force has been diversified from Y2004 to Y2016 leading to improved management of finance, procurement and human resource in the FSL. As a result of a training program, the percent of staff with MSc has been increasing from about 3.5% in Y2004 to 9% in Y2015. The average values of longevity and academic development index were observed to be the better parameters for comparing laboratories or units than the total values. Results show a balanced staff distribution based on Lc and Ad is inevitable for improved performance. It was concluded that the new indices (Ad and Lc) are important tools for describing the development of the workforce and competitiveness of the FSL. 展开更多

Myopia,a common cause of visual impairment,together with the global decline in physical fitness and increasing prevalence of childhood obesity,has become a prominent global health problem.The beneficial effect of increasing the time of outdoor activities on the incidence of myopia and physical well-being in children has been widely recognized.However,in countries with highly competitive education systems,such as China,parents and school administrators may be reluctant to increase their children's time for extracurricular outdoor activities for fear of affecting their academic performance.Therefore,it is crucial to accurately assess the role of after-school outdoor activities in preventing and controlling myopia,as well as in promoting the physical and mental development of adolescents.Schools and families should be encouraged to collaboratively support children’s engagement in outdoor activities to foster their healthy growth.Given the dual benefits of outdoor activities-improving visual health and promoting overall physical and mental well-being-it is essential to encourage schools and families to work together to support children's engagement in such activities.By doing so,it is hoped that a balanced environment can be created,one that values both academic achievement and healthy development.Policymakers,educators,and parents must recognize the long-term advantages of integrating outdoor activities into children's daily lives,as this approach can help alleviate the burden of myopia,enhance physical fitness,and support emotional and cognitive development.Ultimately,fostering a culture that views outdoor activities as an essential component of education and health will be key to ensuring the well-rounded development of future generations. 展开更多

Despite the increasing enrolment in higher education in sub-Saharan Africa,the systematic understanding of students’academic major satisfaction in these contexts has not received significant research interest.We examined the academic major satisfaction of students in the Nigerian context by the sense of autonomy,competence,and relatedness.Participants were 452 students from Fine and Applied Arts(FAA,n=207,32.9%female,mean age=20.86,SD=3.40)and philosophy(n=245,42.9%female,mean age=21.43,SD=3.38 years)at a large Nigerian public university.They completed the Basic Needs Satisfaction Scale and the Academic Major Satisfaction Scale,as well as a socio-demographic questionnaire.Results following regression analysis and post-hoc t-tests indicated that while FAA students were more satisfied with their major than those in philosophy overall.Philosophy students reported significantly higher relatedness than the FAA students.FAA students did not rate autonomy and competence higher than Philosophy students.Within academic majors,high autonomy was associated with greater academic major satisfaction for only FAA students,whereas FAA and Philosophy students with high competence and relatedness reported increased academic major satisfaction.Findings suggest students self-determine their academic major satisfaction in the Nigerian educational setting by primarily autonomy and competence considerations. 展开更多

The Relationship between Mobile Phone Dependency and Academic Burnout in Middle and High School Students

Background:With the proliferation of smartphones,adolescent mobile phone dependency has intensified,potentially precipitating academic burnout and other adverse outcomes among students.Contemporary study mostly examines college populations,resulting in a lack of exploration on the internal mechanisms connecting mobile phone dependency to academic burnout.In addition to analysing the chain-mediated effects of sleep quality and cognitive flexibility,this study sought to provide theoretical insights for prevention by applying the Conservation of Resources theory to examine the relationship between academic burnout and mobile phone dependency among middle and high school students.Methods:A cluster convenience sampling approach was adopted.Data were collected from 811 middle and high school students in Tianjin,China,using a paper-based questionnaire battery comprising the Mobile Phone Addiction Index,the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index,the Cognitive Flexibility Scale,and the Adolescent Academic Burnout Scale.Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were conducted using SPSS 25.0.Chain mediation effects were examined via the PROCESS macro,with significance assessed using bias-corrected bootstrap 95%confidence intervals.Results:A statistically significant positive link exists between mobile phone dependency and academic burnout among middle and high school students(r=0.575,p<0.001).Dependence on mobile phones had a substantial direct impact on academic burnout(β=0.303,p<0.001).Chain mediation analysis revealed that mobile phone dependency had a substantial direct impact on academic burnout(β=0.303,p<0.001).Sleep quality and cognitive flexibility mediated the link between mobile phone dependency and academic burnout.These indirect pathways represent 44.18%of the total effect.Conclusions:Mobile phone dependency contributes to academic burnout amongmiddle and high school students,mediated sequentially by sleep quality and cognitive flexibility.These findings suggest a potential intervention strategy to mitigate academic burnout by targeting excessive mobile phone use,enhancing sleep hygiene,and implementing cognitive flexibility training. 展开更多

当前,我国义务教育已实现基本均衡,但区域、城乡和校际的教育质量差异依然是实现教育高质量发展的一大挑战。本研究基于山东大学区域教育质量监测数据,选用6622名初中学生纵向追踪数据,结合增值评价模型与多层线性建模方法,探讨学校与班... 当前,我国义务教育已实现基本均衡,但区域、城乡和校际的教育质量差异依然是实现教育高质量发展的一大挑战。本研究基于山东大学区域教育质量监测数据,选用6622名初中学生纵向追踪数据,结合增值评价模型与多层线性建模方法,探讨学校与班级平均学业水平对学生学业自我概念、积极心理资本与学业增值的影响。研究发现:1)在学业水平较低的学校与学业水平一般的班级中,学生自我效能感提升显著,学业水平一般的学校和班级更有利于学生积极心理资本的发展;2)低学业水平学生在低水平环境中学业增值最高,呈现出“小鱼小池”的适应特征;3)中等水平学生在高水平班级中增值更高,表现出“小鱼大池”效应;4)高水平学生整体增值较高,在高和低水平环境中表现出更强的适应能力与增值表现;5)班级对学生心理和学业发展的影响显著强于学校层面。据此建议,在学校层面采用动态分层教学模式,在班级层面重点加强心理环境建设,同时要科学引导家长教育观,以更好实现教育公平与个体适配性发展的统一。 展开更多

逆全球化浪潮的兴起使国际学术人才流动环境日趋复杂,国际流动是否还能促进博士后学术职业发展亟待重新审视。基于2023年Nature全球博士后调查数据,探讨国际流动对博士后学术职业发展的影响,研究发现:第一,国际流动对博士后学术职业发... 逆全球化浪潮的兴起使国际学术人才流动环境日趋复杂,国际流动是否还能促进博士后学术职业发展亟待重新审视。基于2023年Nature全球博士后调查数据,探讨国际流动对博士后学术职业发展的影响,研究发现:第一,国际流动对博士后学术职业发展的影响存在学科差异性,医科领域的负向作用显著而其他学科的影响并不显著;第二,持续流动对博士后学术职业发展构成明显阻碍,正向流动仅在职业发展机会维度存在有限积极效应;第三,随着国际流动次数增加,流动次数对博士后学术职业发展的促进效应逐步减弱;第四,在学术“中心-边缘”格局下,学术中心地区国际流动对博士后学术职业发展的负面效应更显著,而边缘地区的正向流动具有一定的积极作用。鉴于此,研究认为应强化博士后国际流动政策的学科精准性、构建多元的博士后国际化发展战略、建立中心与边缘协同的学术支持网络,并注重博士后职业规划和本土支持。 展开更多

在高校教师职业生涯的中后期,职业高原是一种较为普遍的现象,表现为高校教师在晋升、流动、责任等发展方面呈停滞状态。通过实证研究剖析中后期高校教师职业高原的成因,得以建立“宏观结构-组织制度-社会关系-人力资本”的四维解释框架... 在高校教师职业生涯的中后期,职业高原是一种较为普遍的现象,表现为高校教师在晋升、流动、责任等发展方面呈停滞状态。通过实证研究剖析中后期高校教师职业高原的成因,得以建立“宏观结构-组织制度-社会关系-人力资本”的四维解释框架。宏观结构指向高等教育体制与学术生态的变迁,是文化高原、组织高原形成的主要诱因;组织制度指涉大学、学科、院系的特征,是组织高原、内容高原形成的主要诱因;社会关系对应家庭和学术网络的低支持,是个人高原形成的主要诱因;人力资本指向高校教师专业能力的滞后,是形成内容高原的主要诱因。这些要素揭示中后期高校教师职业发展的结构条件与个体条件差异,形塑职业高原的不同分型。高校不能将职业高原现象简单地视为教师的个体问题,大多数教师的职业高原是制度性的产物。从学校到院系的不同层级应该为中后期教师应对职业高原提供必要的组织支持。 展开更多

当前“准聘-长聘”制度带来的绩效压力能否有效促进青年教师学术能力发展是检验其实施成效的重要依据。为厘清其中的逻辑和机理,对11个省(市)20所高校的25名准聘制青年教师展开深度访谈和扎根分析。研究发现,青年教师的压力认知和应对... 当前“准聘-长聘”制度带来的绩效压力能否有效促进青年教师学术能力发展是检验其实施成效的重要依据。为厘清其中的逻辑和机理,对11个省(市)20所高校的25名准聘制青年教师展开深度访谈和扎根分析。研究发现,青年教师的压力认知和应对策略是关键传导因素,注重挑战机会的教师在成长需求和进取动机驱使下,倾向采用促进重塑策略来争取积极收益,并在此过程中实现学术能力的精进;相反,关注潜在威胁的教师在安全需求和回避动机驱使下,倾向采用防御重塑策略来规避惩罚后果,但这种策略往往忽视和阻碍了学术能力的实质提升。“准聘-长聘”制度效能的发挥需辅以科学考量的绩效规则,罔顾教师承受力和成长规律的高强度施压易引发学术行为异化风险。 展开更多
