As one of the world's major religions,Buddhism carries a profound cultural heritage and significant social influence. One of Buddhism's core teachings is compassion, which is reflected not only in personal practice but also in its societal contributions.According to“Chapter 2:Expedient Means”in Lotus Sutra(法华经),“The Buddhas and the World-honored Ones appear in the world solely for one great cause.”This cause is to introduce, reveal, realize, and lead all beings to enter Buddha's knowledge and insight, ultimately leading them to enlightenment and liberation.Such is the fundamental purpose of the Buddha's manifestation in the world.Mahayana Buddhism is deeply rooted in the ideals of liberating self and others, and universally benefiting all sentient beings with a focus on worldly altruism.Public welfare and charitable activities are essential avenues through which Mahayana Buddhism engages with and benefits the world.Throughout its nearly 2,000 years of history in China,Buddhism has profoundly engaged in societal philanthropic activities. However, after the Song(960–1279)and Ming(1368–1644)dynasties,the decline in Buddhism's influence weakened the social impact of Buddhist philanthropy, contributing significantly to the decline of Buddhist culture.Driven by the modern concept of Humanistic Buddhism(人间佛教),generations of eminent monastics within Chinese Mahayana Buddhism undertook extensive religious reforms, successfully revitalizing the Buddhist traditions. As a result,Chinese Mahayana Buddhism has rediscovered its original mission of worldly engagements, benefiting others, and extending compassion.Education, culture, and philanthropy have even become the“three lifelines”for the revival of Buddhism. As a Buddhist organization based in North America for more than half a century, the Buddhist Association of Canada has been actively inheriting and promoting the principles of modern Humanistic Buddhism.Emphasizing compassion and actively engaging in worldly altruism, the Association has integrated into the charitable traditions of Western society.Following the unique spirit of Buddhist charity,it has explored the concept of“localization”of philanthropy, achieving distinctive results in its Dharma propagation, and accumulating extensive social experience. 展开更多
