In a certain period,some news will compete for the top news to gain the most attention and influence,and more news will be submerged in the ocean of news and become mediocre.This article deeply studies the evolution p...In a certain period,some news will compete for the top news to gain the most attention and influence,and more news will be submerged in the ocean of news and become mediocre.This article deeply studies the evolution process and competition mechanism of the dissemination of Weibo news.In this paper,we innovatively propose a pre-processing scheme for traditional small-world networks and scale-free networks and divide nodes into three roles:fans,passersby,and anti-fans.The competition mechanism of Weibo top news is defined from the aspects of node role and node aggregation degree.A network evolution model is established based on the competition mechanism.The propagation characteristics of the network evolution model are deeply analyzed,and simulation experiments are performed on the small-world network and the scale-free network.Finally,the validity and rationality of the new model are verified through comparative experiments,and a feasible scheme for the propagation of top news on Weibo is given.展开更多
Weibo,also known as micro-blog,with its extremely low threshold of information release and interactive communication mode,has become the primary source and communication form of Internet hotspots.However,characterized...Weibo,also known as micro-blog,with its extremely low threshold of information release and interactive communication mode,has become the primary source and communication form of Internet hotspots.However,characterized as a kind of short text,the sparsity in semantic features,plus its colloquial and diversified expressions makes clustering analysis more difficult.In order to solve the above problems,we use the Biterm topic model(BTM)to extract features from the corpus and use vector space model(VSM)to strengthen the features to reduce the vector dimension and highlight the main features.Then,an improved Weibo feature-incorporated incremental clustering algorithm and the Weibo buzz calculation formula are proposed to describe the buzz of Weibo,and then the discovery of hotspots can be reasonably made.The experimental results show that the incremental clustering algorithm presented in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy of clustering in different dimensions.Meanwhile,the calculation formula of Weibo buzz reasonably describes the evolution process of Weibo buzz from a qualitative point of view,which can help discover the hotspots effectively.展开更多
While incomplete non-medical data has been integrated into prediction models for epidemics,the accuracy and the generalizability of the data are difficult to guarantee.To comprehensively evaluate the ability and appli...While incomplete non-medical data has been integrated into prediction models for epidemics,the accuracy and the generalizability of the data are difficult to guarantee.To comprehensively evaluate the ability and applicability of using social media data to predict the development of COVID-19,a new confirmed case prediction algorithm improving the Google Flu Trends algorithm is established,called Weibo COVID-19 Trends(WCT),based on the post dataset generated by all users in Wuhan on Sina Weibo.A genetic algorithm is designed to select the keyword set for filtering COVID-19 related posts.WCT can constantly outperform the highest average test score in the training set between daily new confirmed case counts and the prediction results.It remains to produce the best prediction results among other algorithms when the number of forecast days increases from one to eight days with the highest correlation score from 0.98(P<0.01)to 0.86(P<0.01)during all analysis period.Additionally,WCT effectively improves the Google Flu Trends algorithm's shortcoming of overestimating the epidemic peak value.This study offers a highly adaptive approach for feature engineering of third-party data in epidemic prediction,providing useful insights for the prediction of newly emerging infectious diseases at an early stage.展开更多

Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like microblogging platform, has achieved a great success in China although studies on it are still in an initial state. This paper aims to explore the relationships among different profile attributes in Sina Weibo. We use the techniques of association rule mining to identify the dependency among the attributes and we found that if a user’s posts are welcomed, he or she is more likely to have a large number of followers. Our results demonstrate how the relationships among the profile attributes are affected by a user’s verified type. We also put some efforts on data transformation and analyze the influence of the statistical properties of the data distribution on data discretization.展开更多

Weibo is the Twitter counterpart in China that has attracted hundreds of millions of users. This paper ana...Weibo is the Twitter counterpart in China that has attracted hundreds of millions of users. We crawled an almost complete Weibo user network that contains 222 million users and 27 billion links in 2013. This paper analyzes the structural properties of this network, and compares it with a Twitter user network. The topological properties we studied include the degree distributions, connected components, distance distributions, reciprocity,clustering coefficient, Page Rank centrality, and degree assortativity. We find that Weibo users have a higher diversity index, higher Gini index, but a lower reciprocity and clustering coefficient for most of the nodes. A surprising observation is that the reciprocity of Weibo is only about a quarter of the reciprocity of the Twitter user network. We also show that Weibo adoption rate correlates with economic development positively, and Weibo network can be used to quantify the connections between provinces and regions in China. In particular, point-wise mutual information is shown to be accurate in quantifying the strength of connections. We developed an interactive analyzing software framework for this study, and released the data and code online.展开更多

From the perspective of its most prominent feature--microness--the authors investigate the dialectical relationship between microness and largeness embodied in its form, the context of its emergence, the conditions of its existence, as well as the issues reflected in its content. Studying three disparate cases of microfiction writing, namely microfiction selected from contests hosted by Sina, Chen Peng's personal Weibo posts, and Wen Huanjian's Weibo novel, Love in the Age of Microblogging (Weibo shiqi de aiqing), we explore the cultural status of microfiction as a reflection of the combination of literary writing and online activities; and its aesthetic, literary, and cultural characteristics. Reading microfiction in both a literary and a sociocultural text, we argue that the smallness is an intrusion upon the largeness and hegemony of grand narratives on the one hand, and a reflection of a boradly changing reality on the other.展开更多
