With the deterioration of the environment and the unbalanced relationship between man and nature,people are plagued by varieties of social problems and rising spiritual crises.This paper aims to analyze Thoreau’s cha...With the deterioration of the environment and the unbalanced relationship between man and nature,people are plagued by varieties of social problems and rising spiritual crises.This paper aims to analyze Thoreau’s characters in Walden and attempts to provide the implications for our contemporary life.Combined with Thoreau’s life experience and the background of Walden,the paper starts with the analysis of Thoreau’s characters from three aspects concerning his pursuit of inner serenity,search for true essence of life and abiding passion for life,which constitute his unique and independent characters and provide the enlightenment for contemporary life.We concluded that unique thoughts,attitudes,and spirit embedded in Thoreau’s characters are inextricably connected with our contemporary life.His personal experience and practice of solitary life at Walden Pond is a testimony to the necessity of closing to nature actively and confronting life passionately.展开更多

This paper intends to study the similarities of Zhuangzi's and Thoreau's outlooks on life by analyzing Thoreau's origin with Taoism and the absorption from Taoism in Walden. By making a large amount of analysis and comparison of the texts in these two works, the paper comes to such a conclusion: both Thoreau and Zhuangzi advocate to simplify people's material life and to seek voluntary poverty; they are willing to enjoy the solitude and pursue the spiritual independence and freedom; they prefer to return to nature, live harmoniously with nature and therefore reach the realm of"unity of heaven and humanity". It is generally acknowledged that his masterpiece Walden is one of the most outstanding literary works, in which the richness of thoughts contributes greatly to the spread of Thoreau's philosophy. Thanks to it, Thoreau's philosophy has attracted more and more attention. It is pleasantly surprised for a Chinese reader to find Confucianism in an American classical work of the 19th century. Many scholars have studied Confucianism in Walden in order to analyze how Confucianism influences Thoreau. However, these studies more or less overstate or understate the influence of Confucianism.
