Long-term droughts, temperature rise, and extreme weather events cause changes in runoff, evaporation, and transpiration in basins. These changes are more severe in arid and semi-arid regions.Since 2007,the discharge of baseflow of the Zagros Mountain has decreased and made the supply of agricultural, industrial, and drinking water a big challenge. In this investigation, utilizing data from weather stations, the output of CORDEX,and the WetSpass model, the impact of climate change on river discharge in the Great Karun Basin(GKB)was examined. The temperature and precipitation projections for the period 2019-2040 were analyzed using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase Six(CMIP6)under scenarios SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5.The findings reveal that the minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to increase by 0.2℃ to 5.1℃ and 0.1℃ to 3.6℃,respectively.Annual precipitation will decrease between 1.3%and 16.7%in scenario SSP2-4.5 and 23.4%in scenario SSP5-8.5.The results of the WetSpass Model for predicting future scenarios indicate a decrease in direct flow(5%),total discharge(27%),and interception(15%).As evapotranspiration will increase by 15%due to climate change,it will be more difficult to predict the water resources’volume of the Karoun Basin for the next decades.Adapting to climate change is the appropriate solution to solve this problem.Changes in temperature and precipitation in these areas pose major challenges to water resources. 展开更多

The Zagros Basin in southwestern Iran is a significant source of coal, with numerous coal mines operating in the region.Ensuring the stability of coal mines is crucial for safe and efficient mining operations. This study investigates the time-varying response of rocks and roof resistance in coal mines in the Zagros Mountains using a novel approach that combines numerical simulation, relaxation testing, and rock displacement studies. The results show that rocks exhibit significant time-dependent behavior, with changes in rock mechanical properties over time.A comprehensive viscoelastic-plastic model is devel-oped to accurately describe the time-varying strain-softening response of rocks and simulate laboratory tests. The model integrates the Burgers and strain-softening models, simulating stress relaxation curves and rock displacement over time. The study reveals that the rock mass displays significant nonlinear behavior, with changes in rock mechanical properties over time. The findings of this study highlight the importance of considering the time-varying response of rocks and roof resistance in coal mine stability analysis. The results provide valuable insights into the time-dependent behavior of rock mass in coal mines in Iran, which can inform mining practices and mitigate potential hazards. Results in this study can contribute to developing strategies for improving roof stability and reducing the likelihood of roof collapses. 展开更多

Doline susceptibility mapping(DSM)in karst aquifer is important in terms of estimating the vulnerability of the aquifer to pollutants, estimating the infiltration rate, and infrastructures exposed to the development of dolines. In this research, doline susceptibility map was prepared in Saldaran mountain by generalized linear model(GLM)using 14 affecting parameters extracted from satellite images, digital elevation model, and geology map.Only 8 parameters have been inputted to the model which had correlation with dolines. In this regards,306 dolines were identified by the photogrammetric Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAV)method in 600 hectares of Salderan lands and then, these data were divided into the training(70%)and testing(30%)data for modelling. The results of DSM modeling showed that classified probability of doline occurrences in the Saldaran mountain were as follow:16.5%of the area high to very high,72%in the class of low to very low,and 5%in the moderate class. Also, locally,in Saldaran mountain, the Pirghar aquifer has the highest potential for the doline development, followed by Bagh Rostam and Sarab aquifers. Also, the precipitation, digital elevation model,Topographic Position Index, drainage density, slope,TRASP(transformed the circular aspect to a radiation index),Snow-Covered Days and vegetation cover index are of highest importance in the DSM modeling, respectively.Accurate evaluation of the model using the Receiver Operating Characteristics(ROC)curve represents a very good accuracy(AUC=0.953)of the DSM model. 展开更多

The early deformation phase caused the development of a penetrative foliation. The late-stage deformation phase was preferentially accommodated within shear zones and caused the generation of shear bands, implying a non-coaxial component of deformation, the end of this stage deformation was marked by the development of kink-bands. In the vicinity of Zagros suture zone, the kink angle increased from 40° to 60°, and the kink-bands was converted to chevron folds. In this region, the external(α) and internal(β) angular ratio is α/β ≠ 1 and kink angle increased, and deformation occurred with 10% to 30% volume loss. Farther from the suture zone in the east, α/β = 1;and total volume was constant or increased by 5% to 10%. Kink-bands kinematic analysis in the study area revealed this structures were sensitive to deformation conditions and components such that, with decreasing distance to the Zagros suture zone, shearing and rotation increased, a high kinematic vorticity dominated, and volume loss occurred during deformation. 展开更多

Evaluation of active tectonism by means of geomorphic indices has provided crucial semi-quantitative data for evaluating seismic hazards in a fault zone in a semiarid area of the Zagros Mountains of Iran where tectonic rates are low-to-moderate and there are few Quaternary dates. Quaternary activity along the seismically active but poorly understood Sabzpushan fault zone (SFZ) has been investigated. The SFZ consists of two dextral strike-slip faults, the Zafarabad and Kafari faults. Geomorphic indices including mountain front sinuosity, valley asymmetry factor, hypsometric integral, valley floor width to valley height ratio and stream length gradient index were used to assess the effects of active reverse faults which control the topographic relief and Quaternary activity. Geomorphometric and field evidence reveal that the Quaternary activity and topographic relief of the study area are controlled by two reverse faults, the North and South Sabzpushan reverse faults, which have formed a pop-up structure in the contractional step-over area between the Zafarabad and Kafari dextral strikeslip faults as a consequence of oblique convergence between the Afro-Arabian and Iranian plates accommodated by the North and South Sabzpushan thrust faults. 展开更多

The consequence of land-use change from forest to agriculture and other uses has become one of the world’s greatest concerns. The soil, one of the most important components of forests and containing all the required plant nutrients as soluble ions,is highly impacted by these changes.Because vast areas of the Zagros forests in western Iran have changed in use during the last few decades, the present study investigated the effects of landuse changes of forest area to agriculture, orchard, and agroforestry on soil chemical and physical properties.Soil was sampled at four land-use areas:less-disturbed forest areas(control)and agricultural, orchard, and agroforestry areas.Among each of the two forest-use areas(agroforestry and orchard),we selected five trees with similar-sized crowns and sampled under each tree crown at 0-15 and>15-30 cm depths.Five soil samples also were taken in agriculture area at each depth. The findings indicated that during land-use changes, soil sand particles decreased, and clay and silt particles of soil increased, resulting in a fine soil texture. Moreover, the amount of nitrogen(N),phosphorus(P),organic carbon(OC),and electrical conductivity(EC)of soil decreased at both depths due to the decrease in organic matter.Soil pH and magnesium(Mg)level rose during land-use change at both depths except at agricultural sites.Soil potassium(K)content decreased during agricultural use due to the elimination of tree cover. The level of K decreased only at the depth of 0-15 cm because of K dependency on parent materials.Generally, most soil nutrients were affected by plant removal in the conversion.Forest and agricultural soil are distinguishable by their properties, while land-uses such as agroforestry-orchard separated from the others.Soil nutrients were severely affected by the decrease and elimination of tree cover, plowing, and continuous harvesting, resulting in a decline in soil quality and fertility. 展开更多

Topography is the most factor that has the greatest impact of all factor that affect the distribution. To study the diversity of trees and shrub species in the Perc forest situated in Khorramabad, Lorestan, 140 circular plots of 1200 m2 in a grid of 300 m × 250 m were surveyed, using a systematic random sampling method. In each plot, the Margalef richness index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Hill's N1 and Simpson indices and the evenness index of Simpson and Smith-Wilson were calculated and ordered on the basis of different classes of elevation, exposition and slope. The results indicated that slope did not have any significant effect on the indices. Exposition and elevation classes significant impacted the richness and diversity indices, but did not influence evenness. In general, the highest plant diversity was observed for slopes less than 15 %, northern aspects, without geographical direction, and elevations of 2100-2200 m. This information can be very useful in achieving the goals for sustainable management of forests. In addition to greater protection for regions with high diversity and reforestation (compatible species) in degraded area, we can help increase diversity in forests. 展开更多

Kareh Bas is one the transverse fault systems in Zagros fold-thrust belt. Kareh Bas Transcurrent Fault System with a total length of 200 Km is situated about 80 Km east of the Borazjan segment (a part of Kazerun fault zone) and 40 Km west of Shiraz. It is a nearly N-S trending right-lateral linked strike-slip fault system, and several anticlinal axes have been displaced by it. Strike separation (109 Km) of Mountain Front Fault/Flexure (MFF) of Zagros is the most important function of Kareh Bas Transcurrent Fault System. According to fractal analysis (Box-counting method) on space image maps (1:50,000) prepared from Spot data, fault related surface ruptures have non-linear patterns and fault segments have nearly plane form fractal dimensions;specially at north and south terminations. It means that, the north and south terminations of Kareh Bas Transcurrent Fault System are active (earthquake fault segments) and latter case is more active, because it is coinciding on Zagros mountain front faults (MFF). 展开更多

Radiolarites have an important role in the reconstruction of the paleogeography, bathymetry and their coexistence with ophiolites gives an opportunity to determine the tectonic his- tory of collisional zones. The radiolarite units of the southwestern Neyriz are part of the Zagros ac- cretionary prism and positioned beneath the thick bedded carbonate sediments of Tarbur Forma- tion. The existing various structural elements within this unit give a unique fortunate for investiga- tion on the deformation history and studying of the kinematics of the Zagros collision zone. The nu- merous evidence show that this unit has experienced different deformation conditions during ongo- ing evolution, including ductile, brittle-ductile and brittle deformation conditions. The main strike of E-W for axial planes of folds, eastward trend and plunge of fold axes, boudins' neck axes and Type III of the fold interference patterns are indicators of formation and evolution of folds during tran- spressional deformation. Structural evolution of the study area has been affected by an NE-dipping subduction zone of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere below the Iranian microcontinents. These structural elements suggest that high mechanical anisotropy and two successive generations of fold- ing simultaneously with thrusting and extrusion of this unit had led to formation and evolution of this highly asymmetrical folded unit on top of the subducted oceanic crust. 展开更多

Fractal geometry is increasingly becoming a useful tool for modeling and quantifying the complex patterns of natural phenomena. The Earth's topography is one of these phenomena that have fractal characteristics. This paper investigates the relative sensitivity of topography to active tectonics using ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model. The covering divider method was used for direct extraction of surface fractal dimension(D surf) to estimate the roughness-surface of topography with aid of geographic information system(GIS)techniques. This evaluation let us highlight the role of the geomorphic and tectonic processes on the spatial variability of fractal properties of natural landforms.Geomorphic zones can be delineated using fractal dimension mapping in which variability of surface fractal dimension reflects the roughness of the landform surface and is a measure of topography texture. Obtained results showed this method can be a quick and easy way to assess the distribution of land surface deformation in different tectonic settings. The loose alluvial deposits and irregularities derived by tectonic activity have high fractal dimensions whereas the competent formations and higher wavelength folded surfaces have lower fractal dimensions.According to the obtained results, the Kazerun Fault Zone has a crucial role in the separation of the Zagros Mountain Ranges into the different lithological, geomorphological and structural zones. 展开更多

This paper tests a data mining method for evaluation of the "IRTA"(Index of Relative Tectonic Activity) to investigate the impact of active tectonics on geomorphic processes and landscape development. Based upon K-means clustering of six basin-related geomorphic indices(the hypsometric integral, basin asymmetric factor, drainage density, basin shape ratio, mean axial slope of the channel and topographic roughness) that represent the relative strength of active tectonic deformation on topography and morphology, the relative tectonic activity along the Kazerun Fault Zone in the Zagros Mountains of Iran may be classified into low, moderate and high relative tectonic activity zones. The results allow the identification of the clusters of similarly deformed areas related to relative tectonic activity. The utilization of geomorphic parameters as well as IRTA with comparison to the field observations exhibit change in relative tectonic activities mostly corresponding to the change in mechanism of the prominent fault zones in the study area. 展开更多

In order to examine the effect of the Zagros Mountains on precipitation, first, the annual and Seasonal rainfall indices (rain days frequency, rain amount, daily rainfall intensity, and heavy rains) from 43 stations in 1995 - 2004 between the 30° N to 35° N parallels over the mountain range were analyzed. Second, the effect of the Zagros Mountains was studied through the computation of the spatial correlations between the precipitation parameters and the topographic indices (station site elevation, station mean elevation within a radius of 2.5 km, mean elevation of 9 blocks along each of the eight Cartesian directions, and the elevation differences of these 9 blocks from the station mean elevation). The results showed that in the cold season the maximal rainfall occurs on the upper range of west slope, while in warm season it spreads over the study area. The correlations between precipitation and elevation indices were positive on the north of the stations and negative on the south of the stations, that is, the higher elevations of the stations to the north force the uplifting of the moist air masses and increase rainfall at the stations, while the lower elevations to their south lead the movement of the moist air masses to the stations. This is due to the fact that these stations or slopes are exposed to the moist air masses coming from the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf. The heavy rain days and the summer sporadic rain events do not show significant correlations with the topographic indices. The findings indicate that the Zagros Mountains intensify the cold period frontal rains especially over the west slope and block the moist air masses from entering the interior parts of the country. Moreover, these mountains play a secondary role in creating rain days. But they are very important in the production of precipitation in the area. Therefore, their absence will decrease the amount of rainfall to their west and, in return, expand the dry climates of their west and east. 展开更多

In this study, the Maastrichtian-Danian boundary was measured and sampled in two stratigraphic sections, the north and south flanks of the Dehnow anticline in Coastal Fars, Southern Iran. This boundary was also investigated in the drilled exploratory well-1 in the same region. The lithology of the Maastrichtian-Danian deposits consists of glauconitic, phosphatic argillaceous limestones and marlstones. 30 genera and 77 species of planktonic foraminifera have been determined. The recognized biozones are the Gansserina gansseri Interval Zone, and the Contusotruncana contusa Interval Zone, which indicates latest Campanian to middle Maastrichtian age for the upper part of the Gurpi Formation. In addition, the Eoglobigerina edita(P1) Partial Range Zone, Praemurica uncinata(P2) Lowest Occurrence Zone, Morozovella angulata(P3) Lowest Occurrence Zone and Globanomalina psudomenardii(P4) Taxon Range Zone represent a Danian to Thanetian age for the lower part of the Pabdeh Formation. From the absence of the Abathomphalus mayaroensis Interval Zone, Pseudoguembelina hariaensis Interval Zone, Pseudotextularia elegans Interval Zone, Plummerita hantkeninoides Interval Zone, Guembelitria cretacea(P0) Partial Range Zone and Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina(Pα) Total Range Zone, it can be deduced that there is a paraconformity across the Maastrichtian–Danian boundary in the studied area, this hiatus encompassing the late Maastrichtian and the earliest Danian. Danian deposits from the study area contain reworked glauconitized macrofossils, planktonic and benthic foraminifera of the Cretaceous. In the present study, over 3000 m of Upper Cretaceous sediments (Tarbur Formation) in seven stratigraphic, columnar sections were studied. The area is located in the Zagros mountain ranges of southwestern Iran, attributed to the converging continental Arabian Shield, and is interpreted as the result of subduction and collision. Based on foraminiferal studies of the Tarbur Formation in the sections, we have established many new biozones in the stratigraphic sections. However, investigations of the biozones indicate that there is no lithostratigraphic variation between the Upper Cretaceous and Lower Paleocene sediments in some of the studied sections. The concept of widespread formations and lithologic correlations is not applicable in this area, probably as a result of the tectonic unrest at that time. The biostratigraphic boundary between the Cretaceous and the Lower Paleocene is nevertheless well defined by the intraformational boundary in the sections. 展开更多

Alternation of high and low resistance sedimentary beds, active tectonics, large rivers, and slope erosion in valleys consequently resulted in landslide in dammed lakes within the Zagros range. This study presents the results in the analysis of geological and topographic data, satellite imageries, morphotectonics and hydrodynamics of drainage networks about the landslide dammed lakes. There are four landslides in central Zagros(Zagros FoldThrust Belt,ZFTB)which have formed five dammed lakes named,Seymareh,Jaidar,Shur,Shimbar, and Godar.According to the results, damming landslides occurred in the active-tectonic regions on the slopes of anticlines and in valleys with undercutting effects of rivers on their slopes consisting of alternations of loose and resistant beds. The studied landslide dams in narrow valleys are formed as a result of blocking river by sliding debris slopes and rock slides. This study also indicates the formation of Jaidar and Godar in one stage and the presence of Lake Terrace sequence in Seymareh,Shur and Shimbar lakes. The observed sequences of terrace formation in these lakes are caused by four Seymareh Landslides followed by the three-stage excavation of Shur andShimbar lakes. 展开更多

Structures in this area have complications and the study anticline has unique structures in the Fars region. In the study area, the Kuh-e Qazi anticline due to special fold style and rotation toward Northeast is the unique structure between anticlines of the Zagros belt. This anticline is fault bend fold and plunge of the anticline in eastern part rotated toward Northeast along with the Nezamabad fault trend. In this area, the Kuh-e Qazi anticline has asymmetric structures and some faults such as the Nezamabad and the Sarvestan strike slip fault effect on this anticline. The geometry of anticlines in the Zagros fold-thrust belt is affected by the type of deformation and mechanical behavior of stratigraphic units specially detachment units. The purpose of this research is to determine of folding pattern of the Kuh-e Qazi anticline and define structural features affected on them in the study area. This paper presents a part of the results of a regional study of the Fars province in the Zagros Simply Folded Belt, based on original fieldwork, satellite images, structural sections, geological maps and well data. Also, we use some software as Global Mapper and Tectonics FP for preparing some data.?Based on the research, which have been done, the boundary between ductile and frictional substrates causes rotation as a result of lateral, along-strike migration of the ductile substrate. The ductile or viscose layer in the study area is Hormuz Series. Due to lack or thinning of Hormuz salt over the Gavbandi basement high and in the eastern side of the Nezamabad basement fault, causes translation of strain and anticlockwise rotation in Southeast of the Kuh-e Qazi anticline toward Northwest unlike foreland basin due to the Nezamabad fault activity. This style between all of the anticlines in the study area is unique that rotates unlike foreland basin. In addition, influence on anticlockwise rotation, extensional stress has been created and then salt dome cropping out in Southeast of the Kuh-Qazi anticline. One of the best evidence for effect of extensional stress is triangular facets in this part of the study anticline. Based on folding analysis (geometry of axial plane and fold orientation), it is clearly confirmed that the translation of strain and anticlockwise rotation in Southeast of the Kuh-e Qazi anticline toward Northwest has been formed by basement fault activity as the Nezamabad fault in the boundary between ductile and frictional substrates of the study area. 展开更多

This study deals with the comparative investigation on various classification/characterization systems for sedimentary rocks in two parts,40 kmlong of the Zagros tunnel, west of Iran. The results of extensive geotechnical explorations and field measurements were applied to obtain the rock mass classification/characterization systems such as Rock Mass Rating(RMR),Rock Condition Rating(RCR),Q-system(Q),Rock Mass Number(QN),Rock Mass index(RMi),Rock Structure Rating(RSR),and Geological Strength Index(GSI)for a wide range of sedimentary rocks.A set of systems inter-relationship is proposed. Some of these correlation relations such as RMR-Q,RMR-RMi,RMi-Q,RCR,GSI-GSI(Cai)are similar to the one or more relations proposed in the previous studies, however, some of them such as RSR-RMR,RSR-Q,RCR-QN and GSI-RMR are not similar to the previous works.Joint set orientation and joint set number are more important parameters that cause weak correlation coefficients where both side classifications are not similar in considering them in calculating values. So it is proposed to find relations between any pairs of systems that both of them consider or not consider these parameters. The relations are proposed for a wide range of sedimentary rocks and can be applied for similar geological environments. 展开更多

For analyzing the effects of forest litter and slope aspect on soil properties eight soil samples were collected at a depth of 0–10 cm near(i.e.,beneath the crown)and away from(i.e.,not influenced by crown)five Persian turpentine trees each on a north and a south slope at the same elevation in a Zagros forest,Iran. The litter beneath tree crowns and slope exposure were found to have significant interactive effects on C,N,P,K,and electrical conductivity of the soils, however,Ca,Mg and the soil pH were not significantly influenced by these factors. The soil beneath the crowns was enriched in cations compared to more distal positions.Generally,Persian turpentine trees have positive impacts on soil properties in the forest.Degrading or killing these trees by sap extraction, extreme grazing, cutting, fire and expansion of agriculture will lead to significant losses in soil fertility and increases in soil erosion. 展开更多
