This review aims to identify the assets and limitations of Dabema(Piptadeniastrum africanum)as a sustainable alternative to traditional timber species for furniture and construction applications.Dabema is characterized by its high density and dimensional stability,meeting ASTM(American Society for Testing and Materials)standards for mechanical strength,which is essential for promoting its use.However,its limited availability in trade and ingrained habits of use are obstacles to its widespread commercialization.In addition,thermal and oleothermal treatments have shown great potential for improving the characteristics of this wood,although they require ongoing optimization and rigorous environmental assessment.Consequently,increased awareness of the benefits of Dabema is decisive to encourage its sustainable adoption in modern economies.This could help to diversify forest resources and encourage more sustainable building practices,taking advantage of Dabema’s unique properties while mitigating environmental sustainability concerns. 展开更多

In South Saharan countries, 85% of the population uses biomass as a primary energy source. Cameroon presents one of the highest biomass energy and sawmills produce important sawdust resources which are not used and are burnt in piles leading to significant air toxic emissions. Therefore, we have to valorize industrially these available sawdusts. This study focuses on the physicochemical and thermochemical analysis of Ayous, Sapelli and Tali sawdust. The proximate and ultimate analysis, particle size, structural composition, as well as heavy metal content and calorific value were determined. In addition, the thermogravimetric mass losses were also estimated. The results showed that high water contents (24% - 41%) were recorded in the raw sawdust, and the thermal treatment reduced these contents from 78% to values in the range of 4% - 9%. The values for ash and volatile matter content were respectively between 0.25% - 0.74% and 68% - 76%. The LHV is higher in Ayous (17.5 MJ/kg) and Sapelli (16.8 MJ/kg) than that of Tali (15.7 MJ/kg). The concentration of heavy metals is very low in each species. Extractives are more present in Tali (16.06%) than in the other sawdusts. Pyrolysis of sawdust shows the typical decomposition of hemicellulose (270˚C - 325˚C), cellulose (325˚C - 400˚C) and lignin (200˚C - 550˚C) with a maximum loss of 75% at 370˚C and the melting point is 320˚C. The results of the sawdust parameters determined in the paper can be valorized to reduce pollutants emissions by developing the efficiency and effectiveness of biomass energy processes and promoting the use of biomass as a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. 展开更多

Late Miocene woods were investigated from the Luhe Basin in Chuxiong Borough, central Yunnan, China. The calcified woods preserved in the Shigucun member of the Shihuiba Formation, are represented by fallen logs and stumps. Two species of fossil wood, Taxodioxylon cryptomeripsoides Schonfeld 1953 and T. cunninghamioides Watari 1948, are described. Their anatomical structure shows striking similarities to the woods of Cryptomeria and Cunninghamia respectively. That the two fossil woods are classed in the Taxodiaceae suggest a subtropical, humid, and warm environment in Lithe during Late Miocene. They compare favorably to other fossil specimens and species reported from localities ranging from Cretaceous to Pliocene. This is the first record of the presence of the species T. cryptomeripsoides and T. cunninghamioides in late Miocene of Yunnan. 展开更多

Wood plays a major role in the production of furniture and wooden structures.Nevertheless,in this process,the massive use of adhesives and plural connectors remains a definite problem for health and the environment.Therefore,wood welding is a breakthrough in this respect.This paper reviews the applications of wood welding in furniture and construction and then examines advances in improving the durability of welded wood against water.Our contribution also highlights the need to join African tropical woods using the rotational friction welding technique.According to our results,these woods present interesting chemical singularities,which could provide solutions to the water vulnerability of the welded wood.Moreover,the use of such a joining method would first free the Cameroonian furniture industry from the chemical industry,secondly position it at the forefront of new eco-design trends and thirdly make it competitive with other countries in the Central African sub-region.These works enrich the long and rich bibliography on the technique of wood welding,which has long been conspicuous by its absence of tropical woods. 展开更多

The present article highlights the inconsistency of static Woods Saxon potential and the applicability of energy dependent Woods Saxon potential to explore the fusion dynamics of ^(48)_(22)Ti+^(58,60,64)_(28)Ni,^(46)_(22)Ti+^(64)_(28)Ti+^(50)_(22)Ti+^(60)_(28)Ni,and^(19)_9F+^(93)_(41)Nb reactions leading to formation of different Sn-isotopes via different entrance channels.Theoretical calculations based upon one-dimensional Wong formula obtained by using static Woods Saxon potential unable to provide proper explanation for sub-barrier fusion enhancement of these projectile-target combinations.However,the predictions of onedimensional Wong formula based upon energy dependent Woods Saxon potential model(EDWSP model) accurately describe the observed fusion dynamics of these systems wherein the significantly larger value of diffuseness parameter ranging from a = 0.85 fm to a = 0.97 fm is required to address the experimental data in whole range of energy.Therefore,the energy dependence in nucleus-nucleus potential simulates the influence of the nuclear structure degrees of freedom of the colliding pairs. 展开更多

A comprehensive experimental design was developed to determine suitable conditions(volume, percentage of solvent, extraction temperature) for the ethanol extraction of phenolic compounds from ten tropical woody plants. Wenge, angelim vermelho, zebrano, merbau,tigerwood, angelim pedra, jatoba, angelim amargoso,massaranduba, and doussie woods were used in experiments. The effects of three independent variables and their interactions on the yields of cinnamic and benzoic acid derivates were analyzed using UHPLC-PDA. The most significant parameters were found to be solvent percentage,extraction volume, and extraction temperature. Optimal conditions for the extraction of phenolic compound contents were an 80℃ extraction temperature, a 30 mL extraction volume, and the use of pure water as the extraction solvent. The tested species of woods contained mainly cinnamic acid derivates. Water extracts after hydrolysis contained greater amounts of cinnamic acid derivates than those extracts from non-hydrolyzed material.The total phenolics content was highest in water extracts of tigerwood, wenge and merbau;however, the extract of merbau wood was a stronger radical scavenger in ABTS?áassays: 34.11 ± 0.02 mM Trolox equivalents per g of dry extract. The main compounds possessing antioxidant activity in the extracts of vermelho wood assessed by UHPLC analysis were hydroxycinnamic acids. 展开更多

This paper on Umberto Eco's contribution to the narration process, tries to identify the mainstream of modem studies of the text. I have tried to separate it as an entity, which together with other textual techniques and strategies shall create applicable theoretical messages towards an artistic creation. Eco's (1994) work itself, gives an opportunity to exemplify his theoretical claims. Using my examples, I have tried to show how a work of art can be rendered narrative, a subject to contemporary techniques and cooperativeness with the reader. One of the main issues I have explained is the time factor, seen from the linguistic and semiotic prospective. I consider that Eco's treatment of the relation between reality and fiction is of a semiotic nature. One of the main elements it contains (and definitely makes such a difference possible), is the time factor. The delay (lingering) part treats works of art separately, and gives one of the ways to render artistic works readable, worth having an aesthetic value, in their way to transmitting a message to the audience. 展开更多

Due to the availability and particular features, wood was one of the first materials used by mankind with a wide variety of applications. It can be used as raw-material for paper and cellulose manufacturing; in industries such as chemical, naval, furniture, sports goods, toys, and musical instruments; in building construction and in the distribution of electric energy. Wood has been widely researched; therefore, wood researchers know that several aspects such as temperature, latitude, longitude, altitude, sunlight, soil, and rainfall index interfere as to the growth of trees. This behavior explains why the average of physical chemical properties is important in wood study.Most of the researchers consider density to be the most important wood property because of its straight relationship with the physical and mechanical properties in wood. There are three types of wood density: basic, apparent and green. The apparent density was used here at 12% of moisture content. In this study, four different types of wood were used: "Freijo", "Jequitiba", "Muiracatiara" and "Ipe". For wood density determination by non-conventional method, ^241Am, ^133Ba and ^137Cs gamma-ray sources, a NaI scintillation detector and a counter were used. The results demonstrated that this technique is quick and accurate. Considering the nuclear parameters obtained as half-value layers and linear absorption coefficients,^ 137Cs demonstrated to be the best option to be used for inspection of the physical integrity of electric wooden poles and live trees for future works. 展开更多
