Supercontinuum generation using long-period-grating waveguides on silicon

Research on supercontinuum sources on silicon has made significant progress in the past few decades.However,conventional approaches to broaden the spectral bandwidth often rely on complex and critical dispersion engineering by optimizing the core thickness or introducing the cladding with special materials and structures.We propose and demonstrate supercontinuum generation using long-periodgrating(LPG)waveguides on silicon with a C-band pump.The LPG waveguide is introduced for quasi-phase matching,and the generated supercontinuum spectrum is improved greatly with grating-induced dispersive waves.In addition,the demonstrated LPG waveguide shows a low propagation loss comparable with regular silicon photonic waveguides without gratings.In experiments,when using a 1550-nm 75-fs pulse pump with a pulse energy of 200 pJ,the supercontinuum spectrum generated with the present LPG waveguide shows an ultrabroad extent from 1150 to 2300 nm,which is much wider by 200 nm than that achieved by dispersionengineered uniform silicon photonic waveguides on the same chip.This provides a promising option for on-chip broadband light source for silicon photonic systems. 展开更多

This study investigates the fabrication process of Zn-diffused ridge waveguides in periodically poled magnesium-doped lithium niobate(PPMgO:LN).A controlled variable method is used to study the effects of diffusion temperature,diffusion time,ZnO film thickness,and barrier layer thickness on the surface domain depolarization and waveguide quality of PPMgO:LN.A special barrier layer is proposed that can automatically lift off from the sample surface,which increases the depth of Zn doping and reduces the surface loss of the waveguide.By optimizing the process parameters,we fabricate Zn-diffused PPMgO:LN ridge waveguides with a length of 22.80 mm and a period of 18.0μm.The above waveguides can make a second harmonic generation(SHG)at 775 nm with an output power of 90.20 mW by a pump power of 741 mW at 1550 nm.The corresponding conversion efficiency is 3.160%/W·cm2,and the waveguide loss is approximately 0.81 dB/cm.These results demonstrate that high-efficiency devices can be obtained through the fabrication process described in this paper. 展开更多

A phoxonic crystal waveguide with the glide symmetry is designed,in which both electromagnetic and elastic waves can propagate along the glide plane at the same time.Due to the glide symmetry,the bands of the phoxonic crystal super-cell degenerate in pairs at the boundary of the Brillouin zone.This is the so-called band-sticking effect and it causes the appearance of gapless guided-modes.By adjusting the magnitude of the glide dislocation the edge bandgaps,the bandgap of the guided-modes at the boundary of the Brillouin zone,can be further adjusted.The photonic and phononic guided-modes can then possess only one mode for a certain frequency with relatively low group velocities,achieving single-mode guided-bands with relatively flat dispersion relationship.In addition,there exists acousto-optic interaction in the cavity constructed by the glide plane.The proposed waveguide has potential applications in the design of novel optomechanical devices. 展开更多

Photonic hyper-parallel quantum gates play a critical role in high-capacity quantum communication and fast quantum computing.Here,based on photon scattering in onedimensional(1D)waveguides,we present some heralded schemes for constructing four-qubit hyper-controlled-not(hyper-CNOT)gates in two-photon systems.The qubits are encoded on both the polarization and spatial-mode degrees of freedoms(DOFs)of the photons,which can simplify the quantum circuit and reduce the quantum resource consumption.In our schemes,the faulty scattering events between photons and emitters caused by system imperfections can be filtered out and discarded.That is,our protocols for hyper-CNOT gates work in a heralded way.Our calculations show that,with great progress in the emitter-waveguide systems,our photonic hyper-CNOT gates may be experimentally feasible. 展开更多

This article addresses the past,present,and future status of hybrid plasmonic waveguides(HPWs).It presents a comprehensive review of HPW-based photonic integrated circuits(PICs),covering both passive and active devices,as well as potential application of on-chip HPWbased devices.HPW-based integrated circuits(HPWICs)are compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology,and their matched refractive indices enables the adaptation of existing fabrication processes for silicon-on-insulator designs.HPWs combine plasmonic and photonic waveguide components to provide strong confinement with longer propagation length L_(p)of HP modes with nominal losses.These HPWs are able to make a trade-off between low loss and longer L_(p),which is not possible with independent plasmonic and photonic waveguide components owing to their inability to simultaneously achieve low propagation loss with rapid and effective all-optical functionality.With HPWs,it is possible to overcome challenges such as high Ohmic losses and enhance the functional performance of PICs through the use of multiple discrete components.HPWs have been employed not only to guide transverse magnetic modes but also for optical beam manipulation,wireless optical communication,filtering,computation,sensing of bending,optical signal emission,and splitting.They also have the potential to play a pivotal role in optical communication systems for quantum computing and within data centers.At present,HPW-based PICs are poised to transform wireless chip-to-chip communication,a number of areas of biomedical science,machine learning,and artificial intelligence,as well as enabling the creation of densely integrated circuits and highly compact photonic devices. 展开更多

Three kinds of coplanar waveguides (CPWs) are designed and fabricated on different silicon substrates---common low-resistivity silicon substrate (LRS), LRS with a 3μm-thick silicon oxide interlayer, and high-resistivity silicon (HRS) substrate. The results show that the microwave loss of a CPW on LRS is too high to be used, but it can be greatly reduced by adding a thick interlayer of silicon oxide between the CPW transmission lines and the LRS.A CPW directly on HRS shows a loss lower than 2dB/cm in the range of 0-26GHz and the process is simple,so HRS is a more suitable CPW substrate. 展开更多

A novel biopolymer, deoxyribonucleic acid-hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DNA-HCTAC), is used as the core layer material in optical waveguide, and the cleanroom technology is successfully applied to fabricate the single-mode channel waveguides with low propagation loss. The prepared DNA-HCTAC material shows high optical quality at the optical telecommunication wavelengths, such as high transparency, relatively high refractive index and low birefringence. In the fabrication approach, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is used as a barrier layer to protect the DNA-HCTAC material from the corrosive of photoresist developer, and the etching conditions are optimized to form the smooth wall and sharp cross-section of the waveguide. Lastly, the optical characteristics of DNA-HCTAC channel waveguides are measured. The results show that the DNA-HCTAC waveguide operates with single-mode propagation and has a low optical loss. 展开更多

A novel nanolaser structure based on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide is proposed and investigated. The coupling between the metal nanowire and the high-index semiconductor nanowire with optical gain leads to a strong field enhancement in the air gap region and low propagation loss, which enables the realization of lasing at the deep subwavelength scale.By optimizing the geometric parameters of the structure, a minimal lasing threshold is achieved while maintaining the capacity of ultra-deep subwavelength mode confinement. Compared with the previous coupled nanowire pair based hybrid plasmonic structure, a lower threshold can be obtained with the same geometric parameters. The proposed nanolaser can be integrated into a miniature chip as a nanoscale light source and has the potential to be widely used in optical communication and optical sensing technology. 展开更多

We report on the fabrication of circular cladding waveguides with cross-section diameters of 60−120μm in Pr:YAG crystal by applying femtosecond laser inscription.The fabricated waveguides present 2D guidance on the cross-section and fairly low propagation losses.Multiple high-order guiding modes are observed in waveguides with different diameters.Corresponding simulation results reveal the origin of a specific kind of guiding modes.Confocal micro-Raman(μ-Raman)experiments demonstrate the modification effects in femtosecond laser affected areas and ascertain the refractive index induced guiding mechanism.In addition,luminescence emission properties of Pr3+ions at waveguide volume are well preserved during the femtosecond laser inscription process,which may result in a potential high-power visible waveguide laser. 展开更多

Finite difference beam propagation method(FD-BPM) is applied to design sapphire rib waveguides. We explore the process of etching on a sapphire substrate surface via direct laser ablation. Rib waveguides that satisfies the dimensions of our design were fabricated. Actual light propagation performance is tested, and with the cut-back method, the insertion loss of 2.9±0.5 dB/cm is measured. 展开更多

Multilayer waveguides containing a silicon oxynitride layer were used as charge trapper in this investigation on the effect of the internal field inside the waveguide. Compared to waveguides without the trapping layer, experimental results showed that the induced linear electro-optic (EO) coefficient increases about 20% after poling, suggesting strongly that the internal field is relatively enhanced, and showed it is a promising means for improving nonlinearity by poling in waveguides. 展开更多

Surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs) are evanescent waves propagating along metal-dielectric interfaces, which provide an effective way to realize optical wave guiding with subwavelength confinement. Metallic nanostructures supporting SPPs,that is, plasmonic waveguides, are considered as required components to construct nanophotonic devices and circuits with a high degree of miniaturization and integration. In this paper, various types of plasmonic waveguides operating in the visible, infrared, and terahertz regions are reviewed, and the status of the research on their fundamentals, fabrications,and applications is provided as well. First, we discuss the mechanisms of SPPs beyond the diffraction limit, and their launching methods. Then, the characteristics of SPPs on various plasmonic waveguides are reviewed, including top-down and bottom-up fabricated types. Considering applications, certain prototypes of plasmonic devices and circuits constructed by plasmonic waveguides for bio/chemo sensing, router, and light modulation are demonstrated. Finally, a summary and future outlook of plasmonic waveguides are given. 展开更多

Numerical Analysis of Multilayer Waveguides Using Effective Refractive Index Method 被引量:1

With the help of the effective refractive index method we have numerically analyzed a multilayer planar waveguide structure and calculated the propagation constants, confinement factors, and transverse electric (TE) modes. A five-layer waveguide model has been provided to analyze the electro-magne tic wave propagation process. The analysis method has been applied to the 980 nm laser with active layer of GaInAs/GaInAsP strained quantum wells, GaInAsP confinement layers and GaInP cap layers. By changing the thickness of confinement layers, we obtained confinement factor as high as 95% with higher TE modes TE1 and TE2. The results are in good agreement with the experiment by A. Al-Muhanna et al. and give the new idea to enhance output power of semiconductor lasers. The analysis method can also be extended to any other slab multilayer waveguide structures, and the results are useful to the fabrication of optic-electronic devices. 展开更多
