And the learning of language and the teaching of meaning have been a long-lasting and significant topic in applied linguistics. In this paper several aspects of language teaching including main features of language learning, different ways for teaching of meaning etc. have been discussed. Then, the visual element in language teaching and different kinds of visual materials such as sound film, audio-visual courses, television will be introduced with an application of visual materials in real language class. Then, after the above discussion, the final conclusion will be arrived that the ultimate goal of language teaching is meaning and visual element can be of great importance in the creation of a real situation in language teaching.展开更多

In this study...This study was conducted to find out the available visual diversity in Japanese residential streetscapes. The visual diversity occurs when the visual elements on streetscapes are different to each other. In this study, a field survey as a subjective method and the entropy as an objective method were used as measures of visual diversity. Data were collected from 80 residential streetscapes from four sites in the Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The sequential perspective views of streetscapes were analyzed for eight visual elements： shape of houses, shape of roofs, shape of windows, positions of the main openings of houses, availability of the ornaments on houses, height, color and the appearance of the boundary walls of premises to calculate the entropy. A field survey with multicultural subjects was used to find out the correlation between entropy and the human perception on the visual diversity. According to the results, the residential streetscapes displayed high diversity variations largely due to the shape of the roofs, shape of the windows and the appearance of the boundary walls of the premises. Moreover, the results concluded that the residential streetscapes at the study area are neither visually diverse nor visually uniform in considering the visual diversity aspect.展开更多

A fluor...We propose a convenient way of evaluating the mixing performance of static mixers used for round pipe by conducting flow visualization experiments under the turbulent region and using water as the main stream. A fluorescent pigment, glycerin, two carboxymethyl cellulose solutions, and rapeseed oil were each injected upstream of the mixer. Three static mixer conditions were tested: 1) no static mixer;2) a Kenics-type static mixer;and 3) a multi-stacked elements (MSE) static mixer. The mixing trend downstream of the mixer in each condition and with each injection fluid was monitored using a laser and high-speed video camera system to obtain cross-sectional images. We propose suitable indexes based on the images obtained for quantitative evaluations of the mixing characteristics of static mixers.展开更多
