The Xigaze ophiolite is located in the middle section of the Yarlung Zangbo River ophiolite belt and includes a well-preserved sequence section of seven ophiolite blocks. The relatively complete ophiolitic sequence sections are represented by Jiding, Dejixiang, Baigang, and Dazhuqu ophiolites and consist of three-four units. The complete ophiolite sequence in order from the bottom to top consists of mantle peridotite, cumulates, sheeted sill dike swarms, and basic lavas±radiolarian chert. These cumulates are absent in the remaining blocks of Dejixiang and Luqu. The age of radiolaria in the radiolarian chert is Late Jurassic-Cretaceous. The basalt and ultramafic rock of the ophiolite also are overlaid by Tertiary Liuqu conglomerate, which contains numerous pebble components of ophiolite, indicating that the Tethys Ocean began to close at the end of Cretaceous Period. The isotopic data of gabbro, diabase, and albite granite in the Xigaze ophiolite are approximately 126-139 Ma, which indicates that the ophiolite formed in the Early Cretaceous. The K-Ar age of amphibole in garnet amphibolite in the ophiolite melange is 81 Ma, indicating that tectonic ophiolite emplacement occurred at the end of Late Cretaceous. Research in petrology, petrological chemistry, mineralogy, and geochemistry of volcanic rocks and dikes of the Xigaze ophiolite indicate the following characteristics: (1) They are mainly composed of basalt, basaltic andesite, dolerite, and diabase and are characterized by high TiO2 (0.7-1.47%), low MgO (mostly less than 8%), and low SiO2 (mostly less than 53%). (2) The volcanic rocks and dikes of the Xigaze ophiolite show light rare earth element (LREE)-depleted rare earth element (REE) patterns. (3) The spider diagrams of the volcanic rocks and dikes of the Xigaze ophiolite exhibit LILE depletion relative to high-field-strength element (HFSE) patterns with left oblique features. (4) No protogenetic olivine and clinoenstatite was detected. (5) Some dikes show low TiO2 and high MgO, in which a few of Cr-enriched spinels and a very few pseudomorphs of olivine, orthopyroxene can be seen. They show more distinctive affinity as boninitic rock and canbe classified to boninite series rock. The previously mentioned features of the volcanic rocks and dikes in the Xigaze ophiolite implies that these ophiolites formed in a mid-ocean ridge (MOR) in the earlier stage and than forearc extension of subduction initiation occurred once at the later stage of the evolution of the Xigaze ophiolite. The forearc extention caused further melting of the residue-depleted mantle, resulting in the formation of melts with lower TiO2 and higher MgO. These melts formed as dikes and intruded into the oceanic crust formed in the earlier stage, resulting in a close association of mid-ocean ridge basalt and the boninite rock of the Xigaze ophiolite. 展开更多

The clinopyroxene amphibolite from the Bailang terrane is located in the central section of the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone(YZSZ),southern Tibet.The study of it is expected to provide important clues for the subduction of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean below the Asian Plate and thus for better understanding of the development of the India-Asia collision zone.Based on integrated textural,mineral compositional,metamorphic reaction history and geothermobarometric studies of the clinopyroxene amphibolite within a serpentinite mélange,four overprinted metamorphic stages are established.They are the first metamorphic record of M1 stage indicated by a relict assemblage of plagioclase+clinopyroxene+amphibole,an early M2 stage characterized by an assemblage of medium-grained clinopyroxene+amphibole+plagioclase+quartz as well as rutile inclusion in titanite,which is formed during burial process,an isobaric cooling M3 stage which is characterized by an assemblage of clinopyroxene+amphibole+plagioclase+titanite,and a decomposing retrograde stage M4,which is represented by the amphibolite+plagioclase symplectite+titanite+rutile+quartz.By applying the THERMOCALC(versions 6.2 and 6.3)technique in the NCFMASHTO system,the P-T conditions estimated from M1 to M4 stages are ca.8.6 kbar/880℃,10.8–13.4 kbar/800–840℃,12.7–13.2 kbar/650–660℃ and<11.2 kbar/640℃,respectively.The mineral assemblages and their P-T conditions define a counterclockwise P-T path for the clinopyroxene amphibolite of the Xigaze ophiolite,suggesting that the rocks underwent a cooling process during burial from magmatic protolith,and a decompressing stage after the pressure peak metamorphic conditions,which implies that the Bailang terrane of the Xigaze ophiolite may have experienced subduction/collision-related tectonic processes.The peak metamorphism reaches to the transitional P-T conditions among amphibolite facies,granulite facies and eclogite facies with a burial depth of 30–40 km.After exhumation of the ophiolitic unit to the shallow crustal levels,the clinopyroxene amphibolite exposes to a high fO2 condition on the basis of the stable epidotebearing assemblage in the T-MO2 diagrams.A late subgreenschist facies overprinting subsequently occurs,the relevant mineral assemblage is prehnite+albite+chlorite+epidote+quartz. 展开更多

The Cretaceous-Eocene Xigaze forearc basin is a crucial data archive for understanding the tectonic history of the Asian continental margin prior to and following collision with India during the early Cenozoic Era. This study reports apatite and zircon(U-Th)/He thermochronologic data from fourteen samples from Albian-Ypresian Xigaze forearc strata to determine the degree and timing of heating(burial) and subsequent cooling(exhumation) of two localities along the Yarlung suture zone(YSZ) near the towns of Saga and Lazi. Thirty-seven individual zircon He ages range from 31.5 ± 0.8 Ma to6.06 ± 0.18 Ma,with the majority of grains yielding ages between 30 Ma and 10 Ma. Twenty apatite He ages range from 12.7 ± 0.5 Ma to 3.9 ± 0.3 Ma,with the majority of grains yielding ages between 9 Ma and 4 Ma. These ages suggest that the Xigaze forearc basin was heated to 140-200 ℃ prior to cooling in Oligocene-Miocene time. Thermal modeling supports this interpretation and shows that the samples were buried to maximum temperatures of ~140-200 0 C by 35-21 Ma, immediately followed by the onset of exhumation. The zircon He and apatite He dataset and thermal modeling results indicate rapid exhumation from ~21 Ma to 15 Ma, and at ~4 Ma. The 21-15 Ma thermochronometric signal appears to be regionally extensive, affecting all the lithotectonic units of the YSZ, and coincides with movement along the north-vergent Great Counter Thrust system. Thrusting, coupled with enhanced erosion possibly related to the paleo-Yarlung River, likely drove Early Miocene cooling of the Xigaze forearc basin.In contrast, the younger phase of rapid exhumation at ~4 Ma was likely driven by enhanced rock uplift in the footwall of north-striking rifts that cross-cut the YSZ. 展开更多

It includes seven different tectonic\|sedimentary units from north to south as follows: Gangdese arc complex keeping the Sangri Group inside, the Qiuwu Formation, the Giabulin Formation, the Xigaze Group, ophiolitic massifs, the Liuqu Group, and melange zones (Wang et al., 1999). Current models, which mainly focus on researches at the unit of ophiolitic massifs, propose that most of the Tethyan oceanic lithosphere was subducted into one single subduction zone active during the Middle Cretaceous or the Late Cretaceous, and closed during the Paleogene India\|Asia collision. In this report, we present latest research results on units in the Xigaze forearc basin and others in YZSZ after 6\|year\|period of comprehensive investigations. Chronostratigraphy framework, sedimentology, and evolution of the Xigaze forearc basin are discussed in details. Four thrust systems in YZSZ are named. Structural and petrological data suggest that the Xigaze ophiolite from the Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone(YZSZ)in south Tibet was a typical slow-spreading ridge.A new field,geochemical,mineral,and U-Pb zircon dataset of plagiogranite intrusions were used to constrain the dynamic processes of oceanic accretion in this slow-spreading ridge.Plagiogranites mainly occur as dykes or intrusions intruded into the whole sequence of the ophiolite and have a similar orientation to the dolerite dykes developed in the late stage of detachment faulting.U-Pb zircon ages of 122–123 Ma were obtained for two types of plagiogranites and associated dolerite dykes.Detailed geochemical and mineralogical examinations suggest that the plagiogranites are the product of low-pressure(2–3 kbar)fractional crystallization of midocean ridge basalt-like magma and unlikely to have been derived from the partial melting of hydrous gabbroic rocks.The complex cross-cut relationship between the plagiogranites and ophiolite sequence reflects that they are controlled by small discontinued melt lenses rather than a big magma chamber under the ridge axis and reveals multiple injections during the oceanic crust accretion.The formation of plagiogranites possibly reflects the complex characteristic of oceanic accretion at slow-spreading ridges,time-dependent on structural(external)and magmatic(internal)processes. 展开更多

The analysis of early stage rodingite from the ultramafic rocks of the Xialu Massif in the Xigaze Ophiolite,Tibet,in China shows that the rodingitization involved continuous changes in fluid composition during different stages of subduction.The early stage prehnite-bearing rodingite was produced at low pressures and temperatures along extensional fractures.Samples of rodingite were collected along a profile from the center to the margin of a rodingitized intrusive igneous rock(^10 m×30 m),and they record wide variations in bulk composition,mineralogy,and texture.The mineral assemblages,from center to margin,vary from(1)relics of primary clinopyroxene(Cpx_(r))and primary amphibole(Amp_(r))+newly formed late amphibole(Act)+primary plagioclase(Pl_(r))+clinozoisite+prehnite+albite+chlorite+titanite+ilmenite(R1 rodingite),through(2)relics of primary clinopyroxene(Cpx_(r))+newly formed late clinopyroxene(Cpx_(n))+primary and late amphiboles(Amp_(r)+Act)+clinozoisite+prehnite+albite+chlorite+titanite(R2 rodingite),to(3)newly formed late clinopyroxene(Cpx_(n))and amphibole(Act)+clinozoisite+prehnite+albite+chlorite+titanite(R3 rodingite).As a result of the metasomatic process of rodingitization,the content of CaO in the whole rock chemical composition from R1 to R3 increases,SiO_(2) decreases,and Na_(2)O+K_(2)O is almost completely removed.Massbalance diagrams show enrichments in large ion lithophile elements such as Rb,Cs,Ba,and Pb as well as Ni during rodingitization.The central part of the rodingitized intrusion(R1 rodingite)was only slightly affected by metasomatism.On the other hand,the contents of the rare earth elements(REEs),high field strength elements(HFSEs;e.g.Zr,Nb,Ta,Hf,and Y),and some highly compatible elements such as Cr and Sc decreased slightly during rodingitization.Thermodynamic modeling based on equilibrium mineral assemblages indicates that the rodingite of the Xialu Massif formed in an H_(2)O-saturated,CO_(2)-rich environment.The estimated conditions of metamorphism were-281-323℃and 0.4-3.9 kbar,representing the subgreenschist facies.In this environment,REEs and HFSEs were soluble in the fluids and partly removed.Moreover,these prehnite rodingites formed in a progressively reducing and less alkaline environment,as indicated by decreases in f(O_(2))and bulk-rock Fe^(3+)/Fe^(2+) ratios,and the records of fluidΔpH from the center to the margin of the studied rodingitized intrusion. 展开更多

The tectonic setting of podiform chromitite formation still remains highly debated. There is a close correlation between tectonic settings and oxygen fugacity(fO2)(e.g., Ballhaus, 1993;Dare et al., 2009;Parkinson and Arculus, 1999). Here we present results of fO2 of chromites determined by M?ssbauer spectroscopy from both the Luobusha and Dazhuqu areas along Yarlung Zangbo suture zone, Southern Tibet. The fO2 values(-1.02~0.04 log units against the FMQ buffer) and Cr#(22~54%) in chromites from lherzolites and harzburgites of both areas are similar to those of abyssal peridotites, indicating that they may be residues after partial melting at spreading centers. However, both dunite envelopes and chromitites from Luobusha have high fO2 values(0.04~2.25 log units) and Cr#(73~84%), showing an affinity to boninitic melts, and thus form in a suprasubduction zone. Dazhuqu dunites show diverse fO2 values(-0.22~2.19 log units) and Cr#(22~82%), indicating that they form in distinct settings. Chromitites and chromite dunites from Dazhuqu have low fO2 values(-0.3~0.71 log units) and Cr#(16~63%), both of which are similar to those of MORB-like basalts, inferring that they form in an extensional setting. Both high-Cr and high-Al chromitites from other typical podiform chromite ore deposits, such as Kempirsai, Oman, and Albania ophiolites, also show high fO2 values(e.g., Chashchukhin and Votyakov, 2009;Melcher et al., 1997;Quintiliani et al., 2006;Rollinson and Adetunji, 2015), while the distribution-limited small chromitites and chromite dunites from Dazhuqu exhibit low fO2 values. The phenomenon infers that the suprasubduction zone is more beneficial to the formation of podiform chromitites. 展开更多

The Early Cretaceous Xigaze ophiolites(XO)exposed along the central segment of the more than 2000 km long Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone in southern Tibet,preserved the structure of the upper mantle and oceanic crust,is interpreted as a definite record of Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere.Many evolution models of the XO have been proposed since the 1980s(Nicolas et al.,1981;Hébert et al.,2012;Maffione et al.,2015).However,the geodynamic environment of the XO whether at a MOR or SSZ remains controversial.As key evidence for the identification of the SSZ ophiolite,the boninite-like dolerites from the XO are still controversial and poorly constraint(Chen et al.,2003;Bao et al.,2013;Dai et al.,2013).According to previous reports,dolerites were subdivided to MORB-like type and boninite-like type(Chen et al.,2003;Dai et al.,2013).Apart from high-SiO2(>52 wt%),high MgO(>8 wt%)and low-TiO2(<0.5 wt%),we found the boninite-like and MORB-like dolerites are indistinguishable in outcrop,mineral and chemical.They are sills invaded into mantle sequence of the XO,with 50.35–56.80 wt%SiO2,0.32–1.19 wt%TiO2,7.39–8.89 wt%Fe2O3T,5.50–10.42 wt%MgO and Mg#of 0.49–0.74.MORB-like dolerites display trace element and REE patterns similar to those of most fore-arc or/and back-arc basalts from Izu-Bonin-Mariana(IBM),i.e.enrichment in large ion lithophile elements(LILEs,e.g.Cs,Rb,Ba,Pb,U)and depletion in high-field strength elements(HFSE,Nb,Ta)(Fig.1).Boninite-like dolerites resemble the MORB-like dolerites in trace elements and REE patterns,excepting for lower concentrations in REE,but distinct from the boninites discovered from the IBM or Troodos ophiolite(Fig.1c,d).Th in both dolerites deviate from the MORB array with negative slopes on the Th/Yb vs.Nb/Yb diagram(Fig.2a),suggesting constant subduction component added to the mantle source(Pearce et al.,1995).We chose depleted MORB source Mantle(DMM,Workman and Hart,2005)as the starting composition computing immobile element contents for primary melts using the methods and partition coefficients of Shervais and Jean(2012).The results show that MORB-like and boninitelike dolerites can be explained by non-batch fractional melting(≥15%)of a depleted spinel peridotite with few subductionderived components(Fig.2b).Therefore,the boninite-like dolerites from the XO cannot be regarded as a product of hydrous melting of hot and highly depleted mantle wedge fluxed by the slab-derived fluid and the XO cannot be used as analogs for the subduction initiation. 展开更多
